My atrix seems to have a problem with the touch screen on the top portion of the phone when I'm in portrait mode. For example, when I go into settings, I can't seem to click on wireless network settings.
I thought it may have been a problem with an app I had installed, so I turned on advanced task killer, but I couldn't click on kill all running apps since it's in that non functioning top portion of my screen. Lol
Now I'm here on the xda app and I couldnt click on the top portion to go to my favorite threads.
Obviously I've already done a power cycle a couple times. Sometimes it fixes it, but it doesn't fix it for long as the problem seems to randomly come back...
I'm considering doing a factory reset, but I'm rooted with designgears aroot script. I already thawed all the apps I've froze. Would it be OK to factory reset from there?
If anyone has any suggestions aside from doing a factory reset, it will be very much appreciated!

Same thing here. Sometimes the widgets i have at the top of the screen won't respond when touched. Also my screen shifts back and forth on its own in portrait mode, kind of jiggles like the phone is being shaken. I unrooted, did a factory reset and still no joy. I'm going to flash the retail SBF tonight and see if that clears it up. If not back AT&T for a replacement or the HTC Inspire. (I'm still in my 30 day window)
I have the same problem.. I have done a hard reset, but it doesn't seem to fix it
I will try to flash DG's retail SBF today.
flashing the device didn't fix the issue
I ended up getting mine exchanged. Its strange that it only started to happen randomly.

Might want to double check and post in this thread: https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/362154/
Thanks, Reuben. I'm sorry to see that people are having this problem. I have the same problem but from the bottom of my touch screen. We've identified that when this happens, it's because the Internal SD was partitioned. Not sure what's causing the issue with the top of the screen for users though.
I sure hope a fix is rolled out. Many people have imported their Atrix's and it's hell trying to exchange it. I'd rather be able to just fix it!
This happened to my first atrix: bought the day after realease, problem developed withing 36 hours, I'd say.
At the time, I didn't think much of the issue (though it was simply unacceptable) and discounted mine as an inevitable lemon. Obviously, when I took it back (literally within 3 days of release) nobody had had this problem yet and the sales rep was baffled. Got an exchange and all is well now.
I believe it has something to do with a defective fingerprint reader that mucking with the screen, but I could be wrong.
Ultimately, my phone is fine now, haven't had a problem since the exchange. I would actually argue against it being a developing problem and, while it may take a couple days to manifest, more so an out of the box defect.
I'm glad I found this and it's not just me! I've had this phone a little over a week and it WAS running awesome but now not so much. I have more of the ghost finger or studder I've heard about. I found most of the issues texting and emailing or anything with typing. The rest of the time it works fine. Just really hard to respond quickly by any means.
It was running fine stock, then I rooted and it continued to run fine. Then over the last few days it's been a headache. I removed the root, still there, factory default, still there. It was even happening when I was trying to log into motoblur at the very beginning.
I'm going with a hardware issue and taking it in for replacement tomorrow.
Thanks.
It seems like you'll have to replace it, brother. No fix found yet.
Damn! I knew I should have returned it during my 30days... I was really under the impression that it was just something I did coz I didn't notice it when I first got it and went ahead and rooted it... tried almost everything too like everybody did but no luck
Do you think I'll still be able to exchange it? I got it like 2 months ago
Replaced mine yesterday and it is running great. The guy at AT&t said he has seen a few doing this.
Did you have to call the warranty service also or were you able to exhange it at the store coz in my case I had to call the warranty service and they're sending me a replacement in the mail with the prepaid packaging to send to my old one back
I just went in, he opened a new one swaped my sim card and I was off. Gave me a new receipt and done.

