You can set to hide all other contacts except for your Phone contacts. I use Youlu Address book for my contacts, the looks are pretty good too.

Yes But when i export or back it up ... whole GMAIL - Emails are also being Backed up ....

You can backup your numbers via Kies. I guess that's the only useful function of the program.

Use Youlu, Hide your gmail contact, only display the contacts on your phone. I hope you are able to do this and then back up the contacts on your phone to Youlu.
I am using it the same way

easiest way of doing this is, open contacts > go to the options> click on Import/export > Export your contacts to Sdcard > then save the vcf file to a save location like your pc or back it up on mail

Why not transfer to SIM?

[Q] Is there a way to move contacts to SD card?

Is there a way to back-up, move and or copy your lists of contacts onto the SD card? Had all of my contacts entered then I rooted and had to re-enter them all back in. I would love to just move files then inputing them over and over.
They should be backed up with google. Try settings>accounts & sync>your gmail>sync contacts
Or something. Haha

Thanks alot.
Make sure if you don't want to backup your google contacts to uncheck the backup to google account. Otherwise you will have duplicates.
The last reply is the best method. It is always better to have it synced through gmail or another email server. Does anyone know how to force 'phone' contacts over to say gmail or exchange server without doing an export?
awesome info here - learning more everyday

[Q] Duplicate contacts when creating text message

When I start a text and put in the name of the contact I want to message, duplicates are showing. I have it set so it doesn't do this for calls, but I can figure out how to do it for texts. It shows 2 of every contact. Is there a way to set it do it only pulls names from either the phone or sim?
Any sUggestions as to why this is happening?
do you use gmail to backup and save your contacts?

I already did that. i dont have this issue for when I make calls and look up names, just texts. Im not storing my stuff on gmail either
This all started after I tried to update my phone to the newest update thru mini kies. i ended up having to wipe my phone and restart. I did get the update, and now i noticed its doing this.
It looks as though the Messaging contacts display is ignoring the 'Contacts-->Display Options' settings. I have my phone contacts set to display just the names etc from the Phone memory, not the SIM memory and it works well - no duplicates. However, when composing a Message or Email and press the Contact button, the list of contacts shows 2 of everybody. I've gone through everything obvious but can't see it, now turning to the experts for advice please? What do i need to tick/untick remove or whatever to put this right?
Any suggestions how to make this stop?

Are you using gmail to backup your contacts? If so just go into gmail and consolidate all the dupes than delete the contacts saved on your phone and sim. Had the same problem with dupes in the messaging. If you need more help just shoot me a pm

Which ROM are you using?

My contacts are not backed up to gmail, and im just using the regular stock rom. I dont have phone phone flashed/rooted/whatever.
I had the same problem
sign in to gmail on your computer click contacts it will display all including the phone numbers stored on you your phone if you delete them all (contacts with phone numbers) it should take off all duplicate contacts away
but make sure all phone numbers stored already on your sim card
its something about MIUI if you ever used it before
if that didn't work I know for sure if you have a gmail contact and a phone number contact with the same name and you trying to send sms or mms it show both of them as to send to at that point I would edit the first name of gmail contact by adding * to the name
Hope that helps
But I dont have any contacts listed on my gmail contacts when I sign in on my laptop.

the only thing i can think of that after you restore your phone do you restore it from backup that it has a duplicate contacts ?
or go under contacts/press the first key to the left/display option/ choose phone, sim, gmail (all) then view your contact list and delete all duplicate contacts
best thing i found is to store contacts on sim only that allow you to import them to any phone and also to your own phone after you wipe it off
My contacts show up fine in my address book, no duplicates. So I know the issue isnt with that. There are no duplicates on my phone.
I dont know what to do. Ive tried everything, and its really annoying when trying to send a text to go thru all those duplicates.
when I go to create a text, there are also email addresses showing when I begin typing a name to search for a contact. I dont know where they are coming from

You need to backup all your contacts to gmail. First.
Go to accounts & Sync and tap your google account or any other email accounts you have on your phone. It will give your sync screen, see if "sync contacts" is ticked there. If it is then try unticking it, see if that helps.

Edit android contacts on computer?

Hey everyone, searched through the forums and on google and couldn't find an answer. I got a HTC Incredible S and want to edit my android contacts on my computer.
I thought there would be an app with a web interface or something similar I could edit my contacts on my computer.
I have HTC Sync, but don't want to use Outlook to edit/add contacts.
Any ideas?

Kinda curious why you want to use pc to edit when you can it with your phone. Is it because you want to use a physical keyboard?
Have you tried Gmail? Your contacts are auto-sync'd with your Google account by default; just use the gmail Contacts interface to edit them quickly and easily. That's what I do.

Thanks for your suggestion, Just tried it then, it looks like a very promising app but has a few glitches which I suppose lays uniquely with HTC phones.
I can add/edit a contact all-right however when I delete a contact and refresh the list it comes back up.

Yeah, have a lot of contacts to add and don't want to use the phones touchscreen. Also I find HTC's interface to delete a contact a little convoluted and have a lot of old contacts I want to remove.

