OK - I'm starting to think I'm the only person that has this issue as I haven't seen it reported..
Sometimes, my Photon won't launch apps. Apps that are already running continue to run and I can switch back and forth between them, but trying to start a new app, it just doesn't start! Fix has been to either reboot, or have it go to sleep and wake it up 15 minutes later and try again. I've had it do this while a system task manager was running, so could see that there was plenty of free memory (RAM) available..
This includes launching apps from apps that are already running. i.e. - sometimes the browser doesn't launch from a search query. (mostly though pressing an icon on the STOCK launcher doesn't launch it..)
Anyone else see this?

Yeah mine seems to do it every once in a while too. I noticed that if you open the task manager and kill the market then whatever app your trying to open will end up opening up right after the market closes.

One of the reasons, I took mine back to the Sprint Store. When they fix it, I may buy it again... otherwise, my OG Evo is perfectly fine.
I can't believe more people aren't experiencing this. I do have LauncherPro installed but I don't think that's the reason. I can recreate this all the time. After installing an app through Market, I randomly can't open apps from the home screen.
Nothing happens unless I force close the Marketplace.
Any input on this?

The new market is absolute crap in my opinion, way to many FC's with it and it just doesn't do what it needs to. If I can go faster than it can download, select, etc then it needs to be reworked, also I get a lot of packet errors, have to download apps two or three times just to get it to install.. Great idea but it needs a patch bad!
I wouldn't see why this is a reason to take the Photon back and go back to an Evo, I mean the Evo is a cool phone but the hardware on it is sub par compared to this phone. I used to have one, and it doesn't even hold a candle. But to each their own.

I have only had this happen a few times I was told that it is associated with the battery manager settings if you don't use performance it can cause issues that was what was causing the muted audio issues the battery management settings put it on performance and I don't see the issue.

I just noticed my battery mode was set to Nighttime Saver. Hadn't even looked at this option. I went ahead and changed it to Performance Mode and will see if it happens again.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Mine does it too. After the update that just came out it seems to do it less now.
Just started having this issue today. App launches and others won't launch unless you kill the "hanging" app or the market.
I have no idea if this is a bug in blur or some kind of hardware defect (memory). It seems to be a software issue.
Problem persists after complete hard reset and app cache clear.
I'm using an 8 GB Samsung class 2 microSD card (from old Evo 4G). It has been reformatted.
Other symptoms: Back button and select widgets become unresponsive.
App count at time problem started: 72
yeah i have the same issues. not sure how to fix it. Usually a reboot does it but man i hate to reboot it all the time.
Could you list any changes, apps, app counts, microSD card, or settings your Photon has?
Mine is working smoothly after redoing my Photon for the 2nd time, reformating the microSD card via the phone, keeping my App count below 70, setting the Battery mode to Performance, and not installing Bump or Sensorly.
Still trying to narrow down the issue but it's looking like it's software related.
still happening
Is this problem still happening to anyone's phone?? It's starting to get really annoying, I tried a hard reset twice on two different photons and the problem's still occurring.
I fixed this by installing the automemory manager. Details in my thread called lag be gone.

Hello,
Is anyone else having issues with Gmail crashing?
I can get it to crash by looking at "all mail" and then scrolling down.
On my galaxy nexus this scrolling goes back to the server and loads more messages. On my prime it just crashes and goes completely black or crashes to the home screen. I have to then force stop Gmail in order to get it to load again.
I'm having the exact same problem with my prime. I'm guessing it had to do with some other app that is running because if i restart my prime, it doesn't happen again for a while. I've searched and haven't found any others having this problem though.
I also experience some "back to homescreen" while messing in Gmail. I just cleared the data/cache to see if it will help.
I am having these troubles, too. Have anybodies problems been solved (perhaps with the new Firmwares that were put out by Asus - I am still on 9.4.2.11 as I am based in Austria) ?
The .15 update has made it so that I do not crash any longer while scrolling.
Although, sometimes when I scroll down it just sits there....loading conversations....
I still experience gmail crash... I run WW .14. I hope .15 will fix it when it will be available.
Mine crashes as well on the lastest OTA firmware. I don't think I even need to scroll to crash to homescreen. I think it does it even when I just click on an email occasionally.
Gmail crashes soooo often for me. It's driving me batty. Any ideas on how to fix it yet?

