Prime is back I'm so behind - catch me up - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Got it back 2 months later from rma status. I barely remember what this thing looks like. Wow can't even believe I have it after so long. So I'm on 21 it seems. Is this the latest?? If so, is 21 rootable? I'm at the point that I don't care anymore. I'll probably have less problems just doing a rom for gods sake.

.21 isn't rootable. either unlock it with the asus tool or roll back to .15.
welcome back, i know the feeling.

Thanks....ive been looking for a downgrade guide to 15, no luck. Dev section maybe?

i think the rollback thread is in the OG transformer threads
rollback= downgrade....

If you root and/or unlock...be sure to try jermaine151 AOKP. He left XDA so you won't find it here.
It's arguably the best custom ROM for our Primes....and the last few updates are super stable. Also, if you have ANY problem he will work with you as long as you need. He also has a Cornerstone build of AOKP too. (Check your PMs)
There's also a custom build prop that you can swap into your /system folder for better performance and battery life....YMMV. It's under Dev section.
Good luck and have fun....our Primes are STILL the top dog Android tabs. Next closest thing is the Transformer Pad 300, but that's just our lil brother
Any more questions just ask. I've done it all so far on the Prime and I'd be glad to help.

Thanks guys. Yah I thought I saw that link and I read through it. Step 2 I'm assuming would be me, but seems risky for bricking. Almost seems better to just unlock and call it a day and then hope that nothing else hardware related takes a dump.
Runnin the C3 model, so things are better at least.

So is it possible to downgrade, root, install recovery and flash a rom without unlocking?

Nope, you need to be unlocked to install a custom recovery and rom

Well I unlocked, and followed a particular guide here. Thanks to whomever wrote it, it worked great. Now running Virtuous. It was a breeze!

Thank you very much! Just got it running, so far no issues or force closes. I have been waiting on a 1.1 bl honeycomb. Thank you!
Wow! Great news, definitely gonna give this a try, had lots of issues the last time I used a 1.2 based bootloader,so I'm really glad to see this!
Thanks!

I'm actually surprised that it took this long.
We used the 1.2 bl initially because we had to as we ported directly from the Adam devs. But once there were Clem kernel ports, it wasn't technically a requirement anymore. I just never changed my port as my opinions on 1.2 are already well-stated and sticking with it made sense to me, at least. But that doesn't mean that a 1.1 based HC ROM was impossible.
However, if NI releases a HC port and it's using a .36 kernel to make everything work, this 1.1 ROM might have issues with porting that. But this is all speculation, at this point - I don't know if a NI port will even work on a GTAB yet, regardless of the bootloader used.
does this has the same bl 1.2 version issues or just the usb to pc?!
bl 1.2 version has these issues:
(copied from other forum)
- Camera isn't working (pulled out the app for now)
- Browser is working, but OpenGL is disabled for it to work. That means no Flash on the stock browser.
- (High-def) video playback does not work, yet.
any testers can confirm this? i'm a bit feeling lazy to try it today
confirmed but very smooth i love it its not reading my sdcard though how can i get it to read sd card?

Awwwww, yeah! I'm pumped. Is this essentially the same as Roebeet's BOS, with the same features not working yet?
This is great news!
Is it accelerated?
Does it run Flash 10.3?

One other thing, on a good note -- I'm definitely happy to see more modders our there for the GTablet. Options are always a good thing and I plan to pull back a bit, starting new month. So the more HC ports we have, the better!
Quick question... If I'm running Vegan 5.1.1, what do I need to do to install this ROM? Full wipe? Just flash it from CWM? Something else entirely?
Sorry, I'm still a bit of a noob at all of this, but I promise I'm trying to learn!
roebeet said:
I was really hesitant to post anything, as I really don't want you taking this the wrong way. I apologize if it came off as anything else but a concern for post-support, that was not my intent (and, in retrospect, a PM would have been better. My bad).
The branding, for me, is mostly about post-support. Remember, I'm a sysadmin by trade so when I get PM's on issues, I usually ask the usual questions like what mod, what version, how did you install it, etc. That's actually why I started branding "TNT Lite" as such back in November, as it was easier for me to know if a user was actually using my ROM or not. That's really my only concern, here. When two different mods are branded the same, it will get confusing. Especially if they are on two different development branches. It is fun, I agree - that's why I do this. But for users who soft-brick, it's sometimes a major panic attack and a lot of them are hesitant to use nvflash.

