I was going to install the Thunderg custom recovery, but I might be getting a new SD card soon. Will I be able to maintain my root and recovery, and ROM if I install one, on the new card?
Yes. Your root and recovery will be preserved. if you are using a custom rom, create a nandroid backup now and when you switch sd cards, restore the backup to the sd card. If you are using partitions on your present sd card, you will have to reparttion the new sd card in a similar manner before doing nandroid restore.
I would use a different card for zapping custom rom so you keep the original as backup.

Could someone please confirm the process to me for changing an SD card when you current one already has an ext app2sd partition?
This is my guess but would like confirmation before I go at it.
Go to recovery console
Nandroid + ext backup
Copy nandroid backup to PC
Partition new SD
Copy nandroid to new SD
Nandroid restore from console
Thanks
Never mind, found the answer in the CDMA forums

By default the Clockwork Mod backup is saved to the internal SD card of the phone.
If I move it to my external SD card will I still be able to restore it or does it need to remain in the Clockwork Mod folder on the internal SD card???
Thanks in advance for any help.
You can check it for yourself by pressing backup and then restore in the recovery. If the file is found, you can restore, if not you can't.
I think it won't work. I was thinking of that you could put it on your external_sd and putting it back to the internal sd when you need to recover. But you can't access usb mode in recovery (yet) right?
So when you can't access the OS to place the backup back onto your internal sd, you can't recover. There goes my idea..
Thanks guys, I tried moving it to my SD card but it doesn't find it when I try to restore a back up so it has to stay on the internal storage.
Howdy,
I searched but couldn't find the answer. I have a 32 gb sd card which I inserted, formatted and mounted into my phone. I can copy and paste files from the phone storage and files to it, and vice versa, but when I backup and restore using clockwork mod, it never gives me a choice to backup to external sd card, or to restore from external sd card.
I've tried everything, but can't get clockwork mod to recognize the external sd card. Any suggestions?
Also, if I try to install a zip file from SD card, Clockwork mod does see the card and the files on it, but it just won't list it as a choice to restore from or to backup to.
AFter a bit thinking about it, I guess my question is whether I can backup and restore directly to and from external sd card, or whether I backup and restore to internal card, and then just copy the file to and from my sd card using file manager or explorer?
backup and restore should by default go to external sd. Which version of cwm do you have?

Yep, thats how it is on mine too
I've got 5.5.0.4..
Just wondering where a nandroid backup should be stored and if it matters where it is stored? I tried saving my stock rooted backup to my ext sd card awhile back, and now when I try to restore from backup in twrp there is no information found. I then tried to factory restore from twrp and reset my phone as is. It constantly bootloops until i pull the battery out.

What do you mean no information is found? I believe Twrp checks the internal sd by default and wont show your backup in your external sd until you change to look for it in your micro sd card. When you boot into recovery and and then hit restore at the top does the storage bar say Internal storage? If so tap it and change it to micro sd card then your backups should be displayed.

You need to make sure that your Recovery is compatible (i.e., can read) the format of your external card. You might have a 64gb external card formatted in exFAT which TWRP can't read (I don't use TWRP so I don't know if that's the case).
If the issue is compatibility between your card format and your recovery, I would recommend copying the backup off your card onto a PC, reformatting your sd card to FAT32, move the backup back to the card, and try again.
PS - in re: your ? on where to save backup: Internal storage is always 'safest' from a recovery perspective (i.e., your device will always find it); but these days, nandroid backups could be 5GB or more, consuming a huge chunk of space, especially if you only have 16gb to start with. So I think most people end up using their external card.
Hello again everyone, I have a 4gig sd card that I use with my s2 i9100, but for some reason Philz touch CWM recovery doesn't detect it. Now this happened before and I just formatted it via the storage settings on the phone, I then successfully did a nandroid backup to it. A few days later I planned on installing cm, so in preparation for that i decided to test out that backup just in case. But now the Sd card doesn't show up when I press restore and I cant mount it
.
Things Iv tried:
formatting it via storage settings (what worked last time)
formatting it using windows
doing the above again but this time dragging the copy of the sd card I made prior to the first attempt at formatting onto it
Edit: now the backup on my internal sd has gone missing, really confused about this one)
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am not comfortable flashing without having a backup on the external sd
