Temp Root just to remove bloat apps? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If you stop after the first few rooting steps, would you have root in such a way that you could just remove the extra bloat apps that load all the time?
The only reason at the moment that I want to root is for this.
If so, where exactly would you stop?
Thanks

The problem is the emmc write protection. You would still have to downgrade to make changes and at that point you might as well run the ENG Hboot so you can flash back to the newest radio and OS.

Yeah, you don't want to leave yourself stuck on downgraded software just to get root and remove bloat. If you're gonna go through with it, make sure you do it 'til the end.

Got it. Thanks

To temporarily freeze bloat with temp root (comes back on a data wipe):
Code:
adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp
adb shell
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/psneuter
/data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb shell

Excellent! I had a feeling you could just use the psneuter to gain temp root. I told my coworker I had an Idea if he would let me test on his.
He wants hulu, Does any one know if temp root would give enough access so we could use root explorer to replace the libflashplayer.so file, also wondering Wifi Tether would work with temp root?

Actually, for the moment, (u may know this) the actual HTC mobile hotapot works on all new tbolts til may 15, ive used mine and its as fast or faster than my freakin wifi!

I hear ya! I did a speed test in my office space at work in downtown (fastest LTE speeds) and it's faster than any WiFi hotspot in my vicinity! 10-15 Mbps down and read 20 Mbps up! DANG fast! My team wants to do an offsite in downtown and use the HTC Hotspot to test.
Thanks for posting how to freeze bloatware apps with temporary root (psneuter). I rooted by OG Droid with CM7, and my kids cracked the screen (still works but ordering part for $20) which gave me an excuse to buy the ThunderBolt.
I put vzw insurance on it, since smartphones are getting too darn expensive, so I don't want to void any warranty/insurance I have on the phone by replacing bootloaders and getting unrestricted root. Will psneuter continue to work on later upgrades? How was this utility produced? (Is it a Linux assembly built against the AOSP?)
I'm very familiar with Linux development and fairly familiar with Android ROM development (from my customized Droid), so any one that can point me in the right direction would be great!
Thanks,
-Drex

[Q] psneuter question

Can I push the psneuter to temporarily root my Thunderbolt without hurting anything? I simply want to be able to change the bloatware from .apk to .bak to remove the visual in the apps panel. My phone is a work phone and I don't want to risk bricking or would I risk that anyways?
Thank you
If you don't own it don't screw with it.

You can do something like this pretty safely. It will disable the bloat until you have an OTA update (if you accept an OTA, it will have to be done again):
Code:
adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp
adb shell
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/psneuter
/data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb shell
pm disable com.cequint.ecid
pm disable com.tunewiki.lyricplayer.android
pm disable com.htc.vvm
pm disable com.rhapsody
pm disable com.amazon.kindle
pm disable com.gravitymobile.app.hornbill
pm disable com.vznavigator.ADR6400L
pm disable com.foxmobile.bitbop
pm disable com.ea.rockband.launcher
pm disable com.gravitymobile.vzwinstaller
pm disable com.gameloft.android.GAND.GloftLGolf2.lgolf2
pm disable com.slacker.radio
pm disable com.blockbuster.htc.app
pm disable com.smithmicro.DM
pm disable com.vcast.mediamanager
Thanks, I give that a try.
I can actually play with it, but if if bricked they wouldn't replace the device.
Thanks again yareally!

[Q] "Adb shell pm disable" not removing bloatware....

I'm freshly unlocked and perm rooted; I've already used Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, etc.... my Su is working.
I looked at the CleanTool thread in the Dev forum to see how to remove bloat, and executed the same commands from adb shell .... here's a small pasted section :
$ pm disable com.gameloft.android.Verizon.GloftLGolf2.lgolf2
pm disable com.gameloft.android.Verizon.GloftLGolf2.lgolf2
[1] Killed pm disable com.gameloft.android.Verizon.Glof
2.lgolf2
$ pm disable com.blockbuster.app.htc
pm disable com.blockbuster.app.htc
[1] Killed pm disable com.blockbuster.app.htc
Following a reboot, these bloat apps are still here and functioning. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong, or a more effective way to selectively remove what I consider bloat?
$ means you are not in SU
you need to type SU in ADB
The $ will change to #
Then try again (making sure if your phone asks you to allow ADB SU privs, you check allow; if that happens)

Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but I was really surprised why "pm disable-user" does not work as user but also seems to require root-permissions? Makes no sense to me...