Robeet, I think you were spot on, the OP is not reading it correctly. I can just see the flood of posts/PM's asking you questions and users cross posting between 1.1/1.2 because of this and the difficulty of tracking all this. it's difficult enough keeping up with all these great roms and boot loader types, I could not imagine what it is like on your guys side.
OP he is not dissing you, he is just asking that you rename it so you can support issues and he does not have to keep getting cross questions, it's pretty much non-issue in my eyes.
OP, thanks for supporting the Gtab and the 1.1. people like all you devs that make android so much fun and android FTW over IOS.

Yes, full wipe and flash it. do a backup of course just incase you want to go back. back up your apps as well so you can restore them on the other side of HC.

I'm aware that RazorClaw is suppose to work on the device but could anyone confirm that it there are no bugs which would possibly brick the device etc?
PS. This is my first tablet / android device so please bare with me.

I think you will be fine rooting that way. There is a site that reviewed th tfp and they used that root method and they said it went well with no issues.
What the hurry ?
It might not be a bad idea to wait until the unit is burned in, and you are satisfied that everything is working perfectly before mucking around (i.e. rooting). Then, if you have problems, you can more certain that the problems are attributable to the rooting.
Enjoy your Prime
Could anyone brief me with the cons of rooting the device? :|
Research first, especially with this being your first android tab. Don't be over anxious n go bricking your device..lol.
Was there an immediate notification for an update after you opened it? Razor claw supposedly doesn't work after Asus pushed a system update. It was rooted prior to update on in-store demo model.
What's reason for eagerness to root so quickly? There are no custom roms or anything out yet. It's not 3G so no tethering. If you root and uninstall system files/bloatware you won't be able to do OTA update to Icer Cream Sandwich. Which means you will have to wait till someone here makes a version, which might not for a while.
Sorry that this is off topic, but does the color you ordered seem true to the advertised pics?

Good thing we have search engines....
1. Technically voids warranty and may not allow OTA updates.
2. Possibility of a brick if you don't know WTF you're doing.
Huummmm... cons of rooting..... hummm... don't rush, still thinking.... possible OTA update issue, very unlikely, but still possible I guess; most of the time the OTA will just erase the root.... uummmm yeah, that's about all I can think of.
Also, guess there's a very small chance of a soft brick... but I would tend to think that the root will either take, or it wont... but there's still a chance I guess.
IMO, the benefits far outweigh the "possible" consequences.
Wish I had mine, I do it in a heart beat.

ATM, other than de-bloating there is very little reason for root.
Does anyone know by any chance the official release date of ICS?
I'm aware that it has been "released" to certain phones like the Samsung Galaxy, but when would it be made available to the Asus Transformer Prime? o_o

Yeah, no other reason... except de-odexing, themeing, TI Backup, freezing, editing database files, changing VM Heap size, installing custom scripts, overclocking/undervolting custom kernels, disabling startup processes.... that's just off the top of my head.

No Official date yet but could be by end of this month or mid Jan. It literally could be anyday. Just keep a lookout on an update notification popping up. Or even go to settings and about. Then click on system or whatever to see of it searches and finds an update for your device.

Everybody says root root. The new roms come out fast... I did it with my original tf and roms don't come out that fast especially if Asus is going to push ICS soon. I'd wait a while especially since a lot of potential devs won't get their unit for several weeks or months!

Help a Prime noob

Hey all ... Not new to the rooted Android scene( have the Epic 4G Touch ) but just picked up my Transformer Prime today ... Man what a great device, especially with the dock.
So naturally after installing all my apps, I went straight to XDA to figure out how to root it Hopefully this is where I can get a little help. After doing some post reading it seems things are a bit different with the Prime Vs. my E4GT phone. I guess my questions below are what I'm left with:
1.) What exactly is the difference between "Unlocked" and rooted( I know what rooted is, but not unlocked.
2.) I found the thread below on how to root, but it says it doesn't work with 9.4.2.21 which is on the tablet now. What is the best way( Read safest way, I don't mind doing extra work for safety ) to get root / busybox installed? I found a stock .21 rooted / busybox ROM on the first page of the dev thread, would flashing this be the best way? How do I unlock to get ready to flash it?
I guess those are my only questions for now, unless someone wants to drop some tips that I may need to know. Really looking forward to getting this device all setup, thanks
unlocked means it unlocks the bootloader so you can flash custom roms/kernels/etc..Be warned though, unlocking your prime sends your serial number to Asus and your warranty will be voided. no way around it.
now for root on the latest .21, there is currently no regular method THST I know of here. Asus closed up the exploit on last update. The only way to get rooted ATM is to unlock your prime and flash a rooted rom or root packages. there's more details on that in the prime developement section. take a look in there. I'm not sure if someone has been working on a root exploit for latest update. you can check the various root. method threads in developement to see if any progress has been made.

