Hello, XDA members!
I'm going to develop a custom ROM/Linux distro based on Android for my and yours G5.
I'm still not decided – do I need stable GB, working 100% or fresh ICS, which contains lots of bugs.
The ROM/distro will be instalable via recovery (only working custom recovery is CWM).
You will be able to choose baseband of your region (try the latest).
And I hope, it will have Apps2SD included.
Can u post screenshot?
I decided to reboot this project – it won't have TouchWiz, nor name „MAD“.
I want to create more Android-based Linux distro than the simple custom Android ROM.
i defoo would like to get involed in this project, how could i help?

I made this thread so we can post the good and bad about our new favorite Rom and not crowd up the dev thread....

Are the extra sound apps required? (dsp etc)
What other known bugs? That dev post is confusing

GAPPS is the only other thing the dev suggested getting. As of this posting, nothing else in that thread is required by the dev (in fact, the other files were uploaded by other users, not the dev).
I just noticed the gapps he posted doesn't have Gmail should I get the newest gapps available?

love the rom but the SD card issue with some apps like spotify is causing them to not run. Can't wait for the fix to be posted.

Just get Gmail separately from the Market.
So ever since I flashed The Hybrid I have not tried any other roms, absolutely love it. I was just wondering, what is this rom? Its rather confusing because it seems like a theme on top of the Unofficial...am I wrong? What cool features does it have?

This is AOSP. Though, I believe it is ported, not built from source completely.
There is zero Samsung crap on it. Every time I get a phone, I wait for this to be made for it.
Check out CyanogenMod.com for more info. It's da best!

It is not a theme. Here's the official Cyanogenmod site, should have plenty of info. Basically it's an AOSP base with tweaks from some of the most active android devs around.

Thank you, I just re-read the rom post. I'm very familiar with CM, I was just wondering if it had alot of the extra features that CM puts in there roms.

It is, essentially, a full CM ROM. However, it is not an official release - the OP compiled and threw together the necessary pieces for this to run on the i717. A lot of the source code is still on the development branch of the repository, so things are expected to be broken. That said, this is surprisingly stable for what it is.
That is awesome. I will flash it and give it a go soon. Thanks

Spotify is not running fine unless you have an sdcard installed. It's not DPI related, it has to do with the internal storage being mapped to /emmc instead of /sdcard. If you run an app with this release that requires additional storage on the /sdcard then it will not run properly. Try downloading anything from the default browser, running dropbox etc - you will get errors.
Great news on the official CM front:

Just curious - for those who have problems with the sdcard setup in this ROM, have you tried Settings -> Storage -> (Menu) -> Storage Configuration -> Use Internal Storage (Make sure it's checked)
Not sure if that will do anything to help, but let me know.
Thanks for starting this thread, the 'how do i turn on the lights, how do i change the buttons...' in the dev section were getting redundant. Anyway, I have a new build on my device.
Fixes sdcard / emmc mount bug.
Fixes basic s-pen usability (sensativity / mouse-pointer)
Latest repository sync + more experimental stuff from TeamChopsticks
Honestly there's not much to fix with this thing (other than the camera), yeah there are a few bugs here and there but for me it's a DD.
Now I'm just waiting on the new ICS leak (UCLE3) that was said to be coming yesterday (I see the build date was actually Thu May 17 03:17:57 KST 2012) - because my in my current build the camera subsystem is broken.
If it takes too much longer, I'll roll it up with UCLD3 and see if it floats.

Looks like it's out of the gate now. Good luck bro
Sorry, I'm kind of a noob, and I rooted my android device. I keep getting advised to get roms. But I have no idea what they are. Whenever someone explains it to me they use "techy" words I wouldn't understand.

It is the operating system of the phone.... (like windows for pc).. carrier phone (stock phone) always sucks with boltweres (useless apps, which eat phone memory)
The aim of all custom roms is to use full potential of android in performance and features.... ( features like multiple lock screen, themes that change complete ui,pie, performance tweaks are some of feature)... rom will replace all system files with more enhanced ones remove useless one.....
Rom like MiUI will completely change your UI ( google miui)
While cyanogenmod mainly for features and performance retaining stock aosp theme.....