Hello. i've been having this problem in my atrix for about a month now. it seems to be hardware related but im outside USA. i could send it in with my gf to get it exchanged but i bought it on ebay.
should i contact motorolla for warranty or go to att to get it replaced?
(please provide a # or website for motorolla warranty if you know it)
I have same problem, hapened after 2 months of use, the top portion of the screen doesnt work, if im in portrait i cant scroll down the notification bar, only in landscape. And when in landscape i cant type the letter Q.
Really annoying, but i have to wait until september when i came back to USA.
Motorola Brazil dont honor the warranty from a Usa Atrix.
For everyone thats experiencing this Screen Issue with the Atrix, SGS Touchscreen Booster inthe Market Place will fix the issue. I have returned one Atrix already, and was close to throwing this one in the garbage. It makes me mad that Motorola has this issue and are not pushing a Software Fix. Can't wait until I can get Cyanogen on this beast!
**Update Sent my phone in to get repaired, they replaced the screen and reflashed it. Came back with the exact same issue. Very Frustrated!
My motorola atrix is a problem with the touch after I managed to release "root", you have to play lower down the keys to be hit from above, in addition to the menu buttons do not work, but half of it straight up works best, does anyone have any solution?
Perhaps a better bios reset, or a full format! hardware will be? or software?
Somebody help!

Hi guys, I could really use some help.
I've a T-Mobile G2 variant which was running a stock HTC Sense ROM. I started getting weirdness happening on it though - the home screen moving on it's own - switching between pages and back again, pressing any buttons apart from the power button just switched the home screens to the thumbnail view. Dialogue boxes refused to let me press the okay or cancel buttons, and texting became impossible - key presses deciding for themselves what they thought I was pressing. Rebooting the phone made little difference, and I tried re-calibrating several times, but this only helped for a short time before it all went again.
Just before Christmas I decided to flash a new ROM, deciding upon the Froyo 2.2.1 final from Elelinux. I have the same problem though, and it's right annoying.
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?
Apps I currently have installed are:
Google Sky Map
Jewels
Google Scoreboard
Shazam
Sky+
Superuser
Terminal Emulator
WiFi Analyzer
The phone is almost 18 months old, but had been working perfectly until recently - around the same time I installed Angry Birds (which I uninstalled assuming it to be the cause).
Well i had this behavior as well. You need to change your digitizer as your screen has become unresponsive. I tried to fix it myself following the guidelines in the according thread in General and ended up breaking my camera lens.
So what i am suggesting is you get it to an HTC Repair store and let them fix it under warranty. Mine is as good as new now.
Unfortunately sounds like an issue with the digitizer in the screen, which can be repaired but isn't a simple job. The fact that touching the screen anywhere shows the preview suggests the screen is already registering a touch (hence broker digitizer). Don't spose you have an extended warranty or insurance for a replacement?
Hi there,
I've changed mine a month ago, it has cost me about 40€ and was made in 30min with the official tutorial from Htc that you can find on youtube. It was yes.. Really eaaasy ;-)
gruß,
H.
Thanks for the replies - I had hoped it would be software, although I kinda knew it would be hardware. I've got a monthish left on my contract, so I don't think it'll be in warranty, see if I can hang on without it :/
Isn't HTC giving 2 year of warranty for hardware? I've still got a year to go in mine.
mine's not from HTC - it's a T-Mobile one (albeit from a 3rd party supplier), and T-Mobile warranties are usually rubbish from my experience.
Well you won't lose anything by trying. Get in touch and bust their balls so you can get your digitizer changed. It's a hardware fault, not yours. I was treating mine very very well and still it broke after 9 months of use.
Get them to change it, it's not your fault they use crap material to make them.
from what you've said, Id say its maybe more likely to be a trackball issue, which probably doesn't make much of a difference to you, but might be slightly easier to fix

He cannot type a message because letters type themselves in, it's clearly a digitizer problem, not a trackball issue i'm afraid.
Reflashed stock T-Mobile ROM this morning - hopefully I can get to my local T-Mobile shop at lunchtime to get them to fix it. Thanks for all your help.
and then I returned. T-Mobile said there was a long processing time for repairs at the moment, and they had no loan phones I could use whilst mine was away. Did say I could upgrade early though which was nice. Spent my lunch hour trying out several new phones (including a couple of nokias, sorry). Came back with a Motorola Defy, and a still broken Hero.
Is my fascinate defective? Why does my back button randomly press itself? In fact, it seems like it's doing it as a long press sometimes since pressing the power button takes a random screen shot!
I've posted about this before, but this issue came from EB01. Surely others are experiencing such a thing!
This happened to me on stock DI01. I don't know why, but all of a sudden one day, it started doing those phantom presses. For me it was the back button and menu button. I also had a hard time long-pressing the home button to pull up the recent app list.
I have insurance through Verizon, so I just took it into the store, and they ordered a refurbished replacement for me. I didn't have to turn in my phone until the new one came.
It's a different story if you go directly to Samsung. Through them, you are without your phone for 6 days (2 days shipping there, 2 days repair, and 2 days shipping back), and no temporary phone is provided. I was only going to do that as a last resort, but Verizon actually came through.
The end result is that the new phone is definitely better, and I can tell there's a difference in the button response - not in a bad way, though. It's a more "solid" experience as opposed to the previous phone being more finicky.
I have this same issue as well, and have had it pop up on me well before EB01. It's not all the time, but it happens often enough that it's annoying as hell.
Anyone happen to know of a software based solution? Considering all of the rooting/etc. I've done to my phone, I don't know how feasible it is to get replacement hardware..

