Hello,
i rooted my phone not too long ago and i love it!!!! i tried BAMF 3.0 and i didnt like it much at all, it was choppy but i got it to be smooth with changing the cpu, well as of now i am just rooted and my question is: what apps do u recommend(rooted) ? i got rom manager already ^^ and also, what is some roms outs their that u like? and why? im looking for a new ROM but dont know where to continue xD
and also, is there an app that hides all my apps on my screens? ive searched but no luck, kind of like in which on a computer we can view, or not view desktop icons
As far as apps; Titanium Backup will let you back up apps and data, RootExporer will let you access files you couldn't otherwise (be careful with both, you can delete or uninstall things you shouldn't), wifi tether will let you tether over wifi I recommend version 2.0.7 (google it), those are the biggies anyways. Check my sig for my ROM recommendation, links included. This setup has offered bulletproof stability for me and the best battery life I've seen. Of course phones and opinion vary so try a few and see what you like. As far as that last part, I have no idea.
Are you talking about temporarily hiding the widgets and icons, per permanently?
If temporarily, why not just set up a blank screen? Stock sense came with several desktops with a widget, or two. All you'd have to is remove some not by long pressing on them.

Ty both of u, definitely will check ur info!
And I don't want to delete them permanently, just not visible, I've searched and I can't find any at all, and yea deleting is always good, I've just always like hiding icons on my computer, and i'd like to also on my tb xD

if you mean hiding apps in the app drawer, I think you'll need a different launcher like LauncherPro or ADW. I don't know that there's any way to hide apps in the drawer of the sense launcher
OP, Das Bamf 3.0 is a great rom, but I don't like it either!
I have tried 6 roms on the TB and finally found the right one for me, which given your description sounds like it might be perfect for you as well.
Liquid Thunderbread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160637)
This is a VERY stripped down and fast rom. Also it is AOSP instead of Sense based and is only 66 mb!
It is awesomely fast and smooth without any of the BS, I seriously cannot recommend it enough. I like it so much that I made my first rom based donation to the developer and plan on doing so again if they continue updating.
Let me know what you think if you decide to give it a shot.
Im on synergy and i love it. its speedy quick but still lets you keep a lot of the fancy stuff. also the battery is great on 4g or 3g, wifi is a little lacking. and an app you should definitively download is setcpu ( i think its free if youve signed up for xda here) itll let you overclock or set up underlcoking for when your screen is off etc.
on my older incredible, i had an ad-block app (got it from the app market). it blocked the banner ads that are in a lot of the apps.
I have now had my Samsung Galaxy S2 for a few days and I already have a small list of things that is starting to annoy me >_<
1:
In the stock browser there is no settings for mobile or desktop so that you can actually choose to have the desktop feel rather then a crap mobile site
2:
When you download something, then the downloads under browser has no progress bar and only lists "In Progress". It might just be me but I actually like having a progress bar so I can see how far along each download is, and how fast the download is going at.
More to come later, but is there a solution to those 2 issues ?. Because going to about:debug with the browser does very little on the Samsung compared with other phones
for 1)
about:useragent if memory serves well, might be a bit different, it's somewhere posted in a thread here (IIRC there's also a thread to change it permanentely)
sorry, no idea for #2, I only download using a FTP client....
It is not phone related problem.

I had the same issue on my past LG and tried Dolphin as a possible solution. 1: It didn't fix the issue. 2: And it causes other "issues" at least for making me go back to stock.
What really ticks me off is the need and requirement to actually go out and find other apps to make the phones works as they "should". Stock browser etc should be sufficient for at least a lot of users, but most of the manufacturers mess that bit up. HTC at least can have as stock browser that works like it is supposed to >_<

