Data still on? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I unlocked my vibrant and use it on AT&T Data plan for non-smartphones.
I only start using the data plan 2 months ago and the first month data usage is "37128.54 MB of Unlimited". So I start to cut down a little bit and this month data usage is "12974.35 MB of Unlimited"
To my understanding 1000 MB = 1 GB?
so 37,000 MB = 37 GB and 12,900 = 12 GB?
I was really surprise when I saw the data usage because I know I did not use that much. Most of the usage is on my laptop since I use Mobile Ap but only for webs surfing, no downloads above 100 MB or any major downloads at all.
Only when I'm using the internet that "Use Data Network" is activated. So it's possible even with "Data Network Usage Off" on the phone but somehow it still stay on?
Using Bionix 1.3.1
Edit:
and I think AT&T capped my data plan speed because I'm at home using it right now and only getting EDGE, where-as I always get 3G.

Overused data in a day

Hi,
I'm still kinda new to android and settling in with it, but just today I went over 100% of my data plan. I found the message a bit odd as I had a message not too long ago (about 6 hrs ago) saying I was at 65%. I didn't use the data much in the 6 hr time period, I only used the facebook app a few times and I think thats all that I used that would normally use the data plan. or could it be the widgets? I only had beautiful weather widget and super clock on as well as the facebook and youtube widgets. would having performance mode on be the reason as to why I jumped from 65% to 100%?
What data plan do you have?

I had something similar happen with my wife's Atrix. Both mine and hers have the 2gb plan. We use wifi at home and work so we don't push all that much data through at&t.
We went out for dinner last week, away from wifi for about an hour. Not long after we got home, a notification arrived saying her phone had hit 2.7gb!! I had looked at util a few days prior an both were at 20-30mb. The util report on their website said all 2.7gb had been used that day, starting at the time we went out. I used my phone as much as she did, and mine showed a more reasonable 4mb for the day.
To hit that, her phone would have had to be downloading at a sustained 6mbps the whole time we were off wifi. Best speed I have seen through at&t in my area is 2.5mbps.
Customer service opened an investigation, but it will take til the 21st. In the meantime, the overage still shows on my account.

I have the 200 mb data plan (lame right? ) but last I checked on my data usage was the previous night, and I only used up less than 100 mb, and this weekend only I medium usage of navigation for android and did some internet surfing and used youtube outside of the house and without wifi. But today I had barely touched my phone except maybe 2-4 times and at 8 am I found that I used up nearly 30k kb and 77k kb at 10 am
It would be interesting if you could use wifi and put it through a proxy on your home network to see. If it's something in the radio it may not show
Since you're on Wifi at home have you checked your home data usage?
do you guys have any app to monitor your data usage? 3G watchdog can tell you exactly how much data each app is using, maybe something is syncing in the background...but 2gb should be plenty if you are not downloading or streaming videos.
Didn't have a data monitor running before but you bet I have both phones monitored now!
It has to be a monitoring error. All she was doing at the time was web browsing...no video, app installing, etc.

[Q] 3G: Simple Mobile vs T-mobile

I'm currently using Simple Mobile with $ 40 3G plan and my maximum 3G speed is 100 kbs. I know Simple Mobile is dependent on T-mobile's 3G tower but it seems Simple Mobile is slow for me.
I plan to switch to $ 50 data plan of T-mobile.
T-mobile users, what are the current maximum and minimum 3G speed of T-mobile ?
Depending on where you are, it should be a hell of a lot more than 100 kbps. T-Mo's HSPA+ areas theoretically can go up to 42 Mbps. My last few speedtests on the Vibrant (KB5 modem) in Mbps:
5.48 down 1.33 up
5.42 down 1.61 up
6.18 down, .41 up
3.98 down, .66 up
5.09 down, .38 up
3.90 down, 1.30 up

T-Mobile averages around 1-3 MBPS for me, and Simple Mobile always averages around 100 KBPS for me as well.

