Updating ROM but keeping data.? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

This is going to sound like a very noobish question, but I was wondering if you could update your rom, then after you've wiped everything if it was possible to get all your apps and stuff back? I was thinking you could just make a backup then restore only data (or everything but system) but I wasn't sure. Any input is greatly appreciated.

You don't always have to wipe data when updating a rom. What rom are you specifically speaking about? But if it were to happen where you had to wipe data, titanium backup + donate is your best option for backing up and restoring apps.

I'm thinking of going to either viper4g or OMJ 2.2 odex from stock with goodies JB

But is it not possible to do it inside of twrp? Like could you restore only data from a backup?

Upgrade with data?

I am new to these forms and was wondering if there was a good walk-through/guide for changing your phone data over when you are upgrading to a newer version of the same rom.
Thanks to your forms already I have no problem switching roms but I do have a few favorites I would like to keep updated without starting fresh. Pointing me in the right direction or any advice would be much appreciated!
-thanks

I may have solved my own question but I would like some further opinion's. I upgraded GSB from 2.1 to 2.4 then I merged all my old data to this version using the Recovery Mod... pushed new Google apps update and all seems fine. Forsee any problems with the current method?

Don't know what you mean by the "Recovery Mod".
I use the method I outline in my post here; about the middle of my post, in response to PieceKeepr, starting with my third paragraph to him.
"TB" in my post is "Titanium Backup" on the Android Market.
Ya what I ment by "Recovery Mod" was the Rom Manager ClockworkMod. Will check out your post, thanks for the advice.

I'm still not sure what ClockworkMod has to do with merging data, but as long as you know what you mean, that's what's important! Maybe you meant you did a no wipe (Dalvik wipe only) update? Sorry I'm having trouble understanding.
Not quite what I ment but probably the same result. What I did was Backup the whole current system (nand) currently running GSB 2.1 then did a system/data/dalvic wipe and installed the new GSB 2.4 CM7 booted it up with gapps etc. Made sure it was working. Then rebooted and went into recovery and restored just the user data.

Also thanks again for the advice on Titanium Backup it works good and I really like their use of just being able to restore data. I was looking for just an app, however because I am a Designer by trait I only overlooked their program because I didn't like the icon... silly me.

If you could bear with me for a little bit longer there's still something I'm missing. Recovery doesn't have anything having to do with restoring user data. Could you tell me exactly what menu option(s) you're referring to?

You're welcome. For a long time I swore by My Backup but once Titanium Backup was updated for Gingerbread it actually works better for me than it ever did all the other times I tried it before. Especially with the option in TB's preferences to restore apps to the locations that it backed them up from, since I use Apps2SD to move a lot of my apps to the SD card, so that's just one more thing I don't have to do.

I do like the data restore better on TB and of course MyBackup I did use before but it didn't have the options I was trying to find. Anyways what I did was make a complete system backup using ClockworkMod Recovery, then like I said installed the new version. Booted back to recovery and from the menu:
- backup and restore > - Advanced Restore >
Then I choose my backup "date bla bla"
- Restore data
Thats about it, hope that helps ~ let me know what you think.
I'm lazy, I just overlay my roms each time. I think I've been doing it this round since about GSB 1.6 or 1.7 when I had to do a full wipe because something got glitchy.
Previously when I was on KF, I went quite a while with flashovers.

Ah!!! Okay, I forgot about the Advanced Restore. Interesting! Thanks for explaining.
Ya, it seems to work pretty good, haven't found much wrong with it I do the same as you for the new versions.
1. Make a backup
2. Wipe
3. Install new version
4. Install gapps
5. Boot it
6. Reboot into recovery do the cache2cache
7. Restore data...

What should I do?

So basically let me try to make this clear:
I bought a HTC thunderbolt already running bolted0.35.
I returned to stock and rooted(made a backup of bolted), installed cwm, s-offed. I'm on 1.12.605.6
Can I restore that backup? I'm pretty sure that backup was on 1.12.605.9
If not, what should I do? I'm fully rooted and everything as mentioned

Restoring a backup will replace everything in that backup, no need to clear cache or anything, a mirror image you can say.

x2 nandroid restore question

Hi all, I recently had to do my first nandroid restore after going too zealous with some changes. (entirely user error, but thats why we backup first )
Anyway, This restore was the exact same rom made less than an hour before....so no changes there. It went pretty painless but I'm wondering if I should have wiped data or not? I did wipe dalvik and cache, but was not certain on data.
Thanks for your thoughts.
No you're fine, there's no need to wipe anything before a nandroid restore.

[Q] TB titanium Backup

Hellow guys, i was wondering how do you guys restore backup? Only the green and white lettered apps?
A little advice would be grateful
You only ever want to backup/restore User Apps & Data (from the Batch menu).

Yes I do it everytime when flashing new ROMS, but lately Ive done a clean install then i wondered what is the best way to restore my files.
I download all the apps first if moving to a different rom, although it should make no difference. My restores got messed up one time so this is how I go.

I don't think I'm understanding your problem/question.
Define 'clean install'. What 'files' do you mean in particular?

Clean install I mean I did a full wipe using mega script that formats cache dalvik data system preload ...
But thats not the question. It is when you restore via TB you onlly restore things in green and white? Everything in red you untick?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Just press on the tick in the top right corner, scroll down to 'restore' and select 'restore apps with missing data'. They are the apps you want.

Restoring data including apps and accounts.

Before I install a new ROM I always do a back up in recovery before I install the new ROM. Then I wipe everything before flashing the new ROM. Then I install the ROM. Then I do a restore of only the data from my back up. This reinstalls all of my apps and all of my account data. When I restore I simply uncheck boot and system and let the restore only be the data from my back up. This is a fast easy way rather than using titanium back up or similar. I'm not sure if this can be done going from sense to aosp. But I don't see why it would be a problem. Hope this helps some of you out there. I always wipe dalvik and cache between everything I do.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
From all I've ever read, yes, it would be a problem going from sense to AOSP, but I must admit I've never personally tried. I guess it (this method) wouldn't try to restore any sense apps, as they would be on the system/app partition, not /data.
From my Evo LTE, yup.
Depends, if it just restores data than I think not? Then again if your only trying to restore apps that be on data/app hmm. Test and find out? I wanna know! And stuck deep in the south horrid 3g and no additional rims in storage.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
Honestly the best way to restore accounts apps and data is to do a back-up then after you flash your new rom is to restore data from your back up with twrp. Then everything is done. Just uncheck boot and system from your back up. Very fast and simple. This can be done from sense to sense. And aosp to aosp or aokp.

If you mean system data then I've tried that coming from AOKP back to sense and it'll say "a reboot is required for changes to take affect" but it'll send you into a boot loop. Believe me I've hardbricked 2 EvoLTEs
