So, as I said, I LOVE this phone and think it rocks! I've been having all sorts of fun with it and the ROMS that are available.
However, I wanted to ask if anyone had any views or personal knowledge of the Google Nexus One?
Now that I have been truly spoiled by Android and this community, I started keeping an eye on ebay, CL, the usual places for any stellar deals. I'm seeing some Nexus One phones at reasonable prices but am unsure if I would be doing the right thing moving to an older model than the Aria.
It does appear to have a better screen and faster processor but I tohught I'd tap the community for your views.
Please, I'm not looking for any haters, flamers or getting into a pissing match about why the Aria is better that phone x,y, & z. I'm purely asking from a users perspective whether it's worth me having to invest (because I'll lose money on the Aria) to "upgrade" to a Nexus One?
Also bear in mind I'm NOT looking for any phones tied in with a contract, hence why I am somewhat limited in my scope.
Many thanks everyone.
Personally I'm favoring the inspire, but it might be awhile before it gets down to a reasonable price (and a while before someone figures out how to root the new hboot).

You need to go visit the HTC Inspire forum. The Inspire can be rooted despite the HBOOT loader that was shipped on the phone. IMO $399 non-commit for a phone like the Inspire is pretty reasonable, too.
Nice! I will go check it out. Thanks!

Thanks for the pointers guys. I'd still really like to hear more pros / cons directly about the N1 as compared to the Aria.

There are some multitouch problems on the N1. It goes crazy when your cross the axis. Same problem came with the Desire with Amoled screen. I think there is also another problem that makes the grey color look pink-ish

Could you clarify that a bit for me? I'm not even sure what that means - crossing the axis?
To be fair, I don't really use many gestures other than pinch-zoom, does it affect that?

Even though it is a little older, the N1 will still be faster than the Aria. And the development community is just huge.
I'm thinking about getting the Nexus S. They will be available in Canada soon, on bands that are AT&T compatible.
Anyway, I don't see how anyone on XDA would be disappointed with the N1. There's just so much you can do with it.

No it doesn't affect pinch-to-zoom but there are games or apps where you need to cross your fingers and it is affected by this issue. Here's a video that kind of shows what I'm talking about. Same problem came with the Desire with Amoled screen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsSUqkh8pcI
Ahh, I see. THANKS for the video post, that really clearly illustrates the issue. Is this a problem on the super LCD screen or just the AMOLED and was was it addressed at all via firmware updates?
Bottom line, I'm really on the fence about getting a Nexus One as I am happy with my Aria. The main points in favor for me I think is coming down to Nexus having bigger screen and being able to use the trackball as my notifier - the LED on the Aria SUCKS!!
as from what i seen on the multi-touch test in dev tools our aria suffers the similar problems

Just Amoled, it dissaperead as soon as HTC started releasing the Desire with S-LCD screen. It was a hardware problem, that's what I read, at least. I don't think it was ever fixed. At least I never read anything about it.

Download dev tools from the market or any multi touch test and you'll see what he's talking about. It's because the aria has a capacitive touch screen like the nexus one. Capacitive screens can only register two touch points. And really only good enough to recognize a "pinching" gesture.
I believe most of that info is correct.
Thanks, you know what, I already tried it and it's true! It causes some very weird behaviors....who knew??!!
To be honest it really doens't affect much in terms of real world usage and I'm still pondering the idea of getting a N1 as I'm actually pretty happy with my Aria. We'll see.

Just wondering I love my vibrant and screen but the specs on the doubleshot is awesome. And the main reason I would think of switching is the keyboard
I use swype so expect bad grammar and errors
I got a mytouch for my gf a few months ago. its a very nice phone but I couldn't get past the physical buttons and charger being on the bottom left.
This is the new slide coming out though check it out its going to be completely different
I use swype so expect bad grammar and errors
no.
I would wait for the T-mobile g3 if you needed a keyboard. I don't have any info on it, but espresso is a lame version of sense. But if you really want to type more accurately you should stop using swype. Just a though.
Nope. Physical keyboards are 90's tech.

