[Q] Installing Clockworkmod/Rom vs. Rooting - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Total noob....especially when it comes to android so don't be too brutal.
I followed all directions to install clockwork, the latest vegan, and flash. As far as I can tell everything went well. I do get some force closes but nothing major.
But when I tried to get the Android Market up and running it says my device hasn't been rooted. This also occurs when I try to install some other apps such as busybox.
Am I confusing rooting with installing clockwork and custom roms?
I apologize if this is an insanely dumb question.

If you successfully installed Vegan 5.1, you should have root access. In your app drawer, do you have an app called Superuser with a little ninja icon?

No I don't have superuser. But I have a ton more apps that with the stock from viewsonic so I assumed I installed vegan successfully.

I don't use Vegan, but try going to Settings ==> About Tablet, and that might show whether or not you have Vegan installed.
Jim

Re apply rom. Wipe data, cash, davlic using cwm then flash the vegan rom then wipe data and cash. When it restarts look for super user in the app drawer. It should be there.

Thank you I will try that tonight.

Reinstalled everything........wiped everything during the process.
It appears I am running Vegan but a soon as I try to open the Android Market app it immediately closes. I can't follow the steps to install the market.

[Q] need help fast!

I recently installed nightly build #6 of cm7 for the first time and I don't have market, Gmail, etc. I have searched the forums and have already tried installing Google apps via rom manager. My phone enters recovery for a split second then rebooted and still no apps. Also my Rom manager is no longer the premium version. Any help would be appreciated!

I don't use any of the nightly builds of CM7.
However, I don't understand why you can't just place the apk onto your root and click to install.
Or better yet, use root explorer and just place the entire apk into the apps folder.
Those 2 aren't options?
Unfortunately I'm not near a computer and I'm brand new to cm7 so I wasn't sure if there is just a quick fix. Also I would like to know how I can get my apps back without having titanium anymore and no market..

Problem after flashing wolfs stock gingerbread rom

I flashed wolfs v3.5 and then update 3.7 earlier today and since then I have been having trouble installing apps from the android market. I can't install dolphin browser and es file explorer. I have downgraded to 2.1 and then updated back to 2.3.3 stock but the problem persists. Is there anything I can do to get these apps to install again. I don't understand it, I tried dolphin browser mini and that installed fine. Is there anything on my sd card that's preventing these apps from installing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have only started rooting and experimenting with custom roms so I am a bit confused as to why these apps don't install. I am now on stock rom..no root or xrecovery installed yet.
does it say incompatibility from the market?

[Q] Newest Market and CM7 causes FCs

With the newest market update, I am constantly getting force closes with it. I am running CM7 (2.3.5, kernel 2.6.35.7) and the market version in question would be 3.1.3. I have tried clearing the app cache and uninstalling the update. I also tried using one of the old market apks, but it just updates and I am back to square one.

Same here. I a tually have a backup of a MIUI.us ROM loaded with all my app's. I load that and do update any apps needed. Use Titanium to backup the update. Then reload over to my CM7 and restore the app's freshly updated. Its a pain but I don't know what else to do for now.
I just noticed today that the Market Feedback is version 2.3.4, which I wonder if is related to the kernel version.

That was the first thing I did. I even made sure to wipe my phone 3 times. All I did was install nightlies 176 (then also did the same for 177/178) and first thing I installed after setup was the new v3.1.3 market. It still FCed. So I wiped again and tried v3.0.27 and now it FCs. Which is confusing the crap out of me I can't go backwards.

Actually had to go back to the 03/07/2011 version of GAPPS. I flashed that under root. Then fixed permissions. Rebooted and opened the old market. Agreed to the terms. Sat and downloaded ROM Manager (just picked a random app to see if it would crash). Downloaded and installed fine. Closed the old market. Noticed my launcher icon changed from the old market icon to the new one. Opened the market again and it had updated. Checked "My Apps" and was finally able to update my needed apps.
On a side note I opened up Titanium Backup PRO and noted three apps that were new.
- FOTA Kill v1.0
- Google Backup Transport v3.0
- Talk v1.3 (no idea why that's a new app)
Haven't rebooted yet, but that's a step in the right direction at least....

goto your system settings > languages menu and just change the language to english. This should fix it. I also tried many things, but this worked. using cm7 on desire Z.

