I'm new to this phone coming from the (facetiously said) jailbroken "God Phone" 3g. I had the option in that phone to switch from 3g to EDGE with a softswitch via SBSettings. I used this quite frequently as 3g coverage in my house is 1 bar and dropped calls. Is there a way to manually switch the Atrix to the EDGE network. I can't figure out the way to do that on this phone. I'm running 1.8.3 jail...errr...rooted with Gingerblur (if any of that makes a difference). I've done searched but I'm not doing it properly I guess so I'm finally asking. Thanx much

Seems ATT and Motorola don't want us doing that because it's disabled. Every other android I've had has had this ability. And it really annoys me because 3g sucks at my home and office.
I spent an hour on the phone with ATT over this. All I accomplished was wasting my time.
you can unlock that option, go to system\etc\motorola\com.android.phone
open the defaults.xml and change the
<boolean value="false" name="network_select_menu"/> from false to true.
reboot device
you should be able to manually change 2/3g than. I have it working on my att atrix with gingerblur 3.1, however im not on an att network, it still should work for you tho

Interesting. I made the change and rebooted but that menu is still greyed out. So I looked at defaults.xml again thinking it changed it back, but its still set to true. Hrmm..
Try clearing dalvik cache and rebooting.

Has anyone else tried this on att software?

Had to change in a few other places as well. the data/data/phone.xxx.whatever it was also. Changed all three files in there to say tru to the value but they kept changing back. /data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs/_has_set_default_values.xml
/system/etc/motorola/com.android.phone/defaults.xml
Besides those two, which was the third? I've done those two, wiped dalvik and no luck.
I'm understanding that the defaults.xml in /system/etc only applies to a reset perhaps..
yeah what's the 3rd one??
sorry for the late reply
in my data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs folder I have 3 files
_has_set_default_values.xml
com.android.phone_preferencex.xml and
settings.xml
changed network select menu to "true" on all of them.
also did it under /system/etc/motorola/com.android.phone
defaults.xml
this didn't work for me until I deleted the backup files created by root explorer though. For some reason it was defaulting back to the original files. After I deleted the .bak files (in the data folder) it worked.
It doesn't seem to make a difference I've noticed. (Keep in mind I'm new at this) but I'm pretty sure my icon should change from H to E when I switch to the 2g network (options in network select are 2g, 3g and auto) Am I thinking correctly here? Or does Gingerblur override the icon?

FWIW, I believe /system/etc/motorola/com.android.phone/defaults.xml only takes effect with a factory reset. So changing this might not necessarily be needed..

I'm noticing this too without Gingerblur. Setting it to 2G only doesnt seem to change anything. I still show H, and I'm still getting H speeds. :/ I wonder if that setting doesn't make any difference so thats why it was disabled?

I feel like I just have to ask... why would you want to turn off 4G? if you have no 4G in your service area, the phone already automatically switch down to 3G

To minimize battery drain when you're not needing/using data? I guess you could leech wifi as often as possible too but know many people have asked about disabling 4G, I can only assume its power consumption related.
Don't pull out the SIM card. What happen if you loose it? You'll be ended up by paying additional charge for replacing new sim card.
The good way to disable 4G is just type:
*#*#4636#*#* when you want to make call.
Then, scroll down until you see the word says "CDMA + LTE/EvDo".
Click that and change it to "CDMA PRL Auto".
If you want to use 4G, just do the steps above, and instead of "CDMA PRL Auto", change it to "CDMA + LTE/EvDo" (you can also change to "LTE mode" if you want 4G only).
Hopefully, it will help you

You can "automate" this is a way by downloading an app called "Phone Info" by [email protected] It allows you to enable/disable 4G. Basically does exactly what dialing would do but is faster and easier.

Thanks for the link. My app drawer's cluttered enough with apps, though; maybe after we get root and can remove all the bloat/crap-ware.
I usually just add a contact with all the dialer codes so I don't have to memorize them. I'm in a 4G area, so don't really see the need for this personally, but nice to know the trick anyways.

I used to have the same issue with a cluttered app drawer (I'd uninstall apps I used occasionally just to shrink my app drawer). I started using ADW Launcher EX a while back and it lets you make different app drawer versions. Basically you can choose which apps show up in the app drawer, so you can hide all the bloatware icons and leave the apps you use all the time. Then when you want one of your rarely used apps, just switch to the "ALL" app drawer and it will show every app installed on your phone. Just a suggestion, I found it to be really helpful.

So, what's the way to use Thunderbolt in overseas CDMA networks that doesn't offer 4G LTE service.
Is manual PRL programming (mean ##DIAG mode) or R-UIM card possible solution for this problem?
If you use LauncherPro you can create an Activity to go directly to the phoneinfo screen. I use this all the time to turn off 3G on my Droid1 when I'm at work thanks to no 3g at all.

I just switched from a rooted One XL that was running Scott's CleanRom 4.5DE to a new One X+ that I've unlocked and rooted.
One of the features I miss the most is the ability to force the phone into 3G for most of my use with the ability to turn on 4G when I am watching video or something that requires more data.
Is there an app that works well at switching back and forth easily? I did a search in the play store and there are a couple in there but they seemed to be geared for phones that are CDMA/LTE rather than H+/LTE.
Thanks!!!

