my thunderbolt upgrade issues - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

EDIT: i had a brain fart and did not search first so i apologize. what i will do is update this thread and monitor for any data connection issues.
just thought i'd share my ordeal trying to upgrade a line to this new phone. this whole thing took 3 thunderbolts and several useless verizon sales/techs (i will never purchase directly from a vzw store again, the staff i dealt with at 2 corp stores was completely inept).
purchase 1: i purchased a thunderbolt and upgraded my line in store and everything is working/provisioned according to the tech. i don't realize i am missing texts and data until after i get back to work since the tech said it would "fully activate" over the next few hours (wtf..... but ok, new device/service and the sales guy wanted to set my expectations low). 2 trips back to the store for a total of 3.5 hours and 2 new sims and they cant get data or text working on the phone.
purchase 2: new verizon store closer to work. talked to the sales guy and informed him of the issues i had prior. he says no problem, they must have had some issues. we definitely wont have them here. i tell him fine i will upgrade but i am not leaving until voice, data, and text are working 100%. he cant get text or data to activate either so he says i can leave and he can call me when its done (little problem with not having a phone though to receive the call....) end result they return the phone an and i am dinged the restocking fee because they dont want to return as a problem.
purchase 3: bestbuy..... my expectations already set super low, i ask them if they have problems activating tb's on upgrades..... they say no, but it could take a while to do the whole process. i told them of the issues i ran into at other stores and they said did the tech reset the phone or factory reset the phone after the initial activation? (bingo! only power resets through the gui although the sales guys at both vzw stores said they factory reset).
for anyone running into data activation/data drop issues, factory reset the phone (i had to do it twice). and it should be solid after that. i have been up and running for the last few hours without issue.
my tb is set to cdma + lte/evdo auto.
tl;dr: data problems? do a factory reset. 3g data/text/voice has been solid after this process. PITA? yes, but it seems to work.

So 24 hours later and there doesn't appear to have been a data drop. There are still some weird fc's with the browser though. And the market has fc'd as well.

Thanks for the tip! My 3g in my apartment that worked with my Droid kept dropping. It works now. Awesome!

I am surprised you paid the restocking fee. I would have told them to kiss my ass.
Sadly enough, the guys at Best Buy Mobile don't always get enough credit, sometimes they do have some real idiots working there, but some of those people know ten fold what a guy at a local single carrier shop will.
BBYM, since I used to work for one, makes you take detailed training before you are supposed to work in the department, doesn't mean its followed, but if someone has been in the department for awhile they will have.
Most carrier stores don't have a lot of training, if they do, it is only about their company, not 6-7 different companies, between post and pre paid.

The restocking fee was charged because they returned it as customer deactivated, not a programming issue. I had to call customer support from my cell to get the restocking fee credited to my account. So all told I lost 1.75 at that store (plus the time I spent there).
I originally went to BB to return something, not walk out with a new phone. I got sucked in by the cute girl who chatted me up while processing my return. I ended up keeping the return and getting a new phone... lol.

Very disappointed with sprint

I made a thread here a few days ago about how my 3vo keeps randomly rebooting:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176931
The phone likes to randomly reboot, freeze or suddenly goes into a phase where its unable to turn on at all unless I do a had reset by holding down volume down and the power button. I took it in to sprint and they saw how it wouldn't even turn on, and all these morons did was reset it again claiming to have fixed the problem. They refused to give me an exchange.
When it started rebooting again, I went back and they told me to go to the sprint repair center where I'd have to drop it off and leave it there for a few hours where it would be tested for the problem. I live really far from this repair center and to make it worse, the idiots at that store told me, if they could not replicate the problem, they would not honor any exchange policy. The problem with this is that the rebooting is really random, sometimes the phone can go a full 2 days without any issue and then without warning all hell will break loose. The person who had reset my phone before even went as far as to say that there is nothing wrong with my phone and that its well within normal operation.
wtf is this? This is the biggest joke of a customer service I have ever seen. I'm really starting to miss T-mobiles service now. I've called multiple sales reps and stores and all they do is try to redirect me to someone else over and over again.
Any advice? I really like the evo 3d, all I ask is for a damn phone that isn't defective.
Try to find another store or call and ask for a supervisor for customer care and have them note your account to replace your phone. You should definitely get it exchanged. This is not a common problem with the phone at all.
The other option is if you are still within your 30 days, go to the store and tell them you want to return it and then buy it again but this time get a newer device. You can do that within your 30 days of course unless you are waiting to try out the Moto Photon.
I had the same issue, went thru two phone already so this problem do exist..

