[Q] Rooted...now root gone! - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys, first let me say I'm an ex Dinc owner with many ROM's flashed under my belt and like most of you I decided to try my hand at the manual rooting process and let me say the directions were flawless and thank you to all that helped in that process. Unfortunately, I'm more of a silent user and because I don't have enough posts I cannot post in the Development forum so I'm sorry for putting it here.
Now, like an idiot I completed the root, downloaded superuser(everythings great) then downloaded Rom Manager and was about to create a backup and then I screwed up!!!! I accidentally flashed the update.zip and NOW I HAVE LOST MY ROOT!! if I go into Hboot it says:
Mecha XD ENG S-OFF
HBOOT - 1.04.2000
MICROP
RADIO - 1.16.00.0223r
eMMC-boot
Do you want to start update?
. Sorry if I'm rambling I just can't believe I screwed something up like this. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...he-htc-thunderbolt-and-unlock-its-bootloader/
Something happened that caused me to loose root as well. All I had to do was repeat step 7, and you should have root again.

delete the PB50945.img or whatever from the root of your sdcard. if you try to boot into hboot and it sees it there it tries to flash the file for you.

If you had posted in the dev section it would have either been closed or moved here anyway.
But yeah, in agreement, remove whatever it is trying to boot off your microsd card.

Guys did that actually as you typed it but still not fixed. When I opened superuser it asked if I wanted to update a binary so I said yes. It told me it failed but a zip file had been created on the root of my SD and I need to boot into recovery to flash it. If I boot into recovery I get a pic of my battery with a hazard sign. Thoughts ?

You might just end up with the retail price of a Thunderbolt on your next bill. Really tho they will be able to take one look and see you are running leaked software.
BTW the pink "Locked" at the top of hboot has to do with having HTC's official unlock capabilities built in. You can still root that build easily.

Well I don't know of any root method where the first thing you do is flash an hboot so..... Also the only way I know of for sure to root that build is with Revolutionary but I don't think there is a mac version. Plus it makes it somewhat hard to get back to stock when you use Revolutionary.

***LOCKED*** On Bootloader
Hello All,
First of all thanks for the awesome easy guide !!
This is the first time I am rooting my HTC Tbolt and have had an issue to start with.
Used the instructions in the link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1401959
After I download the 2.11.605.5 downgrade zip, I rename it, put in on the SD Card and go to HBOOT and it installs the downgrade just fine.
But at the end of this process, when I try to get the MR4 Radio onto the SD Card and install it, it simply does not happen. HBoot checks for the file, finds it, but nothing happens. I have renamed in properly and followed instructions to the dot.
I also noticed a ***LOCKED*** right on top of the screen and I think this could be an issue.
Can I go ahead and proceed with the Revolutionary Root Technique ? Would this be possible at this point ?
Is there anyway I can get Flash the MR4 Radio before I actually root ?
Also, would I be able to flash the MR4 Radio onto my device after Rooting ?
Any help is much appreciated !
Thanks in advance !
Cheers !

"Update Failed! Main Version is older!"

WTF MATES!
Ok, so I probably should have done more research but I went to google and searched BY DATE for the most CURRENT INFO on rooting the phone. I got this site: http://www.goodandevo.net/2011/11/state-of-the-htc-evo-root-world-november-2011.html
I went by the HTC unlock method because the first link (revolutionary) didn't have my HBOOT version. Now, I'm suffering because of it because my fastboot doesn't come up any more. I get the message "Update Failed! Main Version is older!" So I went to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239821
...and followed those instructions and...nothing worked. Is there any fix to this? Any help would be appreciated and sorry for being.... yes, a noob.
1- This is the wrong section
2- could you provide more info on your phone like what hboot version u have
If u are more specific you may have better luck...

Do you have a file called [PG86IMG.zip] still in the root of your SD card? It sounds like maybe you have an older update file that the phone wont use because you upgraded to the newest via the HTC Tool.
thank you very much, that's what it was. i removed the file and it worked

If you mount your sdcard you should see one named PG86IMG.zip, you'll need to rename or delete it.
you mean to say i have to use another custom rom instead of the one i am using
PG86IMG
i am not being able to find the solution for this prob. i have done almost everything but still the same error pops up all the time. did it several time. first of all i am not being able to get the mmcblk0p31.img file.
i almost checked all the tutorials but no use i am still not being able to figure out that where i am going wrong.

