Download a 2.1 Rom such as xtrsense. Boot into recovery and make a nandroid backup of what you are currently using. Do a full wipe and flash the 2.1 rom. Boot it up and sign into google. Open market and install apn backup/restore. Open the app and backup apn's. Reboot into recovery and restore the backup of your rom. Once you boot open market and install apn backup/restore again. Open the app and restore apn's. I know it's worked for others and another guy had suggested another app that doesn't require the flashing but I forget what it was and how he said to do it. Hope this helps and you get things back working again

Before you take that step, try something easier first:
1. Download "APN OnOff" from the market and install it.
2. Run it and and choose "Show APN list" in the middle of the screen.
3. Press the Menu soft key and choose "Reset to default" on the right.
4. You can try it again now, if this doesn't work, reboot and try again.
If that doesn't work:
A. Download and install "APN Backup and Restore" from the market.
B. Download the zip file I have attached.
C. Unzip it and put the xml file that's in there in a folder called "ApnBackupRestore" in the root of the SD card.
D. Run APN Backup and Restore and choose "Delete APNs". Then choose "Restore APNs" and restore them from the xml file I gave you, which should automatically be listed when you choose that.
Once again, you can try before and after a reboot. Hopefully one of these methods works for you.
Edit: @CondemnedSoul, we were typing at the same time.
FYI the APN backup I attached is from a version of xtrSENSE that was based off the July OTA (probably xtrSENSE v4.5 through 4.6.5). Fresh from a boot, without having done anything else first.

I wonder if btbf0 keeps some of his advice in text files? I should keep this one in a text file for future use, eh?

That depends. Are you Vulcan? j/k I've never had that problem once, either. I originally used that second method to help when tethering used to fail for me, and it did help. Then I found APN OnOff, and it was that much quicker and simpler, especially if you don't have a backup handy. It seems to have helped at least some people with SMS/MMS problems just like the second method does. Who knows if it can ever completely replace the second method so I'll keep recommending both just in case.

I have looked into APNs enough sometime in the past that I noticed weird things, too. Such as the differences between the July OTA APNs and those in non-stock based ROMs, but obviously the non-stock based ROMs work, at least most of the time and definitely do to start with. Bizarre. If the APNs are so critical, why do other APNs work at all?
Edit: I wonder if the APNs included with the March OTA are any different?

I'm wondering if any of the people having this issue have or had quick settings installed at some point or if they have it currently and use it. Seems to mess up the Incredible's apns. I found this post on another site and would be intereted if one of these guys with the mms problem would be willing to make a backup of their apns and post it to see if something is being disabled like what's happened before on the dinc. If so It could possibly be real easy to fix lol. Check it out...

They're exactly the same, I just looked. At least as far as the APNs in the March 2011 OTA released by btbf0 compared to the APNs in xtrROM v5.0, which was released before the March 2011 OTA (not to be confused with xtrSENSE v5.0, which was released after and based on the March 2011 OTA).

Another good reminder. I forgot I might not have had specific SMS/MMS issues, but I did have a problem with Data at all, and I used Quick Settings back in June or July around that time. I found that it was Quick Settings method, at least at the time, for turning data on and off. Apparently Quick Settings isn't alone in this, some apps/widgets still use this "evil" method. I'm under the impression that EasySwitch, which I bought when running xtr ROMs, but is redundant under CM6+ with notification power widgets, uses a proper method for turning data on and off.
I wonder if anyone knows why the APNs used in the non-stock based ROMs are different from the stock APNs, and why they work anyway.

I don't know... the stock one has all the 0's where the rom's have different numbers. All the roms are the same but not the same as the stock and the stock has 3 apn's where the roms I've looked at so far have 2. I have no idea lol.

That reminds me, that I think there's an inconsistency between what APNs the flashable ROM files contain, and what ends up being in a running ROM. Are those three from the actual OTA file or from a running OTA ROM?
What I've given so far are from the flashable March 2011 OTA file provided by bftb0 (Reference ROM v1) and xtrROM v5.0 (based on the July OTA), without actually flashing them and looking in system/etc.
I just looked and FlashBack21 v2 (no radio version) has the same APNs in the flashable file.

Ntelos appears to be contracted with Sprint/Nextel.

I'd try a Sprint cab.
I think backing up the service programming with QPST and writing it to the phone after flashing may work. I used to do that to E815's when flashing them to Bell firmware. I am pretty new to a lot of this though, so don't explicitly rely on anything I say
You could at least save the programming for later retrieval using QPST. Just throwing out ideas here. Maybe dcd or GC can chime in for a real answers...

So just to be clear then, I can not do what I was trying to do, correct? I don't feel quite so dumb if that's the case. This is the first time I have ever tried to do anything remotely close to this. I am just really worried that I will destroy my phone. I guess I will stop my experiment then. At least until it's not so risky.
Once again, thanks for sharing your knowledge. If you do figure out how to make it work, please let me know. [email protected] is my email. I'm still a liitle unsure of how to check for replies. I had to leave my post open on my desktop.

