Custom ROMs? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I really have no idea how hard it is to get around a locked boot loader, so what is the likely hood of seeing custom ROMs on this thing?
Thanks,

ask a submarine captain how deep his boat can go.
answer is, no one really knows, which is why they're still working on it.

Dozens of people have asked this question repeatedly in these forums, also

Watch the bootloader threads for more info. The bootloader is starting to be questionable if it really is locked.
Adam has brought up some good points and should be getting an NT soon. Once he has one in hand we should see some hopeful updates.
I'm crossing my fingers and hoping we don't have to do a unbrickable mod to this gem.

Personally, i'm happy with what we got now as long as we can block B&N's OTA.

For the lazy - this is the thread I suggest reading:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378886
AdamOutler will be working with the hardware directly to see if he can essentially do an unbrickable mod allowing the devs to bypass the bootloader and/or extract information from it. Seems the most promising approach to date. It's a good read if you are in to that kind of thing.

What makes the Atrix bootloader special?

Forgive me for not fully understanding what it involves to crack a bootloader...but didn't the Droid 2 and the Droid X both have locked bootloaders/efuses...and they both have custom ROMs and kernals out right?
What makes the Atrix so different?

There is a thread in the development section that covers this.
As I have read in the forums thus far, my understanding is that a locked bootload only needs the right key to unlock it and then we can have kernels. Either way we can have custom roms. There is in fact a "rom" available, but I think the dev left for the time being. It's just a matter of time before we get more devs, or an unlock key. Hell with an unlock key I'll put out my own roms/themes, but until them I am not messing with this phone.

The rom that we have right now is just a deodexed version of the stock rom with a reboot feature added to it. The dev that created it hasnt left, hes still working hard on getting stuff out. I believe hes on his 3rd bricked phone if I counted the ones hes mentioned thus far correctly.
As far as the bootloader... they are all somewhat different between different phones, it just takes time to figure out the loopholes and to figure out keys.

DG has indeed moved on from the atrix. He will be sticking around a little bit longer it seems. Check the adeo thread for proof =/

He's moving on. He said he has a few more surprises for us though. Just wish we had more devs willing to work on the Atrix. There are so many that come here just to tell us not to bother and it's impossible.
Give it time im sure there will be more devs trying too crack this and the device has ony been out for like 2weeks.
It has so much potential too be forgotten like with the docks and so which i have the laptop dock and its really neat and imagine all kind of stuff it can do when this finally gets cracked.
Didn't the droids had a locked boot loader? from what i read it did and when i go in there forums there's roms for it.
It definitely sucks to see DG go... can't say I've had past experiences with his work but it seems like most who have, really enjoyed it. I really hope development for this platform doesn't fall flat. I know it's too early to determine that, but I'd like to see a lot get opened up.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the bootloader unlocked for this device... as fluid as usb host works on it, I think it's going to be a great dev device... I just wish I reach in and load a custom kernel.

Will The Rezound ever get S-OFF?

Now that an unlocked bootloader is an option, do you think the Rezound will ever get S-OFF?
For most, it seems that foregoing a warranty and unlocking the bootloader through htcdev doesn't present any issues. But many of us simply don't want to get exposed to that risk.
Question came up in this thread:

well as to whether or you will be able to ever root your phone with htc dev unlock....probably not
it didnt seem like there was a huge effort made to s-off the rezound prior to unlock (aside from evil fake dev null's bs)
now that there is a way to flash roms, i doubt anyone is bothering
hopefully this is not the future of htc devices on vzw going forward, as personally ive used og inc and inc2 fully s-off and would probably think twice is my next htc phone was dev unlock only
but this should be in general anyway, not development
Obviously, ROM's are available.
Obviously, you can flash them with an unlocked bootloader.
If you don't unlock the bootloader, you are saying there is a Root method available that will allow you to flash a ROM?

Because that has been the case for every phone I've owned. Did you even take the time to read the original post? Maybe my English wasn't plain enough? Unlocking the bootloader simply isn't an option for some people.

Then don't do it. It's that simple.
This isn't every phone you've ever owned. This is the culmination of every HTC phone released for the last few years. They've learned how to plug nearly all, or enough, of the possible exploits to unlock the bootloader while offering a way to unlock it that doesn't require devs beating their heads against a wall, perhaps fruitlessly for months. The devs aren't going to bother, because why would they? HTC's given us a perfectly reasonable way, and credit to them.
The fact is, we simply don't know what will happen to phones returned under warranty. Plenty of people have returned unlocked phones with no problems.
Thank you for your contribution. This is information I would like to have had before buying this phone. Obviously, it is a gamble to unlock. They make it very clear that it voids your warranty. If there are reports of people getting warranty service in spite of the phone being unlocked, then that is pure luck.
Some of us prefer not to rely on luck.
Never imagined I'd see this type of animosity for a simple question. Especially one as important as this, in relation to this phone.
It appears to me that there's not a large quantity of devs supporting this phone. Hopefully more get the Rezound. I came from the AT&T Captivate and there were tons of devs cooking up ROMS for that one. I had always heard that HTC phones had great dev support on XDA so I didnt really do my homework before buying the phone, it was more of an impulse buy once I saw the large beautiful screen.
All I've done so far is unlock and root my phone. Still running stock and so far I like it a lot. Havent really felt the need to drop a different rom on my phone, or even flash a different kernel. One reason I guess is, the phone works really well as-is, and seems like each kernel or other rom seems to have a good many noted issues.
I hope this improves over time. I loved flashing different roms on my Galaxy S and they were extremely high quality with basically no issues at all. Matter of fact I had been running ICS since back in december and using it as my "daily driver" and it worked extremely well. I believe the only issue was it wouldnt do video recording.