Ok ... So I need to unlock it, and then ROMs say I need CWM, I guess I can install CWM without root? Then flash a rooted ROM... I'll look into that, but just want to make sure.
Also, I see that people are unlocking with "Asus Tool" is this an official Asus utility or something I'll find in the Dev forum? Saw that about the warranty also, thanks for letting me know, but I can't resist the temptation to unlock / root, so I'll go with it. Pre .21 did rooting require unlocking? Or was unlocking optional?
reply
yes it is an official Asus tool. It is under the utilities on the download page for the transformer prime software on the Asus global website. I would put a link but their global site is a bit buggy for me at the moment and isn't responding. yes Unlocking was optional prior to .21. However I wouldn't unlock it just yet. If I were you (I'm in the same situation) I would wait for someone to find an exploit. And yes you can install CWM without root. You have to unlock your prime then hook it up to your computer.

Ok ... thanks, resisting the urge to root it is difficult, lol ... maybe I can just hold out a day or two and see if one comes out. How are the custom ROMs for this device? I know for the E4GT their really nice, speed up the device add functionality( CM9 ) are the ROMs for the Prime mature, or still a work in progress? Do most people here flash a custom ROM, or just root it? Learning more by the minute, haven't left the forums since I got home with the Prime, lol
You may want to look into a 3rd party warranty such as squaretrade. You can search and read about it here in the forum. I purchased one to provide a semblance of a back up warranty before I unlocked. Now running Virtuous Prime 9.4.2.21 v1 and couldn't be happier with the performance. Also looks like ASUS is currently validating an new rom update so something newer may be out any day. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip, I'll def. check out SquareTrade, would be good to have a backup. Yea, was looking at VirtuousPrime as well as some of the others. So reading the instructions, I only need Root and CWM to install the ROM no unlocking needed correct( If an exploit is found for .21 to root without unlock ) and then once I install the ROM it'll come with root obviously so I wouldn't void my warranty. Is this assumption correct?
From what I understand, you will need to unlock to install CWM. I'm sure others will correct me if I'm wrong here.

Thanks for verifying that for me jdeoxys. I'm really glad I unlocked/rooted when I was on .15. Since the OP is on .21, he will have to work a bit harder, but I still think its worth it if you don't mind giving up ASUS warranty. But then again, I haven't had one bit of problem with my tfp.
Thanks for the info all... I'm now officially unlocked, rooted and Roming with the Virtuous Prime ROM. Very happy so far, everything seems to be running fine. Stuck with a "stockish" custom ROM for now until I get used to the device, then I'll try CM9 or AOKP after some research.
Now, off to find a good Launcher( Apex or Nova maybe ) and other goodies
Nova launch ftw
I bought Nova Prime, and like it. But the release cycle on Apex is much faster, and seems to be ahead of Nova right now, using Apex currently on the tablet and my phone, liking that a lot.
BTW, what is "Corner Stone" AOKP it looks like it allows you to tile apps? Right now I'm using the basic AOKP, can you get that functionality without cornerstone, or is that what Corner Stone is specifically for?

cornerstone version is more of a true multitasking rom. its not just tiles, per se. the best way to see what it looks like in action is to look at the video he has in that thread. same person who ported AOKP to prime made that cornerstone version also. or even better, just flash the build and see how you like it. if you don't like, you can always flash back to something else
I've yet to unlock my prime but all these cool roms like AOKP, WSG, Virtuous, & Primalicious are very tempting. I always check out their threads though for once I do unlock, ill be up to speed. Leary of voiding my warranty just yet. I'LL eventually unlock but im in no rush. The roms will mature and be better once I cross that bridge.
Didn't you just recently unlock & flash? how are you liking it? which ones have you tried out so far? Usually to get a good feel for a rom you have to run it for at least a few days or a week or so. Team Eos nightlies looks interesting also. AOKP seems to be the most feature packed one though.

