[Q] Q: Can you use webdock through USB without dock? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My question is, can you use your webtop app through usb? I want to use webdock on my lap top but my lap top does not have an hdmi port, I'm running the mod for just hdmi without the dock. Anyone have any idea how to do it?

not possible. USB is not an HDMI port and they serve completely different functions.
EDIT: also, even if your laptop had an HDMI port it wouldn't work, because that would be an HDMI-out port, not HDMI-in.

How does the desk dock for your pc work then? I figured it had to be through usb

it works through the same type of connector that a monitor uses, DVI or VGA. USB does not transmit video to displays.

In short, the dock is needed right?

an HDMI cable is needed, and as most laptops are, you can't input a display onto it so your options for running at on your laptop are near-zero.

[Q] Can I use WebTop functionality without adapter?

Greetings,
Just've got my RAZR. Its awesome! Just wondering if I can use web top functionality with only miniHDMI <-> HDMI cable and bluetooth keyboard+mouse? What is the purpose of special web top adapter?
It will be possible with a custom APK for WebTop.
The purpose of special webtop adapter is "Money For Motorola". Nothing else.
Or, if you're talking of the lapdock, I've got it (atrix lapdock) and I can tell you it's nice to take with you and use it because it's thin and lightweight.
You've proven my point. I'm not going to buy motorola's webtop adapter
Could you give more details on special webtop apk I need to install?
Also on clove blog its said:
Why do I need this adapter? If you connected a HDMI cable to the device without this, you would get only a mirror image of your device screen on the HD display. With the webtop adapter you get more advanced features like you would when connected to a HD dock, without the need for the HD dock.

As I've understood HDMI mirror image is not mandatory. And I should get image on HD panel, just the phone display will be turned off...
I just ordered the smart controller, I'm also very interested in whether I could just plug the phone into the usb&hdmi cables w/o the adapter or dock.

uHDMI and uUSB on their own will only work with mirror, gallery etc mode, no WebTop afair.
I have a minihdmi and can confirm that there is no webtop

NO.
Atrix has two different output ports. Micro USB for charging and data transfer, and micro-HDMI for TV-out. The laptop dock specific (I stress specific) for the Atrix uses BOTH of these ports in conjuction.
Galaxy S2 has ONE output port, a micro USB port that doubles for charging/data transfer, and connection to the optional MHL adapter accessory.
In NO WAY would you be able to MacGyver the Galaxy S2 to use the Atrix laptop dock.

You know... it just might work. The atrix lapdock does feed 5v power up the usb port which you could adapt from micro usb to whichever varient you need on your MHL cable. This would provide the power necessary to drive the hdmi circuitry that you had feeding into the micro hdmi input of the lapdock. Obviously you wouldnt have a true 'dock' but it sounds like you understand that. As long as your phone detected the mouse and keyboard as input devices it should work. Not sure how that operates with an MHL cable. It might require USB OTG, and im not sure if that is available over the USB connectivity provided by MHL. You could try with a standard usb keyboard If that works, then the lapdocks should too.
I know for certain that you can use the lapdock as the screen by just connecting the video out of the MHL adapter to the lapdock, and a usb power only cable (for the MHL adapter) to the lapdocks normal USB charge ports.
There is a thread called Lapdock HDMI that has more details!

That thread is from the Atrix forum. What bearing does that have on the argument on getting this working on an S2??
Have you even looked at the connections involved here?
The Atrix's micro USB and micro HDMI port are side by side, and the dock plugs into both of them.
The MHL cable plugs into the ONLY port on the S2.
So I'm certainly not an expert on the inner workings of MHL, USB, and HDMI, but from what I can gather, you would have to splice an MHL cable to separate out the USB leads from the HDMI leads, then try to run the HDMI leads into a micro HDMI female port, and run the USB leads to a female micro USB port. I don't even know if that would work with MHL in the equation. I'm fairly certain the phone detects what is plugged in and decides how to use the port, which shoots this down idea down altogether... unless more hacking is involved into the OS. Which is way above my head, and I'm not fool enough to try.
See this thread, which is admittedly for the Galaxy Nexus, but is WAY more relevant than the Atrix thread you linked, as the GNex is also manufactured by Samsung, and also uses MHL technology.

No - the micro USB port on the side of the MHL adapter is for power. If the HDMI port you plug into is NOT MHL compliant (and not many are, yet), you need to plug an AC adapter in to power the phone while HDMI is in use.

well. theres allot of different mhl cables. even if none of them support it. splitting the usb data from the other cables on the mhl should be easy. but like i said il order one to play with. im pretty sure even if i cant do anything with the sg2 il find another use for it. would be great for a project. but many thanks for your input. sure has shed some light in the dark.

