I really hate the Samsung media scanner.
Hate isn't even a strong enough word. If you have ever noticed, it scans the READ ONLY system on every boot. Then it scans SD card. Scanning the system is where the phone gets most sluggish though.
Well, I tried my best to hack that feature out and still haven't been able to.
I did find a workaround though:
D/MediaScanner( 2798): prescan return
D/MediaScanner( 2798): Start Original /system/media/
D/MediaScanner( 2798): found .nomedia, skipping directory
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2056318/update-template/media_scanner_fast.zip
Its a dirty way of fixing it, but hey, it works.
So did you just add a .nomedia and that works. Sweet!

Yeah quite simple and to the point
The only thing you want to watch for is that you don't wipe.
If you wipe, you lose your ringtone index. Easily fixed by removing the file or reflashing a rom though.
so we just flash this in cwr
after flashing this;
what the response on boot?
the media scan will be much faster or will it not scan?
It skips system and immediately moves to sd card.
Making your phone completely responsive, and halving the scan time.
Nice little hack as most of the media is located on the SD card anyway..
Flashed from my Fascinate running SFC v2.9 V00D00 on TapaTalk..
I've noticed some theme's will place themed apps in the system/app folder. Will this mod keep those files from being seen after install?
Or if, like me, you hate the stupid thing running automatically at all:

You can use the apk to turn it on or off.
Or you could set up a bash script to do it. It would be very easy to make an enable/disable icon using this and a shortcut creator.
Code:
su
pm disable com.android.providers.media/com.android.providers.media.MediaScannerReceiver
pm enable com.android.providers.media/com.android.providers.media.MediaScannerReceiver
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2056318/update-template/media_scan_scripts.zip
fast_media --disables media scanning of system
default_media --enables media scanning of system.
anyway this can be added as a toggle on/off feature to sc 2.10 when you get around to it? that would be awesome.
Getting a 404 error on this link. BTW was this a CWM zip file?

If you go to this link and install the 'MediaScannerTogglerROOT1.8.apk', it works perfectly.
Running SuperClean 2.9 voodoo
Link is fixed. The difference between this is media scanner never has to be re-enabled, or disabled, unless switching roms, or wiping data.
The problem with turning it off, is eventually, it will get turned back on, or you have to do it each time you change media on sd card.
IMO, I like this way better.
thanks for this!
I think I just peed myself a little in happiness.
So... I'm confused. It won't scan the phone now? Is any media even on the phone?

I compiled this for someone at DroidForums and I figured I would post it here.
In order to complete all of these steps, you will need:
ROM Manager
Titanium Backup Pro
Root Explorer
SetCPU
Odin v1.3
A file manager like Astro to install the APKs.
SetCPU can be downloaded here for free: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419
It can also be bought from the Market. The others also need to be purchased or downloaded.
In order to root, follow the instructions here: http://forum.androidcentral.com/verizon-fascinate-rooting-roms-hacks/33899-how-root.html
Here is a link for Mac users: http://forum.androidcentral.com/ver...s/34188-rooting-using-mac-video-tutorial.html
ClockworkMod Recovery Installation instructions are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=942021 You can also flash the new recovery with Rom Manager, but for now, I recommend the recovery in the link.
At this point, you should be rooted with CWM Recovery. Now, it's time to install Froyo.
Follow the link here, and you will find Odin files for quickly installing EB01: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/sa...roms-w-root-new-clockwork-updated-2-11-a.html
NOTE: You will need to wipe when you go from 2.1 to 2.2. Be sure to back up everything before the upgrade.
Now, you will need a rom. I would recommend SuperClean by Adrynalyne: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910921 It includes a kernel and there are Voodoo and NonVoodoo versions. This will remove all bloatware, including TouchWiz and Bing. However, the browser will still search with Bing. Then, use the themes sub-forum to find a theme.
You can use ROM Manager-Download-sonofskywalker3 to find all sorts of options. Stock apps, de-Binged browsers, new boot animations, widgets, etc. Anything you didn't want removed can be downloaded there.
If you need to return to stock, you'll need to use Odin. Ask any questions in this thread and I will do my best to answer them. You can also post a thread on XDA(make sure it's in the right section!), or visit the IRC at: webchat.freenode.net channel: #samsung-fascinate
I take no credit for anything here.

