[Q] HTC Sense on Samsung Galaxy S2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
is anybody working on porting HTC Sense to SG2 ?
I know there are threads on this issue with Samsung Galaxy S1 and Tab.
The SG2 is a good phone hardware wise (except for it totally over saturated colors on the display, and lack of led notification light), but it is directly user unfriendly software wise. (yes I have tried the NOLED software, but it drains the battery in notime, uninstalled!) - And making my living as a photographer with 3 hardware calibrated LCD screens, I can not recognize my pictures on the screen on the SG2, it may have good black-levels, but hello ??? The colors are WRONG on this phone!
After having used HTC Desire before, so many things are annoying me on
this SG2.
The list is so long with issues that I am considering writing up a bad-review for the
Samsung GS2 just to show how bad it is compared to HTC phones.
Just to mention a few issues:
- the stock keyboard on the SG2 is a joke! (yes I know there are 3rd partys and I am using one)- but the first you notice is you have to do a LOT of extra keystrokes to find and do what you want to do! (comma, special signs etc.)
- the call module, log etc is really really bad, HTC has collected them all in one window, on the SG2 you have to press a LOT to get what you want, and what moron decided to embed the text-messages in the call-log? you cannot remove the either! sick!
- pressing a missed call (once you find it WAY down the list, due to all the text messages above it), you get up another annoying option screen, why cant the damn phone just make the call back?? that's why you are there isn't it?
- the embedded modules/widgets on the HTC is unbeatable, like the brilliant friend widget which includes both a fb and a brilliant flickr broweser. There is not a single desent flickr program/browser on the market that can compare!
- I have tried just about every 3rd party launcher there is available, but they all are bad compared to HTC sense. currently using Launcher Pro Plus, which tries to emulate some of the features of the HTC sense UI, but doing it badly. annoyin message constantly about entering twitter preferences, the point is I dont have and dont need twitter!! AAARGH!!!
I am not a millionaire and I would prefer not having to buy a new phone and loose money on my over-rated SG2. But if porting HTC Sense to the SG2 is unlikely to happen I will take the loss.
For crying out loud, who buyes a smartphone based on reviews that run benchmarking software to test them? We need a phone to work smoothly and be user friendly, not win every possible benchmark!
And while I am writing this, the SG2 beeps telling me the battery is flat, AGAIN !!
I do not mean to ***** and complain, but I really think somebody should start working on the Sense port to Samsung. I hope somebody else sees my points.

My suggestion is go buy a sensation because It doesn't sound like you want to do the work to get what you want. Those who like the sense UI really like it and the SGII might not be the best fit for you.
As to who buys the phone based on reviews .... well you obviously and now you are all panty twisted because its not a HTC phone. One suggests you should have just gone for a HTC to start instead of buying a phone ... waiting out the return period and then coming here to whine.

What to you mean "do the work" ? I am not a programmer, that's why I am "whining" about it and asking if anybody knows if anybody is working on this.
And yes, it is stupid to get carried away when just about every reviewer gives the Samsung Galaxy S2 which has good hardware, full score due to running benchmarking programs. And I admit I was stupid. But I guess you get "carried away" and you are
thinking "all of them can't be wrong" !? - In this case I am tempted to say they actually
are, since the phone is not user friendly at all.
Nevertheless, I am certain the SG2 with Sense 3.0 would be the ultimate thing.
Best,
messus

I have used sense and I do not like it.
HTC fanboys are worse than Apple 's sometimes.
SGS S II is faster than sensation because that phone has sense on it.
It slows it down and if you have 100mb of free RAM you are lucky.
Believe me just flash miui and you are happy

All of the problems you listed can be rectified by third party software - much of which is free. In fact the sense UI lockscreen was just made available to all in the android hacking section as were several other parts of the OS. But searching is hard ....