what's the advantage and disadvantage in using KB5 modem?
does KB5 modem increase 3G speeds in my simple mobile?
I too have let my contract expire with T-Mobile and went on with Simple Mobile, However I haven't seen any real difference between the two, meaning that T-Mobile was always slow for me and no matter what modems or configurations I tried, I never got the speed that others here are saying we should be getting.
Simple Mobile is using the same bandwidth as T-Mobile, because it is T-Mobile, so unless there was throttling or bandwidth restrictions that T-Mobile is implementing, based on the royalties or amount they pay T-mobile!!
Technically It should be the same as what the T-Mobile customers are getting, and In my case, I'm still getting the same ole slow assed data, that I had before when I was paying alot more to T-Mobile, I've been looking for a Holly Grail of tweaks, that might get my phone into the data performance I know Its capable of, but as of this moment, and after all this time, its still no better than Dial up, the only difference is I'm paying alot less than I was with TM.
Would love to find tweaks or configurations for my T959, that opens it up to some serious speed. And No I never DL anything enough month to month wise, to have them impose a CAP. But I'm so used to lag and poor performance, and the fact, that I wont ever go back to a CDMA provider again, So I'm stuck, unless I switch providers, like ATT which is serious $$, otherwise It would mean, putting my Vibrant in mothballs, And I love this phone, It takes the burden of running a laptop I used to need, to do the very same things I now accomplish with this phone, and simplifying my life, but with slow speed= Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!
Im also really interested to know!
Ok first thing first.
Both Tmobile and Simple Mobile does not provide unlimited 3g,
Tmobile (prepaid service that i use for 50 a month, a plan of relevance to the OP), provides 200mb of 3g service,
in this case, i would get 3mb speed, yet after the 200mb, they limit your service to 100 kbp range,
I have never used simple moblie before but i believe they use the same tower and provide more data, 2gig, and also cheaper,
so can someone tell me what varied data speed one would get for simple?
within 2 gig and after the capped data speed, thanx

I personally have been with simple for about a yr on both 4g and 3g speeds capped and uncapped
usually after you tether usb or wifi they will throttle you like almost that week and wont even know unless u call to be like wth
4g speeds are about the same as t-mobile
3g speeds are about 0.12Mbps even after changing from JK6 testing with different build props KA7 with different build props and even KB5 with different build props
For the most part i have been on these roms

I just gotten a SIM for simple mobile, Know I am wondering being that i am on ICS Passion am i going to be needing to unlock my phone? I put the SIM in and it did not ask me to enter a password or anything. Thanks for any help
No need to unlock because its under T-Mobile go to your simple mobile apn change proxy to
216.155.165.50 for data and save
Open T-Mobile apn and match every field like all the fields in your simple mobile apn except these changes
Simple MMS - apn
simple - name
216.155.165.050 - proxy
8080 - port
These settings are to send and receive pictures mms

To those simple mobile users with $ 40 monthly plan:
Will your 3G speed (128 kbs) will be lowered after you reach 2 GB ?
I have had both T-Mobile and Simple Mobile. I have a MyTouch 3GS and Vibrant. When on T-Mobile I usually was able to get ~1500 kbs however was paying $100/month for unlimited everything with a 5GB data throttle. After switching to Simple Mobile I am capped at ~120 kbs on either phone. My 3GS is running the latest CM7 nightly and my Vibrant is running ICS Passion 10.6. I have read on other forums that some users have complained to Simple Mobile and the support tech "reset" their internet and after, they received the download speeds closer to T-Mobile. I have contacted support twice and have yet to get that lucky. I mostly use WiFi therefore am happy with the $60/month saving.
3g?
I just moved to Simple mobile $40 plan. Their 3g speed is lower than t-mobile's 2g speed. On t-mobile 2g i had 130kbps and now on 3g I have 117kbps. Why they call it 3g speed plan.
Check out straight talk for 45 a month.. Just don't think it's unlimited data.

if simple mobile gave at LEAST 1mbps d/l speeds, I'd switch to them.. I had them before and their data speeds are nearly unusable.. I heard their 4G plan gives great speed, but I can't afford that..
Have you try the $30 pre paid, Tmobile plan, give you 100 minutes, unlimited text, 5gb high speed (4g) data, then throttle down until renewal date,

So guys, here is my story so far.
I have been on Tmobile contract for a while and decided to switch to a Prepay plan. The "unlimited" plans offered by t mobile are overpriced(+highly throttled) so I looked else where.
I am currently using simple mobile, which started with the 40$ plan. Soon after I noticed that the 40$ unlimited plan was highly throttled to about 140kbs and had to switch to the 60$.
With the bill almost doubling and simple mobiles piece of crap* service, I did some research and found out that straight talk was coming out with a 45$ truly unlimited plan with no throttling for at&t and tmobile. Now I havn't used it yet but ordered the tmobile sim card. I have heard great things about the at&t $45 plan and will switch after this month is over.