Hell no. I don't see myself switching to any device that doesn't have equal audio quality (through headphones) to voodoo sound. The screen would also need to be as good or better. Looks like I could be waiting a while.
I'd only jump to SGSII. Other than that it's falling really.

HTC makes great phones, but I don't understand either. In this case, the OP wants a keyboard. I thought I needed a keyboard until I got rid of my G1.The first mytouch slide was a turd of a phone, and I can only imagine that the second one is going to be a lower-level device as well. I wish people knew that the stupid "genius button" is merely only the search button with a different label.

Hi,
is anybody working on porting HTC Sense to SG2 ?
I know there are threads on this issue with Samsung Galaxy S1 and Tab.
The SG2 is a good phone hardware wise (except for it totally over saturated colors on the display, and lack of led notification light), but it is directly user unfriendly software wise. (yes I have tried the NOLED software, but it drains the battery in notime, uninstalled!) - And making my living as a photographer with 3 hardware calibrated LCD screens, I can not recognize my pictures on the screen on the SG2, it may have good black-levels, but hello ??? The colors are WRONG on this phone!
After having used HTC Desire before, so many things are annoying me on
this SG2.
The list is so long with issues that I am considering writing up a bad-review for the
Samsung GS2 just to show how bad it is compared to HTC phones.
Just to mention a few issues:
- the stock keyboard on the SG2 is a joke! (yes I know there are 3rd partys and I am using one)- but the first you notice is you have to do a LOT of extra keystrokes to find and do what you want to do! (comma, special signs etc.)
- the call module, log etc is really really bad, HTC has collected them all in one window, on the SG2 you have to press a LOT to get what you want, and what moron decided to embed the text-messages in the call-log? you cannot remove the either! sick!
- pressing a missed call (once you find it WAY down the list, due to all the text messages above it), you get up another annoying option screen, why cant the damn phone just make the call back?? that's why you are there isn't it?
- the embedded modules/widgets on the HTC is unbeatable, like the brilliant friend widget which includes both a fb and a brilliant flickr broweser. There is not a single desent flickr program/browser on the market that can compare!
- I have tried just about every 3rd party launcher there is available, but they all are bad compared to HTC sense. currently using Launcher Pro Plus, which tries to emulate some of the features of the HTC sense UI, but doing it badly. annoyin message constantly about entering twitter preferences, the point is I dont have and dont need twitter!! AAARGH!!!
I am not a millionaire and I would prefer not having to buy a new phone and loose money on my over-rated SG2. But if porting HTC Sense to the SG2 is unlikely to happen I will take the loss.
For crying out loud, who buyes a smartphone based on reviews that run benchmarking software to test them? We need a phone to work smoothly and be user friendly, not win every possible benchmark!
And while I am writing this, the SG2 beeps telling me the battery is flat, AGAIN !!
I do not mean to ***** and complain, but I really think somebody should start working on the Sense port to Samsung. I hope somebody else sees my points.

My suggestion is go buy a sensation because It doesn't sound like you want to do the work to get what you want. Those who like the sense UI really like it and the SGII might not be the best fit for you.
As to who buys the phone based on reviews .... well you obviously and now you are all panty twisted because its not a HTC phone. One suggests you should have just gone for a HTC to start instead of buying a phone ... waiting out the return period and then coming here to whine.
What to you mean "do the work" ? I am not a programmer, that's why I am "whining" about it and asking if anybody knows if anybody is working on this.
And yes, it is stupid to get carried away when just about every reviewer gives the Samsung Galaxy S2 which has good hardware, full score due to running benchmarking programs. And I admit I was stupid. But I guess you get "carried away" and you are
thinking "all of them can't be wrong" !? - In this case I am tempted to say they actually
are, since the phone is not user friendly at all.
Nevertheless, I am certain the SG2 with Sense 3.0 would be the ultimate thing.
Best,
messus
I have used sense and I do not like it.
HTC fanboys are worse than Apple 's sometimes.
SGS S II is faster than sensation because that phone has sense on it.
It slows it down and if you have 100mb of free RAM you are lucky.
Believe me just flash miui and you are happy

Twoddle. People who develop on xda do it for their own fun and then they share. Developers are not at the beck and call of anyone who wants X to do Y.
Xda is about sharing information and tech - NOT issuing demands.
As for the OP, that was just a little too aggressive to be taken seriously, so I'm not surprised that he got flamed for it, but at least he seems to be getting some positive responses now.
Incidentally, this subject has been discussed many times and a simple search on the OP's part would have led them to other threads where this could have been discussed. Instead, they decided to ignore the forum rules and start a new thread.

