How do I do this? People just say use odin. But do I need to make sure what i exactly need to do I dont want to brick my phone. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Have Odin ready.
Get the jfd file and pit from JACs thread it is in the Bible in the sticky on the development section. Once you go back to stock you will be able to root and go to a custom rom or upgrade it through kies mini

So I dont need nexus S usb drivers?
If you've never connected the device to your PC and your PC doesn't recognize your device then yes you will need them.
I run Windows 7 x64 Ultimate and I didn't have to download them for some reason, PC recognized my phone and downloaded drivers on it's own. Can't say the same for other versions though.
Just in case here is the link to drivers.

Connect your phone in download mode if your computer says download drivers, let it.
If it doesn't your fine.
Just make sure when your in download mode and connected that odin says com: then some number...
Thanks for the replies. Ive used Odin before but I remembered seeing someone say you needed different drivers but it seems to be working. Thanks again!

oh ya and i have a nexus one so if it can help in any way in fixing this problem that may help too?
How long did you wait for it to boot? It can take a few mins. You should be able to fix this alot quicker by searching thru the voodoo thread. Also having a mac shouldn't prevent you from using odin

I'm a newb I have no idea what that means. Sorry that's why I need help. Any step by step instructions anyone can give???
Launch odin select the corresponding files then plug phone in to computer and put in download mode. When usb indicator on the top of odin lights up your good to go. To get into download mode I remove the sim card, sd card and the battery. I put the battery back in hold the vol up and down and then plug the usb in.
Search for the stock rom thread to get the odin files. There should be directions in there and in the bible thread as well.
Also if you haven't already you should install the android sdk for mac. Just google it
You have a vibrant its 99% unbrickable. Odin is your first problem. Recovery mode. Clear cache. Wipe user data. Reboot phone. Just a question why the hell are ppl still using Odin... makes me laugh.. Cool story, bro. My 1.2ghz is sitting at 2743 quadrant guess I'm cooler than you. (Pst Quadrant dont mean anything).
ANYWAY back on topic, Since your on a mac you would need to run ODIN over parallels unless there is a mac version that I'm unaware of. Google parallels for mac, it allows you to run windows based programs on a mac. Then look at the ODIN threads in the bible stickied in this forum. Follow the instructions carefully and you'll be fine.
LOL.. hope it works out.. hate to see an awesome phone become a paper weight.
Gotta say xda is awesome

I'm guessing he tried to flash voodoo thru the update.zip method so unless he can push the stock update or what have you. Using recovery will only keep trying to re-install voodoo I'm guessing. So the best way to fix it is odin.

Wow, a LOT of misinformation here
First of all, you CANNOT run ODIN on Mac.

You CANNOT use ODIN via Parallels on Mac. You can install it and run it, but it will NOT recognize your Vibrant in Download mode which is necessary. I am not guessing, I know for a fact- I tried intensely for 3 days before learning that it's just not possible. And Parallels is a program that simulates a Windows machine on your Mac.
You COULD use ODIN on your Mac only if you run Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp. It's not a super-easy process if you aren't tech savvy, you also need to purchase (or otherwise obtain) a full version of Windows, so you're better off finding a real Windows computer. In case you're curious, additional info on Boot Camp http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

This poster = IDIOT. Wow, you're Quadrant score is so useful to know, very helpful for this guy, and I'm sure there are many who read your contribution and had to sit down in AWE to take in just how cool you and your Quadrant score are. Laughing because of ODIN? Well, Slick, it's gonna be necessary for this guy (and myself) to save our phones. Recovery> wipe data> wipe cache WILL NOT WORK at this point. Yes, the Vibrant is close to unbrickable- but not completely immune. Besides, this guy's Vibrant is soft-bricked, as is mine. Yes, it can happen, and yes, you need ODIN via true windows to fix. Go away and run some Quadrant tests.
Once you get in front of a Windows machine, here is a great step-by-step on how to fix your phone via ODIN http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475 I haven't done it yet, will be later today once I get in front of WIndows.
Android SDK and ADB will not help you at this point either, although they're great to learn for future Android fun.
Good luck- I know first hand how frustrating this is.
ok so is there ANY other way i can get this vibrant to boot? via adb or ANYTHING???
Easy way ....find a friend with windows
sorry about odin not working with a mac. Thought android sdk might load some usb drivers for you...saw that somewhere I think. However, according to lp1527 seems you will need windows or linux. Maybe you could try bootcamp with ubuntu since thats free.
Going out on limb but maybe using adb to remove the update.zip and replacing it with the stock update.zip and flashing that through recovery might work? or try to push the voodoo uninstall .txt first and see if does anything.