Sure, there are a lot of MHL cables, but they are all essentially third party versions of the OEM Samsung MHL cable. (or whatever phone manufacturer you have that uses MHL - HTC, whatever)
I have high doubts ANY MHL cable will support it, since as I said, the phone will detect what type of connection is attached to decide how to send/receive signals from the port - if it sees the MHL adapter, it will do charge/HDMI; if it sees a regular USB cable, it will do charge/data transfer/OTG; if it sees an AC adapter, it does strictly charging. Notice how it can tell the difference when you have it plugged into your computer as opposed to when you have it plugged into the wall?
But if you want to go for it, good luck.
EDIT: yet another piece of info shooting this idea down.
Here's the video that he talks about in that post. Info specific on why this DOESN'T work is at about 7:25.

i pretty much thought the usb and hdmi wouldnt work from the beginning, il have to look into modding the dock to allow bluetooth. ive have just looked at the specifications of a mhl even though they can in theory support usb and hdmi at the same time. the sg2 wont. and i cant see any software mod that would allow this. il see what sort of bluetooth mods are available. maybe incorporate stuff i have done in the past. but the dock is too good to pass by.
i think we can close this thread as its been answered.

Not to nitpick, but it's MHL 1.0 that won't support it. The GS2 just uses MHL. Who knows if there's a possibility to update it to whatever MHL 2.0 is, whenever it comes out.

HDMI, USB and Charge all at the same time?

Could this phone potentially be able to charge, be HDMI out and be connected to a keyboard and mouse all at the same time? Or can you only do some of these features? I Saw the video of the phone being connected to multiple devices but how about everything all at once?

It cannot be connected to MHL and USB OTG at the same time, but you can do everything you mention with an MHL adapter (which has, and requires, a charging input in order to be able to use it), and a bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

So you're telling me that it can only do Video out or read/write to USB devices but can't do both at the same time?
The reason I ask is because I'm thinking of designing a board with its own power source so that it only requires to read information from the 11 pins to accomplish everything.
I want to charge the phone, have a few USB ports and a HDMI port and have the phone interact with all. I just don't know the specs of the board or what is going on. Maybe I need to get in touch with superico.

No touchscreen. Would like to run only in dock mode.

Hello,
My Atrix 4G has has no touchscreen. I don't feel like buying a new digitizer and replacing it. I would like to use my Atrix as a media center only connected to my TV. Is it possible for me to set it up to run without a digitizer/touchscreen and only use with my TV and a wireless mouse/keyboard?
Thanks

Yes, it's possible. Just plug the cellphone and the keyboard / mouse to the dock (in case they work via USB dongle / not bluetooth) and it's set to work the way you want.

Unfortunately, that's not possible. The usual microUSB / female USB cables, as used with a lot of other smartphones, doesn't work with the atrix, our phone needs an external power outlet to be able to work with USB devices. You can either use the multimedia Dock or a 'custom' cable, I saw some time ago in youtube a tutorial teaching how to make a custom one, or maybe you can find it in ebay (not sure, never looked for it, to be sincere).

the cable you are talking about is called udb otg ( on the go), switch the phone's usb port into host mode.. only drawback is that atrix can't supply power to the usb, you must use an external power source for the devicr attached

I managed to use my atrix with the lapdock for around a month while I sourced a new digitizer and it worked great. I would recommend that you find a work and play kit second hand as I often use the webtop for watching on-demand tv and someone is working on a full resolution xbmc port that would work great with the remote. You might also be able to use the usb host ports to mount a fat32 hd as a media drive. The atrix can work really well without its digitizer.

I too am interested in this as I have an Atrix 4G with a broken screen. I was thinking about buying a device like the Roku or the MK802. I guess I could just get the Motorola Entertainment Center from Amazon.
Is there a ROM that would be best for the purpose of using the Atrix as a TV only device.
I posted a tutorial in general for using hdmi and tablet mode with the backlight for the digitizer off. This might give you ideas for using the hdmi port with or without your favorite hdmi enabled Moto dock.

MHL HDMI Adapter and USB OTG Simultatneously

How can I use HDMI and USB keyboard mouse at the same time with my Note?
My note has no screen. But I would love to use it on an old monitor with a keyboard.
I saw a few other threads about this but none seemed to solve the problem.
Anyone know if there is a compatible dock that charges, hdmi output, and usb input at the same time that works.
thanks!