YES! I can tell you I have been running MIUI ever since I started this thread!
And, I will NEVER go back to stock rom, or semi-stock modifed rom, THIS (MIUI) is how the Samsung Galaxy S2 should have been from the beginning! And all other android devices without HTC Sense for that matter. MIUI is a fantastic user interface, beautiful, smooth, practical, very well thought-through and USER FRIENDLY !!
Thank you MIUI ! If it was not for you I would have trashed this higly over-rated smartphone from Samsung!
Maybe it's just me, but I'm so underwhelmed by the communit(ies) for the MoPho. Coming from a Pre, I'm used to a passionate and active community of near-fanatical phanboys waxing poetic on the delights/disasters of their phone. But there's so little excitement/action/enthusiasm around the MoPho. I'm really surprised. Personally, I'm happier with this phone than any other tech gadget I've used. Period. The signals are great - Phone, Wifi, GPS. The battery life is by far the best I've seen on a smartphone, there's no lag, the screen is easily seen in sunlight, the speaker is loud. Without root and just adding some widgets and a new launcher, this thing kicks A$$!
So why is it so dead in MoPholand? Where's the developer action? Am I the only one who loves this phone?
Maybe it's just the nature of the fragmented Android universe?
Or are people just ho-hum about the MoPho?
Or is everyone so happy that they're not spending time on forums b1tching about it?
C'mon mophos! Represent!
I don't frequent this board as much as some others as the Photon works so well with just the stock software and the few modifications posted in the DEV section. I am tired of trolling people that are talking about the SGS2 and I've got my theme how I like it (save for a few xml edits that I am too lazy to try and figure out).
There are two things that I would LIKE but I know will be harder for ME to figure out then its worth. Reboot options (have to edit android policy jar) and power control widgets in the pulldown bar (inb4 widget locker)
I totally see what you mean. However, I do remember when I first got my EVO it was a good 3-4 months before any activity started to pick up.
Honestly, I could care less. With my EVO I was looking forward to developments simply because ..... well there were many flaws with that phone.
The photon stock is sufficiently acceptable for me. Great battery, great speed, i really dont care about roms/kernels etc... All i care about is launchers, widgets and aps thats more than enough for me to customize
And with Android 4.0 coming out, anything I do to it now wont matter because I'll be one of the many curious people to upgrade
I say give it a couple of months at least until after the 4.0 comes out.
Two things I'm looking forward to: Android 4.0 and Nexus Prime.

Also, getting an unlocked boatloader with 4G (without having to jump through hoopes to make work) and other custom recoveries might help as well. It will happen...just very early for this device yet. In my opinion is moving along very nicely.

Good to know things are likely to pick up over time. I'm glad to see everyone else generally very happy with the phone. There are some tweaks to do - but that's true of every phone. The MoPho has its issues down to things I'd call minor annoyances. It's got all the major issues covered. And they are totally on top of it with the updates. I think we will start getting big bonuses from the Googlerola combination.
I'll keep talking the phone up to everyone on my own.
This phone is so fantastic that I only need root. If some cool rims are developed with working 4g I will surely go that route, but for now I am fine with the way it is.

I disagree. This phone is very well done stock. But in comparison it has its weakness to other phones and when the sammy comes out more of those will be pointed out. But so will some of the places it shines. Give it time and the dust will settle. As of now there is no clear winner, but going either route you cant lose IMHO.

I would have to agree with everyone as well, has the pho even been out for a month yet?
I am very excited about the prospect of the unlocked bootloader w/4g as that is the only thing stopping me from going buck-nutty on this thing with new Roms. Motos have been hacked for so long im sure its only a matter of time before the flow of devs come back once the SGS2 hype dies down.
as for now all I need is root, since 4g is way too much fun to not have at the moment.

