Noob, help needed please. - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi, i just got my archos 70 today and i've read the threads around this forum and figured out that i cant remove apps(bloatware) that are in system/app because they are protected etc. i also figured out that the only way to have freedom with this device was through the custom rom in this forum but only installed through SDE. The only questions i've got are, is there any way to boot straight into SDE mode or straight into the custom rom rather than pressing power and -vol. 2 can i remove the bloatware through android commander or something similar. I'm just looking for something to remove these apps or have a clean rom because i seem to have dead links such as the manual, online registration etc

Do you mind if you loose your warranty?
Go through this thread, I think it will answer most of your questions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978492

thanks for your reply.no i don't mind about the warranty.i've read the thread but i didn't notice anywhere written about removing the apps or booting straight to urukdroid rom. root explorer doesn't remove any apps even titanium backup.

Are you REALLY sure that removing a few small apps is worth voiding your warranty??? Seriously?
You might want to think of other good reasons to root your device beyond that. Just a suggestion.

it doesn't have a warranty because the person that gave it to me bought it from someone and i couldn't register it because it was already registered with someone.i emailed archos and they said they couldn't do anything. but the useless apps really bug me and the fact that i've downloaded launcher pro and everytime i press home button it keeps asking which launcher i want to use.

Click the checkbox that says "always perform this action" and select Launcher Pro. Then it won't keep asking which launcher to use.

Have you or anyone tested the rom to verify this? While a new rom with extra would be great, I wouldn't want to waste time downloading something that didn't improve my phone but on the other hand I'd like several people to give an opinion after installing the rom to verify it works or doesn't work.
Ive got it on my phone just now and while the OP is correct, it is full of pirated apps but with its JIT enabled the bloody thing flies lol.
Marketplace is fine for me so far.
I must admit im a bit disappointed as well and will be reverting back to my old backup for now till something better comes along.
I tried it too, and finally restored to do same modifications myself, due to some bugs : physical keyboard in qwerty (was AZERTY, impossible to come back), no more Sym/àü, ...
Done in 2 hours.
I actually went back to his ROM due to the speed difference.
I also installed Titanium Backup to get rid of some of the crap he installed which cant normally be uninstalled.
I use Fancy Widget Pro but the Taskiller hes installed keeps killing it
You need the Titanium Pro version though to uninstall stuff.

You can download the Titanium Pro using the Applanet, but yes, it's warez...
Or you can uninstall the Taskiller using the Root Explorer (just go to system/app and remove the app you don't want).
Or you can add the Fancy Widget Pro to the list of exceptions of the Taskiller.

Try adding an icon of the Taskiller to a dock of the Launcher Pro. That's what I did.

Good idea, never thought of that lol
No matter anyway as i uninstalled it
or use advanced task killer, which lets you put it on ignore.
You can also improve speed, as well as battery life, by deleting a lot of the "sony ericsson" crap found under "backup" when opening titanium. Additionally, delete SE's "home" if you don't use it and any language packs under "system/user/keyboard-config" and "system/usr/zi"
I've also erased bluetooth, GPS, maps and text to speech (since i don't use them) without any problem.
Other tips for saving space -
Delete unecessary ringtones, alarms etc... under system/media/audio
Delete unecessary wallpaper from system/etc/customization/content/com/sonyericsson/homescreen/wallpaper
Delete boot animation (sorry, can't remember where this was)
Of course this isn't for averyone but personally I like a slimmed down, respnsive phone
Any way of getting the stock SMS/MMS back?
Cant stand the delay with notifications in Handcent

I'm no expert. But I suspect that this issue could be caused by a bloatware app that is necessary for that action but was moved. Did you manually remove your bloat or did you use a ROM to do it for you?

that is possible.....I really didn't delete bloatware apps...just renamed a few.....do you know which bloatware app controls this function so I can check?

I would THINK the safest bet for you is to back up your current apps with titanium and then back up your current ROM in nandroid and re-flash. I mean its a simple solution and requires a bit of time but unless you know exactly what you are looking for (and I am sure someone could tell you on this website) then you are more likely to cause more harm to your phone.
Sorry I can't be more help.
edit: also renamed, deleted, moved the apps. Pretty much all the same thing. The phone is looking for something and is not finding it where it should be. At least this is what I assume gleaning off the error you posted.