I've unlocked my bootloader, just for the sake of doing it. It was simple. What extra benefits would S-OFF give?

Help me out here. I've searched about this topic. I referenced the one other thread where the question was asked. There was very little discussion.
S-Off makes it easier to flash kernels and ROMs. You can flash them together with s-off.
This may be a dumb question, but can a Mod please close/move this thread? It's extremely pointless and definitely in the wrong section.
EDIT: and to the OP, THIS is what tekhna is talking about.

I'd hoped this would improve, over time, as well. I don't get that impression, judging by the reaction in this thread.
What is ROM? is that an internal component of the phone? Like memory? Is there soldering involved to load a ROM?

If the thread is in the wrong section - I can see the need to move it. But closing it would prevent would-be buyers from obtaining valuable information that could be critical to their purchase decision. No reason to hide the truth that the Rezound will probably never get S-OFF.

I think the reaction your getting is because this has been hashed and rehashed alot and putting topics in Development is a big no no . HTC has said they will still honor the warranty related to hardware as long as customizing isn't the cause of the failure..ie overclocking and burning up processor etc.. Verizon is the one that voids the warranty which is understandable after reading the threads of people that do stuff without reading prior to messing with the phone.

Prime is back I'm so behind - catch me up

Got it back 2 months later from rma status. I barely remember what this thing looks like. Wow can't even believe I have it after so long. So I'm on 21 it seems. Is this the latest?? If so, is 21 rootable? I'm at the point that I don't care anymore. I'll probably have less problems just doing a rom for gods sake.
.21 isn't rootable. either unlock it with the asus tool or roll back to .15.

If you root and/or unlock...be sure to try jermaine151 AOKP. He left XDA so you won't find it here.
It's arguably the best custom ROM for our Primes....and the last few updates are super stable. Also, if you have ANY problem he will work with you as long as you need. He also has a Cornerstone build of AOKP too. (Check your PMs)
There's also a custom build prop that you can swap into your /system folder for better performance and battery life....YMMV. It's under Dev section.
Good luck and have fun....our Primes are STILL the top dog Android tabs. Next closest thing is the Transformer Pad 300, but that's just our lil brother
Any more questions just ask. I've done it all so far on the Prime and I'd be glad to help.
Thanks guys. Yah I thought I saw that link and I read through it. Step 2 I'm assuming would be me, but seems risky for bricking. Almost seems better to just unlock and call it a day and then hope that nothing else hardware related takes a dump.
Runnin the C3 model, so things are better at least.

Developers Unite?! SafeStrap and the Galaxy S4

I rooted my Verizon S4, froze all of the bloatware with ROM Toolbox Pro, and now it's fast as hell. The battery lasts 2 days with moderate use, FoxFi hotspot works, and I don't get any security warnings (froze your ass KNOX). I've installed SafeStrap 3.71, and I've tried installing HypderDrive, but it hasn't been able to stick. The bootloader is totally locked down, so Hashcode's SafeStrap seems to be the only thing keeping any hope alive for something that will work.
I guess the real frustrating thing is that there is no real unity between developers here, and that no one can decide on a route to go with. This leaves a lot of us who just got the S4 with fewer, or no ROM options. Is it time we accepted that a bootloader solution might not be the way to go, and attack it using something like SafeStrap? I've been using SafeStrap on my Droid 4 for a long time, and it is the best alternative, and in many ways, superior to unlocking a bootloader. Sure you get issues regarding space for more than one ROM install, but having your stock ROM intact is an excellent fail safe. There are some other constrictions, but the manpower potential could really bring results to a dual-boot system like SafeStrap.
My deal here is, let's get behind HashCode on this, and maybe he can share his work with the rest of the developer community, and we can all contribute some funds to make something like SafeStrap work, which it most definitely can. Imagine if we could get Cyanogenmod developers working on SafeStrap with HashCode to come up with ROMs that would actually work like they do with an unlocked bootloader. There is a somewhat steep learning curve with SafeStrap, but with resources comes better documentation. People are too quick to jump on a 1-click rooting method, and leave the rest of us behind. If SafeStrap got enough attention, maybe it could someday be a one-click solution that no one at Samsung, Motorola, or HTC could ever lock down.
Let me know what you think.