Exactly. I LOVE this phone Out OF The Box. Great/Amazing Battery Life. Stock ROM is fine with me. I finally feel I have NO need to put on another ROM. With Google Buying Moto Mobility, sky's the limit for our Super Phone. I can see it in Broad Daylight. I have the Sprint Hotspot on it (for Xoom, HP Touchpad, 3DS and Netflix) it works just Great with only 3G, 4G is Lighting Fast.
I am a happy customer. My wife liked it so much she gave our daughter her EVO Shift 4G and I got her a Photon. Everyone is Circle Jerking with the SGS2. Let them have it. When Sammy does not deliver (like usual) and we have Ice Cream before everyone else, they will be jealous of us and not the other way around. This is the BEST phone I have EVER had. I'm Rooted for My Backup Pro and Titanium Backup and that's it.

Honestly I couldn't care less what phone someone else has or what they think of mine. If everyone else in the whole world dropped the photon for the SGS2 that is fine with me. I will still love my Photon. If I wanted to have the same phone as everyone else I would have an Icrap phone.

This is the first android phone i didnt have to root to be happy with lol (out if abt 15 difficult devices). Im rooted now but stock rooted just for cache cleaner and titanium backup. Its definitely the best android device ive owned...
The only thing I dislike about the Photon which is really minor anyway is the pentile screen. The gloss effect is annoying.

Peeps keep talking about the problem with the pentile screen, I've never seen it. Do I just have bad eyesight? Everything looks sharp and clear to me.

The display is very sharp but the Pentile effect is very obvious. It's like a dithering effect. Everything has this grainy effect to it. Charge your battery full and look at the battery meter. If you don't see a large green icon full of tiny black specks, you are in denial. You don't see a solid green icon, it's got that dithering effect. And so does everything else on the screen, but the screen is still sharp and vibrant.

I was all for going to buy the amaze 4G. It was between that or the Galaxy S2 but now I see all this talk about screen bleed and ocassional lag. Should I just go for the Galaxy S2?

Personally I don't care for this very blu-ish hue from the AMOLED screen on the SGS2, so I think I'm going to pick up the Amaze 4G myself.
I was going to get the SGS2, all the way... the resolution was too much for me, couldn't deal with it. The camera/camera software on this phone and resolution that works sold me on it. (plus you can't beat the sleek design)
My other worry with the Amaze was the lack of any accessories (cases n such) and the fact that the Sensation probably has most of the would be Amaze devs n such. We'll see what happens, but the phone is great as is so far.

i think some people are TOOOOOO picky, sure theres a little bleed from the LED's, but i can see dev's incorporating a led dimming mod that will make it less noticeable. nothing is ever perfect, but for me, this is as close as an android device has gotten

That's what settled it for me.
The resolution on the SGS2 makes all of the icons and indicators look comically large, it kinda looks like a toy.
For people still trying to decide, go into a T-Mobile store and put one in each hand. The difference in build quality and feel will be overwhelming and obvious. As far as the "bleeding" that some are complaining about, it's really, really not that big of a deal. If it were I would be taking mine back, no upgrade here, I paid full price.
Just go into the store and look at them. The AMOLED screen is really beautiful, but it does have that same bluish tint to it and frankly, is not that much better than the screen on the Amaze. At least not that much better to outweigh, in my opinion, is the lower build quality of the SGS2. It's the same "plastic-y" feel that my Vibrant has, this time, they just put some kind of texture on the plastic back.

I picked it up to play around with it, and I saw TouchWiz and heard that distinctive TW "click", when you're navigating around.
Immediately had flashbacks to the "bad ole" Vibrant days, not falling for it this time.

Hercules is a great phone but like everyone keeps referring to, touchwiz needs a grownup overhaul. Really. To childlike in its presentation, I had both the epic and the att galaxy s2. Great phones but same ole click Clack. Get the Amaze or wait on the Nexus Prime. Can't go wrong. Peace yall.

Ive read that its pretty loud. A considerable upgrade from the sensation (speaker wise).
I just noticed on my Amaze, my capacitive buttons lights don't always stay on, and are usually off.
I just came from the G2x and I hated it. And I'm a pretty forgiving user. But the Amaze is incredible. I even like HTC Sense. No lag, nice feel, I've been getting 4g speeds around 10 to 12 in Minneapolis where with the G2x I was lucky to get 5. This will be my phone until it breaks or something happens with the Merger. Just a great phone.

