3G Signal strength - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'be only had my fascinate for a few months but has anyone noticed that the data signal strength always seems to be worse that voice strength? Mine always seems to be at 1-2 bars (2 is rare) and even zero bars in places where it switches to 3 voice bars. I have to be in direct view of a tower to even see three bars. I've tried both DL09 and EB01 radios and neither is any better ( although I think EB01 might be a little more reliable). Also my download speeds using Speedtest.net always seems to be worse than my upload speeds.
Does anyone else experience this? Could I have a faulty phone?

I have never hit 3 bars

I live on long island and work all over and in the 2 weeks that I have owned the phone, rooted since day one using many different roms, and using 3 different radios i have never hit 3 bars of reception. Am I alone here? I have never had a problem with drop calls , reception, or data speeds. I was just wondering if anyone gets 3 bars of signal and dare i say even 4 full bars? Signal strength ranges from -93 to -72 dBm
I've seen three or four bars before, but it is VERY rare. Probably just a fluke.
I have hit 3 bars in some places before I started flashing different radios, however I have only flashed the latest radios and not the earlier ones.
im not rooted, i am unfortunately running the second leak. i live in NJ and as im texting i have 3 bars, since the flash ive had 3 to 4 really often, especially outside. i get 2 bars inside and 1 in my house, all depends on location i guess

I used to have on average a good 3 bars, and 4 wasn't that rare, actually really common, 5 i could get for a couple minutes if i past by the tower lol.
Since I have rooted I have not once been over 2. I live in budunk nowhere south carolina, and I used to have really good reception until I rooted.
I can't say that my reception has been affected i am just not seeing a visual of more than 2 bars. I can't complain about the verizon service. Here on long island "cancer capital" there is a cell tower(disguised as a tree, flag pole etc.) on every corner. I have been with sprint, att , sprint all had the same quality service.
i hit 3 bars today on my rooted eris, while going from norfolk to virginia beach, va. out on i-264, 3 bars is very rare for me
4-5 was the norm on 1.5, now 1-2 is on 2.1leak2, but like others I haven't noticed any actual difference in service, just the number of bars.
y'know... now that you mentioned it, even though i never have as many bars as I used to, I have never been WITHOUT service where I used to have it, and I always have 3g in the same places as I used to have it...
is it possible that instead of the root/2.1 update lowering the signal, it just has a glitch in how it displays the connection information?
When my phone is just sitting, I tend to have two bars, but when I go to make a call, it jumps up to 3-4 bars.
I always thought that was odd, lol.
I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia, and I get 2 or 3 bars on 3g depending on where I am in my house. I also get 4 bars when I make a phone call no matter where I am in the house. I am rooted, and have noticed that Ever since I flashed the new Sprint radio 2.42.00.03.10 that I am getting MUCH better service, even the 3g is faster. If you are having reception issues, check your PRL version, I have 51827.
the only way to know for sure is if someone tracked the dbm while on 1.5 at a stationary position. went back with a rooted 2.1 leak2 phone and checked the signal again. also radio signals are affected by a lot of factors weather atmosphere changes etc... if you have 2 phones one of each kind side by side that would give the most accurate data.

[Q] Reporting Incorrect Cell Strength

I have been watching the Signal Strength from Settings > About > Status and noticed the reported numbers do not correlate with the Cell Bar Level display at the top or the numbers I am logging with the Cell Connectivity Tracker application.
Here are some observations from using the "Cell Connectivity Tracker" application:
Cell strength as it relates to the Cell Signal Bars
0 bars = -106dBm
1 bar = -101dBm
2 bars = -96dBm
3 bars = -91dBm
4 bars = -86dBm
Right now I have no visible Bars being displayed and my Signal Strength is -72dBm on the Status page and the Cell Connectivity Tracker logged -106dBm. My phone even went to 1x (xRTT).
My phone is constantly changing from -101(dBm) and -106(dBm), constantly jumping between Cell Locations and reporting Physical Link Down. My TWAS (Time without a signal) is currently 61% for 1h 7m. I'm also less than 1/2 mile from a VZW tower.
Speed Test #1 was 159kbps D/L and 224kbps U/L.
Speed Test #2 was 118kbps D/L and 365kbps U/L.
Speed Test #3 was 50kbps D/L and 469kbps U/L.
Something is definitely not correct with the cell signal strength reporting on the Fascinate.
What if the phone's software is reporting a higher signal than what is actually being received and this incorrect information is being used to make operating system/network connectivity decisions? Might this cause all types of issues from lagging, slow data performance and bad battery life? I find it very strange that all three signal strength measurements are reporting different values.
BTW, I am running Stock 2.1update1 S:i500.04 V.EA28 (rooted with some bloat removed).
Thanks,
Tim
Same thing happens with mine. Never found a fix or case for it. I thought it was done after EC01 but that didn't Signal constantly drops from 3G to 1x wherever I am even if I have full bars 3G. Something is seriously wrong with the radio.
Same here. Is this a problem with all the Fascinates? Or just certain ones?
I've had it on all 5

Same.