Yeah, I'm within my 30 days.
I called another store and they said I'd be charged $35 if I wanted to exchange it without taking it to the repair center.
Guess I'll just have to go to the sprint repair center and wait around a few hours while hoping the phone crashes while its there.
I've never seen such a bull **** exchange policy. The rep who reset the phone when it wouldn't start told me to stop installing too many android apps and blamed me for the problem, of course I was running factory stock.
A few years ago I bought a defective phone from tmo, all I did was called and told them, and they had a new phone waiting for me at the store when I came in. Has anyone else had to deal with this ****ty sprint customer service or is it just me?
Yea not normal. Had mine since launch. Not one reboot.

I replaced my phone 3 times (seems like the batch was bad) and i bought it at Target..all I did was tell the guy about the problem and I got it replaced every time..he didn't even check..he gave me a phone this last time.from a new shipment and the phone is.flawless..Happy I.got a.good.one because I love the phone..don't know why you are having issues because they can replace it no problem if they want.
Sprint customer service is by far the worst.

Yeah, I'm not at all happy with coming to sprint from T mobile so far. Sprints 3g is also a joke compared to HSPA on T mobile. I'm willing to overlook all these things if they'd just give me a damn phone that isn't broken.
I'm surprised that everyone else around here is able to exchange the phone so easily but the guys I'm dealing with are making it a huge pain. Maybe I just got unlucky with the sprint store around here.

Just to give the other side of this (ie the store)
It does suck that you have a bad device and resetting it is the protocol first. But there are a lot of people who will buy android phones, take them and load every app they can fit on, then come back for exchanges. "My phone doesn't work etc etc."
They will keep doing this endlessly simply because they don't know how to use the phone properly. Doing a reset on these phones fixes the problem 90% of the time, so the stores do this first to cut down on wasted devices, time and money.
I understand that you probably don't fall into that category, but, as with everything else in the world, the bad apples spoil the pie. Hope thy get that straightened out for you soon
What I did was called customer service and told them about a problem I was having, although when I took my phone to the sprint store PRIOR to me calling CS, they said there was nothing they could do, or would do for that matter. So I called CS, and they emailed me a invoice, telling the sprint store what, and how to give me the excange. Then I went to the sprint store with the invoice in hand, and they HAD to give me my replacement Evo 3D. I was within my 30 days.

I am sorry that you have to go through this crap, as people said i would call cs. I had to exchange my device twice at the sprint store, the first time was mainly because of network speed and battery life, after i waited 2 hours for the techs they couldn't find anything wrong except when i did a speed test my phone got way slower dl speed then another phone at the same sprint store. so the rep exchanged the product, the second time my phone was acting u, kind of like your, freezing, screen shutting off, and other things. after a few factory resets my phone would still not act right. so the next time it froze i just brought it in, frozen and explain that i already tried the factory reboot a few times - they had no problems exchanging my phone. I recommend that next time your phone freezes you just bring it in, this way they are able to see the problem themselves.

^^^ This.
Stores suck for customer service, but if you call CS they are monitored for their CS and usually will do whatever it takes to make you happy, within reason of course. I would make the call and they should take care of you.