I believe that if you were to odin back to stock (or any official OTA update) that they wouldn't know you'd ever been rooted.
Superclean 2.4 Voodoo - VA Green
I have the same issue. In fact, it just happened a few minutes ago. Sometimes it only had one phantom press, other times it will go spastic. When the latter happens I have to press the back button to make it stop.
I'm glad I'm not the only with this issue. Looks like I'm calling for a replacement tomorrow.

That's what I did. I was rooted and removed a bunch of the VZW bloat when I first started seeing it. I ended up flashing an Odin package for stock/unrooted DI01 onto the phone to make sure that rooting didn't cause the problem. It still ended up happening on stock. I took it in to Verizon and had them look at it, and they were none the wiser. It's been a couple of months now, and I've heard nothing about my returned phone.
Both the DI01 and DL09 Odin packages should be available in the development forum. Be sure to disable voodoo (if you are using it) before you use Odin.

I just hate the idea of getting a refurbished phone. I sure hope this is a software issue.
Doesnt verizon insurance go through asurion or something like that
Blue Super Froyo
Verizon should be quite familiar with this problem at this point. This problem ran wild on the OG Moto Droid. I've had family members return their phones and within the first year get replacements per warranty (factory defect).
The problem stems from either using a charger that doesn't have a USB module (aka doesn't require you to plug the USB data cable into a charger brick) or from improperly plugging in your phone (for instance, not putting the phone in a dock completely or having the USB connection slip partially). The unusual changes in voltage kill these smartphones and cause them to almost short-circuit, resulting in the "ghost" phenomenon. Many people have had this problem within the last couple of years and have found this to be the culprit. Just google "Ghost Droid" for more information.

Verizon's insurance does go through Asurion. That's not what I did, however. I told Verizon I didn't want to make an Asurion claim (which comes with a $89 deductible). They said I could go through them for the Samsung warranty. They sent me the replacement and then I sent back my phone (like you do when you make an Asurion claim), but there was do deductible or charge for it.
Now, they might have only said this because I have the extra protection through them. I can't guarantee they will do this for everybody.

Your phone comes with a 1 year warranty from Samsung for hardware issues. Assurion picks up if the user damages the phone, like dropping it or water damage.
Update for anyone following this thread..
I got a replacement phone and restored via nandroid, ensuring identical software. The phantom button presses are gone! So, it seems the button presses are indeed a hardware failure, not software related. If you have phantom button presses, get a replacement phone and save yourself some grief.
Cheers

Dammit. I assumed it was software since this only started happening when I switched to froyo. The kernel is buggy and I figured this would go away once the devs bring us ones from proper source.
I guess my days of not safely removing from PC are catching up to me.

