hi everyone. I have installed third party apps for sms, contacts, and email. I moved the respective sys apps to sd card so I wasn't getting multiple notifications of the same event. Now my third party widgets do not know how to find contacts and the dialer. How can I configure where widgets link to?

I have moved almost all of my system apps to my SD card. For instance, I moved Google search to my SD and when I mount my SD or when I reboot my phone the Google search bar is gone and it doesn't list it in my widget choices anymore. So, I learned that if I use a program such as titanium backup, absolute system root, root explorer etc. to uninstall it and then reinstall it, it reappears in my widget list choices. Make sure to make a backup of the app in question first before uninstalling it. I don't know if this is what you were asking or looking for but it's what it sounded like to me. I hope it helps.

I know what you mean and thanks for responding but here's an example: I moved the stock contacts to sd and installed phonebook 2.0. Now scrollable contacts widget doesn't know what to do when I select a contact so nothing happens. I want to link scrollable contacts with phonebook 2.0

Do you have titanium backup? If so, backup the stock contact app and then uninstall it and then try to activate the widget and see if that will allow phonebook 2.0 to be recognized.

hi guys I managed to root my x10 2.1 with z4root and use titanium to freeze timescape and other crap.
before with 1.6 it stopped my phone book from working. but now its fine without the bloat crap running. but what it has done its stopped my contacts from linking automatically to Facebook.
to get their pictures up I have to manually set it in the contacts edit menu then their pic comes up.
anyone found a way of a work around so the se apps stop depending on timecrap?
could do with a 3 party camera operator all in all. don't evenl like mediascape. keyboard is ****, I'm is h the HTC keyboard hack, are their any updates on the sweet keyboard as it sometimes goes crazy and keeps the button pressed.
thanks for reading this is my first post and I have to say I have been following, and what a bad ass community!

I have the same question, is timescape the only way to integrate pictures into the phonebook?
download the facebook apk from the market... it allows to synchronize the phonebook with facebook contacts...
yeah I did that good idea.
but I had to import all the contacts.
there isn't away to link your contacts manually straight to the phone book. so I now have alot of contacts that I don't want.
I wish we could import our selected friends list from Facebook instead of all its contacts.
so what I've done is put all my contacts that I use that I have numbers for into my favorite list. but I wish I could create a shortcut straight to favorite list rather than phone book.
one thing I'm interested to find out is that if I remove my Facebook contacts will the linked numbers keep their link with Facebook on the original phone entries.....
to scared in case it doesn't work otherwise it took to long to link and it would of been a waste of time.

Sadly, to do what you want you will need timescape

well some good news I re set Facebook app to sync only my contacts. now it removed all the Facebook entries and left my originals intact with links to their Facebook.

When using handsent, or other 3rd party messaging apps, my contacts images do not show up. Is anyone else having this problem, or know what is going on? Things are fine in the sense messaging app.

Handcent is fine on my end.

I have the same issue with mine.

I have the same issue too. I even tried to use Handcent and GOSMS PRO, and still no contact images.
Yeah, I don't get contact images either. There are sometimes when handcent does not send a message though. It will just continuously show the sending icon. Does anyone else have this problem?
Same here using Go SMS. Stock messaging app shows the pics.
Same and I'm using chomp

Ya stock program does ok, but some of kine are not even coming from FB

Glad someone else asked this, because I was just fixin to make a post about it. Also, when I had handcent on my Evo 3D, I had the option to display only mobile numbers when selecting who to send a message too, I can't seem to find that option anymore on the x. Also is anyone else having a problem with the Handcent new message counter at the top not showing the number of new messages you have? I have the counter option enabled, but it's not working. Maybe they just need to do an update.
I think there is something much bigger going on because even in lattitude on google maps contact photos of who you are following are blank.

a far bigger problem is that these third party messaging apps confuse incoming texts with the wrong people, then when you respond, it sends the text to the wrong person. ive tried go sms pro, handicent so far, but the only one that works well is the stocker
messaging app no pics
I am having the same issue even with stock messaging app and all 3rd party ones as well...
I am rooted but have not changed anything myself yet.
any suggestions?
thanks
Any ideas as to what is causing this yet? Like previously stated its doing the same thing in other apps not just messaging apps. In latitude if I click on a user icon I get an extremely crappy image. But that is only if I click on the icon which has the question mark.
I've recently noticed that if I edit a contact the pic will then show up. Or if the contact is on in GTalk the pic will be in Handcent where others will not.
hmmmm.....
The following should work which was posted by troyboytn , i have yet to get my phone yet.