In the few cases I've seen mentioned, whether that even helps temporarily is debatable. In my case it didn't help at all, so I just set up the "EMail" app to get my GMail instead of the GMail app.
yes i have tried that mltiple times, removed the gmail widget since i saw some mention that it could be causing the problems. no luck. removed other widgets one at a time as well. removing beautiful widgets seems to help with the home screen "crash" I was experiencing a lot, but does nothing to fix gmail
I guess I'll have to set up another email app or use a browser, but damn! neither are great fixes (
I just started using the ASUS Email app. That seems to work fine, including the widgets.
This is BS
Come on, Asus, this is Gmail, not some goofy homegrown app or a game or something. And this has been going on for a while. It is not something that just started. I swear Asus has their priorities up their ass sometimes.
I have the same problem ever since the last OTA update. The gmail app is virtually unusable, also get a similar problem with Maps crashing out when searching for places but I guess that's for a different thread.
Tried many things one of which, removing the Beautiful Widgets home screen weather/clock widget, solved a different problem where all the icons would disappear from the home screens.
It's a real shame 'cos I've had none of the hardware problems other people have had, but the flaky apps/browser/ICS are really making this tablet very difficult to use as an everyday device. Maybe it's time to unlock and try Virtuous ROM.
Maybe it's related to this:
http://www.androidcentral.com/google-acknowledges-gmail-app-may-be-flickering-says-fix-way
Acer Iconia A500 -- received stock ICS update a week ago and since then Gmail app has been playing up like all of you guys -- random crashes, flickering, freezes etc.
Very frustrating because that's the most used app on my tab. Now I have to revert to using native email app which kinda suck.
like some of the people here, my stock browser will hang up and be unresponsive on a regular basis. Sometimes a force close helps, but sometimes, when I look in the Asus Task Manager, or if I go to Settings> Apps > select "Running Apps", the browser doesn't show up, as if it's not even considered running. I usually have to select the app itself from settings > apps and then force close it.
Anyone else find it strange that the device doesn't even show the app as "running"? I don't know what to make of this, but perhaps someone else here does.
BTW, I did try Gary's Key's experimental fix, and got rid of Chrome and flash, rebooted, and then reinstalled Flash, but I'm still having the same problem.

Ya, uninstalling Chrome and Flash didn't work for me either. I want to say that the browser hanging issue has been a problem with mine ever since I got it, but I honestly can't remember for sure. Hopefully this is something that is fixed soon as the browser is probably the most used thing on a tablet, so it is quite an annoying thing to have to deal with.
As far as the browser not showing up in the Running Apps list, I know I have seen the same thing with other apps as well. I'm not sure off the top of my head which Apps they were but I know in the past I have tried to go to the Running Apps list to try and force close an app only to find that it wasn't listed. I had to switch to the All Apps view and found the app that I wanted to kill that way.

Have you tried tapping "Show Cached Processes" in the top-right corner? Android apps might appear to be "running" but are in fact suspended and cached ready to be instantly restored provided that the RAM being used to cache them isn't needed for other purposes.
I havent looked to see if the browser shows up in apps running.....
BUT BY GOD FIX THE BROWSER.....OH THE HUMANITY!!!
I may have 10 apps intalled, stupid ones. Even before I installed ANY apps I would get the "browser not responding...wait/cancel...."
It seems to have gotten worse with the latest updates. Now I get LOCKUPS like others are talking about. Resets havent helped.
Dont know, but this **** is getting old!
EDIT: Why the hell do I have to go thru all these apps, resets, clear caches etc.....the browser should, well just freaking work.
I've noticed more and more browser issues lately. Like playing a game on Facebook.... forget it. Then I get the dreaded wait box. Why can't Google make a browser that actually works?
Do you have plugins set to "always on" or "on demand" in the stock browser? I found that setting them to on demand stops all that. I think it's the flash plugin and the way sites are using it that's causing all the problems.

I get problems with the stock browser with them on "on demand". "Always on" would slow things down too much to leave on anyway.
I had these problems since the Prime's inception.
I really like to see an Internet Explorer for Android. That's how bad the current batch of Android browsers have sucked so bad. I have to turn to IE for hope.