I had this same exact problem with mine. Use Odin (refer to Bible section if needed). Odin is very easy to use. Here's what you do:
1. Open Odin v.1.3
2. Download stock Odin stock firmware. This link is for the JI2 leaked release. if you want original JFD then do a search. This link has both the .tar ROM and 512 Pit file: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780935
3. In Odin click on PIT button and open 512 pit file.
4. With your phone powered off and unplugged from pc, hold in both volume keys and then plug in the usb cord (whioch is already connected to your pc). After a few seconds your phone is in download mode (bright yellow on screen)
5. Check to make sure Odin has detected your phone by verify it has populated the port setting (towards the top in yellow) refer to Odin link in Bible page if unsure
6. Click on PDA and open the .tar ROM file
7. Click start
8. Sit back and wait to Odin to finish. It will reboot your phone automatically for you.

So, I tried to load Gingerbread and now all I hear now is Linda's annoying voice before it goes to a Kernel Panic.
I have tried using ODIN and Heimdall with no success.
Heimdall just returns a "fail" after about 4 seconds.
Odin3 1.7 returns a "SetupConnection..." and never proceeds.
Some notes to add as I feel these will answer most initial questions.
I am in Download mode (android character digging)
I made sure I had the drivers that came with Heimdall installed when tryign heimdall, and when using ODIN I had the Samsung Galaxy S drivers installed.
I have tried this on multiple computers with the same results.
First w/ a Windows 7 64-bit and the second was a Windows XP 32-bit
Any ideas why it is hanging up?
Any ideas what to try next?
All input is greatly appreciated and I just want to thank anyone who responds in advance for their advice.

for odin:
Reinstall the SAMSUNG DRIVERS (it works sometimes)
Use a DIFFERENT version of the ODIN program, this works for most people.
And via Ubuntu you don't need specifics drivers i think. Let me know.

Why would you hear Linda?
You never got to flash Gingerbread I'm guessing.
Go into download mode and try connecting to Odin. Pull the plug, then battery. Pop it back in and you should see a phone!pc icon. Plug in the USB and maybe Odin will recognize it.
This has worked for me before when Odin wouldn't recognize my device.
1. how do you flash gb or which rom did you flash? the cm7 or beta from whitehawk?
2. what kernel did you flash for cm7?

So, I did install Gingerbread, and I must have messed something up. I was upgrading from Eugene's Unofficial Froyo release. I downloaded the beta from whitehawk, put it on my sdcard, went into recover mode and attempted to install after backing up. After the rainbow screen I got a Kernel Panic screen, waited about 20 minutes just to see what would happen, naturally nothing. I restarted the phone. I get the Vibrant logo, then rainbows, annoying Linda's voice then the Kernel Panic Upload Mode. My assumption is the mistake I made was not having the right kernel, but now its a matter of trying to recover the phone.
Ok, I got it working, really I am not sure how. I was reading on another Galaxy S they use the home button get into download mode. Out of desperation I tried it, while the download mode didn't look any different it responded to ODIN and worked. It could have just been coincidence but whatever it worked. Thanks for all the support and I got Gingerbread in now.

I dont know where to go from here and hoping someone can help me out. Thanks in advance
Try UN installing the Samsung drivers...reboot PC...re install Samsung drivers..possibly reboot PC again, enter download mode, fire up Odin and just wait...if you get a #com in the little yellow box, flash away..sometimes just removing and re adding the drivers will work..you can also try a different windows os, or Odin 1.83, or 1.7..just some suggestions.