His quote
You will need the three files attached to accomplish this. Very easy....
Step 1: extract facebook_photo_fix.sh from the zip and place it and sqlite3 and libncurses.so on your sd card
Step 2: Using Root Explorer, mount rw
Step 3: place the sqlite3 file in /system/xbin. Set permissions to rwxrwxrwx.
Step 4: place the libncurses.so file in /system/lib. Set permissions to rw-r-r.
Step 5: download script manager from the Play Store and open. Grant SU when prompted.
Step 6: scroll down til you find the facebook_photo_fix,sh file, click on it.
Step 7: on the next screen, click the Su box and then click run.
Step 8: after the script runs, reboot your phone and your facebook contact pics should now show up in Google Voice as well as 3rd party launchers and messaging apps
That worked, thanks.
worked for 3rd party but still not in the stock messaging app.
thanks tho
I've been playing around with GoSms pro and I noticed if you do not have HTC Facebook synced with your contacts GoSms works perfectly. This sucks though.

If your stock htc messaging app does not show, remove your Facebook account and re add it syncing all contacts

Facebook is/was the problem working good now but still seems to be qwerky when I start linking some of the contacts.
thanks a ton
Supposedly if you remove your Facebook account and install and use Friendcaster instead, FB contact photos will show up in all 3rd party apps. I just heard that Friendcaster isn't as functional as the Facebook for Android app.
Hi, I just received my Samsung Galaxy S3 in the mail today. I was using HTC Desire HD before. I was wondering how do I transfer everything such as contacts, sms, picture, app and etc from my HTC Desire HD before reseting my Desire HD to factory settings (I wish to resell it). Please advise thanks. I never rooted and don't plan to root my phones =).
Titanium backup.
use the export xml feature to export your sms/mms, call logs, & wifi hotspot configs
use the app backup feature to backup all your apps (mainly the data), then moved the backed up files to your s3 and restore it from there.
use your phone app to export your contacts as a vcard then go to your s3 and import vcard.
Titanium backup is the best way but it might have a problem for some user
it requires root
so u might want to consider that before u plan on using it
Google for your contacts is a sensible start
Thanks for the replies. Do I have to root my GS3 too in order to backup everything from Desire HD to GS3?

Yeah, however, how does google understand which one is my main account once I have google account on both devices? Wouldn't it delete everything if I remove account on my Desire HD?
To get really really thorough backups, you need to root the DHD. But I bet you can manage without that. For instance, you can backup call logs and SMS with the "Call Log Backup & Restore" and "SMS Backup & Restore" apps on the android market. You'll need to backup, then install these apps on your new phone and copy the backups to the new phone, then use them to restore.
Your contacts should be part of your google account--you can check by logging into http://contacts.google.com and checking. If they're there, you don't need to worry about backing them up. They will exist on your new phone as soon as you enter your google account information while you're setting up the phone.
I'm not sure how to delete your account from your old phone, but that won't affect your new phone. Just don't delete your contacts--removing an account is not the same as changing the data that belongs to an account.

I makes no odds, the contacts are stored in the cloud! I have two phones, regularly mess with my old S1, if you wipe it you are only wiping the on phone storage, unless you actually delete a contact through contacts on the phone nothing will get deleted from g cloud!
i would suggest you root the dhd so you can use titanium to pull data for you apps as well so any games and apps that you have can easily have their data restored.
and it's also a great app that handles nearly all your backup needs.
root is nothing scary.. it just means you can allow certain programs to access settings that require admin status.
Some answers are just...... Ehhh nvm
Contacts should be stored on your default Gmail account go to settings.... Accounts check which one of our account is syncing contacts
SMS simple answer. SMS backup and restore
Pictures well that should be on your SD card that came with the phone. Same with any other media
Now app data... Without root in think you can forget it. What I normally do is to make a nandroid backup and if need to move this to another phone I use app extractor and restore certain apps I need