If it's the case that a significant number of Fascinates have cell strength issues, wouldn't this support some type of "electronics lemon law"?
I am on my second Fascinate and both have exhibited the same symptoms. My wife's Fascinate is having issues too.
Other Samsung Galaxy S phone users don't seem to be as vocal about the battery, cell strength and lag issues. This makes me wonder if the Fascinate really does have a design/hardware issue. To top it off, the Fascinate is one of the last Galaxy S phones to receive Froyo. Maybe the supposed "issue" is causing problems with the developer testing of Froyo?

Possible ICS modem issue for Rogers users

Any other ICS users notice the I717UCLC5 modem baseband provides a weak signal? Downtown Winnipeg, usually 5 bars is down to 3-4... I cant hit 5 bars. My wifes Galaxy2 skyrocket using the recent design gears leak(ucalc4) has a constant 5 bars side by side... not sure what the heck. Could be an ATT/Rogers thing?
Were you able to get the ICS leak running on Rogers Galaxy Note?

Don't go by bars, go into settings and look at the dBm level of the signals. -80 would be better then -90.

CM10 Nightly 20120921 signal issue

Since I flashed to it my signal has been ****. I can barely make an outgoing call. Anyone else have this problem or any suggestions

My signal seems to be the same.
Check your signal strength with opensignal maps. I've noticed before I'll only have 2 bars on CM10 but I'll have 75% signal strength.
Also nandroid back to a sense-rom and do a PRL/Profile update

Signal Strength on LiquidSmooth

Hello,
I have a question about the signal strength on my DNA. I just installed [ROM][4.4.4][OFFICIAL] LiquidSmooth and I only get 2 bars in areas I was getting 4 bars before with VenomDNA.
Do these roms somehow mess with the radio firmware or drivers or whatever allows the radio to function? If not, should I be updating those manually?
There is a possibiility that 2 bars on LiquidSmooth is equivalent to 4 bars on Venom but I doubt that the different thresholds are that far apart. On LiquidSmooth i generally read between -105 and -95 (I assume the units are dBm).
Essentially I have a DNA that I moonshined to s-off and then installed TWRP and then flashed various roms. I have not done a factory OTA update in over a year so maybe I'm missing something?
Edit: I just realized that LiquidSmooth has 3 colors for the signal bar (white, grey and black) and Ive been getting 2 white and 2 grey (filling up all 4 bars). Not sure what this means.

Sense-based ROMs tend to "pad" the signal strength, and CM-based ROMs are conservative on signal strength that shows in the status bar.
The best indicator is looking at About Phone. I don't believe sense and cm ROMs change the radio, so what you're seeing is how they report the signal strength.

Yup! Thanks! As i was using it I noticed some locations enabled me to get 4 full White bars which means its a legit signal to bar mapping thing rather than my hardware being unsupported fully.
This question was on my mind the other day. I traveled to an area that has really poor Verizon coverage. My DNA (Liquid latest) had no signal (nothing) for most of the time. My fiance has a Moto X (stock) and was almost always getting 3G, sometimes 4G (albite a little slow, for sure). I have the latest radios for the DNA, but is there anything I can do to improve the radios?

She has a different baseband radio for her phone. It will vary. Just because its the latest radio doesn't always mean the best reception. You can try different radios to see what gets you the best reception.
HTC DNA
LG Optimus G
This one drives me nuts too.. Cyanogenmod needs to put 5signal bars in,, I'd enjoy to see a glimmer of connection at times
Æaaa..\../
I noticed the same thing between ViperDNA and Liquid smooth. I just updated my radios last week and haven't noticed a difference. As was mentioned, I guess new radios doesn't directly translate to better reception. bummer.
I have been having issues with my DNA keeping signal at all recently though. I've seen it mentioned in the developer thread, so i don't believe it is related to the new radios.
I've been having problems with the radio cutting out sometimes when I'm on the move, then I have to toggle the radio on and off to get data again. Only happens like once every few weeks though.