Yeah I tried that and it did not work. Even selecting English again did not work. But at least there are options, as some work for different setups!
Weird issue but I haven't heard much about it since last week. Hopefully something like this doesn't pop up with every update!

Rooted phone unable to get android market or google apps

Hi everyone,
I followed the instructions here: http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/2012/01/02/nook-tablet-rooting-guide-complete-walkthrough-video/
to root my nook tablet. It seems to work. At the very least I am able to side load one of the apps I wanted, however, I am unable to install the google market or even find an apk for it along with some of the google apps. My nook settings say its version 9.9.9 now if that helps.
Is there something I can do to get the google market installed? Or is there a way to reset this back to stock and use a better method if that is a preferred way. Thanks in advance!
EDIT: Or is my phone even rooted? I just tried busybox and it said I was not rooted...

It sounds like you're not rooted, but rooting isn't all that hard. Check out this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354487
Alternatively, if you've got an SD card and are interested, you can try this super easy method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583
Both of those methods include gApps, if I'm not mistaken, which also means that they'll get the Android Market installed for you.

The Nook&Zergy zip file that is mentioned in the first link I believe is the same .zip I used when I followed the instructions for the other link I posted. It said it had the gApps but never installed them for some reason and I was never able to get them to install. It gave an error message instead. Everything else worked though.

[Q] How to downgrade SafeStrap from 3.63 to 3.11?

Hi,
I have an XT-912 with SafeStrap 3.63 installed. I'd like to install Eclipse 2.2 but my understanding is that I would have to have SS 3.11 instead. I have the 3.11 apk and was planning just to run the upgrade process described on the hash-of-codes website in reverse (removing 3.63 and installing 3.11), but was wondering if there were any tricks that needed to be employed or possible problems to be aware of.
Thanks.
PS - not sure this matters but just in case: this is an old phone with no carrier service, just using it with wifi.

Open Safestrap 3.63 app from App Drawer, click Uninstall Recovery and after that uninstall Safestrap 3.63 app from your phone.
Then install Safestrap 3.11 Apk, open Safestrap 3.11 app from App Drawer and click Install Recovery.
Anyway, click Thanks if I helped you

Really appreciate the tip but I can't get it to work: now hangs on the open screen and then FC with "Unfortunately, Safestrap has stopped."
I think I did everything right - uninstalled as instructed, used the 3.11 apk from Hashcode's goo-dot-im site (sorry, too few posts to post links), installed as instructed. After it didn't work, I uninstalled 3.11, booted into stock recovery and cleared cache, downloaded the apk again and reinstalled. Still didn't work.
Any thoughts?

I tried it too and I have the same results... I don't know why, maybe it needs a factory reset in order to return to a previous Safestrap version... One more thought, after uninstalling 3.65 try to delete everything related to Safestrap and TWRP from the internal storage, then reboot to Motorola's recovery and wipe cache & dalvik, then try 3.11. It's just a thought, I haven't tried it myself, if it doesn't work then I don't know why...
You might need to delete the safestrap folder from sdcard also.
Haven't tried it but thats what I would do.
Thanks guys but no luck.
And now when I re-install 3.63 it thinks I don't have root. (Verified in Terminal Emulator.)
Oh well, I guess I'll either live with stock or have to start from scratch (e.g. with Matt's utility).
I'm running SS 3.53, trying the same issue. the problem I'm having is that I don't have a working ROM besides Stock, when i go to Stock ROM slot, Safestrap is disabled, and isn't located in the app drawer, I've tried other ROMS for 4.1.2 and they fail during flash, almost immediately. Any suggestions?
