[Q] Telus Facsinate rooting Q - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have a Telus Fascinate, Since its basically the same this as the Vibrant "plus a d" Should I be following instructions on how to root it on this forum. I tried to root it a couple months ago with Bionix-x or something like that and it bricked my phone and I'm scared to try again.
Basically my question is what kernel should I use? I have a Mac, is there a better program that ODIN? Also, Whats the advantage of using a program like SGS downloaded from the marketplace to flash after I root the phone? Is it less risky? I DO NOT want to brick my phone again.
Sorry for being a noob here, There's not alot of Telus support here and I don't want to mess anything up. I used to have a Touch Pro that was very easy to switch rom's on...I miss the old days...
Thanks!

You should check out this thread. Great guide for Telus 'Fascinate' phones.

If you're working from the stock rom, then you shouldn't have to worry about having to use ODIN.
I generally only use it when I screw something up and need to go back to the stock rom. I'm not sure what you can use as an alternative to ODIN. I'm sure there's alternatives to ODIN, but I'm too lazy to find what they are.

[Q] i9000 firmware on vibrant?

Hey there, instead of waiting on the t-mobile version of froyo i thought about flashing my vibrant to the i9000 version (i use it in europe anyway - so i wanted to ask here if that is possible and how? I am a little confused with the different versions, roms, kernels, firmwares etc... somebody can guide in the right direction?
Sorry if thats been asked before - didnt found something useful with a quick search

Old post, but I am also wondering the same...
Samsung Captivate has xcaliburinhand's I9000 reoriented kernel, that can correct home-button, screen orientation issue. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808286
In other word, captivate can Odin flash any Samsung I9000 firmware + the patch and the phone will work without any issue.
How about Vibrant?

We obviously can't. You would potential hard brick your phone if you try such a thing or might get lucky and get a soft one instead.
the vibrant can do this same lol. There are multiple roms i can go and download right now off the i900 forum with no problems. just have to use the right tkernels
all it takes is research.. i havnt done it in while but i used to use dead horse kernel from eugene.. it worked with the i9000 roms.. but there were some things that need to be tweaked.

I really prefer official i9000 firmware instead of custom ROM.
( I am with T-mobile, but I got Captivate only because I want to try all official i9000 firmware including newest 2.3.3. )
I hope we get some genius can do the same in Vibrant forum.
You have to be careful when you say firmware. You CAN flash an i9k rom ONLY if it's a cwm format one (because that I know of, they'll be labeled if they come with an sbl).
As for Odin roms, unless you look at what is contained on the .tar file before flashing and replacing necessary files, then yes. But most people don't check anything before flashing and therefore mess up their rom and then ask for help.

Thanks for correction. Must have been w/ moto bit too long.
But the fact remain... Vibrant forum does not have a "magic-fix" for people just want to flash official i9000 to their phone.
Hm...
Can I flash only a SGS I9000 modem? What do I need to tweak/change to do this if it's even possible?
Because I've really ran out of options to make my T-Mo Vibrant run with european SIM cards in Europe, and that's my last hope.

There is no SGS-I9000, it is a GT-I9000 and I would say unless you are on an GT-I9000 rom then you can't flash a I9000 modem. I could be wrong but that's my educated guess.
lol i know, but ain't SGS short for Samsung Galaxy S
Anyway, I literally did every guide in the forums to make it work with european SIM (and no, the phone isn't locked... just doesn't detect any network), so flashing an I9000 firmware? No problem. Gonna try it this week to see if it works.
Well I am using it in Europe with no problem, the signal maybe a bit weak but still it probably the network. Maybe its just not unlocked properly, idk just guessing.

Odin??

What is "Odin" and what does it do? What kind of file is it? Should I have it downloaded?
Odin and tar.md5 files are Samsung's version of HTC's RUU and Moto's SBF files.
Oh ok I got it now! Thanks man! Should I have that downloaded to be safe? Is it required to root on the fascinate?
I have it available just as a precaution in case something goes wrong. It isn't required to root your phone, but it can be useful if it stops working or if you want to go back to stock.
Ok by the way I have a quick question on rooting...Is superoneclick safe?
I've never used super one click root, but if you install a custom rom, they tend to all be pre-rooted.
How would I install a rom without being rooted?!!!
Odin.

Instead of asking questions, you should read up on the stickies thread in the development section. Evrrything you want to know about Odin and roms is there. First hand experience helps as well.

Making any changes without having or knowing the basics of odin is not a good idea. I don't think any of those apps play nice with this phone and soft bricking is likely. Best to learn how to recover before your forced to

Is this right?