Twoddle. People who develop on xda do it for their own fun and then they share. Developers are not at the beck and call of anyone who wants X to do Y.
Xda is about sharing information and tech - NOT issuing demands.
As for the OP, that was just a little too aggressive to be taken seriously, so I'm not surprised that he got flamed for it, but at least he seems to be getting some positive responses now.
Incidentally, this subject has been discussed many times and a simple search on the OP's part would have led them to other threads where this could have been discussed. Instead, they decided to ignore the forum rules and start a new thread.

Xda is not supposed to have this kind of fanboy activity, at least not when i joined.
defending touchwiz/samsung to the point where you tell others to sell their phones just to get sense ui is ridiculous. who are YOU to say sense should not be ported? I believe the developer has the right. why would you try to prevent interest in this rom?

Ever owned a TV, you can easily adjust the screen colours man.
And the only true hot thing about Sense 3.0 is the lockscreen, but you can get almost the exact same lockscreen with agile lock. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nanoha.SenseScreen_charge

Mod edit: The use of offence language on XDA is against forum rules read the rules!!! Any future use will result in infractions and vacation.

YES! I can tell you I have been running MIUI ever since I started this thread!
And, I will NEVER go back to stock rom, or semi-stock modifed rom, THIS (MIUI) is how the Samsung Galaxy S2 should have been from the beginning! And all other android devices without HTC Sense for that matter. MIUI is a fantastic user interface, beautiful, smooth, practical, very well thought-through and USER FRIENDLY !!
Thank you MIUI ! If it was not for you I would have trashed this higly over-rated smartphone from Samsung!

Yeah its kinda the reason we're all here
Mine's always worked without problems.
No phone is completely satisfying, just try SPB Mobile shell with some custom skins, it's nicer then WinMo layout and is easier adjustable widgets etc.
Regarding restarting, I don't know what your problems are, I don't have any atm

Miri and dutty ROMs are stock like. PM me for a link ^^
I was very happy with my stock rom for months.... however after flashing I cannot deny the advantages of a custom rom.....
as for htc releasing a phone that "doesn't work" twice..... that's crazy talk, find me a product that's released completely bug free.....

Ok just as a for instance .....
Since this almost sounds like a "Hate on the HD2" thread, lets put that in perspective, the HD2 is the first of it's breed, never been a phone like it hardware wise ...
BUT Iphone OS4 was released, and I am going to post a sample, not all but enough of the BUGS in it, now these are just software bugs, and just a sample, of Confirmed BUGS ...
Code:
Installation
Installation issues on Windows machines (PCWorld)
Networking
Issues joining WPA2 protected networks (PCWorld)
Messages
Screen scrolls back and forth without user input during SMS/MMS sending
Keyboard covers portion of message body sometimes covering text while typing (especially after attaching an image)
Occasional failure to display navigation header, requires reboot to restore
Mail
Keyboard sometimes covers text while typing
In Gmail accounts, mail is archived and not deleted. No way to change to deletion instead
Sync
- backup fails in iTunes, saying iPhone has refused the request
Appearance
- Setting custom wallpapers can occasionally fail
iTunes
- Occassional failure to detect cellular network to launch store
Camera
-Considerable lag at launch
NOW this is the 4th version of this OS , on the pretty much the same hardware, and it still has bugs, where WinMo has to deal with thousands of diff hardware designs.
So , S??t happens. WinMo is not perfect, HTC is not perfect, Apple is not Perfect, Google is not perfect ...
BUT at least with WinMo you have Choices that you can try and decide what works best for you ...
ha ha! I asked for one that's bug FREE not infested....

Not gonna defend HTC because on stuff like this they suck , but they do make more than one model of phone, on more than one hardware platform , running more than one OS, **** happens ..
The only thing I can tell you , if you do not want to use the fixes in this community, such as patches and custom ROMs, and you are not happy with the HD2, go get you a bug free phone, Iphone, or whatever and be happy...
There are lots of people that would be happy to buy your HD2 from you I am sure ...

iphones may well get regular updates but that's just as much for apples benefit as it is for the benefit of the user.
theyve only just realized that their algorithm used to display signal strength isn't worth ****..... how many years has the iphone been out....
Ok guys Let it go long enough. No one is perfect and that includes HTC and MS.
I am closing this thread and no true answer will ever be determined and this will turn into a flame war.

