[Q] Looking for backplate replacement - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've noticed that since the backplate of the Atrix is all plastic, it gets pretty slippery and wants to fall out of my hands a lot. Are there any rubberized backplate replacements for the Atrix? I'm looking for something similar to the texture of the back of the Droid 2. I really don't like cases because I feel that they add so much girth to the phone. I'm also open to any DIY solutions as well.

I know someone used some type of rubber spray paint or something to give it a textured rubber feel. I'll try to dig up a link.
*edit*
Bingo!

Good luck my friend

I may give that a try. What I would like to do is get a stock backplate replacement and spray that, just in case I don't like it or I screw it up.

I saw that Bell in Canada will be carrying spare backs and also some 3rd party rubberized backs. you might want to look there first.
EDIT: after I thought about it, it's either "rubberized" or "ruggedized". either way, it's non-oem

@neer2005
I have seen that one floating around Google but I feel its a little sketchy since every website has the exact same low res pic. I may wait a bit to see if anyone else gets it.

Tilt2 Praetorian Crystal Slip cover review (Hard-rubberized)

This is my first review, so I hope it doesn't suck.
Both my wife and I have the Tilt 2. I decided to go with InvisibleShield while she wanted a case. After looking at all the comments here about cases not fitting, I decided to go with 2 different ones from Amazon. One fit horribly, so i wont even mention it.
She is using the Tilt2 Praetorian Slip and she loves it. Installation was a little tough as the fit is pretty precise. I suggest installing the top (screen) side first and then the bottom (keyboard). Install both with the KB extended. I have attached pics of the fit.
The only complaint I have (she thinks of it as a feature) is that the cover makes it a little more difficult to slide out the keyboard. She like it because it used to slide open in her purse (mostly because of the fact that she keeps it in an inside pocket of her purse which causes it to hit just right against crap she has in another pocket). Overall, this is a pretty nice cover. I am sure you can get it cheaper than amazon, but I had gift certificates to spend
Hope this helps!
Thanks for the review! I bought the same case a few months ago, although it was advertised as for the Verizon Touch Pro 2. I was unaware they made one for the Tilt 2. Now I won't have to worry about it falling off randomly!
thsi case probably wouldnt work with invisible shield on too huh

Neat.. glad yours fit. I ordered one for the Tilt2 from Amazon as well, and Boxwave sent one labeled 'Touch Pro 2'. I see yours doesn't have a cutout area for the PTT button either, do you have issues with that? My praetorian case would almost always trigger the PTT button whenever I handled the phone.
The top/screen portion of my Praetorian didn't fit right and opening and closing the top was almost impossible - even ended up ripping off the protective plastic along one side of the keyboard. (the protective plastic that is designed to be there, not the temporary stuff it whipped with) I can see just by looking at your pictures that your screen portion fits waay better than mine did.
When I contacted Boxwave about the issues, no questions asked and they sent a postage paid label for the return. I'd love to try this case again, as I did like the feel of it, but nervous about another no-fit. I went with BodyGuardz instead.. not sure I'm happy with those..
Thanks,

Man, sorry you had so many issues. The PTT button is indeed covered, but she has had no issues with it at all (hers is remapped to toggle bluetooth on and off). The fit on the screen portion is *very* tight. Took some effort to get it installed properly.
Also, mine definitely said "Tilt 2" on the packaging.
It is disappointing that it covers the PTT button. I assume your wife has abandoned that function (easily switching BT on/off)?
Thanks for posting reviews on this case -- I'm trying to decide what route to take to give my new Tilt 2 some added protection, and more importantly, cut down on the slickness/smudge magnet-ness of the shiny battery cover (which is my #1 gripe with the GSM TP2, both CDMA versions have rubberized covers which won't fit their GSM siblings due to the placement of the 3.5 mm jack).
I really wish someone made a rubberized battery cover to replace the shiny OEM one. These snap on type cases are okay, but they become a major pain as soon as you need to pop off the battery cover in order to flash a new ROM (as I do often), reset the device, or swap out memory cards. I worry trying to snap-in and pry off these cases frequently will damage the phone -- especially when it's a super snug fit. IMHO, a rubberized battery cover, along with perhaps the upper portion of this case to protect the chrome bezel from getting nicked would be an ideal solution! I may just go down to Home Depot this weekend and see if they have a spray that can rubberize plastic, then I might just buy a spare OEM battery cover and see if I can rubberize it.

