Recovery mods won't seem to "Stick"... - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, all. I'm running a rooted At+t locked dell streak. I've install ROM Manager and "Successfully" flashed Clockwordmod several times. However, every time i try to use it (Boot into recovery mode, for instance) it will just reboot, as if you didn't ask. More over, when I try to access it normally (pressing both volume buttons on boot) it launches into stock recovery mode (with the four options - Factory reset, install from pkg, etc).
What should I do?

Stock firmwares automatically replace the recovery image on boot every time, you need to be on a custom rom for it to not do that

Silly me, I was trying to boot into the Clockworkmod recovery mode so that I could install a custom rom...how do I go about circumventing this?

use fastboot -i 0x413c reboot (after installing the recovery)
as it's rebooting IMMEDIATELY hit vol up+down + power, if you hit the dell logo, repeat it because you're too late
if you hit it fast enough, you can use cwm/streakmod once on stock (it'll still overwrite it with stock recovery after reboot)

The ROM Manager app doesn't play well with the Streak.
I recommend Streakmod recovery. I use this version.
If you aren't installing a custom ROM you can make a custom recovery stick by renaming install-recovery.sh to something else (IE - install-recovery.sh.norun). On my phone I found the file in /etc and /system/etc , you would need a root explorer or other root method to do this.

It appears I am more noobish than I had originally considered. Is there a step by step guide to installing a recovery mod? For instance, I am not sure what relevance "fastboot -i 0x413c reboot" has here. Is this something I should type in, and if so, where and under what circumstances?
Thanks!

This streakdroid guide may help.
You flash the recovery image with fastboot and the command to reboot that was in a previous post lets you restart the phone without pulling the battery.
What exactly is on your phone now? Menu->Settings->About phone
Example attached.

On the stock roms go to /system/etc and rename install-recovery.sh to install-recovery.sh.bak (or delete it if you would like) and then whatever recovery you flash will persist after a reboot

Fastboot/Recovery/Reboot/Flash Batch

Here is a batch file I have made to do a couple things for an HTC EVO 3D through adb. NO NEED TO INSTALL ADB!!!
It gives you three choices, either reboot to fastboot, which can supply you with a command prompt, reboot to recovery through fastboot, (YES, HBOOT 1.5 USERS CAN USE THIS TO FLASH TO THE BOOT PARTITION, THIS INCLUDES KERNELS, AND RECOVERIES). Or to just ADB reboot (comes in handy for Freezes or Lockups).
To avoid any frustration, I have included adb and fastboot in the folder (NO ADB INSTALL).
I have not included a recovery image, so you will have to download one of your choice, place it in the folder, and rename it to "Recovery.img" (NO Quotation Marks). If a recovery doesn't boot, no worries, this doesn't flash it, just places the recovery in a temporary partition to boot, your current recovery will stay intact
DON'T WORRY, IT SOUNDS MORE DIFFICULT THAN IT IS, YOU GET USED TO IT.
1. Unzip to any folder on your computer
2. Copy your choice of recovery (Recovery.img) to folder
3. Run "Reboot.bat"
4. Make your choice of Fastboot, Recovery, or Reboot
a) If you choose Fastboot, you have the choice of opening a prompt for manual fastboot commands. Choose yes (Y) or no (N).
b1) If you choose Recovery, your phone will reboot into Fastboot
I CAN NOT STRESS ENOUGH, TO WAIT UNTIL THE PHONE HAS ENTERED FASTBOOT, BEFORE CONTINUING TO RECOVERY. No harm will be done to your phone, but it wont boot recovery unless "fastboot" gets the dang command...
b2) Press any button, AFTER your phone has entered fastboot. This will send the command to your phone to boot the recovery you placed in the folder, not the one flashed on your phone. (Good Way To Test Recoveries Before Flashing).
c) If you choose Reboot... UM??? Your phone will reboot...
5. YOU ARE DONE!!!
IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO OPEN THE BATCH TO EXAMINE IT, YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME. I JUST ASK THAT YOU DO NOT MODIFY OR COPY IT WITHOUT MY PERMISSION.
I am currently in the process of making a batch that will flash the recovery as well.

New recovery flashing capabilities
I have added a recovery flashing capability to the batch, it has a lot of warnings, but it needs them... It just flashes the previously stated recovery.img, instead of booting a temporary recovery through fastboot...