Galaxy S2 A Victim Of Its Own Popularity?

Is it just me or is the Galaxy S2 a victim of its own popularity in the fact that it has so many moaners? I'm completely satisfied with my White GS2, autobrightness is a bit poor but that's not a big deal to me. I've owned a few Android phones,
HTC Tattoo.
HTC Desire.
ZTE Blade.
Motorola Defy.
HTC HD2 (with Android obviously)
Sony X10i.
This phone has been my best experience with an Android phone so far. I used to be a fan of Sense but i feel Touchwiz is BETTER! I think the main problem is the happy users (The majority!) don't feel the need to speak up about it whereas many unhappy users want to make their voice heard. There are people actually saying they HATE this phone on these forums...if that is the case why are they hanging around? Sell the phone and leave the forums
I guess when a device sells as well as the GS2 you do end up with a lot of users who bought the phone simply because it's the most popular currently and they haven't done their research prior to buying or upgrading.
That, and the age-old problem that people very very rarely make the effort just to say "My [insert item here] is awesome, that is all." They more often use the effort to moan.
I bloody love my SGS2, best phone I've ever had. Makes everything else look like a poor cousin, even to the point that I don't feel the need to root at the moment - I had to root my Desire not long after I had it to love it this much!
I had the (mis?)fortune to get a play around with an IPhone 4S the other day, and the SGS2 feels so far ahead it's not even funny anymore.
I had to root my Desire for one simple reason. More space for apps. A2SD!
Is it just me or is the Galaxy S2 a victim of its own popularity in the fact that it has so many moaners?

totally.
And far too many inexperienced user who dont know how to utilise the phone properly, refuse to read and educate themselves or look for the slightest error and go nuts with it
I think its also wanting to feel part of something (ie this forum/community)....so by posting threads it validates their time on this forum...pretty sad really
I think phones like this should come with a rating of some kind like movies do....
agreed with all the above, the phone is by far and away the best I've owned, had a x10i before which was good, arc and arc s didn't inspire me, Galaxy s2 blown me away to the point I don't really want to root/flash unless there is any real advantage to do it.....as asked in another post, looks like it's worth a flash to the latest stock rom which is what I'll do, at least I know I'll get the updates from sammy direct when released without having to wait for 02
Darkside i love that rating comment but what i love even more is your signature. That comment is pure gold.
kp it is definitely worth flashing an up to date stock rom without a doubt. Carrier updates are a joke for all devices.

Sorry for the OT....
The way I see it there are 3 groups of people
1 - Those who have a faulty handset myself being 1 of them with WiFi issues, poor battery, low volume to name but a few.
2 - Those who don't have a faulty handset
3 - The fanboys who even if it was faulty they would never admit it.
Well those in group 1 need to return and get a replacement or a different phone. Those in group 3 need to wake up.
And let me add,
4. Those who really aren't that bright or lead a very pessimistic life
Is this a "Brit" only forum?
Just kidding, You guys are on target. The phone stock is GREAT and if you have a bug or two, well rooting and a few choice apps can make your phone even more awsum. Just taking the time to say that my Epic touch is GREAT!!!!
---Live long and prosper---
The SGSII is my first smartphone and obviously my first android phone too. I'm loving it and I don't have any issue to moan about (so far).
Great sig Darkside
I love my SGSII, that is all.

Agree - I love this phone and the android community, but there are quite a few whining idiots around.
That said, we're still wayyyyyyyyyy better off than the iPhone 4S crowd. Lots of morons complaining there, and worse, they can't even do anything about it. iOS doesn't allow half the tweaks and hacks Android lets us do, especially if not jailbroken

[Q] Why de-sense?

