Hey, I have a noob question, will rooting my Optimus One void the warranty? I know I could've done a simple Google search but I'm getting a lot of conflicting answers :-( z4root doesn't work for some reason (error parsing the package) so I might not be able to unroot it. I live in India if that makes any difference.

Yes, it does. But if you're lucky, they don't always check if you've rooted or not. And you can always un-root your phone before taking it to the repair center
how to runroot
just factory reset right before you go to the service. they can't accuse you of rooting if you wiped the evidence.

Can you unroot it with SuperOneClick? A reason I wanted root access is to get rid of the preloaded crap apps, how do I undo THAT assuming I need service?
Sorry if I sound paranoid

Hi!
Is there any way that i can unlock my phone without rooting? I know there are sites that you can pay to give you the code by providing your IMEI.
I'm interested in a way that is free and without rooting.
I know, rooting can bring benefits but i'd rather not do it since my phone works brilliant the way it is. Plus i'm not interested (at the moment,at least)in flashing ROMs. I'm happy with stock
So, is there any way?

Why not root it, unlock it, and then flash back to stock un-rooted?
1.Can you tell me please what are the downsides of rooting? I mean, if i decide to root it and leave it that way i'm more prome to get viruses or does it affect the phone performances or ... any "bad" thing?
2. If i root it, unlock it and then i want to un-root it back, will i have the same, exactly stock rom that i had before with no loss in phone's performance, stock apps etc?

Downside number one: You void your warranty, technically.
There are really no other downsides in my view. If you grab a copy of your carrier ROM's kernel version, you can always flash back to it via Odin, and nobody will ever know that you rooted it, once you reset the custom binary counter, of course.
Rooting simply gives you administrative level control over your phone, which by rights, you should have had from the beginning. It's not going to make your phone explode, or give you a virus, etc.
I have a small echo-like noise now that I hear during phone calls on my phone. I think it is a hardware issue because I don't hear it on my bluetooth headset. I called Verizon 800 number the other night because I was wondering about the 4G outage and mentioned my audio problem while I was on the phone with her. She said if I call back from another phone, tech support would connect to my Thunderbolt and troubleshoot the audio problem, and if its unfixable they would send me another Thunderbolt.
I am wondering if I need to unroot before I do this....would tech support be able to tell if my phone was rooted and thus void the warranty and not be able to do anything for me? What should I do?
Bare minimum I'd install the stock rom on there, I don't believe they would dig far enough to see if fastboot is unlocked.
As for the title question Yes, they can tell if rooted.
I don't think they can tell Cuz I called yesterday Cuz my screen is messing up they called me back on another line and wanted me to do a factory reset but didn't know that I was already on GB

The only thing I can think of, and I'm no expert or anything so this is just a guess, is that they could look at the software version of the phone, and if it isn't the latest, or a previous release for this phone, then they could speculate that you are rooted, though I don't think that alone would hold up in court if it ever came to that.
When the support rep told the OP that they would "connect to my Thunderbolt and troubleshoot the audio problem", I think they were going by the standard "don't call tech support from the phone that's having the issue" practice.
Can they remotely connect to our phones ? I wasn't aware that they could.

Over the phone? Absolutely Not
Correct, that's what they said ("don't call tech support from the phone that's having the issue" practice.)
So should I still unroot to be safe before I call them or no....
What ROM are you using ?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
If you want to be on the safe side, make a nand backup, flash a stock ROM, call them, then restore the backup. I'll pretty sure they can't tell if you have a custom recovery.

Don't know how they do it, (simple user here) and not the first time I've seen this asked or answered. If you're bored jump on every TB forum your on and I'm sure you'll find your curiosity satisfied. Maybe it was on BAMF? I could care less how they do it. (No ins here) Call technical support and ask them what rom your on and how dare they know that.