Or flash these Rom's in TWRP

Until we get Root for ZV8/ZV6 these are your only options. Well, there's always one more. Give up Root, Unlock and run it like LG/Sprint wants. But you wouldn't be here if that were the case.

If u look at user's stats near their avatar, almost always the ones who are asking how to do this and that and how to "unscrew" up their phones are members that have less than 50 posts. I think they hear about XDA and come here thinking that everything posted is guaranteed or side effect free. These phones are like our bodies... you mess with one thing and it affects something else. I've been around since 08 and seen more and more rookies flashing firmware to their shiny new 600 dollar phones with no regret until after they screw it up. No disrespect to the newbies, but for goodness sake read up and read up and read up until u fully understand what u are doing. Us older members are here to help but we can't fix ignorance.
I gotta say, most of the time I agree that it's just common sense to not take an OTA if you are already rooted. At the same time, I was surprised by how much I didn't know when I started veering out of my "home base" forums.
I had an HTC Evo 4G and then a 4G LTE for 4 years combined, right up until this summer when I got the G3. At the same time, I got my wife off of her iPhone (came from a Hero) and into an S4. It took me a while to get up to speed with the G3, but at least that was a new community. I STILL don't know very much about the S4 - what ROMs are good/stable/updated regularly, what the different root/unlock procedures are, which methods do or don't mess with Knox (or even what that heck that is). I'm slowly learning, but I just don't spend as much time over there. I just wanted to get my wife's phone rooted so I could clear the bloat and get a few root apps running for her.
If you don't spend a lot of time learning the ropes, it can be hard coming in knowing a little bit about what you want (root or whatever) and then finding out that your OTA isn't rooted yet, or that there's trouble brewing between developers which is hampering development in some way, or whatever the case may be. Add to that the fact that there are really different "customs" in different phone forums, and the terminology is phone-specific at times, and new members are bound to get lost somewhere along the way.
I don't know what my point is, other than that I've never seen a community get stronger through flaming and ignoring new users' requests for help. At the very least, I'm a fan of polite replies, even if it's just to say "you're posting in the wrong forum - try the Q&A section / look for Sticky XYZ" or what have you. @engine95 is on the right track by putting up these sort of informational posts BEFORE problems arise. They'll still happen, but this can stem the tide.

If I root and flash the rooted ZV6, will I have to reinstall all my apps? I used to use some sort of backup app but it was still tedious...

No worries. The kernel and a lot of the apks are different in ZV6, so I would highly recommend starting from scratch.
If you restore anything from backup from ZV4, you'll probably end up with issues.
LG/Sprint has really done some very strange things with this update. They say to optimize, but I think it's more so we can't modify it as easily.

I recommend doing a clean flash (wiping). It's a lot of work putting back all your apps and such, but it's worth it to have NO GLITCHES and everything working right.

No worries. The kernel and a lot of the apks are different in ZV6, so I would highly recommend starting from scratch.
If you restore anything from backup from ZV4, you'll probably end up with issues.
LG/Sprint has really done some very strange things with this update. They say to optimize, but I think it's more so we can't modify it as easily.

thanks for the replies. Is updating to ZV6 a good idea or should I wait for Lollipop? Hate to redo all my apps for ZV6 and then have to do it again a month later.

kind of a stupid question I guess but I've been out of the loop for a couple years...
If I root and flash the rooted ZV6, will I have to reinstall all my apps? I used to use some sort of backup app but it was still tedious...

If you're asking me, I say it's worth it. Everything works (to my knowledge) on this ROM. The new ROMS coming out (including lollipop 5.0) now for our LS990 have lots of glitches that need to be ironed out still. This ROM is the latest and has everything working and is awesome as a daily driver. It's going to be a while as the developers and testers get all the kinks out of the 5.0 ROM that is out now. Just my simple opinion. Also I love XPOSED and right now xposed only works on KITKAT and not LOLLIPOP (so far).

thanks, I'll get to work on it sometime this weekend.
Yeah I read for a good week or two before stump, another week before bump, after a nandroid xposed and all it's glory, no issues I've been doing this for the last four years and still read and follow instructions very carefully and ask questions, I just read a thread where a recognized contributor needed help with a soft brick, I'm running his theme, I can't afford to afford another phone, I still consider my self a noob 7 smartphones in plus I don't have a computer right now. Question is there any stable 5.0 builds
I think it depends on how you define stable.
Stable as in not crashing all the time? Yes, I think so.
Stable as in all features working? I think not.