I have always been a little confused by some people that by and HTC phone. You see it in every HTC phone forum. People by the latest and greatest HTC phone just to get rid of Sense. You know going into buying an HTC phone it has Sense but you don't like it. Why not just wait for the GNEX? I had an ERIS. I understand trying to get every inch of speed out of your phone. This phone doesn't need that. With the Eris I even ran a Sense based ROM because it just seemed to actually be the smoothest thing to run on it. This phone was built for Sense. It just needs to be optimized and tweaked a little. On my ERIS I flashed pretty much every ROM made for that guy. Always went back to Sense. Just felt right. But if I didn't like Sense, I would have never bought this phone. I am just trying to get some feedback from the rest of you guys/girls to get a better understanding of this trend.
Well in my case I got the sensation because it was dual core. Solid screen size and it was out about 6 months before the gs2. I never had much of a problem with sense other than the fact that it's a ram hog. I would imagine people buy HTC products because of the hardware.

So that you have less programs taking resources from other programs.
HTC makes good hardware. Up until they started being strict about locking the bootloader, you get the phone for the hardware, design (prefer theirs over Samsung), you could buy the phone and put other roms on there that are faster. Nexus phones are good only because of the software, but hardware wise its usually a little behind. So if you could put the same software on better hardware, its a better option.
Because HTC has some decent phones, but Sense is an abomination. We want the hardware, but not the ****ty software. It's a pretty simple concept.

Replace sense with a different launcher and watch how much more battery life and snapper the phone runs and you'll understand too.

What do you find an "abomination"/"****ty"? I just find that most people end up running a CM ROM then re-sense it with second had apps or built in features of the launchers they are using.

I have run different launchers. I actually did before I my OP. I personally didn't feel like that phone was super "snappier" or that battery changed much. Battery has been more of a screen/radios issue. I have been averaging 16 hours with normal use on the regular battery.

I could rant for hours about why I hate Sense. It breaks compatibility, removes features, generally looks completely fugly (not so much now a days but on my Evo 4G, it's terribly ugly), performance issues, battery issues, closed nature is against my GNU ways, severely ****s up contacts (embeds notes into your Google Contacts in the cloud, often times doesn't sync properly etc), spams you about some ****ty HTC Sync option every time I plugin to my PC which is 300% useless as I run Linux on my desktop, and the list goes on and on.
CM7 is overall just a huge improvement. I love not being tied to HTC's garbage, being able to build and tweak my own ROMs *from source*, getting updates for newer versions before 99% of phones have them, etc.

That's like buying a new car for the the power train only. There is going to be something comparable to the rezound in no time. If you hate HTC's twist on android why support them by buying there phone? Business see numbers, if they are selling their phones like hot cakes they think you pretty much like the overall phone. They are gonna just keep expanding and refining sense.
HTC isn't suddenly going to stop using Sense because I didn't buy their phones (which, btw, I've already stopped doing, samsung > *), and if we think that sense is total **** (which it is), why shouldn't we remove it? We're not paying for the OS, we're paying for the phone.

I understand the whole being able to fully customize to your liking. That's why I am asking, iF you have such a hate for Sense why would you financially support what they are putting out? I also understand your a dev so you love linux and the more pure android experience. Would you buy and iPhone if you like the specs on it? I hate apple products personally, if their specs on somthing was awesome and I could change their OS to my liking I still would not but and apple product!
Hrmm... Let me see if I can figure this out.

Wondering why people would want to customize the software to their liking.
I smell Troll.
It's not only the internal hardware, but the overall quality of HTC phones is great. Compared to Samsung phones, these are much more solid. Also, until this phone, HTC has been extremely friendly for devs. Nobody expected this phone to be locked down for this long.
And don't even start with apples way overpriced locked down phones.

I think we can see where you are coming from, but it's really not as simple as you are making it out to be. There are really only a few choices out there, so there might not be one that fits exactly what people want as a whole. So we make do with what we can, like buying an htc phone for the hardware and updating the software to our liking.

