Just watched a YouTube demo and the guy mentioned pulling the SIM card being the only way to turn off LTE/4G. I know there have been many questions posed and didn't see this mentioned so figured I'd put it out there.

I feel like I just have to ask... why would you want to turn off 4G? if you have no 4G in your service area, the phone already automatically switch down to 3G

To minimize battery drain when you're not needing/using data? I guess you could leech wifi as often as possible too but know many people have asked about disabling 4G, I can only assume its power consumption related.
Don't pull out the SIM card. What happen if you loose it? You'll be ended up by paying additional charge for replacing new sim card.
The good way to disable 4G is just type:
*#*#4636#*#* when you want to make call.
Then, scroll down until you see the word says "CDMA + LTE/EvDo".
Click that and change it to "CDMA PRL Auto".
If you want to use 4G, just do the steps above, and instead of "CDMA PRL Auto", change it to "CDMA + LTE/EvDo" (you can also change to "LTE mode" if you want 4G only).
Hopefully, it will help you

You can "automate" this is a way by downloading an app called "Phone Info" by [email protected] It allows you to enable/disable 4G. Basically does exactly what dialing would do but is faster and easier.

Thanks for the link. My app drawer's cluttered enough with apps, though; maybe after we get root and can remove all the bloat/crap-ware.
I usually just add a contact with all the dialer codes so I don't have to memorize them. I'm in a 4G area, so don't really see the need for this personally, but nice to know the trick anyways.

I used to have the same issue with a cluttered app drawer (I'd uninstall apps I used occasionally just to shrink my app drawer). I started using ADW Launcher EX a while back and it lets you make different app drawer versions. Basically you can choose which apps show up in the app drawer, so you can hide all the bloatware icons and leave the apps you use all the time. Then when you want one of your rarely used apps, just switch to the "ALL" app drawer and it will show every app installed on your phone. Just a suggestion, I found it to be really helpful.

That's an excellent tip! Thanks. I'm actually a licensed paid for version of ADW Ex, but haven't used it in a while, preferring the look and feel of Launcher Pro instead. Might be time to check out ADW again...

So, what's the way to use Thunderbolt in overseas CDMA networks that doesn't offer 4G LTE service.
Is manual PRL programming (mean ##DIAG mode) or R-UIM card possible solution for this problem?
If you use LauncherPro you can create an Activity to go directly to the phoneinfo screen. I use this all the time to turn off 3G on my Droid1 when I'm at work thanks to no 3g at all.
Long press the home screen, add shortcut, then Activities. Select Settings and scroll down for what seems for ever until you see Phone info and select it.

hi all,
just recently bought a hero and sorry for the noob questions. any help will be greatly appreciated.
1.) How do i activate the green notification light for any new notifications? so far i can only use the trackball to flash for a number of minutes and thats it.
2.) how can i permanently use 3g as a signal without switching back to edge? i prefer 3g because it is faster, but when i use the web, it reverts to edge making it slower when browsing. i want it never to switch back to edge just 3g.
3.) How do you update radio and rom? is it the same with winmo? i have a topaz and im currently using hero.
Thanks for any feedback!
So far the only answer i found was the notification light as a bug or a defect. line switching is still unsolved and updating.

1) It works as it is stated in the user's manual. How can you state that it is a bug or defect? Funny... Just because it works that way on Magic or G1 does not mean that it has to be the same on Hero.
2) You cannot as your phone will automatically switch between them when one another is not available. You phone will select 3G only if it is available around where you are. If it switches to Edge/GPRS/whatever, that means you don't have 3G signals around you.
3) There are 1.000 posts on the forum here regarding updating ROM, etc. Search is our best friend.

You can force HSDPA, but you do so at your own risk!
You need to download AnyCut from the Market and create new shortcut to the activity "Phone Info". From this short cut, you access a screen which gives lots of diagnostic info about the phones state and there is an option to "Set preferred network type". By default this is "WCDMA Preferred", but if you want to force to always use HSDPA you should select "WCDMA Only".
Note if you do this, your phone will never drop back to 2G, even if a 2G signal is available and a 3G one isn't.
I wouldn't advise playing around with any of the other options in this screen unless you know what you are doing!
Regards,
Dave

I don't have an answer to the original question, but thought I'd point out that in addition to locking the phone, you may want to lock your "SIM." Doing so prevents someone from using your SIM in another phone and running up your bill.
I believe the default SIM PIN1 is 1111 for all VZW SIMs.