I've been trying to get my contacts from the phone via GMAIL using the Google account associated with my phone and cannot seem to find the contacts interface. I'll look through it again, maybe I missed something
EDIT: Found It, but it doesn't have all my current contacts in there. Maybe it's because the contacts are stored on the sim card and both programs cannot get sufficient rights.
I deal with this all the time after converting folks to Android. Here's the thing:
The contacts system on Android is very powerful and flexible. There are 3 places where "traditional" contacts are stored, and on top of that, every app can have contact records that integrate with your built-in contacts.
SIM card contacts - contacts stored on the SIM card (duh)
Phone contacts - contacts stored on the phone's internal memory
Gmail contacts - contacts stored and synced on Google's cloud
All these contacts can be found in the contacts app - but you probably have phone contacts or SIM card contacts, that's why you can't find all of them in Gmail.
Here's what I suggest (I do this with every one who gets a new Android phone):
(based on how it looks when I do it, but how it looks when you do it depends on your android version, skin, gmail theme, etc.)
export all your contacts to a file on the sd card
contacts > menu > import/export > export to sd card
[*]copy this file to your computer
mount your phone's sd card to computer and copy file (should be called something like 00001.vcf or something like that)
[*]delete all contacts from the phone (this is so that you don't have duplicates and so that it doesn't get confusing)
settings > applications > manage applications > all > contacts storage > clear data
[*]go to gmail contacts and import the file
gmail.com > mail (top left) > contacts > more > import > choose file
[*]edit your contacts from your PC on a full sized keyboard for maximum comfort
hmm...
[*]make sure your phone can see your gmail contacts
contacts > menu > display options > choose contacts to display > google > system group: my contacts, facebook > all contacts, etc. etc.
[*]hit the thanks button

oh, and make sure that every time you add a new contact from now on that it is synced with google.

Nice guide, thanks. A lot of people don't realise that Sense ROMs don't sync with Google automatically, so they're not being backed up to the cloud. I'm sure a lot of people will find your guide helpful.

THIS. May also tell any new users to make sure they open Contacts and hit menu->More->Settings->Contacts Storage and pick their main Google account as the default location for new contacts, that way anyone they add later gets backed up to Google Contacts automatically.
(The simple fact that I was able to sync my Contacts with Gmail with my old iPhone and 3 different Android phones is the only reason I've been able to keep the same contacts list for 4 years or so. Minus some idiocy that Sense sticks in your Notes, it's worked super well, too, saved me many times from losing numbers.)
I like Gmail. When you change a contact on your phone GMail get changed as well and vice versa.

This is due to CM roms removing this code from the OS as they remove all Google based coding. Same reason there is no sim option

That's odd. CM7 is AOSP and syncs automatically to your Google account. I've been using CM7 since the inception and never been prompted.

Only if you install gmail. Remember cm roms don't use Google apps by default.
Also don't forget that CM is based on AOSP but they do alot of code changes so its not pure AOSP.
There is a software called as MobileGo. You can edit your phone contacts.
Remote web desktop
I use a plugin for my email client (thunderbird) to sync my gmail contacts, so i can edit them in thunderbird
The plugin is called: Google Contacts

Yeah, but I DON'T want my contacts to be synced with gmail or any other cloud.
I want them synced with Outlook. And I want them edited in Outlook (see above).
Or if not in Outlook, in any other computer-based address book or contacts editor.
And if my contact is named Đuro Šeširđija, and I want all those crazy characters on phone too.
And I want him to have picture I assigned, not his avatar on gmail/FB/whatever profile.
I humbly apologize if I was rude.
For now latest Kies will do...
I'm been having problems syncing with google for a few days now dont know whats going on wiped my phone thinking all my contacts were backed up online but for some reason there no longer there but was there a couple of months back? also tried to restore and no luck
I have my contacts synced to google contacts, you can edit them in gmail and it will show up on your android device. And it helps because you never have to backup your contacts.

[Q] No Google contacts ?

Hi,
I synch, as usual, with my Google account, but no contacts in default application ?
( just favorites !??? )
But I tried Go Contact, and this one show correctly my contacts !?
Any idea why default contact app does not show them ?

Weird, I synced my google contacts and it worked just fine.
My favorites are in my favorites, and my normal contacts are all where they should be...are you sure it actually synced?

i suggest you keep them that way. because when ever you flash something on your phone, you may loose your contacts when you data factory reset. once you login to your google mail, your contacts will be in your phone. you can even look up your contacts in your gmail on desktop. i hope you know all these already.

You will get a message saying it is saving a 00001.vcf file

All contacts are then saved to a single vcf file the on the external memory (SD) card.
Use a file explorer and make sure you have the file on your external SD Card
Next got to Settings > Application Manager and scroll across to All
Scroll down to Contacts Storage and tap clear data, this will wipe your contacts data
Go back to the Contacts
Tap > Menu.
Tap > Contacts to Display
Tap > Phone
Tap > Menu
Tap > Import/Export
Tap > Import from SD card
Import the 00001.vcf file and select Phone as the option
You should have all contacts back with a Google icon and a Phone icon next to them, if you have then finally do the below
Next log into Gmail click on the Gmail drop down (top left under the google logo) and select contacts, then select all and click More > Delete Contacts, give it a moment to clear from your phone
Done, removed from google sync and back on your phone also backed up to your SD card as a single vcf file
