So I have the Vibrant. Unlocked it and Put a AT&T Simcard in it and it worked great with 3G but sometimes it'll drop to Edge out of nowhere and It'll stay there and not go back to 3G unless I reboot the phone or in the settings say only search for WCDMA
Now I wasn't sure if I need to update the drivers on the phone? or a Modem? I'm running Trigger Rom
Thanks for any input or advice

All the modems that ive seen were released by samsung to work for T-mobiles network that said you may have some luck trying out different modems found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868774
as far as drivers if we had a source code for those maybe but the modems will be your best shot.
When I travel I do this to get 3G in Hawaii since Only Oahu Island has TMO 3G.
Here is the way you can do it:
Also by locking into 3g speeds, if you ever go into a non 3g area, or if your 3g signal is poor in your area, then your phone calls will drop and data will stop, unless you go back and set the phone to its default automatic gsm/cdma settings.
Dial: *#*#197328640#*#*
Click [1] debug screen
Click [8] phone control
Click [7] network control
Click [2] band selection
This is where you make a change, default setting is [1] automatic, which means it chooses automatically between gsm/cdma (Edge vs 3g). So we are going to change this and set it to wcdma band which is 3g.
Click [2] wcdma band
Click [1] wcdma all []
Now it should display “select wcdma all bands [*]"
Now on the bottom of your phone, click the menu key, it’s the one next to the home key, now click back, menu again one more time, back one more time, this is just to confirm it set to number 2 wcdma band.
Now click menu key one last time, click end.. and you are done. Now to double verify that the phone is locked into 3g, dial in: *#*#4636#*#*
Then click phone information Then scroll down to “set preferred network type” It should now have listed “wcdma only.” PS, if you tried to do a shortcut, and just set wcdma this way first without doing the lock above, it would just go back to gsm/cdma auto once you exit the screen.
Your phone should now be locked into 3g.
Thank you very much ^^^^ I'll try right away.
Is there anyreason or way for it to snap back into 3G bands when for some reason it is in Edge
There was a guy with somewhat the same problem a couple weeks ago. Take out your sim and type *#2263# on your dialer. Click combi band, then check the bottom band. Its WCDMA 850. It will put a star in the brackets like the rest of the selections. Hit menu, then back. Re-insert sim and you should be good.

Im not 100% sure, but I think AT&T uses WCDMA 850 for their 3g. That's the one I mentioned earlier which is disabled by default on the Vibrant.

AT&T uses 850MHz and 1900MHz for 3G. (They have said that they plan on phasing out 1900MHz, but it's still active in my area.)
Pretty sure there is no 850MHz 3G on Vibrant. Enabling it the menu doesn't do anything. Plus, the FCC document posted by Engadget only showed AWS and 1900MHz 3G bands.
As for the OP, I've experienced the same problem recently...was using stock 2.2 though. Definitely be interested in figuring this out as well. Do you have data problems when the phone switches to Edge? (Other than it being really slow lol) I ask because I was experiencing a drop to Edge followed by no data (despite still seeing the E icon).
Edit: Really dumb question, but are you sure the 3G signal isn't just really weak? Does it happen only in buildings? 1900MHz is supposedly worse than 850MHz in this regard.
As far as I know the Vibrant will not pick up the AT&T 850 band. I have the same problem. I only get 3g when I go into an area that has 1900, even though the map seems to show 1900 in my area. Now when I go into the service mode to select bands it says "RAT selection option in resticted."

my only working theory is that the 1900mhz freq isnt as widespread as the 850mhz freq, as the vibrant uses 1900. (i think). so that may be it. but i ask only because some commenter on a diff forum mentioned the need to create a 3g apn.
ps. the captivate is too boxy for me. idk why att changed it
Those are at&&&-t frequencys tmob is 1700 and 2100 I think so if our antenna only picks up those iy wont ever work on at-t's network

It's not how widespread it is. They use different frequencies so your phone won't pick up the ATT 3G signals at all. Edge is 2G.
But I've seen one person on the forum claim that he did it. You can pm him/her on how to do it.

I also am only getting Edge signal on my unlocked vibrant. When I unlocked my phone, I used the wife's SIM card on my Vibrant and was able to get 3G as well. It registered without any issues.
New york city is also all 1900mhz. I am chugging along at a healthy 4300kbps according to mobilespeedtest. I think that is faster than the 3g spec allows so I am starting to doubt that website a bit.

HI,
Can you explain how you get UTMS / HSDPA 850 on the Vinrant? According to the specs at xda
It doesnt officially support that, but over at howard forums (sorry cant post lins as a new user):
1666323-USING-SAMSUNG-T-MOBILE-VIBRANT-T959-on-WIND-MOBILE.....IN-CANADA
it seems it is an option in the service menu. Have you tried UTMS850 (as opposed to GSM850) and can confirm it works. Its relevant in Australia as the best coverage NextG network (Telstra) operates on UTMS850
Cheers Chris.

is there a link to a map to see if i have 1900 in my area?

Try dialing
*#2263#
choose option [4]Combi Bands
Choose option [8] WCDMA 850 bla bla
Choose Add WCDMA 850 bla bla
If the chip is capable to work in that frequency it will work. There are mixed reports but it is the way to fix it
For the life of me, I can't figure this one out. I've searched high and low but haven't found an answer.
How, on an Android (2.1) phone, can I detect what band am I currently using.
No, it doesn't support locking onto single band (choices are only 2G, 2G/3G, 3G).
No, I can't ask my provider, because they support BOTH bands simultaneously.
No, I can't figure it from a coverage map, since BOTH bands cover my location.
I'm using Samsung Galaxy S (and HTC Desire when it comes from service...), both European versions that support 900MHz and 2100MHz bands (for UMTS).
Is there a way/app/script/ANYTHING that can show me what band the phone is currently using?
The reason for this is that, as I said, in my location there are BOTH types of antennas and even though the coverage is marketed as good, I get very poor signals. I suspect that the phones locks onto just one of the bands (for any reason) and that the other one might be a better choice.
3G band reception is usually worse than 2G because it has a shorter range than 2G and it doesn't have so much building/wall penetration than 2G. I suggest you try setting your phone to use 2G only (in network settings) and try it out. The phones are made so they use the fastest network even if the signal strength is worse.

