[Q] TnT Lite 5.0 - Enabling Alternate Inputs - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello... I'm on TnT lite 5.0 and it works very well... I just have one minor issue. I cannot enable any other "keyboard" other than the ones that came with the ROM.
I tried installing several... Writepad, betther keyboard and thumb keyboard... All of them appear on Setting>Language & Keyboard but when you try to enable them, they give you the warning about privacy, you say ok and then don't enable. Any one else have this issue?
Thanks.

you will need a root explorer, it's on app market but not free.
From Root Explorer, open the /data/app/ folder and you will find the
keyboard you just installed. Then copy the apk file to /system/app, note
this is where you need the Root Explorer to change the permission for
/system folder from R/W to R/O (allowing permission to write in this folder
by user).
Do a restart once you finish copying the file. The new input method
should be enabled by default then.
Alternatively you can use "adb" tool from Android SDK to transfer the
apk file if you don't have a copy of Root Explorer.

There is a free version of Root Explorer out there. And it will get the job done.
Rev

Thanks
Thanks for your help guys... I will try that!

Is it possible to make one of the new keyboard options the default?

Once you have the keyboard on there and working, you can change the default keyboard input.
In TNT (Lite), I usually use the Search app - click and hold the text box, then click "Input Method".

Thanks!
Hey Guys, thanks a bunch for the help on getting this better keyboard working. I wanted to confirm that this method works in TNTlite v 4.4.0 as well.

What's the best file manager with root enabled? (possibly free )
Sent from my MB525
for me is file expert
File Expert does the job for me
I like Astro. It has all the usual tools of any file manager, and it remembers the settings of each folder like windows explorer in PC.
No root mode for both of them or do I need glasses?
Sent from my MB525
Ooops sorry FE doesn't have root access as yet.
You can probably manually give Astro root permissions, but it does not ask for them by itself. Instead, it just states 'insufficient permissions'.
I myself prefer Root Explorer. It's basic, but because of that, not cluttered with features I do not need in a file manager.
I've been using Super Manager.
The free version gives you root explorer capabilities, including R/W.
Some features are locked down unless you pay, such as the ability to directly open/edit files in the root explorer function but a quick'n'dirty workaround is to copy the file in question to the SD card, edit it to your hearts content and paste it back over the original.
Same as above - super manager seems ok

How do you do that? I've z4root installed.

I've just started using super manager as i needed to instal apps to the system/app file and couldn't do it with File Expert. Quite like SM now and it does what i need.
Root explorer is great! I use the paid version for all my tasks, but I will try super manager as it seems to have many followers!
i also use root explorer, try the free version, i went for the paid one. it's very easy too use
I have tried out a couple(ES, FE Astro) but I really like Super Manager after having used it.
The amount of options and tweaks and the free root access combined with a solid ui makes it an easy choice for me.
For those that dont know.
ES File Explorer (free) works just fine with root. Here is a trick. I just stumbled upon it while trying to mess with it.
Settings -> Home Directory
change home directory to be "\" instead of "\sdcard\"...
waaalaa, it's there....i was able to edit a file, didnt try saving it.
give it a shot and let us know..

If you tried saving it, you'd have seen ESFE pop up an error message. Its root capabilities only work on a couple of custom ROMs.
the best file manager is the ADB shell
but super manager is OK too.

Have you tried manually installing the apk by replacing vending.apk in /system/app?
If not, that should do it for you. Get the apk and put it on your SD card. Using Root Explorer: find the apk and copy it. Navigate to /system/app and mount as r/w (the button to do so is at the top). Long-press the current Vending.apk and rename it to anything (ie vending.bak), then paste the new one. Long-press the new one and rename it to Vending.apk (I'm not sure if capitalization matters, so capitalize it just in case) if it's named something else. Long-press again and select permissions from the list. Change the permissions to rw-r--r--, so the box looks like this:
Owner: x x o
Group: x o o
Other: x o o
Where x's are checked and o's are not. Then reboot.
You should now have the new market. If you don't, remove com.android.vending-1.apk from /data/app or go to settings > applications > manage applications > "all" tab, find Market and select "uninstall updates".
It you don't have Root Explorer, there are free file explorers available with root abilities. ES File Explorer should work, you may need to enable root privileges in the app's settings.
You have to be rooted (and possibly s-off) to be able to do this. If you aren't rooted, you can try uninstalling updates from the Market and hopefully that will trigger it to update to the latest version.

Can't Edit Files (Text Editor)

Hi all,
I can't edit the text files on my Mini...I have tried every idea and cannot edit a file...I'm trying to disable auto-brightness. On my old 2010 Mini the option comes up immediately - edit in text editor, but not in this one. How are you guys doing it?

What textfiles do you try to edit?
It could be a permission problem.
I use the text editor built in "ES File Explorer", I am very happy with it.
Sometimes I also use the terminal emulator and "vi".
Thanks for the tip, I'll give file explorer a go.
I am trying to edit hw_config.so
The flashtool in this area that people use allows you to edit a file in your phone and thankfully I did it. But as you know you need an app on your phone to do that too. Root explorer won't allow me. I've mounted, changed permissions to all types and no luck.