Hi, I got my galaxy s2 in the post a week ago, but it was second hand, apparently unwanted upgrade. Anyway, is this an official kernal please, as I haven't seen it on any other device on YouTube when watching a meriad of reviews. So I have attached a screen shot of the kernal version. By the way this should be a sim free UK modal. I know this is random, but I have stupidly got my self a bit worried, could someone help me please? Thanks very much

It looks like they've possibly upped the kernel, but definitely rooted it. I very seriously doubt there's anything to worry about though. Looks like someone did the work for you
Nothing wrong there, you're rooted. If you're worried you could flash a different kernel! Easy as pie if you follow the threads available
Hi, but root checker says that I don't have root same with set cpu. Also, can i update it ota, to the new 2.3.4 when it comes out officially please? Also, I rooted my old htc desire, and then I wanted to root my galaxy s2 when ever here was a stableish nightly for ice cream sandwich, but will the fact it hasn't got an official kernel obscure me from flashing using odin to flash roms, other kenels and installing custom recovery, or because it says it isn't rooted, will it obscure be from rooting. Also are there any risks please? I am new to galaxy s2, I am used to the simplify of rooting the desire. thanks, also how do you know it's rooted?
Thanks very much for your help

Also, could you please be able to tell be, where in the procedure of rooting is my phone to be able to root, flash if someone has started the work for me please? I am just scared that if I start to mess around with trying to root it, and if someone has started the rooting the process, I might brick it. I don't know if I have explained this very well.
I should have done this before, but when it is so long I didn't think it would work, but I typed in the kernel in the search box and it came up with this, I think it may be stock and completely normal after all: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14593753
I got mine from Orange and the kernel was KE2. I think that KE7 is an official firmware, but the "root" in the name suggests it's already been rooted. Have a look in your apps for CWM or Superuser. If they're there then it's probably Chainfire's root that has been applied. If not then maybe they just flashed a stock kernel before sending it to you.
Either way, following the instructions in Chainfire's root thread will not brick your device (as long as you do follow the instructions )
It's actually quite hard to brick it. You really need to start pulling cables or stopping odin when you're flashing to do that.

Or if you start flashing Samsung Galaxy S 1 files onto your Samsung Galaxy S 2 like some people...
my brand new phone from vodafone australia was kernel dukf4 with [email protected] in the title, but it was most certainly not a rooted device.
I am now on ke7, rooted, no dramas. dont have cwm or rom, phone does not seem to need it for my lifestyle.

Bell Galaxy S 2.. want to go back to stock! :(

hey guys,
i just bought a samsung galaxy s2, rooted it with odin/superoneclick... works fine but i need to go back to a regular, vanilla galaxy s
i used super one click to unroot the phone, but i still get that yellow warning triangle every time i start up my phone. so i think it has something to do with that odin thing or whatever... again, super illiterate... i just really need to go back to a normal, no root, nothing regular old galaxy s 2! i'd really appreciate it guys. thanks so much!
There is (currently) no way to return to stock Bell i9100m. The firmware just hasn't been released. For future reference, do a little more reading before you flash anything as this has been mentioned in almost any thread flashing a Bell Galaxy S2 is mentioned.
Why do you want to go back anyway? Are you having some sort of problem? Is it for warranty service? If it's just the yellow triangle that's bothering you there are ways to get rid of that, use the search. Since you're still on the original firmware, at this time you will be able to get everything back to stock except the kernel.
Yep, as the poster above me mentioned theres no way to completely go back to "bell stock." Though if you just want unrooted samsung stock, flash any of the plethora of official samsung odin updates out there (kg3,kg6 etc) imo they are better anyway, no bloat and they perform better. Plus they will get rid of that pesky triangle thats bothering you so much.
Regards
could you provide a link please?

thats the thread for one of the MANY updates available for the SGS II, look around you'll find tons of roms. Research how to work odin before you flash though (if thats what you are going to do) odin can easily brick your phone if you don't know what you are doing.
while i have you here... i did the odin thing, i figured, **** it, might as well just use these custom kernel things.. i have no idea what they are or do. i just flashed ninphetamine or something... what exactly does it do? also, how come titanium back up etc say that it is not rooted. do i need to do the superoneclick?
Before you continue i would suggest you start reading before flashing/doing anything more. Its scary when people flash stuff without gaining the minimum knowledge to understand whats involved and the consequences. We could hold your hand and tell ya this and that but its been said many times before in this very forums.

[Q] [ROOT] Looking for a SIMPLE Root Method

All, I am a noob to this and could really use the help. Everything seems so convoluted.
I just returned my phone to AT&T because of some issues.I was able to root that one without an issue. However they now provided another phone with ICS on it. I don't want to install a ROM or change the kernel. Just want to use the AT&T software and have it come up the same way just rooted. I saw the GalaxyS2Root.com site but it changes the kernel to Siyah an load up screen picture is different.
I want to have the ability to load titanium back up and freeze the tethering program so I can tether my tablet.
Once again I just want a simple rooting program with minimal but detailed steps. I appreciate any assistance that you pros can give me.
Forever in your debt!!
Thanks

Dont go to galaxys2root and read the damn stickies. Cmon man!
I wish I could update the how to root guide in the stickies, but I'm not the original poster and the original poster has been gone from the forums since before Christmas. For what you want, use Odin to flash stock ICS plus root, which you can find in the development section, probably on the 2nd page.