Yeess...? And your point concerning my question was exactly what? How does that help me to detect which UMTS band my phone is operating on? By turning it OFF?
I'm sorry, but either you didn't read it at all, just completely missed my point, or are trying to piss me off. (sorry, I'm just sooooo tired that people don't read the posts they answer to, or just completely miss the point of the post.)
Sorry. But. UMTS = 3G. So turning 3G OFF does NOT, in the slightest, help me detect what I originally asked for.
Just to be PERFECTLY clear: YES, 3G/UMTS works on BOTH 900MHz AND 2100MHz channels here in Finland. Yes, 900MHz 3G. Not a typo.
I also want to know this question
Same here... No app... come onnnnnnn
Just type *#0011# in the dialer dude. It will tell you which band you're on.
Hi, I have a Vibrant with Nero 4.1 with Tmo and I have it with SIM Unlock, but I want to change to AT&T because Tmo is very poor signal in my area. My question is, the code
*#2263# > wcdma850 , etc.......
This method really works to use AT&T 3G in my Vibrant??? anyone can confirm that ???
I have Nero 4.1 with JL5 modem.
Eugene373, the dev who originally posted the 850 band steps for us, lives in an area where t-mo uses the at&t towers, and he did state that enabling the band improved his signal tremendously when he is in an area using the at&t towers.
Still not sure if I've read a definitive answer to this question; however, most signs point to no. The main argument cited by those denying the 850MHz 3G band is that the FCC document makes no mention of said band, whereas it does mention the 1900MHz 3G band. Also, it seems as though many who cite this evidence are 100% (and almost bitterly) sure it's proof of no 850MHz band--prepare yourself for some irritated posts lol.
I use a Vibrant on AT&T--it works fine because I live in a fairly backwards area in which AT&T still relies on 1900MHz.
Ive honestly never needed it, on tmo in a good coverage area, I was just reporting what a respected dev posted on his site some time ago.

ATT has two 3G bands 1900 and 850.
There is no doubt that if you are in att area where 3g is on the 1900 you will be ok.
The procedure to activate the 850 is as stated above, however I haven't see proof that actually the band is activated ......

Yes, it is but by the default WCDMA 850 band is not checked.
No AT&T 850 3g
I live in Jacksonville, Fl and I can tell you that I do not pick up AT&T 3g signal. I am assuming that means that AT&T only uses 850 here because it is not checked in the service menu. I do, however, pick up 3g perfectly when I travel north into Georgia. So I would say that the Vibrant will not pick up the AT&T 850 band, only 1900. I am not convinced that there isn't a way to make it pick up the 850. I would think that if it is a choice in the service menu then there has to be a way to actually enable it. But, if you only have 850 3g in your area you may not want the Vibrant. Although It doesn't really bother me because I have wifi almost everywhere I go.

My service provider Cable&Wireless Panama uses 1900 band for 3G, but I NEVER, NEVER EVER get anything but EDGE data... ever.
I have my phone set to "GSM/WCDMA (Auto Mode)" in Network settings, but I could choose one or the other.
Which should I pick? I don't know what's up, but I can never get 3G and I know that the Vibrant supports 1900, which they use for 3G.

Not trying to be a jerk here, but are you absolutely sure your carrier uses 1900MHz for 3G specifically?
If you search for "List of UMTS networks" on Wikipedia, it lists Cable and Wireless as 850MHz. Another thread on androidforums.com titled "i9000 No 3G after update" talks about getting an i9000 working on 850MHz for Cable and Wireless.
Also, just to clarify, you are using the T-Mobile/American Vibrant?

I still find it confusing that the phone they support officially (they sell the i9000 here for like $800US) is listed as supporting the same 3G bands as the Vibrant, including 1900, which they quoted to me twice, but somehow, my Vibrant won't connect to 3G, so probably they are just idiots, as usual.
I might have to go with another carrier. Problem is that CW is the cheapest, by almost half. I guess you get what you pay for.

I was just reading this on Wikipedia.
In the bands section of T-mobile and thus their phones, 2g is supported by 850 and 1900. 3g is tied to 1700. I thought I had read it differently before but upon checking up on this once again (just now) that is what I have to offer. So I would assume if your carrier doesn't use 1700 for 3g then you would not ever get 3g.

The Samsung Vibrant supports 3g on UMTS Bands I (2100), II (1900) and IV (AWS/1700).
If your carrier uses any of these bands for their 3g, you will get 3g.
If your carrier uses the 850 band for 3g, you will not get 3g.
Donalgodon's carrier uses 850. That's why it's not working.

It has been discussed time and time again on these forums.
The vibrant is able to get 3g speeds from AT&T because it supports the 1900 UTMS frequency. AT&T uses BOTH 850 & 1900 but mostly 850.
I believe it was confirmed on the official Samsung website that the vibrant works on 1700/2100(AWS)/1900/2100 3g frequencies.

Correct. You'll get 3g speeds, but you wont get as good reception and will most likely drop back to edge more often that you normally would on tmobile.
Thank you, gentlemen.

Is this possible? I dialed *#2263#, selected the combi bands, then rebooted, and I had the 3g icon.