Me, too. Or at least until the AOSP-based ROMs get past the alpha & beta stages.
Dammit I wish I had read this

Terminal command in twrp no computer required if stuck in twrp loop just did it and was able to boot back up

Prepare. Seems everyone has let that zv6 update sitting on their device get the best of them. Lol. Time to help. Thanks e95 I'll send them here. A few. Lol

Thank you for this guide, restoring my device to re-obtain root wasn't difficult just very tedious! My fault though, I for some reason thought the OTA was a radio update. I worked 70 hours this last week so I wasn't thinking clearly lol.
Added an option to fix taking OTA.

[Q] Picked up another Prime

Wow, I can't believe how long it's been since I've posted in this forum. I haven't kept up with my TF201 updates at all, now I'm overwhelmed by what is available.
On my current/old TF201 I have been running Hairybean v1.51 and have been loving the Prime ever since. Well I found a used Prime recently at a great cost and decided to pick it up. It is stock non-rooted C30K. I figured I would just jump into the Hairybean thread and download what I need, root and rom this biznatch and call it good. Then I saw all the new roms and forgot what I was doing. I'm like a virgin on my first trip to Bangkok with a fresh paycheck and no duty for a week. I don't know what to do or where to start, hence this thread.
Here is what I want to do or what I primarily do on my prime now:
surf the net
read books--do a lot of outside reading during the summer and the Super IPS is a must
stream movies from my NAS drive while at home
Been messing around with GPS lately, not sure if I'll use it in my boat or not.
That's really it. I mostly want it fast enough to stream my movies without buffering or stuttering a lot and keep the Super IPS.
Now the question is what ROM still has the Super IPS brightness that I need. I assume almost all of the roms have been tweaked enough for my steaming needs. Should I just load this one with HairyBean v1.51 since I know I like it, or should I delve into something newer.
Your thoughts a guidance are appreciated~

There are lots of newer roms about that I haven't even tried but you definitely don't want Hairybean 1.51, that is a very old version.
If you are going to try Hairybean you want the 2.31 version. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2407248
Once that is setup using the instructions in the thread you should be good to try most of the other new roms also as most of them are on the TF300 bootloader the same as Hairybean.
Try and find out what bootloader you are on now and make nvflash backups so that you can always get out of a brick if something goes wrong.

thanks for the info. I guess I should have made my question, "Which version of Hairybean should I install?" v1.51 has been great and stable for me. I look forward to trying to figure out how to root and rom this thing again!
I'm on my way, but I have spent most of the day trying to figure out how to root now.
I have unlocked sucessfully, but that is as far as I can get. I have tried a few different root methods like sparky root and a few others.
Can someone point me in the right direction as to what I need to do and where I can find the info to get though my next step to make it to the newest version of HairyBean?
I appreciate your help.
Android Version 4.1.1
Build number - JRO0C3.US_epad-10.4.2.18-20121122
thanks for any help!
Uh...nervermind. Sometimes taking a break can help clear things up. I'm good. Unlocked and rooted. Next step is TWRP and HairyBean

Why did you care to root, if you flash a custom ROM anyway?

I don't have a great answer for this. I am not intimately familiar with flashing custom ROM's on this thing, I just dabble when needed. Also, I started way with the Viewsonic G-Tab in which I was pretty good at flashing, it's where I cut my teeth with flashing ROM's, so some habits may just die slowly I guess.
Anyway, I unlocked this new Prime I got and couldn't get CWM on it for some reason and I couldn't find much in the way of process or steps to take to get from bone stock to ROM. After searching around, reading multiple threads here and watching youtube vids, I went the route that I went. Unlock, root, install TWRP, ROM. The only thing I skipped was setting up NVFlash, though I may do that later. Then again, if this ROM is anything like v1.51 that I ran for years on my first (now hand-me-down to my daughter) prime, I may never have the need to upgrade this thing again.
I am up to learning though, did I take the wrong steps? Was there an easier way? It would be nice if someone "In the know" would post up a step-by-step how-to from bone stock to ROM flashing. Then again, it may already be there, buried in the forum somewhere.