I'm not sure. I'll edit my OP and say it's very risky, since you are the only person I have heard of that it doesn't cause issues.
uh oh
I just deleted all these apps. Am i in trouble when froyo comes out?
It looks like wireless tether doesn't work for me, and I did delete 3G Mobile Hotspot, so maybe it makes sense to go slow at this before jumping in. I'm not having any problem connecting to wi-fi, though, so if that's all you want then maybe you'll be fine. I use backup assistant so I can't comment on what could happen if that's deleted.
Freezing/hiding apps seems to be the best way to make sure you aren't looking for backup apps somewhere...

Yes it is. That's why I recommend it. I also find it easier than moving them to the SD card with root explorer like a lot of people are doing, but to each his own.
EDIT: I tried Wireless Tether, and it started just fine. I didn't try connecting anything to it, but I know it at least starts. I can't tell if they blocked tethering or if deleting Mobile Hotspot affects it.

Here's the system dump: http://forum.androidcentral.com/fascinate-roms-hacks/32839-fascinate-system-dump.html
I have removed [moved] both Backup Assistant and Mobile 3G Hotspot and I have no issues with Wireless Tether. Before assuming Mobile 3G Hotspot is the cause of your issues, try verifying Wireless Tether works for you beforehand. There was a thread dedicated to Wireless Tether not working by a senior member only to find out it was user error.
There's more than one way to move/remove apps and I'm sure we all can confirm deleting .apk files is NOT the best option. I've used Titanium Backup to freeze apps which I could not locate the .apk for, but I prefer moving the .apk files. This is because I've been in a force-close loop after moving a file and the only solution would be to move the file back and reboot the phone. This can be done via ADB. If you freeze an app and you get in a force-close loop you may not be able to use Titanium Backup's GUI to un-freeze an app.
I move to the SD card to free up space on the phone, which comes in handy if you're replacing stock apps from other places. Plus, it gives me an easy view of what to move to/from the /system/app folder if I need to put apps back when there is an OTA (or if someone asks me "what apps did you remove?")
Move/rename/freeze... pick your poison, but please don't delete.

Yup. If you delete, you have to handle the process of moving apps from the system dump. I don't think a factory reset would work, since the apps aren't there and it has nowhere to restore them from.

The lag fix seems to have very mixed results. Some people say it has caused lag, some have trouble un-doing it, some notice no difference. So I haven't taken the risk. I also need the internal memory it takes away. I would consider it if it would fix those occasional stutters and freezes, and actually make a difference.

Here is a great script that is apparently making its way through the android world. It increases the SD card read/write by reading in larger chunks. You can get it to work on Fascinate somehow.
Many of us in the Eris world have gotten this to work and my now SLOW eris reads pictures and related SD functions twice as fast as my fascinate!! Now to start testing this on my ever godly fascinate...
sharing the wealth:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013554
This can technically be hard coded into ROMS, but im no ROM developer (hint hint)
----update-----
I didn't find anyone in the Fascinate world doing this, but apparently the Epic has this somewhat working:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1021647
----update----
And here are the Epic versions flashable files... i'll test them later today to see if they work on the fascinate:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12660493&postcount=73
Sounds great. I was just complaining about my pictures loading slowly yesterday, and here you are to save the day!
I'm backing up my phone now, and will flash the 2k file.
I did test this app, which essentially does the same thing, and it does work great on the fascinate. But, its an app that has to be turned on, and wont stick at boot. Although the app does have a set at boot option... thats still one more app running at boot.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/sd-increase/com.sdincrease.it
I'll post results on my flashing of the scripts shortly.
ok I can confirm the following did stick at boot.
njoy everyone:
SDCardSpeedFix2048KB.zip
I tried that app, and I'm not sure that it even worked. You probably know more than I do, but after doing the setting in SD Speed Increase i can open the file and it still says 128. i also tried it on my eris and it did change the file to 2048. Weird. Is there gonna be a link to a flashable in your post. thanx...