[Q] Can't boot CWM Recovery consistently! Help please :)

I am unlocked and rooted. I checked with a root check app and it says i am...
Not sure if this has already been posted, but whenever i flash Romracer's cmw5 I can only boot into CWM Recovery under one condition. And that is:
Right after I type "fastboot reboot" and hold the volume down button right as it's rebooting. From here, when I select Android recovery, i can boot into CWM. Any other times, I.E. If i let the phone boot up to the point where I can make phone calls.and other stuff and power down afterwards and try to boot into CWM via Android recovery, the android with the exclamation pops up. At which point, I have to re-flash CWM every time.
Also, I finally found recovery-install.sh, however whenever i try to select it with astro file manager, it says "activity not found" or something like that and won't let me delete it. Does this have any effect on not being able to boot into CWM Recovery?
Thanks for the help, having to reflash CWM is annoying.
PS: I downloaded the file "Blue 5.0.2.7-atrix5 / ZIP version" from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500 and the file name saved as
"recovery-blue-atrix5.img". So when I type it into the command prompt, I would actually type the exact command of
"fastboot flash recovery recovery-blue-atrix5.img". I know the directions say that the command is "fastboot flash recovery recovery-atrix5.img" Is there any chance that my problem is resulting from this discrepancy in the file name?
Update: I found the CWM boot method inside CM7 itself and it works. Does this mean i'm scott free? Or should i continue to try and delete
"recovery-install.sh"?
If you have that file in /etc, it should be deleted. You don't need to use a file manager for that, a terminal or adb will do.

keep loosing recovery mod on reboot

followed this to unlock bootloader - all went fine...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447319
and this to flash recovery, all went well - except the instructions omitted to include the requirement to flash the img file using "fastboot flash boot ....img" (you cant "run" and img file!)
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/5...tra-clockworkmod-twrp-recovery-bootloader.htm
Switched off, back on again , holding volume up and voila the clockword recovery was available.
But when I rebooted and held the volume up again, no recovery mod, it seemed to be overwritten.
Had to flash the recovery image again to get into recovery, then lost it again on next normal boot??
Any ideas?

Bppo Loop and Recovery App

I successfully got my Tablet Z out of boot loop. It got into boot loop after trying to start in recovery via NDRUtils (obviously I have root). I've used it before with no issues, so don't know why it happened.
I can never seem to get into recovery using the volume buttons. What do you guys use to get into recovery, can you suggest a good app? I use power toggles app to turn off wifi, bluetooth etc and there is an option to restart in recovery, but I did not wish to try in out just yet.
Edit, bloody hell, I typed boot loop wrong!
im surprised those apps actually work, the majority parse ADB reboot recovery which would not work with the tab Z. The tab Z uses a FOTAkernel which has the recovery baked in.
to get into recovery, from cold start power on tablet, LED flashes white, logo comes up about after 2 to 3 secs LED will flash blue/purple/white (depending upon boot kernel), press the vol + button, if the tab does not enter recovery then one of two things, boot kernel does not have recovery or recovery is not compatible
use fastboot flash boot <boot.img> to flash a boot kernel with recovery, it best to extract the boot.img from the root of the zip file for the ROM you intend yo use, read the thread for the ROM thoroughly to check if there arent issues with the boot.img (i think a while back there was some issue with some of the boot.img)
NB i have never got the method for installing TWRP from their official web page to work and found that i needed to reverse the procedure otherwise the boot.img wont go into recovery
goes without saying, tab needs to be bootloader unlocked and rooted

[Q] Problem with flashing twrp on Snapdragon RM3

I downloaded the twrp .img from the official website and flashed it using 'fastboot flash recovery twrp.img' and everything was shown Okay in cmd. Then I did 'fastboot reboot' and then after phone rebooted I went to recovery mode using volume up and power button but there was no TWRP there, only stock recovery was there. What went wrong? I flashed many times but same result
I had the same result like yours several weeks ago. And finally choose another method to install TWRP. Try below thread , it is easier.
http://en.miui.com/thread-296053-1-1.html
Your stock rom is replacing stock recovery every time you boot it.
TWRP needs a modified boot image flashed to make it permanent when used with official roms.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/red...official-twrp-3-0-2-0-recovery-redmi-t3352966
If you don't have the modified boot, make sure to boot into TWRP first after flashing it.
Handy way to get TWRP booted is to temporarily boot it using "fastboot boot <name of twrp.img>"
Once booted this way, use it to flash the TWRP image, then reboot into TWRP recovery you just flashed.
Once I had that done, after making a backup, I flashed a custom rom (xiaomi.eu) and TWRP remained permanent for me.
If your wanting to stay on an official rom, see this thread which has an Universal Boot Img Patcher.
Is Your Bootloader Unlocked? Cant flash on a locked BL buddy...

2. DO NOT install the official, unmodified TWRP...
select a TWRP from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/guide-redmi-note-3-available-twrps-t3406708
I Used the cofface TWRP
3. COPY Twrp.img to internal storage.....
fastboot boot TWRP.img
4. TWRP boots automatically... Press the button on Right to change device language....
Swipe right to allow modifications
5. Go to install... > flash Image. select TWRP.img
tap on reboot.... somewhere there, you will be asked to
1. install SuperSU
2. prevent phone from reverting to original recovery...
Swipe right on both.
Cheers!
When you do the "fastboot reboot" command, you should right away , press the volume + and power buttons together, so the phone boots into TWRP and not into the system. If you just execute the command and let it go , the stock recovery overwrites TWRP.
after entering "fastboot flash recovery twrp.IMG" don't reboot and don't entre "fastboot reboot"....you have to directly press power + vol up...you will able to boot into twrp