Seems no matter which I pick it just resets to the standard option.
If I turn the radio off first I can set whatever I want, but, upon turning back one I still get 'LTE' even if it isn't the selected network type.
EDIT: I see I have the same problem as 'moregadget' in that no matter what I do it just seems to go back to its default settings. It must be some BS AT&T did to prevent us from opting out of the battery sucking LTE connection.
I am on an unlocked bootloader & rooted on the Elegancia 3.1.0 AT&T rom.

So I was loading the Team Venom ViperXL+ 1.2.0 ROM yesterday and had a moment where I felt like an idiot. As I was selecting the items on the ROM that I wanted to load I ran across the area where I select what 3G/4G icons I want and I suddenly realized something I haven't seen on the One X+ forum but was prevalent on the original One X.
When you have the AT&T 4G icons in use you can't manually select the network however when you load a ROM that allows you to use the typical H+/3G icons that I believe are on the international version you can.

I have the LTE button ON and I am wondering if I am still getting 4G because I have LTE on and it's just showing 3G. But I don't think that's the case.

My personal experience, living in a fringe signal area, is that AOSP roms just don't have as strong a signal as TW roms (it presumably has to do with how the RIL had to be hacked/reverse-engineered to work for AOSP). I would prefer running AOSP, but unfortunately in my experience on my S3 and Note2, where I am located on the fringe of full 4G coverage areas, I have the same issues as you: on TW, full, fast, 4G; on AOSP, very obviously slow 3G or 1X.
Edit to say I've only tried 4.2.2 ROMs, haven't tried the 4.3 ones yet, so if I'm handing out wrong/outdated info, I'd love to be corrected.
I am now running a stock 4.1.2 ROM and still cannot get 4G. I now for some reason can't even dial *#*#4636#*#*. When I try it just says "Welcome to Verizon Wireless, this call cannot be completed as dialed." Anyway to get that number to work so I can check my networks again?

Try going into settings and factory reset phone now. If that doesnt work, reboot into stock recovery and factory reset from there and reboot. That seems to restore signal for those of us that got stuck in roaming mode from the Carbon thread. Might help your problem too
So I decided to re-flash CyanogenMod 10.1, adjusted the APN settings again, and I have 2 bars of 4G right now. Usually 4G will flash a couple times and change to 3G, but it is staying 4G, so hopefully it stays that way!
Well it stayed 4G for a bit until I turned WiFi on. The moment I turned it on, my 4G went to 3G. I turned WiFi off and I still have 3G. Anyone know what would cause this?
EDIT: My network type shows eHRPD with 3G, where as when I had 4G (before I turned my WiFi on) it showed LTE. If this helps any.

I've had that problem before. .I used a mod like this.
This mod is from DroidXcon, Try this and hopefully it will work. (make a backup of your buld.prop first)
Instructions:
1)Go to market install BuildProp Editor
2)Once installed find and open Build Prop Editor
3)Hit the menu button and select Edit
4)Scroll to the bottom of screen and add the following lines
Code:
ril.sales_code=LOL
ro.csc.sales_code=LOL
5)Hit the save button at the top right hand corner of the screen(looks like a disk)
6)Once this is done saving restart the phone
7)After restarting go to Settings>More Settings>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names>Menu Button>+ New APN
8)Add desired carriers APN info, when finished hit menu button and save
9)Power down and change to your desired SIM card if you hadn't already done so
10)Power back on and go to Settings>More Settings>Mobile Networks> Access Point Names (if done properly you should see the APN data you entered for your respective carrier).
11)Select the respective APN listing and then you should have working data

I tried this but having the same problem, so I decided to save the APN each time I edited an item, and every time I would change the MNC and save, it would not be on my APN list, and it would be blank again.
Bump... also having this issue. Trying CM 10.2 for the first time since August. It had Bluetooth issues back then, so I've been running Bean's ROM until yesterday. Can't get 4G serivce in what is absolutely a saturated 4G area...
Was able to fix the issue by wiping the phone completely (including internal storage!), installing Bean's ROM, doing a factory reset, then coming back.
FWIW I always wipe internal storage when going back and forth between 4.1 and 4.2+ roms, seems to alleviate any SD card issues that can arise from the changes to filesystem in 4.2.
Sorry guys, thought we had one of these already.
Just curious about the V_2.3.1? Mostly the reception, but....
Is the Reception any better - mainly for those that have lousy reception to start with.
Are you having any issues?
I haven't heard anything yet so let me know :good:
I have decent reception at my house but I think the beta added a bar to it (from 3 to 4). Definitely better at my son's school. I was only getting 3g there but now get LTE. The big test will be at work but I'm on vacation and don't go back until next week.
I was so amazed that I actually noticed a better internet connection I never looked at my signal bars there is an extra bar or two in my house, which I swear I only had one if that all the time one thing is that I'm not sure if it is the ROM or me but shutdownani is really choppy, every since 2.2 but I try modules sometimes that make my phone unstable like xprivacy& cool tool which I immediately remove but deff noticed improved signals, like I actually see the difference
Updated to 2.3.1 to check apn, I checked apn setting. They didn't change, so I selected reset to default. Then I lost internet and apn kept selecting VM. On reboot phone app fc. Had to revert apn.config and do ##scrtn

Did you use the ,DUN METHOD via master shortcut lite, hidden menu #2 4th on list, internet•, launch
Here is a screen shot. If I hit reset it will fill in the new apn added by 2.3.1 then my internet stops, and on restart phone app fc,

You don't create a new one. You edit the top two. Just tap them and
add ,dun to the APN.

