[Q] HTC Thunderbolt IP address - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
New to the forum. Had a droid, upgraded to a Thunderbolt and love it.
I have a question about my ip address for my phone. I noticed first with speedtest.net that the closest server to me is in NJ. I researched and saw that this happens a lot. People in California were seeing the closest server in Arizona.
The thing is now, I did an IP search to see what my IP address was on 4G&3G and it's saying Bridgewater, NJ. I'm in Rochester, so I was wondering if this is happening because of some IP submask or something else? If not, i'm wondering if I am going through like a 'middle-man' server and getting slowing speeds. Sometimes when I surf, the phone holds up, even on Google with 4 signal bars.
My friend has the TB, lives in Orlando and his phone's IP is Orlando.
Does anyone have a similar issue? Could it be an issue with my SIM card? I took it to the store and the tech guy had no clue. He just said that Bridgewater is one of the corporate locations, so maybe that's why my IP is like that.
If anyone wants to check their IPs, this is the website I searched: ip address locator in google and went to geobytes. I can't post links because I'm a newbie.

Anyone have any ideas?

I'm out on Long Island and it still gave me the default as the NJ server. I just into the settings and changed it to NY. I figured it probably picked Jersey due to the NY one likely being higher traffic.

I'm not just talking about in speedtest.net. That's where I noticed it first but I checked what my ip address was and where it's located. It's located in NJ. I am in upstate NY, so I'm wondering if all the phones in the area are lumped under some subnet or if I'm having some strange connection issue.

I'm also from Rochester and it picks NJ as the closest server. Oh well, doesn't bother me.

I'm in Norfolk, VA and sometimes my speedtest gets done through Richmond, sometimes Baltimore, and sometimes Washington, D.C. Go figure. I think it just picks a random server with the least number of hops and the most available bandwidth at the time you try to do your speedtest.

Im in Delaware and my IP is from NJ.
Its probably just where verizon's closest data center is

As far as the city/state associated with your IP, you are almost certainly going through a gateway at some point, and wouldn't surprise me at all if it were well off from your actual physical location.

[Q] Anyone else having 4G issues in NYC right now?

As per title, no 4G connectivity right now, happened out of the blue. 3g works (albeit slowly). I want to rule out hardware/software issues.
Any insight?
As of this morning, I cannot get an ip address on 4G in Arkansas. It hangs on the "obtaining IP address from Sprint" step, never gets one.
Interestingly I had 4G connectivity for a few hours today late morning/early afternoon.
But you're mountain time correct? so that puts me 2 hours ahead and this could be a network wide outage. I wonder what this means altogether.
4g doesnt work for me right now either. Im in brooklyn.
I'm right next to George Washington bridge. No 4G, full bars though
thank you for this post i called sprint they say no other complaints in this area (bronx, ny 10475) 3g is crawling!!!!!!!!!! 4g is sorta ok but something is wrong for sure!!
I got mine fixed. I was replacing toolbox with busybox when rooting. Apparently, you need the original toolbox to connect to 4G. If anyone did the same thing... HTH

[Q] Wimax not connecting

I can't connect to wimax on my Evo3D. It never progresses beyond "Obtaining IP address from Sprint".
I've tried rebooting and updating profile. Anyone know what else I can try?
It may be the network because I tested another phone and it also is stuck at Obtaining IP address...
Is anyone else in Atlanta seeing the same thing?
Yep, my Nexus S 4G won't connect either, goes from Obtaining IP address to Disconnected. I'm in Duluth at the moment, but I couldn't connect at my apartment in Buckhead this morning either.
not working in northern va
Connected and worked well in NC this morning.
Sprint CS told me they've gotten reports of Wimax problems in Atlanta. They don't have an ETA for repair.
You aren't replacing toolbox with busybox, right? I did that and it made my wimax hang exactly like that.
Its been happening to me in the philly area since the 4th. It was sad I was telling everyone how awesome my phone is and then I whipped it out and the web and youtube was timing out.

My phone has not been modified other than installing SPB launcher.
It's actually connecting to 4G now, but if I turn on Hotspot, 4G goes back to hanging on "Obtaining IP address from Sprint".
I can connect but I am unable to pull data.