HTC has been really struggling lately, and now with OnLive costing them $40 million, things are definitely not looking good.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you think we're going to start seeing the effects of all of this loss soon? I'm worried about new devices releasing, as well as updates being given to existing devices, if the company keeps falling like this.

Ouch, definitely doesn't sound good. Not sure if they will be able to stay in it or not...depending on how this whole Apple/Samsung thing turns out, they may be able to use it to their advantage, but it sounds like they've got some pretty big issues to deal with. I think I'm already pretty much resigned to getting whatever Samsung's offering is when I'm eligible for my next upgrade. I had a tough time choosing this time around anyway, so I figure I'll give them a shot (never owned a Samsung)...but it sounds like that may be the "only" option if things don't improve for HTC.

Good, sometimes drastic things need to happen before a company makes drastic changes necessary.
I guess it is what it is. I am happy with the EVO LTE. I'm going with a Nexus next time around since they will hopefully be beyond the stupid pentile screens by then. Maybe we will get lucky and HTC will get a Nexus at some point in the future.
If rim and Nokia are still in business I think htc will be OK for now.. they do need to start making better decisions and listening to their customers ..they are still turning almost a billion dollar profit this quarter ..still pretty good
A company thats making a profit is about to collapse? Really? Please Explain:cyclops:

how can they be making a profit and collapsing at the same time
do you even read and think before you decide to spread such garbage?
They're hurting, but I have high hopes that they come back even stronger. They need to make a few adjustments to the way they work, and it can make all the difference. For one, be as dev friendly as they used to be. Second, less device models as they made it seem like they were going to do. They need to cut as much variants out, and focus on keeping close to the same phone amongst different carriers. That's my opinion.

Haha I love how people read a comment in an article and then talk like it's their comment.
You guys don't think a company can collapse when turning a profit? Really? How about when your profits rapidly decline quarterly, and the government is helping bail you out? Look at the trends, and you'll see why they're collapsing.

I think HTC needs to start making phones out of plastic cause obviously no one cares what they're made off cause no one's buying them.

It's funny because you probably didn't even read the article.
They're making a profit, but they're still a shadow of their former glory. Their market share has plummeted and it isn't showing any signs of improving. Just because they're still pulling in money doesn't mean that everything is sunshine and rainbows for them.
HTC is still a profitable company, but with such relentless competition from Samsung and Apple, their numbers are dropping fast enough that banks are beginning to get very nervous. This could quite literally be the beginning of the end.

This indeed sucks but at this present time all i can ask for is that they release Jelly Bean before they close the doors..My wife sold her iPhone and bought the Galaxy S3 and i've been playing with it here and there and its an awesome phone...I was amazed that a stupid kitty cat live wallpaper runs flawlessly with out slowing down the scrolling on the phone..I think I may have seen the light and sipped on some of the Kool-aid..Im kinda envious
HP just took a multibillion dollar write down because of the EDS acquisition, but this was an excellent strategic investment. HTC is doing the same thing. They might be down, but they're not out.

I don't think that HTC is going to go out of business. I'm hoping that they can come up with something that can stabilize them a bit. In my opinion they need to make like Samsung and give their phones more of an identity.
They need try harder to keep their phones in order instead of releasing 20 different devices. They've taken a step in the right direction with the One series, but the naming is way too confusing for most people to be able to tell what the phone is all about. HTC needs a way to make a budget, mid-end, and high-end phone that isn't different on every carrier and that represents itself well.
With the One series, you have the One X, the One XL, the One S, the One V, and I'm sure that the upcoming/rumored One "XL+" (or whatever we call it) will join that lineup as well. The names just have no way of differentiating themselves without looking into the specs. If you walked up to someone and said, "Do you want the One V or the One S?" They're going to say, "Huh? What do the letters mean?"
But with all of the growth that Samsung has seen, I'm not sure that HTC will ever be able to catch up.
That settles it...I am buying a spare Rezound