i can suggest to use skyfire like default browser, so u can hit all the 2 problem here.
Have nice day
Using skyfire is not really a solution, since I want to prefebly keep the stock browser.
Ermm, isn't download progress shown we you pull down the status bar?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Yes it is, but:
1: It only shows total progress of ALL files presently downloaded and also does not show the speed of which it is happening.
2: Clicking that progress bar basically shows you all the downloading files and shows "in Progress".
What I am looking for is individual progress bars, inside the browser. Ie so I can see the individual progress of each file and how fast its downloading when I am inside the browser.
As it is I have no issue with the overall progress bar in the notification bar, my issue is when you are looking at the "downloads" inside the browser. The LGO2x shows individual progress bars and speeds. Whereas the SGS2 does not.
And I happen to prefer the LG way in that regard.
OKay, so this is my first android phone, coming from an Iphone 4 and let me tell you im about 80% disappointed.
Here are some problems im having, im hoping that you can help me turn that 80 into a 20.
1. Apps just randomly run in the background: I'll close all but my live background, my task manager and my alarm clock and go to sleep. When I wake up almost EVERY SINGLE app I have is running in the background. Why? How do I stop this, the Iphone never did this, I feel this is a hard fail on androids part.
2. Many apps force close while im trying to use them: Ive tried stock rom, and serenity 8, same apps same issues. Its becoming a turn off to use the phone for any apps.
3. Multitasking: Is there any? MOST of the time when I switch apps and "multitask" its just like having the app open at the start page, I dont have to reload the app but its not where I last left it like the Iphone. Even on web pages I find if I switch out of the web and go to another app if I return to the web im back at my home page and I have to go to my history just to get back where I was. Is there a way for me to fix this?
4: Ram usage: when I turn my phone off, then on I see 150 in the used ram. This number raises even with out opening any apps. I kill all apps and close all running programs I see nothing running except services and it raises as high as 600 mb with 0 apps open and nothing running except a live background and the task manager. My iphone never had a memory leak, how do I fix this? 600 mb to do nothing is a bit excessive.
As a software developer im really confused as how Google tricked everyone that android was good. Perhaps Im just uninformed and that is why I am here. I am wondering why there would be all these problems right out of the box on an item that is what 4th 5th generation? These are problems that shouldnt be as frequent in 1st and 2nd generations. Any help would be wonderful thank you.
1. this question has been asked a million times. In short, the Android OS handles memory much different than you'd expect. An app will appear as running after you close it but it may not be. Android just keeps that memory allocated to that app in case you need to use it again. But if the OS needs that memory for something else, it will release it from that app and use it for something else.
2. what apps FC on you?
3. i'll leave this for someone else to explain because I dont use the browser much so I dont have much experience with that.
4. this goes along with my answer for #1. Android OS likes to have its memory allocated but it doesnt mean those apps are running.
I might be a little off on my explanation so I'll leave it to the experts to clarify but i'm pretty sure i'm fairly accurate.
1/4 - Not deficiencies, Android is designed that way. If an app is resident in memory, it is more readily accessible. Some badly written apps DO more than just sit there in the task list - but most are OK. Sitting in memory is not bad - holding a wakelock or showing up in your battery usage is.
2 - No clue - not having this problem here. I haven't seen an FC in a few weeks, and the last one was my own fault. What apps?
3) This depends on the app. However, usually the browser returns to wherever I last was when I use it. In fact I wish it were easier to "go home"...
3) Matter of using the right button. Close the app with the home button, and restart it where it left off. Back out of the app with the back button, and start over.
List off apps that FC on me Both stock and Serenity 8:
Alarm Clock Plus
Chase
email
Gmail
hootsuite
maps
market
netflix
qik
web
Also no matter how I work the web 60% of the time I start back at my home page.
Lastly to do anything on android it seems like a process, just to switch from one app to another I have to do this, then that, then this, now im on my other app... Iphones multitasking is button click im there. Is there a multitasking app that works kinda like iphones? I really like the tray that holds ALL my open apps. Im trying hard to like this phone and android but being able to customize and have widgets just does not seem like it is worth it. Unless there are some really big secrets im missing.
Thank you all for the answers as well!
i really dont know what to tell you about the FC's because none of those FC on me ... whether I was stock or not. That just doesnt sound right. If you're stock, it shouldn't be FC'ing at all. I can understand if you're rooted and running S8 or some other ROM. Maybe something happened during the flash but stock should be fine.
I'm also trying out the browser on my phone and if I load a random website, go home, open another app and go back to the browser, its still on the last page I viewed.

If you're swithing from app to app, and want to do it more quickly, hold the home button for a few seconds (pretty much anywhere, no need to go 'home' first). It will open up a list of the last 6 apps you've used. Pretty sure from the point you left off.
holding the home button does work pretty well, although sometimes it does not have the last couple apps I was using, mainly Go SMS pro. I am currently running S8 thought it was stable, guess i'll reflash and give this another go for a week, if not then its return to the IP and trade this back for the 4s. Thanks for the help!
Any suggestion on what rom to flash to?
Having THAT many apps FC on you is usually a sign that you did one of two things:
1) Forgot to wipe data/factory reset when installing a new ROM
2) Performed an improper Titanium Backup restore - restoring more than just "MISSING apps and data"

I'm running Serendipity 8.1 and do not have any problems with these apps from your list. You may need to re-flash.

any of them are good but I personally use UnNamed. You really should wipe your phone first. Thats probably why you have so many FC's. When you flash a new rom, make sure you do NOT restore system apps via Titanium Backup (if thats what you use).