I thought that each LTE sim is registered to the MEID of your Thunderbolt and is unable to be used in others. (without extensive EPST work) Hence the reason people were getting brand new TB's also had to get brand new SIM cards?

You didn't read the material Verizon provided with your phone, did you? Right there on the front of the Activation Guide: "To learn more about your 4G LTE SIM card, visit verizonwireless.com/4GSIM" Poke around, and you'll find this:
the SIM card is portable and can be used in any Verizon Wireless-certified 4G device. All usage will be billed to the account associated with the 4G SIM card.

Ahhhh, so i am actually supposed to read those pages with words on them? I thought it was just packing material.
I've honestly never read one phone manual i've ever had. Not cause I know everything about a phone before I get it, but I just rather find out everything myself. If i had to get a replacement shipped to me I'm sure I would have found that out then.
But also, I don't know if you saw some other threads or not, but i remember people saying they went in and got replacements and had to get a new SIM also. They said the VZW reps had said that the SIM is not transferrable. I don't know for sure, just saying what was said.

If you set it to lock phone immediately, it will lock when you press the power button fast. The screen will turn off and the phone locks. When you press the power button next, the screen turns on and you need to swipe to unlock screen. You then enter password to unlock phone.
I have done it this way and it works fine. Hitting the power button once fast is the same as if you had an icon for it. The nice part is you can be on any screen.
just use the app i posted and if you need a password set it up in settings in security and viola just what your asking for software app to lock and password on unlock
also here is the patch to make the volume rocker wake the device also so then you could wake the phone with volume button and power buttton

I'm new to this phone coming from the (facetiously said) jailbroken "God Phone" 3g. I had the option in that phone to switch from 3g to EDGE with a softswitch via SBSettings. I used this quite frequently as 3g coverage in my house is 1 bar and dropped calls. Is there a way to manually switch the Atrix to the EDGE network. I can't figure out the way to do that on this phone. I'm running 1.8.3 jail...errr...rooted with Gingerblur (if any of that makes a difference). I've done searched but I'm not doing it properly I guess so I'm finally asking. Thanx much

Seems ATT and Motorola don't want us doing that because it's disabled. Every other android I've had has had this ability. And it really annoys me because 3g sucks at my home and office.
I spent an hour on the phone with ATT over this. All I accomplished was wasting my time.
you can unlock that option, go to system\etc\motorola\com.android.phone
open the defaults.xml and change the
<boolean value="false" name="network_select_menu"/> from false to true.
reboot device
you should be able to manually change 2/3g than. I have it working on my att atrix with gingerblur 3.1, however im not on an att network, it still should work for you tho

this didn't work for me until I deleted the backup files created by root explorer though. For some reason it was defaulting back to the original files. After I deleted the .bak files (in the data folder) it worked.
It doesn't seem to make a difference I've noticed. (Keep in mind I'm new at this) but I'm pretty sure my icon should change from H to E when I switch to the 2g network (options in network select are 2g, 3g and auto) Am I thinking correctly here? Or does Gingerblur override the icon?

Have a unlocked Rezound that I'd like to use as a media device.
Why? Because the device continues to work well. I have a spare battery and chargers, holster and case. It can do wireless (802.11). Plus memory space as well as SD card capabilities.
I think if it was possible to disable the cell modem within the phone, battery life would be increased. Would love to find a ROM that minimizes the bloatware, allows you to disable the cell portion of the phone but maintain the device's other functionality.

As Pmania said, toggle Airplane Mode first and then toggle WiFi back on by itself. I do this myself.
You can also access the Phone Info hidden settings on some ROMs by punching in "*#*#4636#*#*" on the stock dialer.
This panel controls global radio settings and can toggle the cell radio on or off independent of Airplane Mode. Do be careful not to select anything you're unsure of like changing regional frequencies.

To be fair, the grammar and lack of uppercase letters in the first post did not make it 100% clear you meant a specific app title rather than a generic toggle just for the LTE band. Mjones and likely others misunderstand at a glance.
I'm guessing the app is "LTE OnOFF - HTC Thunderbolt" by Cunning Logic. This app accesses that same hidden Phone Info panel accessed by the code I previously mentioned. Would recommend for the OP if the Airplane Mode trick is not preferable and the dialer code doesn't work on their particular ROM.
Other useful apps like Battery Monitor Widget can access the hidden settings too (BMW does it under the main menu > Tests button > Phone Information)

That doesn't turn off the cell radio, just LTE...