I totally understand about customizing your phone. I actually asked why do you hate sense. So far I got I F*ing hate it and it's ****ty. Gary did have some valid points. I prefer a Rom based on the Sense framework with the bloat gone. It can be a pleasant experience. It seems more like a troll to me to not read everything and post what you did!

LOL, sorry for bringing apple into it! I totally agree for the most part HTC makes solid phones. Thats the main reason I buy them also. I have sammy tv's but I have had nothing but problems with their phones.

I see that. I just wanted to know why all the hate for sense. If it is so bad, why is their pretty much and app for everything that sense has?
Also I am laid off right now, so I have nothing better to do than start a thread about this. I knew there was going to be a bunch of hate directed blindly towards me for starting this but I honestly want to know why the hatred for sense.

Your question was why buy a phone that had sense on it, knowing it was there, rather than buying another brand and supporting HTC Financially when you didn't like the software.
For me, I didn't really know if I would like Sense or not. Having not run Sense on an Android phone, I was at least interested to try. I had Sense on an old Win-Mo phone, but had not had a chance to try the latest/greatest.
I suspected that I wouldn't like it (and I don't ... I'm not into social media, and I like to tweak my launcher bar, screen size, etc .. things I can't do with Sense), but this particular phone is still the best you can buy at this moment. Best screen, CPU, etc. While the G-Nex has some appeal, I had hoped this phone would give me the best of all worlds (Try Sense, if I don't like it, unlock, go AOSP, etc.).
My 'dig' at you was simply that on this type of site, in this type of environment, we aren't just 'users'. We are tweakers at a minimum, and some even hav dev skills. So the concept of taking ANY phone and not 'ripping it apart' doesn't fit. If it was a Samsung phone, we'd be trying to get rid of Touchwiz, if it was Motorola, we'd want free of MotoBlur.

If you have never had a sense phone I could understand trying it. Thanks for posting what you don't like about it too. I am not against switching ROM's customizing to your liking. I am totally for it. Like you said if we are here we are tweakers at minimum. I was more questioning the people the first day it was out wanting s-off to get ride of sense. Then recently the desense utility came out. It just sparked my interest. Who knows when ICS comes out if I will still want sense myself.

My new E4G LTE first impressions.

I'm on day #2 of playing with this new phone. So far I'm impressed with:
Camera and camcorder (OMG!!)
Sound (get some nice headphones! Without them it won't sound any different than a pos walkman.)
speed (Quadrant standard has it at the top "Your device ************************ " NICE!")
weight (it's so light!!)
Don't like:
Reading that it might not get Jelly Bean (deal breaker)
Compared to an iPhone, speed and utility are better but stylistically an ugly GUI. IOS still feels more solid to me.
need to find a battery pull solution--one of the main reasons that I didn't get an iPhone.
Don't want to have to root this phone to make it better.
I'd say that about covers it. I have 12 days left to see if I'm going to keep this phone or not as I bought through a special that Radio Shack's having. But yeah, the Jelly Bean thing is a real crusher if it's true. I've read many different opinions on this an nothing concrete. Does anyone have more information on this?
Also, does anyone know how to disable the Gmail app? In my other rooted phones I used to delete it and use Maildroid or the native Android email app--much better.
I really want to keep this phone, the camera's just amazing (for a phone). thoughts?
Thanks.

Google made it mandatory for OEMs to support their product for 18 months...the EVO, without a doubt in my mind, will recieve the jellybean update...disable gmail app under apps>all> click gmail and top right button disables it. Or don't sync your google account?
Battery pull is as easy as holding your power button for 10 seconds until it reboots..you're chilling

Yeah the JB thing got me there for a second. Even if HTC decided not to release JB, someone, will release a build for it.

JB isn't a huge leap like gingerbread to ICS was, even if that were true (which I doubt) that shouldn't deter you from getting this phone.
You prefer the iPhone UI? All you do is scroll through pages of apps. We call that the app drawer. Haha, everything else may be new to you, so I'm guessing you may not be taking advantage of the FAR more interesting UI of Android 4.0. Learn more, and you'll love it.