I came from T-Mobile also and aside from the faster 3g Speeds, I could not be happier with sprint, the service is awesome and I have always gotten credit/discounts/ free airwaves/exchanges and whatever else from the rententions team, They do there very best to help out, If you get a rep that you can barely understand .. ask to be transfer to account services and you will get all the help you need... I couldnt never get that service with T-Mobile even after 7 years of being a great customer ... Yes CDMA/WIMAX is far from perfect but I would not want to be anywhere else...
What I would recommend is going to the sprint store, cancelling the upgrade and returning the phone, then go buy the phone at radioshack or bestbuy. i work for radioshack and if a customer had a real issue with the phone, our store would replace it until it worked properly.
I had the same problem with random reboots, about 5 times the first week. I took it back and they replaced it right then. You have to find the one intelligent person that works there and only deal with them. (I choose to believe there is at least one at each store) I have been blatantly lied to, downright scammed, and treated like **** by so many dumb-ass incompetent in-store reps that I wouldnt believe anything they say. Just keep trying different reps/stores til they exchange it.
Aside from the in-store reps I am a happy sprint customer.

CAn't say I agree with this. If you are within your 30 days still, then I would recommend doing what the other guy did above and get the invoice printed off and going to a corporate and not a repair store to get it exchanged. Its really a toss up in which results you may get, but more corporate stores are made to listen to what CS has to say and the results they can pull up.
Maybe its just me, but my sprint customer service experiencE has been great. They always fix my problems without any fuss.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
About the whole TMO vs sprint thing. I'm not bashing sprint as a whole. Obviously they have attractive pricing, the best data plans (actually unlimited), solid coverage, etc. I'm just saying my T mobile customer service experience was far superior to what I have seen so far. In the past sprint was known to have the worst CS for sure. I've heard they have improved a great deal recently, of course I have yet to see it.
Tomorrow I will contact sprint CS directly and not the store and see what they can do. If CS can't just get me a replacement, then I may have no other option then to go to a repair center, which is frankly absurd considering this is a brand new phone and the sales reps themselves have seen my phone malfunction right before their eyes even after the factory reset.
I guess one way or another I will get a new Evo 3d and I hope the new one will just work right so I can get back to enjoying the phone. I've had over 7 reboots in the last 3 hours with this phone, its unbearable at this point.

Keep grandfathered unlimited when going from Inc to Rezound?

My rezound is coming Monday-- my buddy ordered it for me since I'm on his fam plan. He did it all online and claimed there was no choice to keep my unlimited plan from my Droid Incredible. He signed me up the for the 4 gb plan.. Any chance of me getting back my unlimited by going into a store and chatting w/ a sales rep once I have the phone in my hands? Or any other workarounds??

Yeah, you should be able to get the plan back in the store. Just go talk to someone to get it done.
Never should have been otherwise
Both verzion telesales and the stores will advise that you are automatically grandfathered. I am not sure how you managed to NOT be grandfathered, but you can call the 800 number too.

It's the fact that he did it online. I know what he's talking about. There's not an option online for unlimited. You have to select one of the tiered options. If he goes in the store or calls, he'll be able to get back on the plan.
I was told that when you activate the phone you'll get the unlimited back - that's how mine worked
Interesting- thanks for the replies.. Sucks that I don't have access to the main account so I'm really hoping that the activation kicks it back in. Dunno really if I'll have any way to check except for to have my friend login to the account a day or so after activation?

Have your friend call your local Verizon store. I wouldn't think you would even need to call the customer service. The Verizon store should be able to do it for you.

I upgraded online (same situation - family plan with four lines, two with unlimited data) and I can confirm that you ARE offered to keep your unlimited plan. I was required to change my sms plan. I used Amazon Wireless to upgrade about two weeks ago.
I have also heard that you lose unlimited once you've elected another plan. Evidently you can't go back.

I bought my Rezound online (gave my Wife my Charge) & I kept my unlimited data with no problem.

Dang- I don't like the sound of that.. He swore it didn't give him that option when he ordered it.. From these latest replies it sounds like once he clicked 4gb I got "locked in" and/or "un-granfathered".. Guess I'll hope for the best when it gets here and I activate.