To switch between running apps all you have to do is long press the home button - one press to see the last six open apps and your there.
Having the browser return to the home page every time just means you don't know what you are doing.
Being concerned about what is being held in ram its also a sign you don't know what you are doing. The memory chip where the ram resides, where you see a list of apps being held has to remain powered on all the time. Whether it is holding 250 MB of data, 500 MB of data or just 10 MB of data it will still be drawing the same amount of power. And just because an apps data is being held in ram does not necessarily mean it is running. Top see what us running you need to check cpu usage.
The only time to concerned about ram is if more than 85% is being used then you would start having problems. But this does not happen on our phones, and only would happen if you had something causing a major memory leak.
All of your force closes are related to you or your particular phone. I have maybe five fc's in a month and three of those happened while I was running cm7.

Lot of user error here. I'm on the stock ROM with root.
Switch apps quickly by holding home.
If you use the back button to exit an app then you truly are exiting the app. Use home if you want it to start running.
Don't worry about ram usage. This device has 1GB and Android manages it very well without you ever having to worry.
I never have force closes unless it's the developers issue. If you're running from backed up apps then you can expect to have FCs. Install from fresh if you try a new ROM.

I think the main reason the op is having his browser reset most of the time is because the op is using some kind if task killer. This task killer is also probably the cause of a significant portion of the fc's being experienced.
There should be a forum rule against people who run task killers then complain about fc's, laggy apps, and problems with multitasking.
I mean it should be obvious running a "task killer" on a device designed specifically to multitask - it is so silly. Look at the two phrases side by side "task killer" "multitasking device" - can you see what I mean.

Just because you don't know how to use a device does not make the device a general fail. Let's put the blame where it belongs, on the guy who has no understanding on what is going on with the processes in the device and drawing conclusions on based on an obviously ignorant perception those observations.

Samsung has a tips and tricks page specifically for the AT&T GS2 that may show you some things you didn't know. One thing I didn't know was that you can take a screenshot with stock by pressing the power button and the home button at the same time. I also didn't know you can access the clipboard to show everything you "copied" from text fields.

As far as the OP's issues, I have all of those apps except for chase and hootsuite installed on stock and I don't FC at all. For the browser concerns, you may just be opening a new window each time you run the browser from the app icon. Try zooming all the way out of the page and then pinch to zoom out once more and it will show you the windows you have open, or you can press the menu key and select windows. The icon for "windows" in the menu will have a number on it if you have more than one open.