sms back up and restore doesn't seem to do mms for me.. maybe i botched something. titanium though, stores it in xml form and can do all the necessary import and export as needed. why get a separate app if titanium is about as close to a one stop shop as it gets for android users...
and really... if you're on xda, why aren't you rooting your phone and enjoying one of thr biggest reason to be here (for me atleast) : to flash different roms that will suite your needs/wants.

I moved over from my desire s without root. It was a bit of a faff but ok I the end.
My apps all restored from the market. The other apps that needed side loading were installed using app saver on my DS and copying the files onto external SD.
I restored my sms with sms backup and restore (I don't use mms as I just e-mail), which was fine.
Contacts were saved to my Google account so downloaded automatically. I think you can export contacts from stock app if you want to do it that way, or use something in the market.
Finally I used angry birds backup to restore my progress.
Hope this helps. I do agree with above though, it will be a lot easier with titanium backup provided you are rooted, but if you have to root and don't mind losing all your app data then it may not be any faster.

I was trying to sync my contacts from my phone to my SD card before switching ROMs since Backup Assistant doesn't work.
Anyways, my phone froze while it was synchronizing my contacts, but apparently got them all anyways. Only problem is, since it froze, I assumed they didn't all go through and I tried over and over again. Well, now I have all of my contacts 8 times and it wants to link them all together.
Never have I been so annoyed with my contacts.
Is there any way of erasing the 7 extra listings of each contact I don't need?
Do I have a long day ahead of me by manually deleting them 1 by 1 off of my list? Or is their sync files I can find with root browser and just delete them?

If you flash another rom that has backup assistant working would it only list your contacts once? would that be easier than deleting all those?

No. It would put my contacts back but it would still sync them from my SD card and link them all together again. Plus my SD card would still have wasted space of multiple backups of the same contacts written on it.
I suppose I could delete all contacts from my SD card, download a ROM with working backup assistance... if there is one, and then save them to my SD again.
But I don't even know where the contacts sync to my SD in order to delete them.

I'm not sure how it happened, but my stock Contacts app is no longer on my phone. The Contacts storage is there, as an addon dialer can still make calls to existing contacts. I cannot, however, add contacts or do anything else that requires the Contacts app.
My Note has never been rooted and is running only apps from the Google Play store. I am hoping that there is a way to simply reinstall the apk if one is available, but I am interested in any suggestions people have.
Thanks!
If your not rooted then I'm not sure how a system app was uninstalled, did you double check your app drawer it could just be deleted from your homescreen

It didn't make sense to me either, but it is gone from the app drawer. I use the ContactsEX app and it can pull from the Contacts Storage, but when I attempt to add contacts, edit contacts, etc., the stock Contacts app does not appear.
A few minutes ago I did download from one of the forums here the stock Contacts apk. When I attempted to install the apk, installation failed because a file of that name already existed. Since that suggests that the original apk is there somewhere, would a hard/factory reset work to get the Contact app back?
go to system settings and apps. you want to view all. see if it lists contacts. if it is there then the third party conacts app may be the problem. make sure it is not set to be default app. maybe try clearing data for the app and reboot.

It wasn't in the system apps list. I uninstalled the third party contacts app, but then I had no way to get to my contacts or dialer. When I reinstalled the third party contacts app, I again had access to the existing contacts and could place calls. Still no way to access the stock contacts/dialer or edit existing contacts.
If a system reset would fix this, that's cool. I just don't want to do a reset and then still have the problem.
A factory reset should fix this, maybe consider rooting and flashing a rom

If I fix this, then my wife says she will take this phone and I can buy a Note II. Then I will root.
If that's the case then factory reset or Odin back to stock and get a note II man.
Simply rename the new contacts apk by adding a single number or letter to the end ...then it should install, and avoid the duplicate file failure ....
Or ....get a note 2.....that'll fix it ....LOL ...g