I realize the quasi-joking, but what a horrid comment.
I'm sorry, but I feel that Opera Mini generally does a better job than IE ever thought of: then there's Opera Mobile, it's the only one I'll consider for my phone. ICS Browser+ does a good job of showing you what the stock browser could be. MaxthonPad handles and looks pretty well, I don't personally use gestures and the new tab button is kind of in a bad place IMO.
Anyway, nothing I've tried has remedied the stock browser, and I hadn't noticed it missing in Running Apps, but it's not often that I look there or force close anything.
Both my ICS phone and my TFP as well as my friend complaining about it on his ICS phone are all unstable. Granted it has yet to really annoy me but I think its Android not the TPF. This is my opinion YMMV and it could be the ASUS fault in some way.

Not true.
I have a Galaxy Nexus with ICS and I never had this problem on that browser.
It's somewhat related to the TPF.
sad, because besides this problem I love this tablet.

Like i said your mileage may vary. Three cases on my end is making me think its Android its self. You haven't seen the issue on your end so it points to the Prime. Different cases and different perspectives. Then again the Galaxy Nexus is also ICS Native so maybe that could be part of the problem I don't pretend to have that answer.

Don't blame Google. Blame Asus. I've had a GSM Galaxy Nexus since launch, and the browser works flawlessly - no hangs, no unresponsiveness. This is all Asus.
Speaking of stock browser problems, anyone else notice anything like this? Some kind of malicious exploit in a browser's cache or something-other, apparently even an unrooted user got the issue so I just find it really interesting since that rules out changes to the hosts file.

It was me, and indeed ics browser+ without javascript is extremely fast. It's now even faster then chrome on my desktop pc.
It's gone from 5sec loading time for this forum to sub 1sec.
Only problem is that some sites need the javascript. But for that you can use a different browser.

Exactly!! If anyone remembers awhile back I was bragging on how the galaxy nexus running ICS put the iPhone 4s browser to shame & that was with flash running!!
I said once Asus got ICS it would blow Apple away. Well Asus screwed that up big time!
Guys, could someone who knows what he's doing change vm heap size to 128 or even lower and try then? I've done a bit of research and 256 seems way to high.
One thing for sure, its not browsers, chrome or flash fault.

How exactly do you know if a site uses javascript? Does the site just not load or is it minor? What kind of stuff uses it?
Going to give this a shot on my prime. The hangups are pretty annoying but I have really gotten used to and like the ICS+ browser so don't want to change!
Had mine since christmas. I have accepted the wifi and GPS issues. Also the sdcard popping out. No other real issues
Now I'm getting a few deal breaker issues out of nowhere!
1. Browser crashes at least 1 time for every hour of surfing. Ill be watching view and standard surfing and all of a sudden the browser closes and leaves me on home screen. This is not talking about the constant "not responding" alerts. I need flash so I use this browser.
2. Can't use gmail! Its very sporadic but basically ill try to open an email and it becomes non responsive and eventually either closes or just goes black screen. I've read this is common? How can it be?
Those are the only 2 things I do on my device. Surf videos and check emails.
Any known solutions I may have missed? Any help much appreciated.
No idea if you have seen it or if it will fix your gmail issue but there is a gmail update out today.

Sounds like you need to first update the gmail app
Secondly your cache might be full : try one of two things - download and app called cache cleaner and use it or cold boot your Prime which essentially does the same thing
I'm not seeing an update but ill keep looking thank you! I really hope it helps so I can use my device more
Nobody else has similar issues huh?

hmm, 480mb does seem kind of high. Also which browser do you use?
I personally prefer either chrome or Opera.
Opera seems to be the fastest with the least issues, however the it doesn't feel as smooth as stock or chrome. (smooth as in scrolling and such, not the loading speed, etc)
GMail was just updated today that might help, version is 4.0.5

I'm in the same boat as you OP. I never had decent GPS, I didn't test Wifi/BT death until a few weeks back & Wifi was weaker than my OG droid. But, up until a month ago I wasn't having any daily issues...no more. I bought mine in the HH Gregg Friday the 13th "sale".
Now I'm starting to see screen bleed. That jives with the screw tightening theory.
The tablet crashes almost daily. The first crash didn't happen until after .19.
The stock browser wants to FC/Wait/Cancel at once per use.
Wifi is all over the place - it used to be only a few dBm lower than the OG Droid, now it can be 10 to 15 dBm less.
Wifi/BT immediately kills streaming (finally bought a BT headset)
I can't wait to see how bad the RMA process will be. I'll be video taping the packing at the post office, heh...