I am fairly new to the Android scene, and even newer to the rooting scene as well.
I am a A+ computer tech, that said I know nothing about Android, rooting or customizing the interface and am learning daily, I have been told by associates that the xda forums are the best resource for finding stable usable custom ROMs and information,
so I enrolled to pick some brains and hopefully learn a few things.
now since my ability to search forums has always has always been "top notch", (Pinocchio's nose got nothing on me by that statement), I'm sure I'll be asking questions that have been asked a bunch of times, I respectfully ask that in stead of flaming me, please just post a link to the proper forum post and I will be greatly appreciative.
question 1.
where do I find a rom install guide for idiots, primarily for a galaxy player 5.0 YP-G70
question 2.
what is the most stable and fully functional ROM for my YP-G70, when I say fully functional I mean camera and all, as I have been reading there are issues with newer ROMs with the back facing camera, and I need the camera to be fully functional as I use it almost daily at work for lables and assembly/disassemby pictures., I've heard that Cyanogenmod is one of the best out there, is there a fully functional and stable version that will work with my YP-G70?
question 3.
an idiots guide for what can be accomplished by rooting and how to do it, such as turning off adds, removing or moving stock programs and settings etc.
there will always be more questions but I won't push the noob envelope to much, these three are my most pressing

Flashing a ROM with Odin/Heimdall: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1922461
Flashing a ROM via CWM:
Download ROM from site.
Place .zip file in /sdcard/external_sd/
Reboot in recovery mode.
Delete data/cache
Choose install zip from sdcard.
Reboot.

I'm running CyanogenMod 10.2 (4.3.1) and I'm able to use the back camera via High-Speed Camera (there are probably other apps, but this is the one I'm using). I don't know if it works with the other ROMs (and I don't see why it wouldn't), so someone else will have to get back to you w/that one.

Why you should root your phone: http://www.oneclickroot.com/top-reasons-to-root-your-android-phone/
How to root your phone (I don't think the Kies part is necessary): http://www.wikihow.com/Root-the-Samsung-Galaxy-Player-4-or-5-with-the-SuperOneClick
If you want to remove stock apps, then you can download Titanium Backup (or an app that's similar) and uninstall them that way.

The short answer here is stick with stock. The rear facing camera has been a problem on every ROM, except stock based roms. There are some workarounds but If you need good quality photos from rear cam then stock based is your only solution...
Thank you both for the info and direction.
I know to keep something stock is to keep it original.... but what do you mean stock based? an original ROM that has been stripped but the core and drivers are the same?
and what stock based ROM would you recommend for my GP5.0 yp-g70 that might give me a little better performance and nice appearance?
also I haven't had a chance to explore all the information yet, but can someone give me a link to a good source of direction on how to use titanium backup, or some other app to back up my device, OS and apps so if I should get something not to my likeing I can revert back to original.
and thanks again for no flaming

Scroll down to "5.0 (stock based)"
"Stock based" simply means a modified stock ROM. "stock" sort of meaning; a ROM from the manufacturer. I haven't personally tried any of the stock based ROMS. They may have issues. Im only saying that it is the stock and stock based ROMS that have the potential to have a fully working rear cam. You have to read in each post to find out if there are issues.
in 4.3 rom u can capture from fast busrt app camera

And why would you need a special rom for that?
Link2SD works perfect on our phone.
Didn't test Folder Mount, but i'm quite sure it will work, too.
And there are lots of tutorials how to disable/freeze/uninstall unwanted apps.
All you need is root.
All you need to do is read!
There are enough threads about it.

Thanks for the feedback.
What's the difference between ext2 and ext4? I've read that ext4 isn't good for the SD card life. Is it true?
There's no "gaming rom" but you can look for someone to port slimkat rom, this rom is slim, fast, perfect for games (this is my opinion )
Moving the data files from the game with different xposed modules, swap ram, cleaning cache or other stuff can also help a lot if you're to play games.