Ur good man. I accidentally removed data from on of my lines (with unlimited data) and didn't realize what I did until later that day. I called to get it added back and yeah it took a couple hours to get it pushed through but I got my unlimited back.
You just have to have your buddy call and verify they kept your line unlimited. 4G is the business btw....you're gonna love it!
Thanks, I hope you're right.. The hardest part might be to actually get him to call.
Why do people keep thinking they'll lose unlimited, the talk was about people who cheated the system by calling and adding unlimited mobile hotspot and then going online and turning it off. We who have unlimited will not lose anything.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
The reason I think I'm losing it is cause he flat out told me he signed me up for 4gb cap and that there was no option for unlimited!
You can get it back at the store....but..
You can get it back at the store....but..You kinda have to raise a "stink". I specifically asked a sale person about it. I was told that he could get it back if I lost the "Unlimited" when I bought mine online. The online options tell you that "you are not compatible" If you have a grandfathered plan. When I got mine I just didn't check an option. My grandfathered plan came up at checkout. Good Luck.
I just asked the guy when I upgraded from my incredible to the Rezound if I still had unlimited data and he said yes, that's all I had to do.
Success! Struck out at VZW store they said they couldn't do it- then called cust service when I got home. Nice lady- she needed to call my friend to get account authorization (which was cool cause she didn't *have* to do that part). He approved, she approved and we're good. Thanks for all the stories/tips here in this thread. Don't know that I'll go over 4gb on reg basis but sure is nice not to have to think about it. Airwave upgrade

I thought you couldn't upgrade an Airwave but long story short I went to sprint to buy another phone and they wouldn't sell me one off contract due to store policy. But he said my Airwave had an upgrade and if I order the phone he would upgrade it without me changing phone numbers.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
is it a corprate store because if so that doesnt sound right they get payed commision for selling contracts and he might have been trying to swindle you
You can't upgrade an airave line. Since they have to give you a phone number to give you the device, yes it does show up on your account as another line. However, any rep with 1/10th of a percent of a brain will realize that it's an airave line, and thus cannot be used to upgrade a phone.
If they do upgrade your airave line, sprint will find out about it, and charge you the full amount of the phone.
No it wasnt corporate store. I ordered the phone said it would be there in about 3 days. He said they don't do it often but sometimes there are exceptions.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
This has been done many times before and there are threads about how to do it. Last I knew of, Sprint was buckling down and closing this loophole. But evidently it can still be done.
On a lot of accounts it shows a message that we can't upgrade airrave lines, but on others they haven't posted the note yet, my manager did one the other day
I just tried to do it at bestbuy.com and it will let me....but now idk, I'm having second thoughts since I'm not digging it that Sprint could catch on and bill me full retail when my regular line is eligible on June 1

I got an airrave couple months ago and notcied on my account that I could upgrade the line right away. This is on top of my current line with the evo3d having an upgrade credit right too. I tried to upgrade that Airrave line for a Nexus S but the store didn't have any in
Can someone who has done this confirm Sprint never charged full price later on? Additionally, it seems lime doing this makes you sign up for a data plan for that 'line'

I can confirm that as a customer there are no negative repercussions except the loss of any mail in rebates. They are systematically flagging accounts to warn reps not to do it, and threaten reps about doing it. But the risk is all on the reps side.
At what store would doing this upgrade be most successful at? Best buy or sprint store?

What did you have to say to sprint to take the data plan off? I guess I'm basically looking for a step by step... Thanks bro

[Q] XT912 rebooting

Hello everyone. I've seen some rebooting threads but nothing that I can find similar to mine. Before the 4.1.2 update all was well. After it started having problems with my rooted phone. After alot of messing around I finally found a stock update and installed it through the recovery. Everything worked fine for a while. A few days ago My phone just started rebooting. It would come on, stay on for a couple minutes then reboot again. So i did factory reset and some other junk and finally got it working again. So this morning I'm on my phone using it as normal, everything is fine. Sometime around noon it just went out of service. Nothing. I went through the mobile networks menu and about phone. There just was no service. Phone number, Signal, everything was "Unknown". I turned on wi-fi. It seemed to work, which was ok. maybe there were just problems and I had to wait em out. Not long after it just rebooted and went back into the reboot cycle from before. Been trying the things I'd done before with no luck. Talked to a Motorola live agent online and they couldn't figure it out. Talked to a verizon agent online, they didn't know anything about it, so they said they'll send a replacement phone Tuesday. Just wondering if there is something I can do to fix it til then or permanantly, or if anyone know's what's going on with it lately. Thanks ahead of time.
Be prepared, you might have to pay some money for the replacement since you are/have been rooted

Maybe. IDK. The verizon lady said they'd only charge the $299 if the warehouse found any damage to the phone, which the phone is in more or less mint condition. First time getting a replacement. Regardless they shouldn't be allowed to charge for manufacture faultyness. I'm sure they dont see it that way but meh. w/e. Thanks for the heads up though.