Liquid AOSP 3.2.
I unrooted just to be safe and the tech rep never said anything and I got them to send me a new sim card and if that doesn't solve my problem (which I don't think it will), then they will send me a new thunderbolt.
When I rooted again after the phone call it wouldn't let me restore my rom and I got stuck in a boot loop. Luckily I had rom zip's on my sd card, so I installed one from scratch, reflashed cwm via rom mgr again, then it let me restore it.
Very weird, and I was terrified I jacked my phone up.

Hmm keep looking, I won't be at a pc till tomorrow maybe. But like I said I have no way to confirm only what I've read which is what I do. And that was second hand information. As most of this is. I'm really trying to remember because I know these site searching's are lacking at best.
I just recently used to work for at&t customer care and if vzw is anything like them, the only way they can maybe tell is if you have an unlimited data plan plus unofficial tethering app. Or if you send it in for warranty/Asurion replacement. Otherwise i don't really see how they could see in any way if it was rooted

That is understandable, thank you. Still gotta get to my pc. I know people have called in on their rooted devices for certain reasons and been called out only to deny. And of course unroot before going in. For whatever reason. Sticking to it.
That's why I asked what ROM. A support rep could simply tell the person to read them a version # that will be different than "stock".

this is true, didn't think about that. You could always just write the stock version number before flashing to be safe

Sorry mate but if you dont want to root your phone, then it looks like you will have to pay.
P.S You should step into the world of being rooted, you will never want to go back.
Id love to root. My only concern is the warranty. Even if I pay for it they can't generate the code right away. It takes them over a week and I Dont have that long.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
And if I was to root can it be undone if I ever need to send my phone to the manufacturer for repair? Can they detect its been rooted
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Just flash a stock rom or even the kernal only and you will be unrooted.
Its the counter which is the usual issue - and triangleaway will deal with that or if your bootloader is old enough a Jig.
Thanks guys but I'm a girl and Dont really understand all these technical terms lol but thanks for the info

If you root your phone then it will void your waranty, they can tell if you have rooted by your counter, their is a way to reset this if you ever need to take it back under waranty. The only problem is that the methods for resetting your counter are not %100 and can break your phone. If you decide to root your phone then the guide in my signature, will help with this is will show you what you need to read and where to get everything you need also.
Has anyone heard of micro box? I seen it on YouTube to find an unlock code for various devices. Has anyone tried this method to unlock?

I have just checked out the website and it is a paid for service, as you buy the equipment and use it to unlock phones.
Oh this is so frustrating there must be a way without rooting
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Not without paying for it. If you want it for free, you'll need to root.
Just root the phone and unlock it
I never cared about warenty cuz if your phone is with you for months then its really rare that you find something wrong in the hardware section and if your phone broke which means not booting don't panic cuz as i can remember you can install a Rom on it and your ready to go
Before you go anywhere i recommend you to back up your phone and install lookout incase you lost it and write down your imei number
Have fun and be careful

I am sure their is a way,in some corner of the web that you could do it for free, but i wouldent trust any services like that and members wont talk about it on XDA, even if their were.
Why won't they?

Because they would see the risk in doing that, and would recommend rooting, you will get a lost more support if you rooted your phone, and unlocked it that way. rooting your phone is a big leap but once you have done it and know how easy it is then you would be glad, just dont root if you are dead set on not doing it. If you do decide to root your phone then you will need to get your geek on and learn how to do it, to avoid any problems.
I figure I can just use Odin to unroot, but I need help finding a good stock ROM. I heard the NoWipe version isn't the best to use because they might search for SuperUser apps and deny the warranty, and that's all I've found.
Thanks

I think you'd be fine to uninstall the super user app. I think you can use the no wipe tar. But they might update it. Or they might not. If you don't have the custom screen on boot send it in.

Oh, I'm sorry I should specify. My screen is broken, as in I can't see anything on it. Not just cracked glass. So it's not necessarily just a matter of uninstalling super user. Since I'm not sure I can do that with a broken screen.