UNIVERSAL New Root for all TRANSFORMER Units

Hello,
I have found this bug on the TF101 and I do have TF201 as well but its not a production model so i cant really test this 100%
If someone can test my root method. below i will paste.
This is a new root method.
This is a linux / OSX version only for now.
When you untar the file. Please make sure to edit the runme.sh it has a path for adb that you need to fix. Other then that it will work.
You just chmod 755 runme.sh and run it
http://www.mrcellphoneunlocker.com/V2/tf101_ics_root.tar.gz
Windows version of my exploit can be found at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1515470
Reserved for later
im pretty positive it won't work, seems they made a lil mistake on the rights on your system folder after the backup utility been used bro <- it does work
but still, can't wait for someone to actual test it, would be funny if it however would work.
after all nice catch so far

Thank you.
Want to know if it works on the TF201.
You need to run the backup util on an app installed (This util is found in the app draw)
then once the script runs. it will ask you to do the same backup again and it should reboot and you have root.
it works >.<
ok serious, i lol'ed very hard

Forget all these tethered to computer root methods..lmfao we need a simple apk root install method. root from prime itself. This would be easiest to implement and more people could root.

that won't work in this case, since you take the advantage of their app...

and if people can't obtain root on the ways that has been given, do they actually need root than?

unless you make an app saying do this than /restart app/ app sees it has been done/ than goes to step 2/ etc.
would be annoying?

$1 or something. Been getting a bit ticked lately posting things and no one ever donates anything for work done :/
Fair enough..if it shows on market ill buy

Indeed, I'll unroot and test if you so please.
I'll certainly buy it if you do release it! I know a lot of people would be that much more comfortable with taking some control over their devices.

Depends on which phone you are talking about.
920e (China Version) you can use DNA's recovery.
920d (International Version/Singapore version?) unlock available but no working recovery.

I have the 920e, DNA recovery DEFINITELY DOES NOT WORK! So far no one has gotten recovery working on 920e. I am in China currently and reading through all the chinese sites people are trying to use TWRP and CMW posted on XDA but no luck.

Sorry if I'm wrong, but I found all those info from google, it seems these people are able to boot into recovery to flash SU
The Chinese sites are very confusing when they are naming the phone. Many sites just call it X920e/Butterfly/DNA but they are acutally 3 different phones.

I've tried all of those and none work. Look at the screenshot for the 1st link, that's a recovery for the Galaxy S2. Hard to trust some of those chinese sites, that's why I come here knowing that the good devs of XDA will figure things out
Had the chance to sneak into China and get a HTC Butterfly (920e variant) there for myself. Full of Chinese crap apps and no Google apps at all
Anyway, unlock (via htcdev) worked fine but that's pretty much where the fun stops so far. Like jlevy73 I tried pretty much everything written anywhere on the interwebz and nothings works. No recovery, no root, no gapps, no play store.

Yep, quite sad.
Off topic, anyone here with the X920e having issues with HTC Sense Weather? I'm in Beijing and the weather is off by about 10F. It's also night but the icon shows the sun. I've cleared data for both weather and HTC Sense but no luck. GPS is working ok though.

u can still flash DNA recovery and gain temp root, just u can't use the full function of recovery. from there you can still install Google Play etc, and remember not to reboot the phone.
I'm wondering if you bought 920e and use it outside of China, will you be able to connect to 3G services? I thought 920e is TD-CDMA instead of WCDMA.

How do you flash gapps if you cannot get into recovery? How do you flash SU without getting into recovery? Perhaps I am missing something obvious.
The 920e is WCDMA only so in China it would be compatible with China Unicom. TD-CDMA is what China Mobile uses. The 920e would be compatible with ATT in the US.

More or less (once more) just confirming / repeating what jlevy73 said:
- How do you gain temp root if the (DNA) recovery doesn't seem to work properly?
- Why not reboot the phone? oO Because of the broken recovery? That is not run in a normal boot up.
- the x920e is made to work with China Unicom exclusive (but interestingly isn't simlocked) in Mainland China and they use WCDMA which works perfectly here in Europe. No 4G chip, though.

It's possible that recovery was installed, we're just not able to access it in the traditional way. I am going to try and adb push superuser into recovery. If that works, then we will have root and can then push google apps into recovery. I am going to give it a go and see what happens.