Ok a buddy of mine last night started rooting my phone using the (How to Root AT&T Galaxy Note SGH-i717! Now my computer does not recognize it either. ive tried re-downloading the drivers and downloading kies. and still nothing.
so my question is, can i finish rooting with out a computer and if not, what can i do?

I've assumed you followed direction got a rooted kernel using odin then install superuser, from that then use odin again to flash cwm.
Are you in download mode on your Note?
"1. Turn off your phone and uplug it. Take the battery out of your phone, put it back in, and hold the volume down button and power button at the same time. Keep them held down until the phone starts buzzing and you see the Samsung name.
2. At this point you are either in download mode or the phone will tell you to hit volume up, at which point you'll be ready."
IF not working, recommend starting from scratch
Use this first to get back to stock

Then root via

I don't think he has super user so he might not be able to delete it. If he can't connect at all and odin doesn't recognise then he ia in a tight spot. If you can get into cwm by holding the power button and vol up and down, try wiping everything factory cache div. Cache then fix permissions. If that and the drivers being ddownloaded did not work i sure hope you have an att warranty or have only had the fone for 30 days. this is the rason why u dont let friends do this kind of thing for u!! it is something u must learn..u may have bugs here and there and if u have no clue how to fix it ur %[email protected] so i would say undo all that he did then start fresh...use odin 1.85exe go find the att recovery b4 file plug in to odin click pda find where u put the recovery file that u DL put it in the pda box then u should be good to go
Ok ill make this so simple. You need to start over from the top. I would suggest going on YouTube search for how to root the Att galaxy note. Just watch it. Its a good way to learn odin. Then search Att galexy not recovery. This way you have a visual step by step. That's how I did it I watched it then followed along. I read all the comments (if any) in the comment section. Trust me it so much easier that way cuz you can stop and compare screens and such or stop and replay parts that u need.

If you can't access a computer.
I'm writing this because as I understand it, your friend was SUCCESSFUL at getting CWM on and just not root. If your phone is working otherwise, then try this.
With the phone turned OFF
Hold down BOTH volume buttons and turn the phone ON
When you see the Samsung logo appear LET GO of both volume buttons.
If you have CWM installed right you should be at the CWM menu, offering various options, just select REBOOT SYSTEM and post back here and let us know if CWM is in fact installed correctly.
Ok, before the flaming commences, I have searched high and low and have tried all the options that I have found to no avail. I have a new Galaxy Note that still has Gingerbread installed. I am wanting to perform the upgrade to ICS, but am unable to via Kies. Having searched the internet, I have concluded Kies and Windows 8 preview are not working well together. And, like a dumbass, I have no way to restore back to Windows 7. In a rush to try the latest and greatest (thats a joke, I now know), I neglected to make a proper restore point.
My question is, how can I perform this upgrade with my current setup? At this point, I can not even install drivers to allow my computer to recognize my phone when attached.
Please xda community, any help would be very much appreciated.
Use Odin and flash the upgrade. You can run Odin as administrator, and compatibility mode if needed.

Im assuming you want root. If you already have a recovery installed, just download a stock rom that was just rooted. If not, flash the recovery first, then do install any ICS rom you want. They even have JB ROMs.
Thanks for the advise. The problem I am having is getting my computer to recognize my phone when connected, even through Odin. Not sure why Samsung is being so bull headed about windows 8, even if it is a preview build. It's coming very soon and you'd think they would want to begin supporting it. I flashed my S3 today using Odin under Windows 8 64bit RTM. I just connected the phone in flash mode, went into device manager and pointed the phone entry at a folder of Samsung Windows 7 USB drivers (think they came from download.com or similar). Drivers updated themselves and Odin worked first time.
I haven't managed to get Kies working yet though, but I'm sure Samsung will be working on it now Win8 is final. It's not really vital if you've got Odin, and Kies Air works fine for file management.
Hope that helps