If GSM is anything like CDMA, you're S-On and because the file you're trying is older it will not let you flash it. Good luck.
Sent from the 3Dimension.
ok but now it not start .
The reason you're getting stuck is because the bootloader automatically tries to load PG86IMG.zip if it exists on the sd card, the quick and dirty way around this is to remove the SD card, boot the phone up and but the card back when the phone has booted up.
"the main version is older" problem is due to the fact that before updating the timestamps on the hboot in the PG86IMG.zip(1.49.0007) and your current hboot (1.49.0009 or 1.49.0018) are compared, and as it turns out 1.49.0007 is the oldest of the bunch, so it gets rejected.
to get around the above mentioned problem (for the GSM version at least) follow the instructions in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1471246 it basically changes the timestamp/versionID of the 1.49.0007 to trick the phone into downgrading.

[Q] Bootlooping phone is becomeing a PITA...

So the phone is bootlooping. I don't have recovery installed and my phone is S-ON. I tried flashing the 605.5 RUU, it updated the bootloader, but the phone is still bootlooping. I have access to HBOOT, and can use fastboot usb, but I am unsure of how to proceed.
Stats:
*** LOCKED ***
MECHA XD SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-1.05.0000
MICROP-/
RADIO-1.48.00.0906w_1
eMMC-boot

FASTBOOT (Working)
RECOVERY (Bootloops)
FACTORY RESET (Bootloops)
SIMLOCK (Don't know what this is/does)
HBOOT USB (Don't know what this is/does)
IMAGE CRC (Gives values for osbl, amss, hboot, boot, recovery)
What can I do to fix this phone?
This is bad. You may be bricked. Might want to talk to the people in #thunderbolt irc.
The RUU you used, was it an exe or zip file. If it's a zip did you put it on the root of the SD card and rename it pg05img and then flash it in hboot? That's how i fixed mine.

This you? Haha...
Thank you for telling me that I have to rename it to PG05IMG before using Hboot to flash. I didn't know that. I've rooted 4/5 phones manually using adb and fastboot. I have a complicated problem that may not have a solution. Suggestions like, "Is your battery charged? / Did you turn your phone on with down button and power button? / Did you rename the Stock RUU correctly?" are not helpful in this situation.
Suggestions like talking to the IRC guys like Adry, Jcase, Scotty and the like is solid advice. Unfortunately, they think it appears to be a lost cause. I am merely exploring other alternatives by asking an fairly open ended question.
Bottom line, thanks for your 'help', now please move along.

This is uncalled for. You asked for help, he tried to give it. While you did say that you had tried flashing stock, you didn't specify how. You didn't say you had done it before. Chill out.

Way to take a post out of context. Completely ignore this.

Not trolling, just pointing out the obvious. And "useful" includes keeping threads respectful and on track in my opinion which, in this situation, is the one that matters. There is no room here for debate or attempts at witty replies. If you have a problem with my moderation then PM me and we can take it from there. Otherwise, please review my previous advice.
ok im just trying to help so dont bite my head off but im not sure but if you could use the revolutionary tool in hboot and get S-OFF then you could try reflashing a older hboot and i would even try reflashing the radio while your in bootloader since its the only thing you can get into
Also i would download from somewhere else the RUU and flash it again through HBOOT this video shows
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE8BiIFUOpk
If that dont work try this
http://revolutionary.io/
plus i found this but dont know if it would help
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1293180.html
resolved?
Old thread I happened to stumble across...
Bootloops are almost always are kernel related.
My advice:
1) see if football hasn't got an official RUU.. RUU reset may work on its own and would be the simplest solution.
2) if no, open up the last known good working Rom or RUU you had before this soft brick.
Steal the boot.img out of the zip file; reflash boot.img from this (stolen file) through fastboot.
Also, if needed, prep by unlocking the bootloader through fastboot (unlock.bin from htcdev).
If you happen to have been using a2sd, d2sd or some other method to allow data or cache to be written to your SD, this also could be caused by /sdext (not communicating with kernel).
Solution for that is fairly simple:
Pull SD card and reformat the /ext partition(s) via a SD reader/writer.
Doesn't seem like the worst case I've seen, but I know not having your phone work can frustrate anyone. Hope that helps.

[Q] If currently on 2.11.605.5 can you root without worrying about OTA updates?