Nope, the PTT button still works perfectly under the cover. Does not get accidentally pressed and is responsive when you push it.

Sounds like skinning/shielding your phone with GadgetShieldz might be the way to go. The GadgetShieldz does take a little time to install but it works. The protective film on the screen is easy to install and bubble free. It makes the phone non-slippery. It would not protect the phone like a case but it does prevent scratches. When installed, it adds very little weight and dimension to the phone.
Actually, there are other protective films/shields but I only have experience with GadgetShieldZ. It might work for you.

Just to report on this, I got one of these in the mail yesterday. So far I love it. It wasn't terribly difficult to get on. It fits very well too. My only real complaint is that it doesn't accommodate the PTT button that the Tilt 2 has right next to the volume buttons. It's not a big issue since I don't use PTT and the case doesn't prohibit using the key anyway.
Just be careful and make sure you order the one that specifically says it's for the Tilt 2. They make other models. I know they have the Praetorian on eBay but to be safe I opted to get mine directly from Boxwave. I got what I ordered too and could have used they're return policy if I needed.
Oh...I'll be happy to post pics if anyone wants but I think someone already put some up of this one a Tilt2.

I wish I'd seen your post sooner! Home Depot and Lowe's does indeed have something like that. I'm sure lots of hardware stores do. It's called Plasti-Dip. I have a can right here You can buy it as spray-on or dip/brush-on applications. I use it on mountain bike parts and tools for extra grip. I'm not positive how well it will stick to a slick plastic surface but it is an option.

I ordered one from BoxWave and I think I'm still going to shop around for something else. It seems like the Tilt2 has less options than the other variations of the Rhodium so people may just be settling for this due to "Slim Pickin's."
I like the way the gel gives more texture and grip to the phone, but I still feel uneasy because it's definitely not a snug fit. The part that covers the screen section of the phone is very flimsy and after you get it on, you want to keep checking it to make sure that it is attached; it feels like it can easily slip off at any time. This is specifically evident when you slide your screen up and tilt it. Tap the top right, or the middle section that really has no grip around the phone, and it might just pop off...
I still have it on my phone because it is the lesser of two evils, have something vs. not having something, but are there any other options for the Tilt2?

It's held up quiet nice...even with as much flashing I do (have to remove the bottom piece every time). I've figured out a great way to put it back on that's really fast and easy. Some people say it's difficult to get on. I think the top piece is the hard part but I've taken it off a few times and have no issues there either. It still fits good. If I remember, next time I take it off I'll shoot some pics of how I put it on and upload them.

I haven't really had any trouble with mine popping off. It took a bit to get the top on right and it was a pretty snug fit too. Getting the corner edges all the way tucked under was the hardest part. I'm guessing it's a manufacturing thing. Some say it's a tight fit and other say it's loose. I will agree that the sides on the top piece are flimsy because they're not attached the the phone but if they were it would probably make matters worse by either rubbing against the bottom piece or creating too big of a gap between the two parts of the phone.
I agree there aren't many options for the Tilt 2 and I hate to say it but there probably won't be.

If yours is a snug fit, I wonder if we received the same thing! Did you order from BoxWave? I have a little plastic tool that I used to get the corners onto the top half quickly which was actually made to fit into the creavice of a HTC Dash phone to pop the clips and take the phone apart. It works great and I can see the little flaps around the corner so you can tell the corners of the phone are between the gel lips.. It's still too easy to come off though..
Even though my receipt says "Praetorian Crystal Slip, HTC Tilt2, Smoke Grey - SKU: bw-268-3729-2808", it also says "ITEM: HTC TOUCH PRO2." The Box also has a white sticker in the top right that says "Praetorian Crystal Slip - TOUCH PRO2."
Do you remember if yours said the same? Maybe they somehow shipped me the wrong one?

Yeah I got mine directly from boxwave. They have like 3 different models of that slip. Most of the adds I saw on Amazon and eBay claimed it would fit on 3 or 4 different TP2 models which I knew it wouldn't. I emailed boxwave about the pics in their online catalog because it didn't look like a Tilt 2 to me and they admitted it wasn't. They said they didn't have one for the pics. Which made sense I mean why spend that much just to get pics but they promised it would fit so I figured what the hell. The hard covers kinda suck.
Thanks for the replies, I guess I will go ahead and order it and see what happens.
I just got the unbranded version of this case off ebay (the seller's id was e-story).
It's not too bad on my unbranded TP2. It's slightly more difficult to slide out the keyboard, and when the screen is fully tilted, the top row of keys are slightly obscured, but nothing too major in my opinion.
I like that the case improves the grip of the phone, but I'm also rather concerned that the case will eventually melt under hotter conditions since the material feels rather gummy.