The only thing I've noticed on my phone is my power/sleep button sometimes randomly takes screen shots instead of going to sleep, which I thought I read was the back key sticking, is this similar to what everyone is experiencing with these phantom button presses? Mine isn't backing out of programs or anything?
I've had these phantom button presses on mine on and off since I got the phone. Even before I rooted it. I always assumed it was because the soft keys were dirty/oily and were incorrectly registering touches. Wiping off my phone has always taken care of the problem.
My fascinate has infrequently done this over the last several months. Today, the stupid thing started pressing the back button every few seconds. Rebooted several times. No improvement. Switched kernels. No improvement.
I decided to try to see if this is software or hardware. Rebooted to CWR and left it setting on one of the options. Right now it has been setting for about 10+ min and no random back buttons have been pressed. My thinking is, if this is a hardware bug it should have selected the highlighted option since the back button is used as the select in CWR.
Anyone have any ideas?
I think I might try a clean reload starting from the stock ODIN when I get home.
Phone is rooted and running SC 2.9 Voodoo Kernel, voodoo disabled.
I have this issue really bad ever since upgrading to Gingerbread...
If I use Odin to flash back to the Stock Verizon 2.2 the issue disappears, but if I flash any gingerbread, doesn't matter if its VGB or one of the CM7 nightlies, the phone presses the back and menu button pretty consistently and also if you remove the battery for any reason at all, it loses or forgets a lot of apps that you may have installed (Live Wallpapers for instance) and also takes 3-5 reboots or power down cycles to finally boot up NOT in Safe Mode.
Not sure what the hell is going on, but I may have to just Odin back to Verizon stock 2.2, root it and live with the bloatware
Oh, and this issue is persistent from my original Fascinate to the refurbished replacement that Verizon just sent me. So either they sent me a refurbished phone that has the exact same symptoms or its an issue with Gingerbread and the Fascinate.
Any suggestions?
Anybody? Bueller?
Could my stock Samsung 16gb memory card be causing this? That's the only thing that was carried over from my old phone that had the button press issues to the new refurbished one.
Has anybody made that correlation?
Bump,
Googling about this problem, it seems this is a wide spread problem with Fascinate and few other Samsung phones. No one knows of the real problem nor a fix.
It is unacceptable for Samsung not handle this problem which sounds like it's hardware related for this long.
Any more input guys?
I was about to buy the Samsung Fascinate myself but this sounds like a major problem to me.
So heres the story, My Mom was due for an upgrade. We researched and researched until we were about MAD. And we finally decided on the Droid x2. She finally recieved it in the mail today and we got it activated. The thing is buggy as mess. You can simply unlock the phone and it randomly brings menus, the internet browser, and apps up at will. It brings up the power off and Air plane mode options when the power button has not even been touched. Heck, it even pulls up the Calender app when you click on the Market Application. She is very dissapointed and we don't know what to do. Should she:
1. Maybe wait for an OTA that addresses these issues?
2. Do a factory reset?
3. Return the phone and get a refurb/different phone?

Return the phone and get another brand new one. There's definitely something wrong with the touch screen. You can try a factory reset first, if you like.
Indeed - Do #2 while calling Verizon for a #3 replacement. It sounds like you got a seriously screwy X2!

EDIT: NEVERMIND!!! UGH..
Definitely exchange it. Sounds like you got a bad phone. The X2 should not be acting like that at all.
you still have a problem / issues