Indeed the camera and camcorder are spiffy ^^
It will get jelly bean.
Honestly, if you like the iphone gui you can probably just install another launcher or rom like MIUI once/if it gets stable.
The battery pull thing isn't that bad, and if you need to replace the battery with a new one, it is possible but it's a really involved process.
Here's where I can't really comfort you. You will most likely have to root this phone in order to stay happy with it. I thought I didn't need to because the speed and everything was so amazing and overwhelming at first, but I did. I'm not sure how much the OTA helped, but for now I believe you will be forced to root in order to compensate for the devices flaws(Wifi/3g stability & multitasking mainly). Rooting can help alleviate some of this pain and make it a strong daily driver though.
Once you root, you won't notice a large performance boost, mainly because on today's phones and our phone specifically it's powerful enough to handle most tasks already. Battery life won't change much either(I get a fairly solid day easily). Although you'll get a lot more stability out of your phone strangely.

lol no official JB on the HTC EVO 4G LTE?? What kind of BS is that? whoever told you that is full of ish.
Yeah… LOL! I thought I'd get flamed for complimenting IOS's GUI.
We're an Apple family (iPhones, iPods, MBPro, Mac Mini) and I'm the only Android user. What I mean by GUI is Apple's approach to simplicity and user fluidity. Those are all things that I liked when I used MIUI on my first EVO. It's not that I like the screens of cloned icons--yeah, that's boring. I just like how smooth everything works on iPhones and iPods--you can't deny it, it's buttery smooth! When designing user interfaces, it's often the little things that matter and Apple really seems to pay attention to that. I don't see the point of widgets, I get what they are but I don't find them useful enough to keep, like MIUI. The PANDORA widget works sometimes and I have to go into the app to remind it to play! LOL.
I'm not bashing Anrdroid or the EVO--I bought another one that I'd really like to keep. But I also appreciate what other manufacturers do. The EVO 4G LTE has fluidity in some ways especially when using Chrome--wow!
I Googled "EVO 4G LTE jelly bean" and found a bunch of posts at other android websites where some users expressed the EVO LTE might now get JB, too many to post.
Ok, thanks all for your replies--and yeah, I'll probably be rooting this phone if I keep it (probably will) just like all the other Androids I've rooted.

I agree that it's crazy talk, but that's why I asked. I trust the opinions of the XDA community as its never let me down in the two years that I've been lurking and posting. I tried to find the one article that I read it on and now I can't find it. But that's ok... I believe the user may have been ranting about HTC+Sprint lagging on OTAs. Regardless, that's why I asked XDA.
LOL, it's looking less likely that I'm returning this device.

[Q] Android Questions for an android virgin

I've been using iphone for a while but am contemplating getting a work phone so thought I'd get something different. My wife has the nokia lumia and I'm not a great fan, although I do like the dynamic windows tiles.
So I had a quick play with the Galaxy S4 and HTC One. Before I went into the store the HTC was the one I was most interested in, but I didn't like it to be honest. I usually like HTC UI but not on this, plus I didn't like the soft touch keys.
The S4 user experience was much better imo, but the thing that let it down over the HTC was the build quality/materials the phone is made from. For a £500+ phone I'd expect better tbh. I do like the Android home screen(s) though, much more interesting than the iphone imo. I'd personally like it if Apple introduced widgets rather than just having a screen full of icons.
Sorry to compare to the iphone, but obviously that's my benchmark. I did find the touchscreen very good and responsive, but neither are as slick as the iphone when scrolling around etc. At times they were a little jerky/stuttery (only minor but there), also I found that it didn't always click the links I wanted, it would click the link above or below. Finally the web pages rendered far too small for me (especially the S4). It's as though they're trying to cram to much real estate on making the text too small and ilegible. I had to zoom 99% of web pages, whereas with the iphone I can read them without zoomin
So my questions are can these things be altered? When I had my HTC HD2 a few years ago I found similar issues with rendering and area it was clicking, but you could tweak all these things, as well has how quick the screen scrolled etc by tweaking the registry (xda-developers was a great help for this). Can you do a similar thing with android?
Sorry if this sounds like I'm bashing the phones, I'm not they're very good phones. But for me personally I'd need to be able to change the rendering size of webpages at least (if not the other things) as I'd just find it too annoying to use.
You can alter the text sizes on Android browsers, under Settings > Accessibility. See screenshot.
Personally if I had to choose between the One and the S4, I'd take the One without even thinking about it.