Hi,
I did the root from InDirect, everything's fine, had the OTA update from B&N come down so spent another chunk of time watching the video on how to redo everything and block the sucker to get old device manager. So in theory I'm good to go. P.S. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'd bake you guys some cookies (well buy some, I'm not a domestic goddess) if I could. I'm a rooting noob and know how much I owe to you guys.
A few things have popped up and there seems to be a bunch of threads but none that help in a clear cut way that my kinda newbie brain understands (or maybe my sleep deprived brain is gaining on me). If you all don't mind pointing me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.
Problem 1: Google frameworks process error causing a force close window on start up. Yep, I know there are a bunch of threads for this but what do I actually need to do? Replace something? I saw mention of some files (which are in their respective folder).
Problem 2: I kind of like the stock keyboard and would either like it back or something similar. Is there a keyboard you all recommend?
Problem 3: When I go into setting > keyboard the darn thing throws a force close error (com.android.settings). I know people have been getting the same thing and it fixed itself with the darn OTA update but I killed that and now I'm back to square one with the keyboard setting issue - namely I can't set anything.
Problem 4: I have a few google calendars in my google account and on the calendar app I only see one color tag when I view the calendar but when I go to the agenda view on the calendar app I see my other different color coded calendar listings. Why the heck can't I see it in a normal 31 day calendar view with all my calendar color tags?
Question: How can I tell if I have access to all the storage on the device which rooting gives me and which app is the best way to utilize it?
Question: Is there some kind of task killer for running apps on my rooted tablet or should I leave it alone?
Question: How do I "thank" someone for their post?
I promise I've been poking around and I'm not some super lazy a-hole who doesn't want to try and look for things. I was part computer science in college (a combo of computer science and art) so I'm not a complete programming moron though this is the first gadget I've bought and tinkered with.
Basically I'd like to know if I can fix these issues instead of rooting for the millionth time when I inadvertently really mess things up.
Thanks dudes!
Dawn
1. ignore for now
2. recommend swiftkey or swype
3. use the hidden settings app and choose accessibility
4. try third party contacts app like go contacts
5. go to calender app, hit menu button, more, calender and check to see all your calenders are there and if not, add them
a. root access allows you to transfer files to b&n partition
b. i dont use task killers
c. thanks button below if you are using a browser
i can has cookies?
I too was getting the force close message when trying to access my keyboard settings after rooting using Indirect's method. I absolutely hated the autocomplete on the new keyboard and wanted to turn it off, but I just couldn't get to the keyboard settings at first (even with the hidden settings app--it still force closed). A couple of days ago, I installed the Anycut app to help with another problem, and while using it to create a shortcut for an activity, I scrolled past "android keyboard settings" in the list of choices. Once I created a shortcut for android keyboard settings, I was able to go in and change things to suit me (adios annoying autocomplete!). I don't know if this will help with any of your problems, but you did mention you were having trouble accessing your keyboard settings...good luck!
most keyboards have a button to access their settings. you just gotta find it.
On the gingerbread keyboard in the root method to change settings:
- long press on the , and then slide up/over to the settings icon that pops up. This should bring up a menu to make keyboard changes.
- you will find that a number of the keys have long-press options.
~ G
Thanks for the tips. Much simpler than my accidental Anycut fix! Wish I had known earlier--I spent hours fiddling with everything but the simplest fix on Xmas day!
Hey there, was trying out the multitasking on the phone and am experiencing RAM shortage? 2GB would have been great, but as I had the GSII I know that there is a lot more capability with 1GB..
On my GSII I could run more apps in the background than now. With the GSIII I can only have 3 apps working at the same time?! Everything keeps refreshing.. the browser, the launcher etc. Even the music stops sometimes while multitasking...
Anyone facing the same issue?

Apart from the odd occassional main home screen refresh now and again, nothing out of the ordinary for me.
Stock ROM, but running a themed screen and icons with Go Launcher.
Might be worth looking at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1634624
Some useful hints and tips on closing/removing apps. I personally just disabled them, made the mistake of removing some core ones from my GNex and made a right royal mess.
Good luck, let us know how you get on. :good:
Thank you for the useful thread you posted, but I didn't have to remove bloatware on my gsII to multitask? Even though I did remove it after a while it still worked before doing anything. I just can't imagine Samsung will ship a phone, where you have to remove apps to multitask properly?
So you can run more than 4 apps in the task manager?
Sad we in Europe didn't get the choice like in the U.S.between the two versions. As I feel the RAM would have been more future proof..
But putting this aside, I'm really impressed what they have packed into the touchwiz out of the box ! I don't even feel like rooting and flashing, because everything is running just fine.
As I know myself I'll find myself fondling around pretty soon, because Iknow the potential of xda
Just am facing this issue, which is really bugging me atm.

I've got about 10 apps so far showing when I press the task manager button, no signs of lag so far for me.
Memory usage for me is 644Mb out of 779Mb.
Can't think of anything preventing you from opening more than 4 apps on the go.
No that thing you are seeing is the recent apps menu! That is just a chronology of what you opened recently and is no real time multitasking! In that menu you have to press "task-manager". There you'll see the apps which are truly running
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA
Yeah, I did say I pressed the Task Manager button, maybe I should'be been more clear on what I pressed and where it took me.
Anyways, I've attached a picture to clarify that I had at least 10 apps running.
You didn't tweak around the Developer options have you by any chance? Near the end of the list there is a section that says Limit background processes, mine has Standard limit, if clicked, options include No background processes, 1,2,3,4 processes at most.
If it's not that, then I'm out of ideas.
I don't own the sg3 (plan on buying one soon), but I know that in ICS there is an option in settings under developer options where you can set the number of apps allowed to run in the background.
Worth a shot.
Gold luck.

That happens when your phone runs out of memory, are you sure you're not running too many background apps?
Browsers are huge memory hogs, so it's not really surprising when you run 2 at the same time, but it all depends on the amount of open tabs and the webpages within.
The same "issue" appears on S2 (Stock an CM9) and with somewhat heavier usage on the Note.

Now I can open more apps simultaneously, but around after a minute everything closes down. They don't stay on they just close after a while..
I don't know what the reason is, but could you check and open a few apps? Then just look after a minute or so if they close down .