Ok guys its all good now. I got on the phone with Verizon and they told me to take it to my local Verizon store for a replacement. Exactly what was happening to my Mom's DX2. Phone was imputing commands when the screen was not being touched. Took it up to Verizon and it worked beautifully for the guy. We waited till the manager came and she got us a replacement. Its working great.
Well i have had it up to my ears in these replacements. Im really getting to know the fedex guy. while i was seeing if anyone else had these problems the phone screen started going glitchy on me. It was blinking and went to the dialer and the browser just sitting on my desk. I think there is only one alternative to this. The customer service manager will call me tomoro to check if i have everything working. I can almost guarantee it will not be. either she exchanges it for something else with a 4.3 inch screen. they told me that it can only be exchanged for something in the same range and they offered me a vortex. I dont know how they even compare in the same universe. I think ill complain enough and go to the store and see about getting another phone, or i will just take my business over to sprint (which they can see from their store in the mall) and get a nexus or an evo. Im tired of this replace after replace bull. Anyone else have these thoughts?
Hey guys,
I ve recently started having trouble with the Touchscreen on my Evo 3D. The phone is fully rooted and S-Off, currenlty has Leedroid ROM 3.0.
Ive noticed that sometimes it will just stop responding. I press the power button to turn the screen off and back on again, then it works fine.
Other times it will be as if the screen has already been touched in 1 place (even though i havent touched the screen). If i touch the screen it detects a second finger and tries to pinch zoom.
Recently its gotten worse and now certain parts of the screen wont work at all, but other parts work perfect. For example, i can pull the notification bar down or even use the capacitive buttons at the bottom (Home, Menu, Back & Search).
The phone has never been dropped, I have removed screen protector and case, removed apps, defaulted phone, tested different ROMs, and removed the battery for a while. Nothing has helped and im only surviving right now by using Softkeys.
Has anyone seen this, or know what it could be?
Haven't had this problem myself but something to try would be to calibrate thr screen threw the phone options snd see if that helps at all.
Locked & Loaded
""shooter on Deck""
Long time lurker, first time poster, so pardon the n00b.
I am having the same issue. I was using Revolution HD (which is a phenomenal ROM if I say so myself), and a week or two ago my phone started having that issue. I thought possibly a ROM issue, but things had been running smooth for awhile, so it seems odd that it would just start happening out of the blue.
I uninstalled apps, and wiped my phone and reinstalled the ROM, and nothing seemed to fix the issue. I finally re-locked my phone yesterday, put stock ROM back on and still had the issues. I took it in to Sprint today and they said it was because the phone had outdated software and they updated it. The only thing I saw updated was the PRL, so I'm thinking they are full of it. I should have checked for updates before bringing it in, because then they wouldn't have been able to bring that up as an issue.
They also tried to blame some apps as potentially the issue, but I'm basically at stock with minimal added apps. The apps I'm using are ones that I've used since I first had the phone. Perhaps an update of one of those apps is causing the issue.
I'm gonna run it on stock for a day or two and see if the issue is resolved by whatever update they did. I will then put HD Revolution back on and see what happens.
If you figure something out, please post again. My issues sounds exactly like yours. Doesn't sound like a ROM issue, since you and I are using different ROMs. Maybe a manufacturer defect, but I wonder if we have a common app causing the issue.
Update: Have tried the HTC Touchscreen Calibrator here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378142
No change at first. Then i re-calibrated the screen but this time touched below the designated targets (purposely putting the alignment slightly out). Now im able to pull the notification bar down! Meaning it thinks im touching part of the screen where the notification bar is when in fact im touching just below it. "Touch Test" from the Market is a great app for testing this.
Could this be a fault with certain parts of the digitizer?
I know digitizers can be found easily enough and theres videos on youtube, but has anyone actually replaced one or think it will help???
@gonzodog: How is yours looking? Do you think you can give this a try aswell?
I downloaded the calibration tool and will test over the next few hours. My screen issue doesn't seem quite as bad as yours. Turning on and off the screen usually resolves the issue ans it doesn't happen all the time.
I went back to Sprint to show the update he ran didn't work. He 'thinks' it is an HTC issue. I am am looking for a good AOSP Rom to try to see if it is a sense issue. The Sprint rep said he has the same issues on his phone.
I am new to Android (coming from webOS) so I am not used to having so many options for an OS, so I don't know which ROM I'm going to flash.
I saw another post in this forum by someone with similar sounding issues, starting to think it really may be a software issue and not a defect in the phone.
I'll let you know how it goes after the calibration.
I have this issue lately no matter what rom I run.. been running custom rom's now for Month's and this just started..can't seem to figure it out..it just gets stuck and the notification window will not pull down or it will think I want to copy and paste during a text, do goofy things while dialing etc....then I have to hit the power button to simply turn screen off and on..then all is good again...seems to be getting worse and I have used every wipe, rom etc..not sure what to do.
Someone else suggested it was a multi touch issue. Could an app cause that?
I have very few apps on my phone, since I reset to stock. Maybe I will remove the the ones I have downloaded and see what happens. I want to think the issue is caused by an app, maybe one that was recently updated.
My non stock apps are: tapatalk, barcode scanner, google authenticator, tasker, words free, godville, ringcentral, yahoo fantasy football, SwiftKey x, and Google+. Do you all use any common apps?

I'm having this issue as well. I'm loving the change in sprint policy making me go to a repair center just to get the run around. It's a bit silly that they can't hand me a new one. I'm well within my year manufacturer warranty and have insurance. I'm hoping that this issue can be tracked down. From my perspective as a former cell phone repair tech, I'm banking on defective digitizers that are wearing out or wearing in a strange manner to produce this effect. I've tried multiple roms, sense and aosp and still have the problem.
I have an unlocked evo (no carrier) full stock and it happens to me too.. Specially the "o" and "i" letters on keyboard.. It doesn't always happens but when it does is just a matter of seconds till it's ok again..