Jackson Michigan 3G speeds sucks

Any body from Jackson Michigan thats getting good 3g speeds? I'm asking because everywhere I go my data sucks and I was wondering if it was the area or my phone? Im only getting 75kbps and lower.
Sprint simply has ****ty 3G. For me it ranges between 100kbps and 500kbps. If I'm on a freeway next to a tower at non-peak I get 700kbps-900kbps. But thats because I live in a densely populated place so there are many many towers. It's not your phone. It's sprint..\
I just ran a speed test on 3G just south of Lansing and got 1436kb down and over 300kb up.

I don't know anything about Jackson, Michigan, but there is something VERY wrong if you're only getting 75kbps.... My first guess is that your location data is screwy, and the network is having a hard time 'locating' your phone... Open a locating app (like Google Maps) and see if your phone's location is EXACT... If it's not, then:
First, make sure your compass is calibrated: (easiest way is to download Compass app from the market for free.)
Second, clear the location data using the ##3282 (or whatever the code is-there's a bunch of threads on how to do this)... AND wiping data from Google Maps under settings/applications/manageapplications/allapplications AND in Titanium if you use it.
Third, update your profile and your PRL with Sprint.
If all that doesn't help, I'd take the phone back, if I were you. 75kbps = basically an unusable device, IMHO.
Good luck.. Let us know how it works out for you.
EDIT: UNLESS YOU LIVE RIGHT NEXT TO A TOWER???
If that's the case, no amount of 'tinkering' is gonna help you.. You'd have to switch carriers if you wanted a reliable data speed at home.

Was actually just in Jackson Michigan, was at Prime Cuts. I was testing some Sweet Little Paws Cheesecake there because I'm most likely doing cheesecake for my wedding cake. Regardless though, I was hitting pretty decent speeds. I'd say a good 500kbps-900kbps. Just a little less that what I am used to, 1000+kbps.
I live in Jackson and yes the 3g speed sucks. Have you tried changing the CDMA to Automatic using EPST? It helped mine dramatically.
Sucks in Detroit too. I remember when I first got my Evo 4g on launch day I got 2200k down downtown on a Sunday morning. I watched speeds drop to almost nothing, now if I get 200k down on a Sunday morning it's a miracle.
The first thing i tries was switching my EPST to automatic. Seems it mad it worst before doing that i was only getting 125kbps. I called sprint multiple times and they had me update PRL and network, I even did the hands free activation again. Im thinking its just my phone. Im just trying to a least be able to get 600kbps-1.4mbps what sprint says the average 3g speeds are. I have a friend with att (iphone 4) and where ever we're at he's getting 2-3mbps. smh And i cant even get 100kbps on a good day. I love sprint been with them for years they just gotta get this data speed up, I use my phone for internet a lot.
There is something severely wrong in se lower michigan with the speeds for 3g. Its not bad in one spot.. It's bad everywhere. I update my prl and it's been ****. I barely get no bars and it struggles to load pages and kills my battery quick. I'm thinking of calling sprint cause I hear it's been a problem in the southeast lower michigan area.

weird speedtest locations?

Just wondering if anyone has tethered to a pc, ran a speedtest, and it shows you in another state?
I'm in San Francisco,CA and it's saying I'm in Wichita, KS...
?
Im running the latest Clean Rom if that matters, and only google gps is on
Happens to me all the time too, I never get decent speedtest locations because of it, I'm guessing it's a 4G connection thing.
The fix I have to do to get a test from close to me is connect to a wifi source, let it find that location, then stay in the speed test app and turn wifi on back to 4G and keep it on the location wifi found.
I believe if you turn on the GPS and let it get a lock it will update to your nearest server. Whats up in Wichita? I seem to travel there all the time
Edit: Re-read OP. Not sure what you mean by "google" GPS but I was talking about insuring that the actual GPS receiver is activated. And, BTW, your boys better win those 3 games they have "in-hand".
are you sure you are not in Wichita,KS? ARE YOU!?!
Thanks everybody, nothing wrong with Kansas, kinda a Jayhawk fan.. Il mess around with gps locks and whatnot, just wanted to see if I was the only one