Maybe. IDK. The verizon lady said they'd only charge the $299 if the warehouse found any damage to the phone, which the phone is in more or less mint condition. First time getting a replacement. relax and enjoy the new handset my friend.
sry for the delay. after some going through verizon, i got things taken care of.
a small bit of info someone told me that helped.
i went to an actual verizon store, not some subcontracted retailer and spoke to a manager per say. she couldnt help but my visit was on file now.
so i went online to verizons site and filled out a survey saying i was most unpleased with the help and results. a district manager in my region contacted me and dropped $200 off our bill leaving the $100 insurance cost.
every bad survey filled out on their site gets a call to the store u were unhappy with and corporate doesnt like it so they do their best to make the customer happy.
this info was from someone i did work for who works for verizon. was very helpful and hope it helps someone else.

Sprint screwed me but Finally a working evo

Well I have had the Evo 4g lte for over a year now and live in Tampa. I have never had a solid 3g connection for more than 30 seconds, it just stayed at 1x (even though the bar up top always said 3g) and now that 4g is all over down here I still have yet to connect to that. After multiple trips to sprint stores in Florida, Virginia, and Kentucky always being told everything checks out and that it just the towers or I call Sprint to only be told that it is just the prl. Well this weekend I went to a different store where the guy was actually perplexed that I didn't have 4g since the tower is across the street, and his Iphone was connected to it. So he made several attempts to fix and then took it to the tech guy to have it worked on who for a minute got it to connect to 4g but by the time it was back in my hands it went back to 1x. So they ordered me a new phone which came in today. This phone also would not connect, so the manager got involved and they went at it for at least a half hour trying so many different things up until they remove "sprint services" for my account and my phone fired right up onto 4g network for the first time.
Upon leaving the store I call sprint to try to get a credit for the past year of no service. Well they told me that the "Sprint services" that was removed has nothing to do with data and it is a tracking program they put on phones that are in upgrading areas for billing reasons. and that there fore I must have always had internet since I do use almost a full Mb a day through email and other account syncs and that me now having 4gt is just a coincidence. They are willing to pay 25 dollars for the inconvenience of such a long troubleshooting though, pretty much they are denying any blame, and yet shut me up. I wanted either a free month or release me from the contract... they laughed.
I am sure I am not the only one who has had this problem so please if you have had my symptoms please speak up, Also if anyone knows anything else about my situation and has some advice on how I can get something worth while, like a free month for the hassle please tell me.
And yes once I am finally out of contract I am switching to verizon even if their phones are disabled.
Man your never going to get anywhere with Sprint customer service. Forget about it. I've had first hand experience, and it never went anywhere other me getting extremely pissed. We were trying to get the Evo lte replaced with a s3 for the exact same reasons you are having. 4g connectivity issues out the ass with this phone. They said they could replace this phone with some cheap low spec lte phone that's like free on the sprint site because the s3 is not '' comparable''. They also lied and said they'd call back once the price on s3 dropped and then replace the Evo. Never called back and went to corporate to find out the cs rep said the problem was resolved when it was not. We did a burnout out right in front of the store. I'm just riding out the contract with the Evo as I gave up trying with cs, then switching to one of the major 2.

I would be very interested as to what the EXACT name of that which they removed from the account.

I'm 95% certain that was the name "Sprint servces" it might have been "Sprint sources" or some other completely unambiguous name like that but I will be back in touch with them today or tomorrow when I have a better understanding of where I should go with this and I will triple check the name then.
And when they first booted up the new phone that it went right into roaming mode