Best / Thinnest (Preferably Clear) Case for G1?

I was searching around and could not find a gel/TPU type clear case for the G1...for those of you who do not know...here is one example of a Nexus One case like what I would want:
http://cgi.ebay.com/2-Soft-Case-TPU...t=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item746a91e417
I know they do not show a completely clear one, but that is the material/type of case I would like. It is not like a typical silicone case -it is slightly like a hard case being that it does not bend as easily and it is not floppy at all.
Any ideas?
Heres the problem that I see...
How would you open the keyboard with that cover overlapping the front of the phone? That would probably be the reason those style covers don't exist for the G1.
As my fellow Oregonian said.. Soft cases and a slide keyboard won't really work.. If you look at the hard shells you'll see how the screen has it's own little part that clips on.. soft shells wrap instead of clip on...
I fail to see why they could not have a separate piece to put on the screen...?
If there is no such case... then could someone recommend a thin, yet tough, hard case? (preferably clear)
soft cases can't clip onto the screen part that has to slide up...
but here's something i found with decent reviews for the other colors.. clear hasn't been rated yet

yea that case is rocking . I as well was looking for something like this! Thanks!! hey erebusting did you order it? did ya like it?
I ordered the clear one, and it came in yellowish like it was old or like someone was smoking around it or something.... the seller gave me a refund because he said they had no more, but I think that all the clear ones were just as yellow ? who knows....
also when you hold the phone in portrait mode on the top right and left corners of the keyboard section the case left a small gap on each side maybe about 1-2 millimeters as if it was slipping off...
Other than all that I liked it, but would not use it because it makes my phone look yellow / ugly... if I had a case like that with these flaws fixed then I would use it.

Can you post some pictures? And would you recommend it? I am looking for a new case for my phone, and this one is one that I am considering
I had this case. I had a screen protector on, and the extra height of the screen protector made the screen portion of the case slip off. If you don't use a screen protector, it might work for you. I bought a Seidio case and never looked back. Super thin, rugged plastic. Comes in black so it blends into the phone.

zinite, I understand that, but see I do also have a screen protector on but the section of the case which goes on the screen is fitting fine, the section for the body is the part I have the complaint about. I will definately check out some Seidio cases now that you have mentioned that.
SolemnWishing, Here are some pictures of the case next to a clear hard case (which is actually clear and not yellow...)
Ace42, glad you got a laugh! haha...BTW I am wondering why you were laughing though, kind of odd to me ATM...
WOW! that case is really yellow. i was thinking about getting one thinking it wont be that yellow. but that is definitely gross smoker yellow
Dang... it looks like someone left that out in the sun for like a year or something..
Guess you know what happens to these cases when you have em for awhile... I've long given up on G1 cases: with a simple screen protector you should be on your way. I love the feel of the back of the G1, and a case would only screw that up.

its really a disappointment since there are no other cases (that I can find that is) like that for the G1...
any other recommendations/ideas?

[Q] 'Original' custom Backcover

Hey guys,
I'm searching for an case for my evo 3d, which doesn't makes it fat. Is there anything which replaces the original battery cover, just with another design? Normal cases you have to put on the original battery cover, what i hate, because the phone becomes in my opinion more fat and heavier.
Is there anything like the thing described above available? And if it is, can I get this in Europe (Germany)?
Personally, I like TPU cases. They don't make the phone too fat. But they do thicken it.
What you're talking about is a good idea, but it wouldn't really offer protection for the corners?
The only thing I can think of right now is one of those Zagg Invisible Shields.
It's like a screen protector that goes on the whole phone.
It offers scratch protection, but for falls, it's not that great.
Well, protection is not that important for me. I just want another backside, maybe I could even design it myself. On my old DHD I had an normal case, and it felt much thicker, what i actually don't like.
Maybe you're looking for something like this?

I can't paint it myself, it would fail so hard when I'd try it, because I am really bad at art^^. Creating an design online isn't possible, or?
EDIT: I just found a website, which offers the possibility to design an own skin for the EVO 3D and other phones. It's like a sticker then I can attach to my phone.