You see my "edit". Just givin you a hard time about your Sharks.. What the H E Double Hockey Sticks has happened to them?
<End Hijack>
While having wifi tether running, I ran maps and got a lock on my real location, refreshed speedtest.net on my pc,... still Kansas lol, It really wants me to be there

lol, yeah, if they don't make the playoffs, they will be ripped apart and traded away... I dont mind either way
Location finding can take several routes...
via provider towers: this is the one that generally has you in your neighborhood, or part of town, but never the right street.
via gps: dead on.
via wifi: usually dead on if your routers mac address has been sniffed/mapped out by those google cars and other 3rd parties that pick up signals all over town and pinpoint their locations.
via ip: generally pretty good in getting your region, but if the ip isn't in the big database in the cloud accurately it'll just say 'USA' and puts you in Wichita, KS because that's pretty close to dead center of the US
I use the phone's GPS and I still get stuck out in Lexington, KY, or Wichita, so I do the fix I did on he first page and it fixes it.

Sprint's Voice and Data outages

Has anyone been having issues with Sprint's overall Network?...
For the past 5 days i have been experiencing MAJOR issues with "NOW" network! ????
Called twice to Sprint and all they have to tell me is they're either "updating" their towers or I'm using my data during "peek" hours!!! But then, i go online and Google "Sprint's outages map" and come to find out, Long Beach CA has been affected with outages along with other cities in the US since the 23rd of August! You would figure that Sprint customer service would be just a lil more helpful than lie to customers. Guess not!...
What about the rest of you guys?
Visting family here in Greenfield Wisconsin.... lte down last night and tonight only 3g... seems to only be late at night though.

Both my wife and I have been getting stuck in 3G a LOT lately in the North Atlanta, GA area... Although my Note 3 doesn't hold LTE as well as it should after the KitKat upgrade, cycling mobile data off and back on usually fixes it. But for the last week or so, sometimes I can't get LTE back no matter what. And then it just comes back when I quit paying attention to it. But I'll be happy if they're actually trying to improve things, like they've been saying for the last how many years?
This happened when they did the network vision upgrade in my area. Took about 2 or 3 months for it to stabilize. We'll worth it now honestly
Sent from my SM-G900P using Tapatalk
They will not report an "outage" if its network vision related or its being upgraded.
Many times if they are adding extra nodes or adding more bandwidth you will lose everything for a few hours, or you will notice your connection constantly dropping and reconnecting ( or at a lower signal) because you are trying to connect to a different tower since the one closest to you is offline being worked on.
The problem is.. everyone else is trying to also connect to that other tower, which overloads it- so people get kicked off or get the lovely 0.02kbps speedtest results.
You will only see an "outage" reported ( that shows up on the web) when either something major happens like a tornado/hurricaine/storm that caused damage, or if some idiot from another utility company accidentally cuts the fiber that goes from the tower to the switch
And in direct correlation to the adding capacity theory, I noticed Llama was not always showing me at home anymore (Llama uses cell towers to perform actions based on location). Did a re-learn area, and two new cells popped up... The sprint upgrade map shows a LOT of "data speed upgrades" in my area, including the tower closest to my house.

The bad thong is sprint want tell you anything other then we have upgrades coming serivxe may be interrupted for a short period
With that said I thunk they have great costumer service
I'm always having problems with their "overall network"
I'm down in Orange County, CA and I have had no issues.
Having the same issues here in CT. I brought my phone in for a repair and the rep said nothing was wrong with my phone. But the towers I was on. The tech on the phone it was hard to believe, I was having issues because, I used over 27gb in the past month. I said yeah, I used about a gig a day streaming .... But, the data is spotty at most, where my streams gets grainy during playback. And before I was getting 8-14 mbs down. Now, I get 3mbs-240kbs down then internet connection failed and this is on 4g.

I had this issue here in FL. I called sprint and I was told they are upgrading the towers around the area(past 3 days) now everything seems to be fine. At least, they credited me $15 on my current bill.