I Love Hashcode and that he designed SafeStrap as i have used it on my Droid Bionic prior to getting the S4 (im still on MDK). But I would never say it's superior to unlocking a bootloader in any sense. I can say maybe convenient for quicker swapping of roms but I can't see SS being better then an unlocked Bootloader.
But the rest of you post im totally on board with. Id rather an unlocked Bootloader and be able to get OTA's with the correct kernels then a port where some things won't work since were still on the original or a previous kernel.

That's my point about the bootloader, that in time, every carrier is going to put their phones on lockdown. It just makes sense to move to a newer concept than trying to unlock the bootloader. Is hijacking the boot order, what SafeStrap does, the right way to go? What about overwriting the kernel and bypassing the bootloader altogether? I remember Hashcode was working with kexec, and for those of you who were there a couple of years ago when SafeStrap was first there for the Motorla RZR, D4, and Bionic, might remember this. It executes a live kernel overwrite, before the bootloader can even come up to verify the signed stock rom/firmware/bootloader.
I've read a couple of people mentioning this, but I'm not sure if its feasible. My point, SafeStrap and KEXEC are two options that need some blockbuster support. Hashcode is the Zeus of Mt. SafeStrape, but where is the God of War and the rest of the bunch to kick ass? Can we pick a direction?
Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way, maybe my message isn't the one that needs to be heard? I haven't posted much over the last couple of years, but I've done a lot of reading over the last few weeks, and I'm just curious if there is a Bat Signal they can use to summon the Justice League and put their collective boots up the ass of Lex Luthor (Verizon and co.)?

Dude. There are people working on this, believe me. And people who arent developers or cant contribute directly have posted a bounty to reward whoever can get a workaround. Safestrap does work, regardless of whether you are able to get it to work on your device. I'm guessing its user error. Not really sure what more you expect the community or Hashcode or any other dev to do that they arent already doing...

Hey, I am about to upgrade and I will likely hold out for the new Motorola phone, but if it is a disappointment then the G3 is a very interesting option.
Curious what to look for as far as custom ROMs are concerned. I am addicted to running custom ROMs however I have had a Nexus phone lately so the whole unlocking/rooting/hackability has never been an issue. I see the the G3 has root, but I presume something else must be done before a custom recovery can be installed...thus no custom ROMs.
I love the G3s hardware, but I will never love OEM software. I want stock Android and I am hoping that will be possible with the Moto X+1 and/or the G3.
Thanks guys and gals
I'm pretty sure once someone can find an exploit to unlock the boot loader, we'll see a custom recovery as well as a few roms shortly after. I don't think there will be stock android until CM adds G3 support
I have faith in the devs that they'll eventually unlock this phone. It's been said in a few places that the security isn't as tough as say in the S4 for example.
That said though... This phones stock experience really isn't bad IMO. Best stock I've ever had. Being rooted and with xposed it's quite tolerable.
I'm a crack flasher though so believe me the itch is there!

Agree totally
If you want a flagship phone that will definitely run custom roms, I believe the htc one m8 is it for now. I agree with the other posters that the G3 will likely get a bootloader unlock at some point, but there are no guarantees. That said, the stock rom has a similar look and feel to the cm 11 rom I was running on my galaxy s3. While not AOSP, it doesn't annoy me the way touchwiz did and I won't have buyer's remorse if the bootloader stays locked.

haha ok i will throw in my desk drawer then and hope it gets unlocked!!!
This thread is pointless! Asking will there ever be custom ROMs? Of course there will be. But what you and many others fail to remember is that these phones are harder and harder to crack each time. Only reason the M8 had root and S-Off so quickly is jcase had a 3yr old vuln that wasnt patched yet. They patched it and then he had to spend more time and money cracking it again and he made a new version, which he charged for since it was such a PITA. Look how long it took the S5 to get it. Just be happy we have root.
If you are so worried about not having an unlocked bootloader, you should get rid of Verizon and get AT&T or Tmo that supports devices that are unlocked right from the manufacture. They will always have Nexus devices and other cool ones Verizon will never see since they dont allow none Verizon devices on their network.

I don't believe it is a "pointless" thread or question. GS5 doesn't have an unlocked bootloader and who knows if they ever will. They have an exploit to run essentially stripped down versions of the stock ROM but that is it. I have not intentions on switching carriers I was simply asking what the status of the G3 was as far as unlocking was concerned.
Thank you to everyone else that responded, I think the G3 is still a viable option for me. I am going to wait to see what Motorola puts out there, but if I don't like it I'll pull the trigger on the G3.
I think it is pointless because you're asking people to predict the future. Nobody can answer the question. Therefore, the question is pointless.
This thread has outlived it's usefulness.
The progress of this device's development can be followed by reading the threads in it's forum.
When progress is made it will be reported in either the general or development sections.