Actually it does.
I'll be trying this. Will back phone up just in case I ever have to press back into service but I see an S4 in my near future...
I second the *#*#4636#*#* method. There is a button in there to do exactly what you want.

Now I have 4g now in my neighborhood and now my battery is draining faster. I shut it down lte in settings, but is there a widget I can use so I don't that to go through a bunch of menu steps to turn it on and off?
You can use "Power Toggles" from the Play Store. :good:
The power toggle that's built into every ROM for the EVO LTE. Its in the widgets section and just press the data icon.

That one shuts down all data and not just 4g but 3g also. It's not a big deal I can shut down lte and just use 4g when I need to stream or download a big file. I just need to shut down 4g, but thank you.

I think the best way is to simply go to settings > mobile data > and change the network mode from LTE/CDMA to CDMA only...or turn on ur WiFi and that will help battery life too, cuz I think it like puts the data antenna in like a standy mode to conserve battery.
I haven't noticed any more significant battery drain while on 4g, I believe our phone uses the same antenna for both 3g and 4g. But I could see it possibly draining battery if it is constantly acquiring an LTE signal then losing it shortly there after, repeatidly over and over...
Someone correct if I'm wrong about anything...

I think you're right. I don't need 4g 99% of the time. I think even when on 4g it uses more than 3g, but maybe it's like you're saying. I did fully charge my phone then went to sleep. The next day phone lost 40% charge only difference was 4g on. I'm going to try 3g tonight, then wifi, then 4g again and see and let everyone know.
Edit: so far most posts accept 4g uses more power. Maybe needed to run lte versus just cdma uses more power so it's not the 4g of it, but more needing to run an extra system. 3g works fine with just cdma on so that's probably why.

Sounds like a good experiment, also when testing WiFi remember some roms allow the phone to disable WiFi after a time of inactivity, should disable that when you test it...try to even the playing field. Even though Ive read WiFi uses less battery that using data...

If a better solution doesn't show up in this thread, you could definitely pull this off with Tasker.

Do you mean the task manager. I didn't any apps running that I can stop that would affect anything but I guess apps use data too. I want to do what was mentioned earlier and keep it as level and the same as possible. I'm not so much concerned with the wifi as comparing 3g and 4g.

I don't think Tasker can do this with 4g LTE.

It most certainly can. It's not the perfect solution, but it can definitely do it.

How would you set up that task? You can set up tasks that affect 2g/3g and wimax, but I haven't seen anything for LTE. In fact, I'm almost positive he addressed this on his site, saying it wasn't possible (yet). Did I miss an update?

For Sense ROMs, set up a widget on your homescreen and point it to a task like below (the steps may need a tweak or two to work correctly as I'm not reading the steps directly from a task)
Also create a variable named Data4g (or whatever you want) and set it to ON
If %Data4g is ON
Mobile Data Settings
DPad down (4 times)
DPad press
Dpad down
Dpad press
Variable set %Data4g OFF
Button back
else
Mobile Data Settings
DPad down (4 times)
DPad press
Dpad up
Dpad press
Variable set %Data4g ON
Button back
For AOSP/CM ROMS I think there's an option in the Secure Settings add-on that can toggle 4G, but I've never used an AOSP or CM ROM yet.

Dpad settings - mind blown. Never saw those before. I was looking for a much simpler setting, like the one that's there for wimax. That does seem like a roundabout way of doing it but it'll work all right.

Edit - you can access that setting easily through quick settings on the notification bar in Viper rom, btw.
Yeah, the dpad stuff is pretty cool. There's an LTE toggle in Secure Settings too (separate from wimax) so you could trigger it with a Tasker action through the plugin. Can't test it though because I don't have LTE at my house.
EDIT: sorry just noticed louched already posted this.

I know you can make a settings widget directly through sense and probably any aosp rom. Just direct it to the settings page you want it to open, I used to have one that opened the bluetooth settings to quickly change my audio devices. I just wish there was a better way to force entry into 4G. I'm tired of restarting my damn phone cause the airplane mode bs almost never works for me.
just an idea

Same here. My girls s3 picks it up everywhere. Mine only does in certain areas. My girl gets it at our house and has full signal and i can barely make a phone call let alone get any data. Thats the only reason im considering the note 3 is its radios.