check my last link in the OP. All the various flashable files are in that link. I used 2k version. Thats what I used in my Eris.
the app you have to use the slider to adjust the amount (again use 2048) click on that RED/ORANGE button with the arrow and it will set it.
what it says in "Status" is what is defined in your phone. So thats how you can confirm it worked. Or just open up the gallery and compare a large folder before the flash(or app change), and then run the same gallery folder after the flash (or app change). It should be MUCH faster.
Ok, now the 2048k from that link worked great.
But just for the record, I did push that button to finalize the setting in SD Speed Increase . I don't know why it didn't change the file...oh well, thanks a lot sir!

jt1134 implemented this about a week ago, and I and several others did the same with the custom kernels that were released. If it's being set in the initramfs and not via an init.d script, you can change the values all you want and it likely isn't doing anything to change the read/write performance.

From what I can tell the flash files are writing to the init.d. So it should be sticking. This is still good to know as some people might not be using custom kernels, or might want to change from whatever defaults the kernel devs have pre-set.

If the change is applied in the initramfs, that will likely take precedence over the init.d script, but I have no idea how it works if there are two things telling it what to run at.
Looking for a light/stripped down ROM or some way of making the ROM not show any programs that relates as a phone. My goal is to just use it via wifi and spotify, and I don't want my youngest kids grab the phone and dial emergency calls.. Someway of remove the "phone functions"
I didn't remove the phone function, but hacked Rosie to show and link to 'Music' instead of 'Phone' and the right button was also remapped to go to the browser. Would that be sufficient?

Just saw this today and remembered this thread.
"Any phone, any ROM: Wi-Fi only mode (disable cell radio)"
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/25016-modany-phone-any-rom-wi-fi-only-mode-disable-cell-radio/
"What it does:
Removes unnecessary apps (Messaging.apk, Phone.apk, TelephonyProvider.apk)
Completely turns off cell radio on bootup
Installs the radiooptions binary in case your ROM does not include it"
From personal experience on a sense rom WiFi drops in and out regularly even though my router is fine and every other device connected to it is fine. It is annoying as it always happens to drop when I need data such as when I'm browsing Google+ or need to search something on Google Now. WiFi drops, 3G connects, 3G disconnects, WiFi connects, all of that creates about a 5 second wait time which is NOT negligible.
Anyway, I started reading up on what manages the WiFi connections in Android, and more specifically Sense because I don't get this issue whatsoever on CM10. I may have found the possible verdict as I successfully no longer get WiFi drops and it stays constantly connected to my access point.
What I found was that the default settings.apk from sense is what manages the WiFi connections so I decided to stick in a stock AOSP settings.apk file in there in its' stead to see if that helped. It did greatly help, and on top of that on all settings screens such as app info screens and app instalation screens I get the AOSP look that I love. It really does complete any 'sense-less' ROM.
So without further ado, I have attatched the stock settings.apk with a few mods to make it work on sense flawlessly. Please make your /system partition writeable and overwrite the sense settings.apk in /system/app/ with the one attatched. Please let me know if this works for you guys too. For reporting make sure to put your ROM version in.
Do the permissions need to be changed?

Cool, nice job man. This is the first I've seen of the AOSP menus, very cool. I'm looking forward to CM10 even more now. I wasn't having any wifi issues, but I liked the sound of having a little touch of AOSP to hold me over until an official release is out.

You bet...you can download AOSP status bar icons through the Venom hub and then apply them in the Venom tweaks menu. I personally prefer the stock icons though because they are a bit more crisp looking.
To those with wifi issues. If you have sense, go to wifi settings choose frequency then change to 2.4 ghz.

Hey Art2Fly, I would suggest you either make a new thread or change the title of this one... This is a pretty big deal outside of the WiFi issue! I am more excited about the AOSP styled settings menu! That's pretty significant, and I would imagine that all the devs making non-Sense ROMs will be baking this into their ROM. Nice job - I love the new look!
Premo - I totally agree on the ICS theme... Not quite polished enough for me yet. So close to pure AOSP without having AOSP... Haha. It's really impressive how much Sense they removed.