I'm pretty sure there are other websites for it too.
But that one looks good for you since you're in Germany.
Remember it's a sticker though, it'll eventually get damaged. Also, it offers very little protection.

Back cover project (installed cover)

I bought this white back for the phone to see what i could do with it. I took the letters off because they were not stuck on there good. They came off with a dust can.
Decided to paint it a sliver color to match the frame as close as possible. I hand painted the inside of the letters black. I don't know what to do about the "M" yet, if i'm going to put one on there or not. Maybe something else, idk.
This is what I have so far. It looks like it has a brushed look to it. After I painted it, I scuffed it with a dish scrubber to give it that look.
Last thing I do, will be spray a satin clear.
That thread title though.
Looks good.

Definitely a cool option to have something unique like that.
This does look cool. But I wonder what kind of spray paint you used and even more importantly what kind of clear coat are you going to use to withstand bending? When one removes and puts back on one has to bend this cover a bit and I'm not sure how well will paint and coat withstand this?

This does look cool. But I wonder what kind of spray paint you used and even more importantly what kind of clear coat are you going to use to withstand bending? When one removes and puts back on one has to bend this cover a bit and I'm not sure how well will paint and coat withstand this?

I used rust-o-leum paint and clear. I'm not worried about the bending. I'm taking this one off in the next few days.
I started another one with a different silver. I wont be reusing the current one.
FYI they make paint for plastic (bendable) it's mostly for bumpers on cars
I took the cover off earlier and the paint held up very well, i didnt bend the cover a whole lot to begin... i wasnt going to use it again so i decided it to test how much bend it would take and i had to bend it a lot in order for the paint to wrinkle.
I tried doing something similar for my daughter that got bored by the same old phone sleeve/case that was partially clearly transparent and partially frosted look.
I decided to paint the frosted part using RAL 9005 matte black spray paint. I haven't clear coated it yet as it was just an experiment. If it turns out to be ok I may coast it using some not so rigid coat to avoid cracking due to the rubbery nature of this sleeve.
She likes the end result. Me too. Unfortunately I'm not able to add images to my posts (haven't posted enough posts to XDA - apparently)

How did you stick the back cover back on?
I'm curious to know what you used to stick the cover on with.
The reason I ask is that my first Nexus 6 came with the cover unstuck right out of the box. I returned it (partly because I was worried that the battery may have swelled) but I'd be interested to know how hard it would have been to stick the cover back down again.

Uuhm... i had thought the idea of seeing more than one back cover in some of the more recent photo's would have indicated it... but also in the first post he says he bought a white back cover a while ago to see what he could do with it. He didn't remove and replace the same back cover. Pretty sure that's NOT possible due to the adhesive... or at least risks the ability to put it back on firmly and smoothly.

imatch OnePlus 6T case

This case looks promising, but I don't know. It has no reviews anywhere, and was only featured for an old Samsung s6. If anyone on here has it or wants to try it let me know. It comes with glass screen protector, and it's apparently all screwed in. The pricetag is also sort of hefty so idk.

Id be worried about cell reception with all that aluminum. If you get it be sure to do a before and after signal test for us.
Learned my lesson with aluminum cases, it ALWAYS affects signal.

I'm actually sending mine back this week. It's just way too impractical. The screen protector it comes with is very cheap so I didn't bother. It's also one of those cases that covers the bottom speaker and routes it to fire forward. I don't like that. You have to unscrew everything just to put the phone in and out and the metal frame, the way it rests on the phone, it doesn't give me a lot of confidence. In fact, I'm afraid it could help put enough pressure on the display to crack it with the way it's designed. Maybe I'm being too paranoid but it's not worth the risk, IMO.
Also, the little pin/lever thing on the side that's meant to move your volume slider? It doesn't work. I have to use two fingers to move both ends at the same time but it doesn't move the slider. Only the plastic pins move. So forget about being able to adjust the volume slider above the power button.
The case in general is just too bulky. I'm a pretty big guy and this case still feels too bulky and awkward to hold. It reminds me of the early days of Otterbox cases when they wanted to promote this "tank" protection-level mentality but today as you can see they've slimmed down and become more practical.
They're keeping about $7 for returning it, regardless of Prime or what return method you choose. FYI.