Will you please give a review about Straight-Talk next month? Is that $45 tax-included?
Thank you.

AT& T data count off?

In the last few months I've noticed my data usage on my phone has been astronomical. I consistently used 2gb for a year, but once att started cracking down on tetherers I installed traffic monitor just to see what data I am using. I do not tether and only stream music an hour or so a day and then facebook or twitter. I do not have any syncing on ever. *3282# just told me I have used 5gb but according to traffic monitor app I have used 2.5gb, has anyone else noticed any discrepancies between what att says and a 3rd party app?
I am not worried about my data since I am unlimited and don't tether just found it odd.
atrix of doom
I have run into quite a few issues with random data usage bursts and have actually had to contact AT&T about it, but to no avail. They say that, because of the fact that it's all third party apps, they have no idea how or what is using the data. I have moved to ICS via the CM9 alpha's and I have noticed a massive reduction in background data usage due to the built-in data monitor and some of the controls it's given me.
For reference, I am on a 200mb AT&T plan and normally can keep it under 150 without too many issues.
I've noticed in the last 3 months that for some reason my data usage has been getting close to the 2 GB limit. It actually went over one of those months. I've started using 3G Watchdog to monitor what's been using all my data and I've started just keeping wifi on while I'm at home. Google Music and the stock music app seem to be using a lot of data. I'm at around 500 MB so far this month and my next billing cycle starts on the 2nd of next month. It'd be way higher than that if I wasn't using wifi. On wifi alone it says I've transferred close to 600 MBs.

[Q] WiFi Tethering - Used over 1GB but...

I have a couple questions really.
Currently on the JellyBeer ROM 3.34
Using the built in WiFi Tether (Portable WiFi Hotspot) - I have accumulated over 1gig in the last few days of data usage. But My AT&T Usage only stats 200MB were used, Current (5 hours ago and I havent tethered today until now)
Does ATT not collect the data correctly and is my tethering data usage hidden and not being tracked on ATTs side?
- Does it take quite a few days for ATT to update correctly Android Phones?
(Currently on a plan with my girlfriend (iPhone 4S) and her phone doesnt have a Current as of: date. (Seems always up to date?)
The reason I'm asking this is her data under her phone number is saying she has used over 2GB of data in 9 days - and she "says" shes only watched a few music videos lately and no netflix streaming etc. Mostly Pinterest and Facebook.
So to conclude, I didn't know if AT&T is reading incorrectly and throwing the data im using on the same phone number forcing us to pay more data (overage) while my phone never comes close to going over 1GB (except the first month i had it) in the 6 months we've had the plan.
Thank you in advance for your help. I greatly appreciate it!
It usually takes a few days for usage (voice and Data) to show up. add a few more days if your billing cycle ends during that time.
Agreed ...
Actual usage is delayed ..g

Going on a trip, will 1GB data be enough?

I'll be in Japan in about a week (will be there for 22 days) and want to get a data sim so that I can use Google maps primarily, and some browsing as well. My options are 1 gb @ 7.2 Mbps or unlimited data @ 300 kbps. I'm leaning toward the latter to be on the safe side but wondering if that's just my insecurity talking.
What do you guys think? I don't use mobile data at all (just wifi when needed), so have no idea what to expect.

It depends on the signal on wherever you are going to.
Personally I would go to unlimited data if you are going to use google maps and some light browsing (I bet facebook ang google?)
But if you are heavy user who wants to watch video and download something, I'll go for 7.2Mbps but you need to use it well because it is limited for 1GB. You can look here for more info click here