I can do all that......but..even if I backup my current rom and apps with titanium.....the program that I renamed will still be there......don't think a fresh download of Perfect Storm will help..
thank you very much for helping!!
Voice search. Doesn't that control it?
I pretty much deleted everything
Im,news,wheather,stocks,Widgets(that are unnecessary)
I think the probably is. The fact that renamed them. And the system cannot find the name. System tells the user basically I cannot find the other file. Thats my hypothesis.

Super N00b with some basic questions GAAHH! :)

Hello,
I was told this is the place to come for everything related Galaxy S III from several people. Please excuse me if this is the wrong place or section.
I'm completely new to the Galaxy 3 and Android in general.
I'm on sprint and I've had the Palm Pre since launch, I just got my GS3 yesterday (amazon $149 no tax, free 2 day shipping) :victory:
As you can imagine coming form the Pre, my mind is blown. It's a bit overwhelming, I'm a pretty tech-savvy dude (pre was hacked to its limits) so I down to tinker. But before I even get started with that I have some basic questions.
1. Is there a way to only use a password unlock once per phone power-on instead of every time the screen locks?
1a Even better would be able to use a simple pin for screen unlock but still have the SD/Internal encrypted with a long password. Is that possible?
2. When I press back, how do I know if an app has been killed? I keep getting the feeling it still somehow running in the background?
3. Is the application manager like the Windows process manager? How do I know what are essential system apps and what can be stopped?
4. What is the best way to get rid of bloatware?
5. What are the diffrent system updates? PRL, Profile, Samsung Software, Firmware?
6. Why is there "com.sec.sprextension.phoneinfo.D..." under Device administrator? Do I need that? Is that a security hole/risk?
Again, sorry for so many questions, just trying to wrap my head around all of this. If there is a better place to be asking question please let me know.
Look forward to being part of the community! :highfive:
BR
1) not by default, maybe an app could aid there, not sure, but on stock "out of the box" the answer is "no"
1a) nope, if you want to use encryption, it's password all the way
2) Settings -> Application Manager -> "Running" tab
3) Kind of. It also warns you when you try to kill off a system app, but you can't really damage anything by doing that. I tend to kill just everything I don't want at the moment (which is usually everything but the widgets and app I am intentionally running) and all is well.
Stuff that REALLY needs to run, restarts automatically anyways (and some that don't have to, do as well....)
4) Settings -> Application Manager -> All -> Tap on app -> "Disable"
5) You will find an uncountable number of ROMs / Firmwares here. Stock as well as custom. What the best one is, is personal preference.
6) might be something added by the carrier. try to disable it, see what happens
7) ( ) .... ( ) whoops, no 7 xD
Hope that helped a bit

You most certainly are in the wrong forum. This one is for the international S3 which doesn't feature LTE. There's a Sprint forum right above/below this one =)

That would make password unlock more or less redundant. Anyone could still access the phone.
When I press back, how do I know if an app has been killed? I keep getting the feeling it still somehow running in the background?

You're correct. Well, partially. It's still "alive" in terms of being in the memory. But it doesn't use CPU anymore which is all that counts.
However you don't want to kill it. Cached processes take up no space (the RAM is emptyed whenever the capacity is needed), no resources and allow you to multi-task right back to where you left off.
Is the application manager like the Windows process manager? How do I know what are essential system apps and what can be stopped?

You don't want to stop anything. Refer to the prior question for this. Well... you may want to kick off some bloatware but to get rid of thm the phone needs to be rooted. There are threads listing which apps you can safely remove.
What is the best way to get rid of bloatware?

As said, you need to be rooted. Use TItanium Backup to freeze the bloatware. It's still physically "there" on the disk (doesn't take up much space) and you can defrost it whenever needed but as long as it's frozen it cannot be started.
What are the diffrent system updates? PRL, Profile, Samsung Software, Firmware?

App updates are always delivered through their corresponding market. Usually the Google Play Store, but as for Samsung apps they have their own update mechanism.
Firmware and ROM are updated either OTA or through Kies on the computer. They can also be manually flashed through Odin.

Sounds like some carrier bloatware and from the name of it is supposed to open some file extension called '.spr' for the phone.
Thank you for the info! Mods could you please move to correct forum?