Thanks for the reply and help. What are your reasons behind you comments of the One vs S4? It's a shame you can't rent phones fro a few days so you can get to 'play' with them properly, as we all know spending a few minutes in store doesn't give you a real fell for them
Like you mentioned earlier, the build quality is better on the HTC. Samsung phones are just too plasticy for my liking, they look ugly and feel cheap. The design of the One is beautiful.
I also much prefer the stock Sense 5 UI over Touchwiz, I'm using Sense 5 on my One XL at the moment. I'm usually an AOSP fan (I've never really liked Sense much) but Sense 5 has won me over. Touchwiz looks so ugly to me, especially the comic-sans kind of fonts they use so often! If I was getting one I'd root it anyway so I guess the UI would be interchangeable.
Lastly, I think Samsung try too hard, yeah they have some cool features sometimes but ultimately I think they're really gimmicky. In fairness the same could be said about the Beats "audio enhancement" found on HTC phones, no thanks I prefer a music player with good built in equalizer (like Poweramp).

Thanks again. I need to swot up on the different UI's as I'm not familiar with all the different Android UI's/OS's eg touchwiz
After researching and playing with these devices again in store I think I'll choose the HTC One. One think that I don't like is the black background when you go to the apps page, or in menus. The blue wallpaper of the Samsung Galaxy looks much more aesthetically appealing to me (see below). I know with android you can customise just about anything, so can you change the app and menu backgrounds on the HTC to anything you want rather than just having plain black? How easy is it to do?
Not a big thing I know, but aesthetics is important to me
HTC One
Galaxy S4
On the stock ROM I don't believe you can change the app drawer background. But, if you decide to root the device there will most likely be ROMs available that will have that as an option, plus many more.
In terms of how easy rooting is to accomplish, I believe if you can read and have a basic understanding of technology then it's pretty straight forward. It's daunting at first, I researched quite a lot before attempting it, which is always the best way to go about it.
You're in the right place. XDA is a brilliant community, with a wealth of information, and it's full of like minded people who are willing to lend a hand. If you do decide to root your phone, just go to the XDA home page, use the drop down boxes at the top to find your device forum, and start learning about the true capabilities of Android.

Most things on android can be changed which is what what makes it so great.
Thanks for the replies guys. When you say root the device is this essentially hacking the device, such as jailbreaking the iphone? If so does it cause any performance issues/glitches, and does it effect warranty in any way?
As for the forum, it is truly staggering the knowledge base on here. I used the site many moons ago when I had the HTC HD2 and the info was invaluable.

Yeah rooting is like jail-breaking, essentially it's hacking your phone in order to give it access to the root directory of your device (where the cool stuff is), hence the term rooting.
There is usually a warning that it will indeed void your warranty. In terms of glitches, newer ROMs can have bugs, it's a matter of testing them out and finding which one works for you best. Most of the stuff available is good for daily driver use though
Sent from my Evita
Thanks again. I assume if you root your phone there is a way to restore it to it's original condition should you have any warranty issues, or wish to sell it on when you upgrade?

Yes you can run an RUU (ROM update utility) which takes it back to a completely stock state. Your bootloader will have flags which say "tampered" or "unlocked" or both, but I believe the One has s-off now so I think removing them is possible, best to check at that forum though.