HHGregg next to Target actually carried these things? That's a surprise. And you must mean .15 it went from .15 to .21 US never got a .19.. as for the wait message in browser try going into settings>advanced and setting plug-ins to On demand see if that helps

Thank you, at least I am not alone. Do you have any other info on this issue?
Is it google? Asus? Did the cleaning of Cache help?
I am at a loss if I cant have email working. In fact, who the hell will buy a device with no email??
Which means I'll have a $500 dollar paper weight.
Gmail has been fine never crashed since I bought it in Feb.. Are you rooted? Run fix permissions if you can that might help
not rooted
maybe its only us first batchers? the bcokas or whatever
Tons of opengl errors in the logs when gmail crashes. Sometimes I do see other error messages as well. I have tried submitting bug reports to google. No response. Tried with Asus. One completely inane and unrelated response 8 days later. Not sure where else to try looking for help. I'm not rooted. Completely stock. C2 serial number. I have done a lot of googling and found a lot of other mentions of the problem, but no fixes. Clearing cache and data does not fix it, nor did a factory reset.
I am in the same boat!!!
I could deal with all the other problems, but the web browsing SUCKS!!!!
I have done all the settings BS.....java on/off....plug ins on demand...etc. Even with Java off and plug ins set to on demand I have had the "wait/cancel" pop up....wtf!
Even other browsers....the page will load about 75% real quick and then BAM stop. It will then take some time to load the rest or I get the "wait/cancel" deal.
Twice today out of nowhere the screen goes black...and then it reboots.
The only thing I can think of is there is some sort of bottleneck with all the adds in java. If there is root for .21 maybe adfree would help.
But why the hell would you have to go thru all this!! I really love this little thing, but if this is the top of the line android tablet......man that is pretty freaking sad!!!
Its embarrassing sometimes, trying to show some one the prime. I dont even want to show anyone how it works....its gotten that bad.
As for the browser waiting/force close messages..
and it may not work across the board because I don't know what you have installed.
I got the wait/close messages very frequently during every browsing session.
using stock,ics +,boat,chrome,xscope,and opera, etc.
I uninstalled chrome and flash, then reinstalled flash and I now use opera exclusively and haven't had a wait/close message since. Going on a week now!
I use desktop user agent and flash always on.
I hate opera on my evo because its so slow but it works great on the prime.
Can't hurt to try it if you happen to have chrome installed.
never had an issue with gmail on mine. have you tried removing your gmail account under accounts and sync, then go to app settings for gmail, clear the cache and data, then re-adding your account?
I've got a BCO serial.

This might be simple, but have you tried a factory reset? I had stability issues with a couple of apps as well as the occasional OS freeze and a factory reset after the .21 update cleared up all of my performance problems.
If you check the "automatic restore" box under Backup & Restore in the System menu the tablet will automatically re-install all of your Google Play apps.

Ever since Honeycomb, the absolute biggest problem I've had with this tablet is the browser. It doesn't freaking stay open. No matter what browser I use, no matter if I'm running Honeycomb, ICS or Jellybean, the browser always crashes. And it's not a typical FC either; It just closes right back to Launcher.
I've been hearing that it's caused by some null pointer exception in JavaScript; But you mean to tell me between Android 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 4.0 - 4.0.4 and 4.1, 4.1.1, that this issue STILL isn't resolved? Not to mention, it only happens on tablets (Tegra 2 issue? Xoom has the same issue).
For me, it most notably happens when I'm browsing a Twitter page. In the past minute alone, I've had browser crash on my SIX times trying to load a page on Twitter. Let's make that 7 now.
So what the hell really causes this, and why won't it go away? My Sensation and myTouch 4G can browse just fine, and this temporary Galaxy S III works perfectly too, so what's with the tablet?
EDIT: Disabled JavaScript and set plugins to ondemand. Same damn result.
I've used the stock browser, Dolphin, Chrome, and Skyfire and none of them have ever crashed on me. Ever. Sounds like there is either something defective about your device perhaps your internet connection. A factory reset might help, as might going into applications, finding the Google framework and clearing data. Do the same for your browsers as well.
That's funny, I've noticed just the same thing. Browsers work terribly on this tablet.
With me, they only do crash sometimes – a lot more than on my HTC phone, though. But using browsers is a real pain, as they all feel kinda buggy, and I don't think it's their fault, since they all show the same "bugs". They're all kinda laggy. I've updated to ICS today and I was crying in emotion for being able to finally download Chrome, as it's the most stable one I've ever used in my phone, but I was disappointed when I noticed it too felt quite laggy. I'd rather go home and turn my Mac on than to struggle with web browsing on this tablet, honestly. I've tried many browsers –*stock, Dolphin, Boat, that other one with green icon, and also Skyfire or something.
If anyone has a better thing, or a solution, or anything, I bet there are many desperate people that would die to hear it.
(I know I sound more dramatic than I should, but let's face it, web browsing sucks in this device.)
I've never had any problem web browsing on my Tab. None. I'm not rooted, maybe that's why, or maybe it has to do with the sites you visit. Dunno.
On my tab with HC 3.2, the stock browser would also just disappear to the home screen, but not all that often.
I flashed to ICS, and the stock browser got a bit quirky. The address bar would no longer hide when I scrolled down
on a web page. Would stutter as if it was trying to hide but wouldn't.
Installed Dolphin and it worked fine.
I went back to HC 3.2 (had some other issues besides the browser) and so far the stock browser is working fine.

