What should I do? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So basically let me try to make this clear:
I bought a HTC thunderbolt already running bolted0.35.
I returned to stock and rooted(made a backup of bolted), installed cwm, s-offed. I'm on 1.12.605.6
Can I restore that backup? I'm pretty sure that backup was on 1.12.605.9
If not, what should I do? I'm fully rooted and everything as mentioned

Restoring a backup will replace everything in that backup, no need to clear cache or anything, a mirror image you can say.

[Q] Backing Up Data

I couldn't find any statement that answers my question. My friend is interested in rooting his phone to backup his apps with TB. His phone is currently stock (4.5.141). Is there a root method where the phone is not reset to factory? It would defeat the point of rooting if he looses all his data.
Thanks for taking the time to read my question.

If he backs it up through titanium he can use a root browser and copy the file to ext-sdcard, factory reset doesn't erase that. You could also put the backup on a computer via USB if he doesn't have an ext-sdcard. Be sure to put the file back in the proper directory after wiping.

It was my understanding TB would not be able to backup anything unless it had root access in the first place..

Oh sorry I misread your OP. Yes titanium needs root to perform backups. If you try the USB method you can pull files from the phone and sdcard and store them on your computer.
Edit- also just rooting shouldn't reset data, unless your unlocking the bootloader as well

I'm sorry can you point me to the thread that has this USB method? Also do you know of any method that roots without deleting his data?

Updating ROM but keeping data.?

This is going to sound like a very noobish question, but I was wondering if you could update your rom, then after you've wiped everything if it was possible to get all your apps and stuff back? I was thinking you could just make a backup then restore only data (or everything but system) but I wasn't sure. Any input is greatly appreciated.

You don't always have to wipe data when updating a rom. What rom are you specifically speaking about? But if it were to happen where you had to wipe data, titanium backup + donate is your best option for backing up and restoring apps.

[Q] Why can't I make an update.zip of my apps in Tibu?

I'm on CM10 alpha 2, and I want to upgrade to 2.99999999. Since you can't flash roms on our cm10, I need to make an update.zip, sbf, then flash 2.99999999. However, I can't make one. After I've selected the apps, and Tibu starts to make the update.zip, Tibu says it couldn't make it. After retrying, Tibu instantly said it couldn't make one.
Is there any way to fix this, or can I get to 2.99999999 and keep my data another way?
Stop what you are doing. lol.
Just SBF to 2.3.4, root, install the bootstrap and flash the latest CM10 and the Gapps in bootstrap recovery. I have never used an update.zip to update a ROM and dont believe thats the proper way to do it.
I am only trying to make an update. Zip for my apps and their data, not for the whole rom.

Oh. Well I have never done that either. I use Titanium Backup for my apps. If you havent already, try it out. It works great. Just backup and restore your apps and app data though. Some people have problems with backing up and restoring system data.
Sorry, in forgot to say something. I'm using titanium backup to make the update.zip.

Oh wait, you did say that. I dont know why you need to make an update.zip. Just backup your apps, flash the ROM, download Titanium Backup again and Restore your apps. Maybe the update.zip is just a feature I have never used. Sorry.
Tibu starts to make the update.zip, Tibu says it couldn't make it.

I have never used that option, but I'm guessing that it just doesn't work in alpha 2
The reason I don't want to do that is it takes lot of time.

Well I've been around this thread and have used the droid x2 for over a year and have never heard of anyone use that method. So it's probably going to be likely that no one will know about the problem you are having. Sorry to say.
Sorry but it won't work on our x2

Do you have the Pro Key version (Paid) ?
The free version cannot do a update.zip.

Create an UPDATE.Zip

Hi guys/gals. I have just rooted/unlocked my Atrix, and am flashing new ROMS. One thing I have run into though is the fact that these new ROMS don't come pre-installed with all of the apps that I want. So, I was thinking I could create an update package that will push all of "my" apps that I use on a regular to the ROM I just flashed instead of installing one by one via play store. I followed the advice posted by a Senior Member here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732957 but this isn't working for me. When I attempt to use CWM to install this update.zip file, all I get is updated failed. I do not see the reason for the failure, just that it failed. Can a more experienced user here, assist with what I am doing incorrectly please and thank you.

When I run Show Log from CWM I don't see anything that is relevant to the reason it failed?
OK, I see your problem. You're using a way outdated procedure for creating flashable ZIPs. That is a procedure for creating Amend-based ZIPs which have long been abandoned, only Edify-based ZIPs are supported now. I think your best bed would be to get some ready-made flashable ZIP (of some ROM for example) and modify it according to your preferences.
What about using one of the app backup apps? like what i do is i started on gb, used go backup pro, backed up the apps and data for the apps. then i switched roms, reinstalled go backup pro, and restored the apps and data

I attempted this procedure with zip me, but when I went to actually install the zip created with this app, It said install failed. I know Titanium Backup Pro (paid edition) offers this solution, but I do not have a full paid version. I *thought* it would be simple enough to just create my own install script as I have the .apk files needed, just can't get the script set-up properly.

This thread is over a year old, but is this more along the lines of the syntax I would need to follow and a good guide for me to follow?

This app looks very comparable to Titanium Backup (and it's free which is great!). I am not seeing the setting though of how to choose which apps to make an installable zip from. Can you explain that piece to me please?

It looks like I would have to restore each app on a individual basis?
I was hoping for a way to have all them batch restored at one time.

there is an option along the bottom of the screen called batch restore and batch backup. using these will speed up the process of keeping things up to date with backups, and speed up the process of restoring

How to restore deleted cwm nandroid backup?

I own the g2 vs980. I am running malladus. I had a nandroid backup of cleanrom. In an effort to free up space late last night I opened cwm app and deleted my backup if clean rom. I would like to recover it. I know of tools like diskdigger apk, but I don't know if it will recognize the format since (I believe) inside the backup file folder there are many files that comprise the nandroid backup. Any help or direction is greatly appreciated. I did not do any factory resets since the delete. I know the files should still be there. I have done very little on the phone so the data should still be intact... for now. Thanks