@gonzodog: I dont actually use any of the apps. Even when i flashed a stock ROM, the fault occurred.
This seems more and more likely that its parts of the digitizer at fault....

@ronin201085 If it is the digitizer, then the question is how to get Sprint to replace it. I may try a different Sprint store today and suggest a digitizer issue. I have insurance, so my preference would be fore Sprint to repair it. I did see that replacement digitizers are available via ebay for about $20, but I'd rather not pay to fix something when I have insurance.
honestly if you are covered under insurance then have they repair it for you... its too risky to replace the digitizer yourself, especially seeing as there are no good tear down videos available that show us how to separate the touchscreen and digitizer from the main body... suffering from the same problem
I have the same problem man.. sprints customers service blows, I have taken it down there twice and they still wont do anything because I can't "duplicate" the issue. And also, for me turning the screen off and on fixes the issue.

Same problem here. Took it to my local sprint store and they replaced the screen no questions asked, although I did have to unroot it before they would touch it. The way I showed them that the defective digitizer was the culprit was downloading the app touch test from the market. That got their attention. A whole section of my screen wasn't registering input.
@3vo kid: I really don't care to replace myself, but I have taken it to Sprint twice, and both times they said it was a software issue. I was able to replicate the issue in the store, still didn't help. I am going to try a different Sprint store, and if still a problem, maybe a call to customer service.

I work for an indirect dealer fixing Sprint phones and I can guarantee you that it is the digitizer. HTC really did disappoint with these crappy digitizers. Whats more sad is that sprint does not rule this as a common problem when it truely is.
Ok for starters im in Australia and this phone was an import, so sending it back under warranty is a loooooong process, so im open to ideas.
I know digitizers are easy to get, especially on ebay, there must be people that have already replaced them. Im engineer by trade so my technical skills arent bad. Im seriously considering just trying to replace it myself.

there are deff ppl that have replaced them... but no one has posted sufficient information, pics, or videos when replacing the screen. to my understanding the digitizers are attached to the lcds with an adhesive and there are ribbon wires that get in the way of removing them. in all seriousness it might be easier to order a replacement digitizer with an lcd already attached
Ur digitizers are dirty ... put you phones in boiling water .. should fix it

Alright, guys; I need some help. I previously had the classic all to well known problem with my digitizer, where I was missing about a half inch of touch input on my screen. I had gotten used to just rotating it to type, cause I was out of warranty, and I'm upgrading soon. However, more recently, I have developed a much bigger problem. My touch screen no longer works, AT ALL.
The issue first started when I attempted to install "Someone's ROM" with "That libs". I got screen fade-out that some other users reported, so I pulled the battery and flashed back to my EPinter's CM10 backup. After it had booted, I went to unlock the screen, and NOTHIN'. Not registering any presses or swipes what so ever. I then went into recovery and cleared everything, still nothing. Hooked it up to my PC, ran a FULL wipe (OS included), and flashed a fuitcake. After booting; still no touch screen. A helpful member of this forum suggested I try the PDS fix, so I did. Still left with the same result.
So, my question is... Is there any way that someone MUCH smarter than I can look at some type of statistic I can pull from my phone to see if there's a software problem causing this issue? And if so, is there any way I can retrieve said info with out being able to use the phone it's self? I really don't want to go the next 2 weeks with a flip phone. heh.
EDIT: If anyone can figure this out and get it fixed, I would be more than happy to donate.
Mast likely your digitizer is just broken!
Happens quite a lot on that phone.
They are not that expensive! (see for example http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Screen-Digitizer-Replace-broken/dp/B004Z0UO8O)
If you can't change it yourself see if you find someone to do it.
Yup. Sounds more like a hardware issue since you already did all recommended procedures.

Yeah, I figured as much. Just hard to accept that it's finally completely gone out on me. Especially since it happened at the exact second I tried flashing experimental, untested firmware. I am aware of how simple a digitizer replacement would be, but I don't want to spend $40 on a new one, when I'm about to dump another $300 into a new phone in two weeks, ya know?
