Forgive me for not fully understanding what it involves to crack a bootloader...but didn't the Droid 2 and the Droid X both have locked bootloaders/efuses...and they both have custom ROMs and kernals out right?
What makes the Atrix so different?

There is a thread in the development section that covers this.
As I have read in the forums thus far, my understanding is that a locked bootload only needs the right key to unlock it and then we can have kernels. Either way we can have custom roms. There is in fact a "rom" available, but I think the dev left for the time being. It's just a matter of time before we get more devs, or an unlock key. Hell with an unlock key I'll put out my own roms/themes, but until them I am not messing with this phone.

The rom that we have right now is just a deodexed version of the stock rom with a reboot feature added to it. The dev that created it hasnt left, hes still working hard on getting stuff out. I believe hes on his 3rd bricked phone if I counted the ones hes mentioned thus far correctly.
As far as the bootloader... they are all somewhat different between different phones, it just takes time to figure out the loopholes and to figure out keys.

DG has indeed moved on from the atrix. He will be sticking around a little bit longer it seems. Check the adeo thread for proof =/

He's moving on. He said he has a few more surprises for us though. Just wish we had more devs willing to work on the Atrix. There are so many that come here just to tell us not to bother and it's impossible.
Give it time im sure there will be more devs trying too crack this and the device has ony been out for like 2weeks.
It has so much potential too be forgotten like with the docks and so which i have the laptop dock and its really neat and imagine all kind of stuff it can do when this finally gets cracked.
Didn't the droids had a locked boot loader? from what i read it did and when i go in there forums there's roms for it.
It definitely sucks to see DG go... can't say I've had past experiences with his work but it seems like most who have, really enjoyed it. I really hope development for this platform doesn't fall flat. I know it's too early to determine that, but I'd like to see a lot get opened up.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the bootloader unlocked for this device... as fluid as usb host works on it, I think it's going to be a great dev device... I just wish I reach in and load a custom kernel.

Nothing new.
Not until we unlock the bootloader...
Probably nothing especially since the bionic has come out. DX2 has always been the Red Headed Step Child.

That's not true. CM7 for the DX1 works with a locked bootloader and 2nd-init. DX1 CM7 also only works right now with a Froyo kernel. It should not be impossible now that we have 2nd-init with GB.
Did anyone ask who was actually working on it? I remember the name "dragonzkiller" thrown around but nothing seemed to have come from it. If he isn't, did anyone actually start up the project again? I hate this idea of asking "what the status?" without asking "who is working on it?" and "can we help out?"

The 'locked bootloader' response is pretty standard on this, and it's getting annoying.
Original X= locked bootloader = CM7
However (I may be wrong) didn't they get CM7 to work by using a dev X? Figured out some way to use 2nd-init after playing with a fully unlocked X? I remember reading something like that...

That being said, you will wind up with a CM7 that has no custom kernel. Nothing wrong with that, but it's kinda half assed if you ask me. Basically like installing a theme + apps and debloating. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

That wouldn't make any sense. If you are unlocked, you wouldn't need 2nd-init since you have complete access to the first init. Also, they had to pull a number of modifications to get the Froyo kernel to work on the CM7 GB base. If you are unlocked, you shouldn't need to do all that work. You would've just flashed the latest and greatest kernel.

True. But my feeling right now is that we have no idea at the phone's base performance with all of the Moto blur running on top of it. I'd like to see at least one pure AOSP ROM to see where we are at.
Plus more flashing options are good and CM7 is not a bad option.

My message came out wrong.
I always ask the same thing, "Why can they figure out CM on an X but not an X2?" - and someone told me they learned from an unlocked developer device what it would take to make it run on a standard locked X. Basically the ones engineers get.
This was the answer I got in a forum, so I guess I should take it with a grain of salt, but that's what I read.

Not to offend you because I don't really even know you, but I think this highlights a problem in our community.
I think our community has an awful mentality. There are too many people who say they want something without really knowing what to do to get it, let alone have the initiative to get it. I think the biggest problem in the community is our lack of devs. Most of them don't even own this phone. Yet we somehow expect good ROMs to appear overnight and when we don't get them, we blame Moto and VZW for all our problems. Really? Say we get a bootloader unlock at the end of this year. Do we really expect devs to come to our phone in droves with all the LTE goodness in everyone's road map? Really? If we want CM7 on our phone, how about we work on a 2nd-init version today so if we get unlocked, it takes a few weeks for a kernel-enhanced CM7 instead of a few months.
I want us to change our mentality to doers instead of winers. So much time is wasted on flaming Moto and VZW and wining about our phone instead of something constructive. Take the initiative people. You want a ROM that does X, Y, Z? How about you learn how to make that ROM. Don't know how to make a ROM? Ask Nitro. Ask navenedrob. Go and ask someone who knows to help. If someone else has a ROM with the same idea, pair up and become a team. You want a kernel to overclock? Learn about kexec and how to get that to work. Learn about our bootloader and possible ways to crack it. There are so many ways to contribute to this community yet soo many people love to post in the "state of our crappy phone" thread. Seriously. Take the initiative people.
Now that I got that out. Is anyone still working on a DX2 CM7? If not what, do we need to do to get that started up again if someone wants it?