Good to see you made progress. I also have root but still don't have access to the play store. I was able to push the store and it's in my app folder but when I try to open it, it immediately closes.
What adb command did you use to push the play store? I think I might have set the wrong permissions with chmod.

Play Store itself is only one part, you need some of the gapps stuff too. Not sure which, just installed what looked important (GoogleLoginService.apk, GoogleServicesFramework.apk and such). Didn't need to chmod anything gapps related. Oh and use the right version for Android 4.1, not 4.2

Really that's all I did, push su, superuser and busybox then chmod them. When I rebooted I had superuser installed and was able to install root explorer, titanium, etc.

And how did you get root? Ah, figure chmodding su isn't enough and I should also chmod the apk, reading what you did with Phonesky.apk Nope, still no working root

Frustration, lost root and after pushing all the google apps, framework, etc still don't have access to play store. Guess I will have to wait until a real recovery is released.

Okay, I was just being stupid, once again: only did chmod 755 on the su binary instead of 6755. Also, the Superuser.apk (like any other apk) doesn't need more privileges than 644.
Now that I have root, I used rom manager (which is the recovery I use), to install gapps completely (did a cherry pick before). Worked perfectly. So the recovery of the DNA is fully working except something with the screen driver is messed up.

Btw, do you have the x920e? After several more hours of frustration still don't have root or gapps. Are you by chance in Beijing? :cyclops:

Yes, I do. How did you actually manage to lose root? No, not in Beijing or Asia anymore.

temporary root over ADB

Prerequisites:
Dirty Santa
ADB
HOW TO: (UPDATE COMING SOON...)
Follow DirtySanta all the way through step 3.5
Step 1: On Windows, double-click "RUNMEFIRST.bat, DO NOT CLOSE THE LOG WINDOW THAT OPENS, then double-click "Step1.bat"
On Linux,
./RUNMEFIRST.sh
Step 2: Open a Separate Terminal, then run
./Step1.sh
Step 3: Wait for shell prompt then.
run-as con
chmod 0777 /storage/emulated/0/*
This will not give you full root access!
Please comment if you're willing to help me out in getting root.
Just so everyone knows I am not taking credit for writing any of the code, none of it was me, I just was fiddling try to create root and found this worked to get root over ADB.
when does this wear off?

I have not done enough to know for sure, but all the changes you made are going to reset most likely be on a reboot.

That should give you a temporary root. I am on android 6.0, not sure if this will work on five but I don't see why it wouldn't. from there i'm going to try to make root.

I will either tonight or tomorrow. I'm in the process to actually getting a full root, I think i'm on to something and may be able to get this to work. This is just a temporary thing for people to try.

OK, My mother language isn't Eng, so I can't understand the meaning of "Follow DirtySanta all the way through step 3.5".
Is your meaning that flollow the guide from step 1 to step 3.5?
Im not getting root access, root check is not recognizing it and neither is an app like freedom

Download v20.zip
extract it
run "RUNMEFIRST.bat"
give it a second and then run STEP1.bat
wait and itll show up as a normal shell "$"
then type in "run-as con" without the quotes
then you will see "#"

Yeah but then the next line does nothing, by that I mean chmod 0777 /storage/emulated/0/*
Plus even if that works how do I get root?

Do you see the # symbol after you type run-as con
if so then i believe you have a temporary root shell.
by the way, the line after that is just giving elevated permissions to your entire internal storage, this part of the code does not apply to us as we do not need to give more permissions to anything on our internal storage as we will not be using them unlike the other several steps on that dirty santa post.
the problem is, even though we have a sort of root shell selinux is stopping us from being able to modify any of the other files.

What are you thinking to get full root from here?
Flash a modified boot img somehow that still let's the phone boot but gives us root even with the SElinux still set to enforcing. Go reading on the dirty cow thread and get caught up
Is this an option if I wanted to change my font or do something that required root? Would it survive past a reboot?

This is still exactly what you see when reading through the post. Please follow the main ROOT thread from Albine45 (patiently wait for Albine's frequent updates on progress) and when full root is achieved, you'll know and a guide will show up to walk you through. For now, you can change system fonts in your settings menu on Android. There are a few free built in fonts and others you can purchase. Just look through your settings menu.

Thank you so much. I'll definitely be watching for full root?
After I run "run-as con" package 'con' is unknown
Any solutions?
I only need to delete or rename /system/bin/logd it's giving me some troubles, battery drain and over heating.
