[Q] Is there a way to move contacts to SD card? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to back-up, move and or copy your lists of contacts onto the SD card? Had all of my contacts entered then I rooted and had to re-enter them all back in. I would love to just move files then inputing them over and over.

They should be backed up with google. Try settings>accounts & sync>your gmail>sync contacts
Or something. Haha

Thanks alot.

Make sure if you don't want to backup your google contacts to uncheck the backup to google account. Otherwise you will have duplicates.

The last reply is the best method. It is always better to have it synced through gmail or another email server. Does anyone know how to force 'phone' contacts over to say gmail or exchange server without doing an export?

Shocked with new Rom

ok, being new to this I should expect hiccups in the process, but when I upgraded to Bionix Frost over the weekend from stock, I LOST ALL MY CONTACTS! I did everything that the guides said I should (backups with Titanium backup, etc) and apparently did not properly back up my contacts. If I did, I have no way of figuring out where the back up is, or how to recover them. Any ideas where back ups get put?
Also if I switch to another rom, what is the proper way to back up contacts so this never happens again, lol.
Sounds like you saved your contacts to your device, when adding contacts in the future save them as Google contacts/Gmail contacts, that way they are always at gmail.com under contacts and go from device to device. Yours are more than likely gone for good
I usually make sure that when contacts are created that they are saved to my google account and that usually works for me without any hiccups.
also, in the contacts app, if you hit the menu button and select import/export, there is an option to back up to the sd card.
Try put you contact on gmail or SIM card.

Transfering contacts from backup assistant to google

I'm trying to transfer my backup assistant contacts to my google contacts for my phone. Is this even possible? and if so, how does one go about doing this? I'm tired of having 3-5 numbers for each contact and would like to just have it all on google since a lot of roms are cutting out backup assistant.
You can do this:
- Go into contacts on your phone
- Hit menu > Import/Export > Export to SD card
This will create a .vcf file that you can import into your gmail contacts. (I did this step on my computer.)
There may be other, possibly easier methods, but this is how I've done it in the past.

Do just this^^^ it's the easiest way to save contacts and be able to get them back regardless of which rom your going to

I actually had to do the same thing recently and the way I did it was to log in to Verizon and used backup assistant to export a file with my contacts. Then I logged in to my gmail and imported them to my contacts in gmail. Then when I flashed CM7, all I had to do was sync and they were all there.

I wish I could do it this easily, but I have multiple duplicates that I want to get rid of. I guess I could just do it in google contacts. Also, for some reason the .vcf file wouldn't work for me, but the .csv file from backup assistant worked.

I did this by slowly going through all my contacts and deleting the copies and then importing it to google contacts.
Thanks for both of your guy's help! It's much appreciated!
I did the same thing. Went through and un-linked them, combined numbers under one contact where I needed to, etc. it wasn't fun but I only had to do it once. Life is much easier with out having some contacts on the phone and some online.

You can set to hide all other contacts except for your Phone contacts. I use Youlu Address book for my contacts, the looks are pretty good too.

Yes But when i export or back it up ... whole GMAIL - Emails are also being Backed up ....
You can backup your numbers via Kies. I guess that's the only useful function of the program.

Use Youlu, Hide your gmail contact, only display the contacts on your phone. I hope you are able to do this and then back up the contacts on your phone to Youlu.
I am using it the same way
easiest way of doing this is, open contacts > go to the options> click on Import/export > Export your contacts to Sdcard > then save the vcf file to a save location like your pc or back it up on mail
Why not transfer to SIM?

[Q] How to sync contacts to cloud

Ok - this will sound like an incredibly newbie question. I have a bunch of contacts created on my phone (ie: when I created a new contact, I chose to save it in Phone). I was expecting this to sync automatically with gmail contacts, but that doesn't seem to be the case. There don't seem to be listed anywhere in my google account.
Is there any way to easily sync these contacts? I am running Gingerbread 2.3.3 and am very surprised at this.
Thanks,
Eric

Open contacts and export your contacts to your SD card. Go to settings, accounts and sync, uncheck background data transfer. Go back to settings, apps, all, contact storage and choose delete data. Turn background data transfer back on. Import your contacts from your sd card and make sure to choose google.
I had to do this on a family members phone the other day.

Thanks for the tip. Very helpful. Although, I think you mean to export your contacts to your SIM card - I don't have an option to export to SD Card.
The other way I found was to use Kies. I've pretty much avoided it, but it did a great job syncing everything to my gmail contact list. Once there, I was able to disable sync, wipe the contacts clean on my phone and renable sync. Now everything is listed as a google account and sync'ed to the cloud.
Tx,
Eric
I think it just automatically creates a file on your sd card when you hit export. I also had to do some digging online a while ago to find this out, seems like a pretty big oversight on Google's part, but once everything is synced up, it's like butter.

First of all thank you for answering me so quick. I understand that, my question was if there was any way to revert this, unmerge tha contac list or any other way of setting it back the way it was. I was just trying to backup my contacts using google.

i suggest you keep them that way. because when ever you flash something on your phone, you may loose your contacts when you data factory reset. once you login to your google mail, your contacts will be in your phone. you can even look up your contacts in your gmail on desktop. i hope you know all these already.

You can do this
Open Contacts
Tap > Menu
Tap > Import/Export
Tap > Export to SD card
You will get a message saying it is saving a 00001.vcf file
Tap > OK
All contacts are then saved to a single vcf file the on the external memory (SD) card.
Use a file explorer and make sure you have the file on your external SD Card
Next got to Settings > Application Manager and scroll across to All
Scroll down to Contacts Storage and tap clear data, this will wipe your contacts data
Go back to the Contacts
Tap > Menu.
Tap > Contacts to Display
Tap > Phone
Tap > Menu
Tap > Import/Export
Tap > Import from SD card
Import the 00001.vcf file and select Phone as the option
You should have all contacts back with a Google icon and a Phone icon next to them, if you have then finally do the below
Next log into Gmail click on the Gmail drop down (top left under the google logo) and select contacts, then select all and click More > Delete Contacts, give it a moment to clear from your phone
Done, removed from google sync and back on your phone also backed up to your SD card as a single vcf file