Agree. I would try helping with development if I knew how. I'd have to go learn Java now and who knows how long that will take. I was only saying that we needed an unlocked bootloader because you know that people are going to complain that we have CM7 (theoretically) but no custom kernel. You know how many headaches that would cause just from reading a bunch of threads full of complaints...

I really have no idea how hard it is to get around a locked boot loader, so what is the likely hood of seeing custom ROMs on this thing?
Thanks,

ask a submarine captain how deep his boat can go.
answer is, no one really knows, which is why they're still working on it.
Dozens of people have asked this question repeatedly in these forums, also
Watch the bootloader threads for more info. The bootloader is starting to be questionable if it really is locked.
Adam has brought up some good points and should be getting an NT soon. Once he has one in hand we should see some hopeful updates.
I'm crossing my fingers and hoping we don't have to do a unbrickable mod to this gem.
Personally, i'm happy with what we got now as long as we can block B&N's OTA.
For the lazy - this is the thread I suggest reading:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378886
AdamOutler will be working with the hardware directly to see if he can essentially do an unbrickable mod allowing the devs to bypass the bootloader and/or extract information from it. Seems the most promising approach to date. It's a good read if you are in to that kind of thing.
Hi all, just a quick intro. I am new to the Verizon/ Droid scene. I am picking up the Droid Razr today. I am coming from Sprint with an Evo. I have to say I am nervous about losing sense, but I am excited for how fast the Razr is going to seem. I know that even overclocked, my phone would not be able to hang with the speed of the new phone.
I have read a bit, but just wanted to get a round about for rooting (easiet way), which ROM's seem to be the most popular, kernel options? I noticed as of right now there is no ICS, but are there solid builds being played with right now?
I am sure there is plenty I am missing, but just wanted to say hi.
I appologize about the questions, but very little free time to do a lot of reading thus far.
Thanks in advance
Welcome to XDA.
First off, the RAZR has a locked bootloader. You can't flash kernels, only ROMS. There's a fairly large movement out there to get Moto/VZW to unlock our bootloaders but no results yet.
As for rooting, there are plenty of resources out there for 1-click rooting. So rooting isn't an issue, just make sure you get the right root program for your version.
As for ROMS, DroidTheory has some pretty nice ROMS and most are very stable.
Most of this information is in the forum, you just have to search for it.
Hope this helps!

That site has been extremely useful for me. I don't know if I am allowed to link so I made that odd thing there.
To demonstrate how useful it is I managed to get stuck on boot, search up a method for unbricking, enact the method, have the most terrified bathroom break of the new year and go back to stock all in under 24 minutes.
Absolutely none of that was an exaggeration.
So it took a bit. But at this time tomorrow I will finally be a Droid owner.

Hi guys im planning to buy this phone, but does it has an unlocked bootloader? How good is developer support for this cellphone?
the bootloader is locked and with that you cannot load a fully working custom kernel thus there are not many dev involved.
Hope something improves in future...

I recommend you the razr. Its a good phone overall especially the build quality.
No match with the play unless you are a heavy gamer.
I think you will find a positive answer for either device within its own forum.
So grain of salt aside, I like the Razr, but from a slightly technical person that likes to experiment with things, It was fun to flash a couple ROM's when I first got it and settled on one. After finding Eclipse thats what I've stuck to permanently. Its fast, its compact, and most importantly everything just works out of the box. So really, no more fun experimenting...
If you want to take your chances on some ICS leak that you may never be able to flash from in the future, or an ICS build over the old kernal with things not working or some things kinda working. I dunno... "fun"?
With no unlocked BL its seems that the development for this phone is somewhat castrated. Don't get me wrong, out of the many phones I tried, this one was the nicest as far as speed, screen, and touch/feel. Phone-wise anyway its the better. Development... not so much. We are all in here keeping our fingers crossed for one of two things... 1) Kholk gets his BL bypass working to where someone actually wants to develop for it but outlook not-so-good on that one, or 2) Motorola actually keeps their word for once and eventually gives us a BL unlock. (again "outlook not-so-good")
I just wish there were more fun things to do with our Razr like there are for other phones, Xperia Play included since you can unlock the BL with that, and just glancing in the development section of their forum can attest to that.
All that aside, as a Razr owner, I can recommend it as a very nice, advanced featured, smartphone that does everything I could ever dream of. heh
Of course we can use custom kernels. Just a short time remaining until the new kernel source will be released, then kexec will work with both cores and fully working custom roms will become available.