Dolphin does the same thing though, just a lot less frequently. Motorola Xoom users in a thread from a year ago reported this same problem (in a filled up 14 page thread), and several of users report the same exact issue. I'm gonna poll some more Tegra 2 sections and see if they suffer from the same thing but it looks like this is just another issue with this ****ty SoC, like the portrait mode lag.

Not to sound rude but your opinion isn't really credible to me, you're the same one who went crazy when I said this tablet sucked. You have bias written all over you.

Come on dude, I'd have to be rooted to be running Jellybean. And as everyone else has shown, it does seem to vary by website. Full pages on twitter ALWAYS crash, (they work once in a blue moon). Other times browser crashes when browser feels like it hasn't crashed in a while. I could get through a day perfectly, then bam, crash.
I'm not a dude.
I've never had a problem with any of the browsers I've tried, I think maybe you have a faulty tablet.
I to have the same problems. The browser would even close and reopen with no webpages there.

Yes Google.ca. The browser just shut down without a force close notice and opens blank. Plus it becomes non responsive, on pages that have a lot of javascript.

That specifically happens the second time. On the first crash, I'd relaunch and it would reload my pages, but 99/100 times it would crash seconds afterward. Upon opening it again, i get one tab with the Google homepage.

Sounds like JavaScript is the culprit, but it still crashed for me even after I disabled JavaScript
I think it's all about memory management, I cant tell about HC 'cause I barely used it, but JB is still very experimental.

I'm biased because I've never had any problems with my browser crashing? Whatever. I also never "went crazy" over anything. All you do is complain and complain. Why not just get an iPad and move on?
I have tried several browsers also, and for me I really only have problems with chrome freezing (not force closing). It seems to be random, but happens more frequently when opening new tabs. However, the stock browser on the same sites seems to work every time. My guess is that it may be due to timeouts on the network connection or possibly memory related. And, it seems to be random... I may go a day without a freeze, then have two back to back freezes. Oh tegra2, why don't you behave?
Hey guys,
It's been almost a week since I flashed the stock ICS and installed Chrome. So far so good, no complaints. I'm really relieved, as I was almost giving up. Give it a try

Chrome is the way to go. The ability to create an account and sync all relevant browser data to your devices via the cloud - why hasn't anyone thought of this before? So obvious and useful.
I also strongly recommend trying out Boat Browser, which is highly underrated. Smoother and smarter layout than Dolphin and the best alternative to Chrome, IMO.

Chrome acts really weird on JB. I'm still running pershoot's 8/4 build but I'll be updating and trying out Chrome again. Last time I tried it I would always get a white page while switching tabs, and scrolling was odd. Browser does a much better job but Chrome has too much nice functionality lol

I doubt it's memory relate, it happens a lot with 1 tab open, and with a full Gig of RAM, browsing should be painless when it comes to memory management, not to mention, but Android's memory management scheme is the most beautiful thing I've seen. Tabs and apps actually know how to stay open, and Android knows what to close. Works a lot better than any tablet I've used, even better than crapple's iPad.