Stock Apps that are safe to remove

Now that we have root I'm sure ROMS will start being developed, but in the mean time does anyone have a list of apps that are safe to remove from the stock ROM? I'd like to do a little de-bloating while we wait for more ROM choices.
Also, I loaded up "Root Browser Lite" so I can browse to /system/app and delete the apk files there - is this the best way to get rid of the apps that don't allow themselves to be un-installed?
root uninstaller will let you freeze system apps or uninstall them if you wish to do so
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rootuninstaller.free&hl=en
as for a list, I don't have one sorry, I just froze all the ones I knew for sure wouldnt mess with anything

First off, you're in the wrong forum to ask a question. Secondly, two posts down from yours is the script for removing bloatware, which includes a text file which contains the list of files that can be safely removed. Please put a little more effort into looking for your answer before asking it next time, and make sure you ask it in the Questions subforum. Thank you.
To answer your other question, I personally use Root Explorer (paid app) to remove stock apps and do anything involving files on my phone. I create a folder, '/data/app.disabled/', and put the apps from '/data/app/' that I don't want in there, in case I want/need them again or the phone breaks without them.
Also, if you're worried you'll break your phone by deleting or moving them, you can freeze just about all the stock apps in Settings -> Apps, or use Titanium Backup to freeze them.

Yes, I did find that and read it. I was hoping for an even more extensive list, but I'll experiment myself.
Actually, I discovered (via Google) that in ICS you can go to the "All" tab in Manage Apps and have the option to disable almost all of them. This seems to not only keep them from running but also takes them out of the Apps drawer - and it works without root. Surprised Verizon hasn't found and fixed that
And sorry for the breach of etiquette in the original post - I considered it to be a "Development" topic (in the form of a question?) and wasn't sure if the Development crowd watched the General Q&A forum.

You didn't need to go to Google, because I included that in my original reply, which takes you to the same place. Also, it's the first trick in my 'Tips and Tricks' thread, which is linked in my signature.
And around here, most of the development crowd currently does look at all the forums. It's not a large community yet, so there's not usually a lot new to sift through in the course of a day.

[Q] How to remove annoying message "clear default app settings by going to settings"

[Q] How to remove annoying message "clear default app settings by going to settings"
Hello guys
Since JB on SGS3, my phone KEEPS asking me to set defaults for the same things, really bloody annoying.
"Clear defaults
Clear default app settings by going to settings > applications manager > all"
An utter pain in the arse. Anyone found a way to make Touchwiz remember defaults or to stop giving this newbie bollocks message?
I'd love some brainy hacker to make it gooo away!

Mark.
Titanium -> backup/restore -> TouchWiz -> freeze
Make sure you have a proper launcher already loaded, like ADW/Nova etc.

thanks mate, i will try that!
i am thinking though, wouldnt freezing touchwiz also stop the (FANTASTIC) features of samsung, like the "stay on" feature and the excellent Samsung Calendar? Major reasons why I would never go back to Cyanogenmod.

NOPE!
after a reboot it is back to square one, the message comes up again.
there has got to be a way to make the system remember that stuff, surely?!
EDIT
not quite square one... it seems files I have opened before using a specific app will continue to work with that app automatically, but if I, for example, open a pdf document in Maildriod and tell it to open with Adobe reader, then click on the same PDF in the GMail app, it will ask me again... so it seems to be based on the app it is coming FROM and not the type of link/file you are clicking on. Pretty daft IMO.

No, Samsung apps are independent of TouchWiz and will work with any launcher.
The only repeating request for default I've experienced is when I left TouchWiz in after I'd added ADW - it came up after each boot to ask which launcher I wanted and then ignored the 'always' bit. After I frozen TouchWiz it's all working as expected, opening each file type responds with the app I've chosen to use with it (from the launcher).
I just tried the exact test you describe, opening a .pdf in two apps. After I'd set the option from each app it remembers the setting - but it just doesn't appear to be a system wide setting, like it would be in Windows.
If it keeps asking the same question from the same app then you may have a problem, otherwise I think it's just the way JB works.

I will check, though my nexus 10 tablet NEVER has a message telling me that I can clear default app settings... so it's not a google thing but a samsung one.
I will see over a week or so if it does remember, though i guess with each rom update I have to enter all the bloody defaults again... one of the down sides of customising rom's frequently.
cheers
Mark.

Not for me, I cannot get that message to stop, My phone remembered no defaults before root or since. In fact rooting was the biggest waste of time I can think of, its changed nothing
why did you root if you didn't know what you needed it for?