Hi guys! so after giving my mesmerize to my family to use, I have gotten it back. In the course of them having my phone, they took it to the carrier because they were having problems with it, so it has been flashed back to stock. I was running avatar on it. I believe 4.2.. I know that there was a way to convert fascinate roms over to mesmerize roms back then. I think I did it one time myself. it was a small little program that would do the conversion. i am interested in flashing one of these kitkat roms that you guys have over on the fascinate side. Is there an easy way to do this now? Thank you guys in advance.

yes but unfortunately 'voice dialer' does not work in any - kit kat - 4.4 - cm11 - ROM that i'm aware of , I have successfully used the program 'elixir 2' to edit the file though and posted about here if you need to search for it...
\system\etc\apns-conf.xml
this is the info that the file should need:
<apn carrier="USCC" mcc="311" mnc="220" apn="internet" mmsc="http://mmsc1.uscc.net/mmsc/MMS" authtype="3" port="80" mmsport="80" type="mms" />
then appropriately in the 'edit APNs' section, too
I know the PA ROMs since January should have the proper stuff and a built in function for the xml and an included APN editor (so no voice dialer or other programs needed) and fully functioning
also check this post out for some other information of a ROM that has the proper apn stuff as well but is slightly unstable and gives random reboots but otherwise fully functional
.

Unfortunately, a lot of this is over my head. I have learned just enough about this stuff to flash a custom recovery, flash roms, and "devil" kernel for all of the cool over clocking mods... Every rom I have used was already set up for mesmerize. All I needed to do was flash it.

You are using a AT&T M8, correct? Where did you find the CM12 rom? Did the ROM you installed mention anything about flashing a kernel?

Yup, ATT M8..... the nightly from today from here http://www.cmxlog.com/12/m8/ .... could it be because of the new radio that came with the 4.4.4 ota?
still nothing. it's like it doesnt save the apn settings

Are you saving them? You will need to save before you exit.
You will also want to reset after saving. This isn't a must, but sometimes required to take effect.

That is going to be a tough one to answer. Most folks haven't even gotten the OTA yet. Maybe once more folks have gotten the OTA, we'll know whether they have the same problem or not.
Did you try a couple older nightlies?

As long as the only step to saving them is to click save in the top right hand corner menu, then yes, i'm saving them
I now have the message "Access point name settings are not available for this user"

I can't seem to find a fix for this... Any update(s)?
Hey all I am having the same problem. I updated to 4.4.4 this morning on my AT&T m8. I installed cm12 through TWRP with the right gapps. I didn't see any information about a kernel that needed installed with it. Everything worked fine except I had no cellular connection. I checked the APN list and there was no APN listed, only the message "Access point name settings are not available for this user". I tried making a new APN with At&t settings but when I hit save the APN was not in the settings list. I was again greeted with the message "Access point name settings are not available for this user". I followed some threads for general APN issues and toggles airplane mode, tried other nightlies, made sure the sim card was correctly inserted to no avail. Any help is greatly appreciated!
I read a few things about changing the conf-apn.xml file in the android code but I have no idea how to go about that or if that is even the right solution.
Thanks everyone!
Well, I'm not sure at this point, where to send either one of you. bford152, redpoint73 and I have given you multiple suggestions, none of which have been helpful.
It may be best for both of you to see if the Dev for this version of CM12 has a G+ chat, or the like, in which the users of this ROM can communicate. It is unfortunate they have not posted their ROM here on XDA, as that would help understand the issue.
I would assume (now that there are 2 of you with the same issue) that there may be underlying problems with the build.

Ummm.... All of the ROM's that I've flashed have been from xda. I did notice that my access point when running the stock 4.4.4 states ATT Nextgenphone... Maybe that's the issue? NEw software supporting VoLTE nmight have a new apn that hasnt been updated? Thanks for all the help Tony and redpont73. Last question. Without being s-off is there anything that I can install to bring me to a Lollipop build in the same way CM12 did? I'm going to flash cm12 1-27-15 nightly with a different gapps package right now... I'll see if anything has changed
I have HTC 10 unlocked running on verizon by flashing VzwHTC10_1.19.605.22radio.img but lately I've had some issues receiving some text messages.
I've tried re-flashing radios and google messenger, verizon, and textra and it doesn't seem to matter. I was wondering if someone has maybe gotten a new radio file that works better or any other ideas to fix this?
Also I use verizon messenger on my pc and all the messages seem to load up instantly on their from people but will sometimes never show up on my phone.

The first two are radios and the rest are ruu. I don't want Verizon bloat ware on my phone so I only have the radio flashed
I actually solved the problem by deactivating Verizon messenger on my computer.
Not to Hijack your post, but do you think you could help me reflash my radios? I currently flashed the 1.19.605.22 radios and still have them on my desktop, but can't remember how to do it. I need to update my phone to this software (http://www.phonearena.com/news/HTC-10-security-software-update-December_id89330), but when I do it I have a feeling I will have to reflash and I can't remember how. Do you think you could help me over skype or something?
Yeah sure

*I am not condoning or advising anyone to mix firmwares*
However, if I "were" going to do so and flash a Vzw radio on a US Unlocked model running a version of Nougat:
I would personally use the Vzw Nougat Radio image found HERE, rather then an older Marshmallow one.
If you choose to do so, you are doing so at your own will.
Just my 2 cents...carry on. :good:
