I was told by the Verizon rep not to dial *228 with 4g phones becauseit can mess up the sim card. Can anyone confirm this?
It won't mess anything up, but it also doesn't do anything.

I would think that it would help 3G and 1X. But yeah, no effect on 4G.
This goes back to the Thunderbolt's original release. All 4G devices have the SIM card, which is activated along with your first 4G phone and essentially "encoded" with your phone number (so you can move the card from 4G device to 4G device and not have to "activate" with your phone number).
I also believe that *228 "programming" is not required because (at least partially) the 4G phones that can do simultaneous voice & data use the 1X antenna for the voice, and the 3G/4G antenna for data signal.
If you try to do *228 from a 4G phone, it just hangs up without doing anything else.
well I don't have 4g in my area yet but good to know. Thanks everyone!
Has anyone else had their data speed crap out on them after updating from 21089 to 21090? After updating this morning, I'm seeing a "1x" above my data icon now and even SpeedTest is timing out. If your data is fine, are you on a custom or stock ROM?
I'm on MeanRom v4.5, s-off with HBoot 1.4.
Not in my area its actually a lot faster now

Once again, stock PRL's have no effect on data speeds when you are on the Sprint Network. Stock prl's only affect what towers your phone connects to when roaming.

I believe you but it seems like such a coincidence that my data totally crapped out immediately after I updated the PRL. And a few others in the forums were reporting the same thing.

Changing the ROM changed the PRL?

Do you have proof of this? Seems to me the prl tells the phone which towers to connect with, Sprint or otherwise. Why would they bother updating it so often, if it is just used for roaming? I seriously doubt they spend that much money on man hours just to update roaming towers.
Preferred Roaming List. Sprint phones will automatically connect to sprint towers. The PRL is only used to tell the phone what towers and frequencies to connect to when roaming.
Then explain prl 00001 that only connects to Verizon.

The PRL affects every tower the phone connects to. ON network or OFF.
The list contains data about every access point on or off network that the phone can connect too. It then has priority set for on network access points so those will be chosen over an off network access point.
Roaming two definitions
1. When a wireless device associate automatically with a different access point.
2. When a wireless device connects to another providers access point.

Because it sets the Sprint towers as the roaming towers, thus the phone thinks Verizon towers are the towers it should be normally connecting to.

YOU MIND PROVING YOUR STATEMENT?
Everyone that got the update did a profile update. SINCE THEN EVERYONE IS HAVING THE SAME SLOW DATA ISSUE! SPRINT PURPOSELY DID THIS!
Sprint's data network is crap anyway. And I highly doubt Sprint would purposefully release a PRL to limit phone's data usage.
There was a prl pushed last year that everyone got and everyone was stuck on 1x data. I think this might have been when I was on the lg Optimus s, can't really remember... But either way, I traveled quite a ways back and forth to work, data never changed from 1x. Reverted to an older prl, I got 3g back. I know prl is meant to control roaming... But I think there's more to it than that. I've seen first hand it affect more than when I roam. But I will buy that it won give anyone faster or slower speeds from the same network other than affecting HOW it connects to the network.

By that rational you prove my point. The PRL does tell the phone which towers to connect with. Which in turn could effect data speed.

What matters is we need to downgrade our PRL TO 21089

Well, it would appear that something is amiss here with the PRL. I am running a custom rom, and when it was loaded, it had 21089 as the PRL. Data speeds here and places I travel were acceptable. Now this past week I was on the road to a location that according to the sprint coverage maps should be "best" for the coverage, but the entire time I was there the phone only had 1X connection at what could be described as sucky speeds at best. The fact it indicated 1X would tend to tell me it was actually roaming and not actually on a Sprint network. So is it possible that due to agreements they have in place with other providers, they show coverage in areas they actually have no towers and are using other providers towers? I may be wrong, but it is my understanding that those of us who do not have the "corporate" PRL are downgraded to 1X when roaming. Now that I am back in my home area, 3g is back and everything is back to normal.
By the way, I did not do a profile or prl update, so I am not sure when or how 21090 got loaded.
I do plan on contacting the folks at Sprint and see if they have any explanation for this level of service. Do not have a lot of hope here, but can't hurt. I will post an update if they give me anything actually useful!
Have a good weekend everyone.

Prl only affects roaming. Nothing to do with sprint native coverage. For example certain prl's will allow you to connect to 3g roaming with verizon.

Lol yes it does. Especially on Sprint and especially when you live where I live. If the verizon tower near where I live wasn't included in the roaming list that I have then I would probably not even connect to 1X.
So yes, it does matter.

No it doesn't tell your phone to connect to towers on an order. It's by cellular system.
The only thing you will get out of this is of you are in Baltimore it adds 800smr coverage there.

Is anybody else noticing poor or poorer signal with the PRL 25010?
What ever the previous PRL was it seemed to work well. Sometime this week my service updated with 25010 and i started to notice lower signal in areas that i have always had full signal.
Then on 3 occasions now i have had text messages come all at once..
Example, this morning 11 messages came in all at once. This is bad because where i live is always full bars / great service. For the past few days its been 1 to 3 bars..
Another example. At my office, i get 4G LTE half bars, its been hovering at 1 bar. Then i got an email from someone trying to call me and it goes straight to voice mail. So i called my self using a differnt phone and sure enough.. multiple times it went to voice mail. Power cycling the phone fixed the issue of calls not going thru but i still have what seems to be poorer recieve signal strength.
I did check the back cover and verify its on tight.
Also my data speeds seem slower, on 3G and LTE.. but i would expect this with lower signal anyway, so the two should go hand in hand..

Everything you describe would not be caused by a PRL update. These would be tower issues.

I am running Stock With Goodies latest version and flashed the Roam Only feature and am currently roaming at my home on Verizon's 4G
Speeds are 5 by 1.5 I have read that this is not possible on our phones because they were different frequencies or radios or something, but I can tell you that it is working. Anyone ever see this?

I too have seen both the roaming cell icon with the triangle and the 4G icon at the same time while in Roam Only mode. I've never bothered pulling a speed test as I always assumed it was a fluke.
You weren't roaming on Verizon 4g! Impossible, you do realize that LTE and voice are different connections on your phone right. Your data was connected to Sprint 4g and your voice was roaming on Verizon.

That was my impression too. Maybe there is a glitch in some instances where "Roam Only" is choosen and it is only changing the voice connection to Verizon but isn't changing the data connection. Either that or an icon bug when roam only is on.
I was out of town this past weekend. Wisconsin Dells if anyone is interested. While I was there I was experiencing some bad signal, so I read multiple times that you could force a PRL update for your phone to allow it to possibly roam on newer towers. I dialed the *228, then pressed 2. After the update my phone will now only connect to 3g. Even back home now, which I know for sure is a 4g area, I am still stuck on 3g. I spent quite a while messing with settings. The one that controls what network to use. I tried them all really. But its set to LTE/CDMA only right now.
I was running CM10.1 from 8/3. So I formatted system/data/cache/dalvik, everything basically, reflashed the latest build of CM 10.1, and it is still doing it.
Any other ideas before I reflash back to stock and call Verizon?
So I flashed back to stock. Still stuck in 3g. But in the touchwiz interface now it's a bit odd. In Mobile Networks, the list item says Preferred network mode: CDMA/LTE/EVDO. When I touch it, it presents 3 options, Global, LTE / CDMA, and GSM / UMTS. The LTE / CDMA item is selected. The odd part is that even though LTE is listed first on the option when it is selected from the pop up menu, it still says CDMA is first in the preferred network mode, the gray text. That is even more odd is that if I select the GSM one, it doesn't connect to anything, which is expected. But then if I go back into the option and select LTE / CDMA, the status bar icon will say 4g for a half second and then say 3g.
Any ideas?
I found this. Is my sim card really toasted?
https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/786562
"I was recently browsing a different message board to see what was being said about the GS3's poor reception and data, and I came across a discussion on "updating towers" using *228. From what I read, it seems that dialing this number from a 4G phone not only does nothing to update your towers, but it also destroys your SIM card, and prevents you from accessing 4g. Consequently, you will need to get a replacement SIM card. I find it hard to believe that Verizon would allow something like this to happen. It seems that they would notify their customers when upgrading.
Has this happened to anyone???"
Update: I called Verizon. They confirmed the sim can get toasted if you dial *228 on a 4g phone. So I'll have to go into the store tomorrow morning to get a new sim. The support guy was cool about it. It said he did this exact same thing himself before he started working for Verizon.
Yeah I have heard that dialing *228 from a 4G phone is a big no-no but I didnt know that it actually fries your sim. At least you can get another one for free.

I wish I had seen this thread sooner and I have been spending days trying to figure out why my phone would no longer connect to the LTE network after traveling to a 3G only area. Whoops!
I definitely think this should be a sticky - or at least warning not to use *228.