That's strange. Yeah, factory reset won't help because that clears the data and cache partitions only, but this modification is to the system partition. You could try downloading a Sense based rom (like Mean, Clean, Fresh, etc.), open up the zip file and pull the settings.apk out of there to replace the one you've got now...it should be the same as the one you had originally. Added the Help and Tricks(or whatever HTC calls it) widget, I had left it out by mistake
V3
ShowMe.apk,.odex and HTC_Widget_ShowMe.apk,.odex are no longer removed because their removal caused other HTC widgets to stop working
If you know of any other safe to remove bloatware, please let me know and I will add it
Fix
Reinstalls ShowMe.apk,.odex and HTC_Widget_ShowMe.apk,.odex
Undo
Reinstalls all the removed apps. http://db.tt/kSvKSQCv
Boot Animation Sound Remover
Removes the boot-up sound...the "DROID" thing...'cause I got annoyed at listening to it over and over....
Camera Shutter Remover
Removes the camera shutter sound and the video record start sound.
Well it turns out this method doesn't work on this phone...but quick, easy fix....HTC lets you turn it off in the camera settings: open camera, click the settings icon, scroll down to camera interface and uncheck shutter sound
very good, easier than sitting here freezing it all in Titanium. I tried using Absolute System but being S-on for now means no go. Thanks
I manually deleted them via the built in file manager in twrp recovery.

Yeah I started by doing that....but I decided it was taking too long and it would be easier to do an "adb shell ls" in /system/app and just copy and paste the names of the ones I wanted to get rid of into a zip
Although looking back, that way would've been quicker than making this...but whatever
Just curious. To anyone who has run this, how much space did it free up on the internal storage?

Any idea where Amex Serve is located/what it is named?

I believe /system has its own, separate amount of storage...so deleting these doesn't get you more space in /data
Not 100 percent sure on that though.
Yeah, just looked in Titanium Backup, System has 1.84GB and Data has 12.2GB
And anyway, these apps are a few megabytes...so....at most maybe a couple hundred megabytes of system are freed up

Amex Serve is "VZW_Serve.apk and VZW_Serve.odex"
So /system/app/VZW_Serve.apk

Duh... sorry, the VZW prefix messed me up.
Is there an easy way to modify the script to remove stuff that I want to stay? I've had issues before when I changed a file in a Zip as I don't have a Zip program installed. Using Win7 64-bit.

Just open the zip(don't extract it), navigate to "META-INF\com\google\android" and copy updater-script to your desktop(or anywhere really). Then open it with notepad(I used notepad++, but notepad should work fine) and edit the line that says "delete("/system/app/......". When you've finished adding or removing the apps you want to keep or want to remove save the file and copy and paste it back into the zip.
Let me know if you need me to clarify anything

Hey, does this script (or one of the apk's in the script) remove the HTC widgets? (I don't have Mail, power bar, toggle widgets, etc.) I believe they were there before I ran the script...

I let all the bloatware apps update via the Play Store when I restored my phone after unlocking. It freed up 200MB for me on the data side, no idea on the system side.
Looking back at it, I think the removal of HTC_Widget_ShowMe.apk/HTC_Widget_ShowMe.odex gets rid of all the HTC Widgets. If so, does anyone happen to have a copy of them so I can push them back to my phone?
EDIT: OK, clearly I am a moron, the ShowMe removal did not affect the HTC widgets. I still don't have things like the Mail widget when I go to put a new one on 1 of my screens though. I can see the APK via Root explorer. Anyone have any idea on what the issue may be?

Rexdog, I would appreciate if you would post this info. Would like to have the camera sound muted.
Thanks for sharing your work!

I think you're on to something. I'm also missing the option of adding the HTC widgets although the widget I previously had is still on my home screen.
Somehow this is hiding those widgets from the Widget Screen but not removing them from the system.

Did not realise that was doing that....sorry guys....I'll try to find a copy of them and upload it here for y'all.... And as soon as I'm at my computer I'll edit the zip so it doesn't delete those

Whew, thankfully it's not just me... anyone else confirm that they cannot add any new HTC branded widgets? Or, if you ran this script and can still add widgets, did you omit any of the APK's from the script?
Rexdog: I have the DroidDNA system dump zip file... if you can just post the ADB command to flash the file(s) back, I may be able to find out which one will get this feature back by the time you get to a PC.