[Tutorial] Install Alt. Keyboards [Rooted NT 16gb][Works]

I started this thread to place a known working solution to installing Alternative keyboards in an OP as the OP to the original thread has chosen not to mod their OP to document the solution there. (A choice I completely accept as it is their OP.)
If a moderator finds this excessive do what you need to!
Hopefully this will alleviate some of the noob's initial confusion with keyboards.
What is this for:
Rooted Nook Tablets 16gb in size is proven to work.
Thanks to:
yaggermr - found the keyboard debug screen
robertely for getting this started.
CelticWebSolutions for the steps that work.
The steps:
Enable keyboard Debug mode.
Install an Alternate launcher and Root explorer
Install anycut: http://goo.gl/isvc1
Open Anycut, Create a New Shortcut.
Pick "Activity"
Pick "Android Keyboard Debug" (PROTIP: the list is larger than it looks, Scroll down!)
While you are there, create another shortcut for "Accessibility", and "Debug settings."
Return to your alternate launchers home screen and open "Android Keyboard Debug"
Enable Debug mode, and click Back. (Side note, you can stop here if you only want to change themes.)
From OP of the original thread.
This is where my method differed to op.
Install swype from market or use a downloaded apk.
It won't work yet.
In ES File Explorer navigate to /data/app
Copy the keyboard apk (swype one)
Navigate to a safe place such as your sdcard
Paste the apk
Navigate to /data/app
Copy the keyboard apk (swype one) again
Navigate to /system/app
Paste the apk
Change properties of system copy to all ticks
Reboot
Once rebooted select the keyboard with any cut shortcut to accessibility settings
(it may say something about you having no accessibility installed, you can install something form market here if you wish but you don't actually need to)[*]Keyboard will keep crashing which is OK it's nothing to worry about, it's just a bit annoying for a moment
In Es File Explorer navigate to the safe place you stored a copy of the swype apk
(not the original one in /data/app or the duplicated one in /system/app)
Click install to install it from the apk
It will inform you that it's going to overwrite existing copy
Click OK
Crashes will stop
Finally delete the copy from system/app
I (SCClockDr) believe this step prevents issues on subsequent re-boots.
All should work now.
I've (CelticWebSolutions) got Go keyboard, swype and a couple of others installed this way and all work
I've (SCClockDr) got Swype, Hacker, Swiftkey and a couple of others installed this way and all work
Good luck!
Note for noobs like me, restarting after adding and deleting files from SYSTEM/APP takes a few minutes, be patient
Edit: I deleted the copy from system/apps and started getting force closes again, going to do it again and leave the copy their.
Edit: Leaving the copy stopped the force closing.
Thanks for this - Using Thumb keyboard 4
Edit - GRRRRR restarted and force close started again!

NookColor Tools KFHD

There are some interesting settings that you can use in this application. Many of which are hidden, it worked on the origianl Kindle Fire, and I tryed to just use it to get keyboards fixed, and then I was messing with it. Just install apk, doesnt need to be in system/app
Not really sure if its any use besides a couple hidden settings. I ended up getting into the actual ICS settings menu, its interesting to mess around with this.

Lets you add keyboards
I was able to change keyboards with this app.
1.Download nookcolor tools (I found it in the xda forum, not in the market)
2.Download whatever keyboard you want
3. Open up root browser or whatever file explorer you have
4. Click on the apk file for the keyboard you want
5. Select the view option
6. Open the lib folder
The keyboard I downloaded (hacker keyboard) has 4 folders in lib folder
7.I selected the armeabi-v7a folder. Inside you'll find a something.so file (mine was libjni_pckeyboard.so)
8. Click on the .so file and select extract. Mine extracted it to /sdcard/extracted
9.I then copied the .so file from the /extracted folder, opened up the /system/lib folder, and pasted it
10. Move the keyboard apk file to the /system/app folder
11.Reboot the kindle fire and open up the nookcolor tools app
12. Click choose keyboard. Your downloaded keyboard should now be available as an option.
WALAA
I did this just to get a keyboard with a ctrl button. It should work with any keyboard app.
HOWEVER... in landscape mode you can only see like 95% of the keyboard. It works perfect in portrait mode though. Sorry for the long step list. All of these steps may not be necessary but this works. Keyboard will not be available until reboot. Will say updating or upgrading on startup.
Hah..12 steps!!
After every reboot , Swiftkey crashed and i must reinstall from the /system/app/ directory and must click Ok to overwrite an existed Systemapp. Then Swiftkey works perfectly. After a reboot Swiftkey crashed again.
can u help me?

It works on mine. Did u install from market? My launcher did this until I installed it from a non-market source. Try googling swiftkey apk and then follow the steps above. Also make sure you move the .so file.

I did this and installed perfect keyboard pro. It's pretty good, the "p" is hidden and the "0", ")" but are still accessible. They have a setting for landscape but couldn't get it to work.