I rooted my Verizon S4, froze all of the bloatware with ROM Toolbox Pro, and now it's fast as hell. The battery lasts 2 days with moderate use, FoxFi hotspot works, and I don't get any security warnings (froze your ass KNOX). I've installed SafeStrap 3.71, and I've tried installing HypderDrive, but it hasn't been able to stick. The bootloader is totally locked down, so Hashcode's SafeStrap seems to be the only thing keeping any hope alive for something that will work.
I guess the real frustrating thing is that there is no real unity between developers here, and that no one can decide on a route to go with. This leaves a lot of us who just got the S4 with fewer, or no ROM options. Is it time we accepted that a bootloader solution might not be the way to go, and attack it using something like SafeStrap? I've been using SafeStrap on my Droid 4 for a long time, and it is the best alternative, and in many ways, superior to unlocking a bootloader. Sure you get issues regarding space for more than one ROM install, but having your stock ROM intact is an excellent fail safe. There are some other constrictions, but the manpower potential could really bring results to a dual-boot system like SafeStrap.
My deal here is, let's get behind HashCode on this, and maybe he can share his work with the rest of the developer community, and we can all contribute some funds to make something like SafeStrap work, which it most definitely can. Imagine if we could get Cyanogenmod developers working on SafeStrap with HashCode to come up with ROMs that would actually work like they do with an unlocked bootloader. There is a somewhat steep learning curve with SafeStrap, but with resources comes better documentation. People are too quick to jump on a 1-click rooting method, and leave the rest of us behind. If SafeStrap got enough attention, maybe it could someday be a one-click solution that no one at Samsung, Motorola, or HTC could ever lock down.
Let me know what you think.

I Love Hashcode and that he designed SafeStrap as i have used it on my Droid Bionic prior to getting the S4 (im still on MDK). But I would never say it's superior to unlocking a bootloader in any sense. I can say maybe convenient for quicker swapping of roms but I can't see SS being better then an unlocked Bootloader.
But the rest of you post im totally on board with. Id rather an unlocked Bootloader and be able to get OTA's with the correct kernels then a port where some things won't work since were still on the original or a previous kernel.

Let me know what you think.

what makes you think there is no unity or communication between devs on this issue? The fact of the matter is, the security lockdown is pretty steep and in the end, no work around can be possible.

That's my point about the bootloader, that in time, every carrier is going to put their phones on lockdown. It just makes sense to move to a newer concept than trying to unlock the bootloader. Is hijacking the boot order, what SafeStrap does, the right way to go? What about overwriting the kernel and bypassing the bootloader altogether? I remember Hashcode was working with kexec, and for those of you who were there a couple of years ago when SafeStrap was first there for the Motorla RZR, D4, and Bionic, might remember this. It executes a live kernel overwrite, before the bootloader can even come up to verify the signed stock rom/firmware/bootloader.
I've read a couple of people mentioning this, but I'm not sure if its feasible. My point, SafeStrap and KEXEC are two options that need some blockbuster support. Hashcode is the Zeus of Mt. SafeStrape, but where is the God of War and the rest of the bunch to kick ass? Can we pick a direction?
Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way, maybe my message isn't the one that needs to be heard? I haven't posted much over the last couple of years, but I've done a lot of reading over the last few weeks, and I'm just curious if there is a Bat Signal they can use to summon the Justice League and put their collective boots up the ass of Lex Luthor (Verizon and co.)?

Put it this way:
I'm with you 100%... WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO?
Because right now, your basically saying "DEVELOP MORE STUFF FOR ME SO I DON'T HAVE TO, LOLZ".
You just saying we should do things better is not a plan, what are you actually doing here to move this thing forwards?

Its not just like "BOOM! Here is Kexec!"
Its not like the people you are suggesting should put together a software package for you phone for free are not working on it... Its just hard.

Dude. There are people working on this, believe me. And people who arent developers or cant contribute directly have posted a bounty to reward whoever can get a workaround. Safestrap does work, regardless of whether you are able to get it to work on your device. I'm guessing its user error. Not really sure what more you expect the community or Hashcode or any other dev to do that they arent already doing...