I have a Thunderbolt that I keep downgrading so I can root it but those dam automatic updates are unstoppable and I want to know if I root it while on .5 will they keep updating or will the new root/rom stop it once and for all. Cause i heard if it updates while rooted phone gets messed up. If your rooted you would know thanks for reading!
you can root the .5 then flash the new .9 rooted rom and it will stop the update notices plus most roms block the update from happening anyway

Would greatly appreciate if you or some else could post simple directions so I don't mess it up. I already no how to downgrade to .5 and I'm getting the idea that your saying use revolutionary to root then flash a rom. If that's the case then let me know and recommend a rom that everything functions normally on and I will be one happy android
1. Downgrade to .5
2. Run revolutionary to gain s-off
3. Boot into recovery and flash superuser.zip from revolutionary website to gain root.
4. Flash a custom Rom or stock rooted .9
And always check the md5 checksum of the files you download before flashing to verify the integrity of the file.
***LOCKED*** On Bootloader
Hello All,
First of all thanks for the awesome easy guide !!

Go ahead and finish the root/recovery/superuser process. Take the .5 and radio images off your SD card for the time being.
You don't have to flash the radios yet, if at all, honestly - depends on what ROMs you wish to run - if they require radio(s) different than what you have, flash them then.
Obtain root and back it all up first, then next steps.

Stuck on white HTC screen. Help Please

Hello every one,
I dont mean to clutter up the forum with the same question but, believe me or not i did read through tones of post.. i just got more confused maybe because i am a "total noob." In any event, let me explain my issue. i am still trying to get my head around "ROM" "Kernal" "img" etc so please bare with me.
So, i had my evo rooted the very first time about 6 months ago with CWM Revolutionary and the installed ROM was SU-3.0 or something. Than Because of a physical problem i had to replace the phone and i tried rooting again, this time around i ended up installing su-2.1 or something but it had all kind of problems it kept restarting and wat not so i decided to change it to ICS from htcevohacks. this is when it rebooted and got stuck. i tried bunch of things but since i dont know wat am i doing its not helping.. my phone has Hboot 1.50 Unlock with revolutionary on it.. thats all i know about "For sure." Everything else i am confused and Uncertain about..
So far i have tried installing the same su files but they keep abording.
From Wiki. i have tried the recovery thing.. downloading the zip files PG86IMG-twrp-shooter-1.1.1.zip PG86IMG-twrp-shooter-1.0.3.zip rename them Started in recovery and it would say failed because the orignal file is older or something like that..
i know i shouldnt have mess with this since i didnt know wat i was doing but now that i am in a mess i need help.. and if anyone can help me i wold appreciate it.. i really need.. so please.
thanks,
Dennis
Are you s-on or s-off? Also, have you tried to flash 4ext recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1561999
Imagika FTW... with Tapatalk 2
Sorry forgot to mention .. its S- On iwill check out the link thanks appreciate the reply.
4ext recovery is definetely the choice for s-on users like yourself. The problem you are having is that if you just flashing roms straight from recovery and rebooting its not going to work. The reason for that is because other than 4ext recovery, most recoveries cannot flash the kernel to the boot partition while on S-on. That's where 4ext recovery comes in. It will let you flash kernels through smart flash thats incorporated in the recovery.
Heres the Thing.. i tried looking up the link posted above about 4ext but i am fairly confused about it... could you please tell me about what should or could i do at this point?? it appears as if, 4ext is something you download and install from "market" However my phone is not turning on at all. Meaning it doesnt go pass the White HTC screen.
How exactly do i install the 4ext.. or is there a "procedure list" or a "write" i can follow.. sorry for the trouble.. i am just Overwhelmed by all the information.
Bottom line here is that.. i have a "rooted phone" S-on "unlocked" with Revolutionary.
and when i try to load any ROM files its not working (get aborded") if not it would load successfully and then when it reboots its stuck on the whit screen.
if i am missing or leaving out information please let me know if not . wat can i do to start this from scratch..
ALSO, i read some posts about dealing with "bricked" phones but it looks like i woud need a Linx operation system which i dont have.
I'm a noob myself, but I've gotten into a similar situation myself where I was rooted and took an update over the air to the new ics Rom, and also tried flashing Roms from apps, and when my phone rebooted, it didn't go past the HTC screen, I was told I would have to load a new stock ruu. Which basicaly means you have to wipe the phone and install the stock rom from new.