Yes, I already did that edit. 4 me in a specific area the 4G is slower than the 3G. I wanted to try different apns. But those APN would not connect for Sprint at all
What is the intended effect of that file? Sprint has its own APN on a profile update
Works Well for me, definitely see improvement with Switching from 3g to LTE. I also find an LTE signal much quicker. I work in NYC, before the 2.3.1 update I would struggle to get an LTE signal once I left Penn station, now As soon as I walk out it grabs a signal. engine95 you are the Man Bro.
@engine95
I think the apn.config has bad settings for Sprint OTA, I've edited going to test, should be able to activate phone with the edits.

I'm not sure what you were trying to do prior to the above.
If you're talking the apn in the beta, It seems to work better for all of us.
If you're talking about modifying that apn for hotspot, it works also.

The original, and the beta do the update profile/prl as they should. And "Activate device" is the telltale.
But, you can't use the beta on a fresh install. Meaning on a full ROM. It'll only work as an update.
Remind me again what issue you're trying to fix and I'll see if I can help.
Edit: In V3, it has a new zipalign binary that does what you want.
Did some testing, updating profile/prl works because it uses apn settings from activation, but if you do ##72786# which erases everything then reboots and does an activation using apn.conf.xml to connect to ota. But the setting don't work for ota. Crashes phone app and then only way to fix by wiping and doing clean install.

That would be right because it has to go through the setup all over again. Just like a clean, full rom install. And it can't find the apn it needs.
Yes, all that file is, is a hack. Not a fix.
Well I'm going to keep working on trying to make the hack safe,
The new native hosts file appears to be blocking random pictures in the play store. Not sure which URL is the culprit but I disabled the file temporarily and the pictures come back. Other than that v3 is running great. Thank you.
I didn't experience any data or APN issues, rom running good, battery real good, only thing I noticed, LEDs aren't working for any app, for me.

I've seen that, too. It used to happen with the Mother of all Ad Blockers until that dev removed some entries. Some of the devs apparently host their images on sites that also serve ads.
Here's MoaAB if you're interested: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1916098

Thanks.
That can happen. If they are too restrictive, then you might have to use the stock Sprint one.

Mine are but the timing is about 10 sec between blinks.
I guess check your settings, and maybe wipe cache and dalvic?
I just realized I don't have the native Wi-Fi calling app. Can I ##72786# from v 3.01 and get it to download or is that only on factory ROM?
I really need some assistance ASAP on this one, folks. My phone/text is not working at all ever since I did the following stupidly today.
I tried to see if there was an option to get 2G/3G/4G working on the VS985 on 7.0. Guess I shouldn't have been so curious.
The only real steps I took to see was going to: Settings>Fulmics Tweaks>Advanced>Hidden Menu>Modem Protocol>Changed to Automatic..........now I have NO talk/text. Only 4G LTE data. Does anyone know what I'm referring to here? How do I get back to the original settings which worked fine!?
There must be a way out of this mess.
EDIT: there is! seemingly random combo led me to a solution.
Under the phone settings for mobile network - network mode: select CDMA+LTE/EVDO, and under the access point names: use VZWINTERNET. Make sure both of those are also the same in the hidden menu as well as selecting AUTO under Modem Protocol. That seemed to fix it for me.
Mods can close this one up.

Glad you got it figured out, do you have consistent 4g Data with Fulmics?

So far, so good. I haven't been to any areas with 3G coverage, but I hope to have that working as well now. I'm traveling halfway around the US this week, so it should make for a good test. Also installed Greenify - does voodoo magic for the battery life.

Thanks! If the combo above doesn't work, you can also try auto under the hidden menu frequency, and auto (or global) in the phone APN settings if LTE/CDMA don't give you a good signal or only give you data but not voice. For some reason the phone APN settings may look different depending on what you have previously selected or when you reboot. The access point should always be VZWINTERNET and you should not change any of those values in either the hidden menu or the phone network menu.
Once you get it figured out, you should not have any further issues or need to tweak these values unless traveling internationally. If that is the case, check the LTE bands carefully 1st and adjust frequency 2nd.
I'd be extremely cautious about changing any of these values. If you make any mistakes, recovering can be a slow process as these are system level changes that will impact the phone - no matter what version of android, rom or nandroid backups you had previously - cannot override these changes. Also, screenshots won't help because the changes in the hidden menu aren't reflected in the UI.
