Factory reset - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted by phone and flashed Adrynalyn's basic debloated ROM, with his kernel. I updated to the V2 Kernel after it was released and this caused a problem. I can't get SU access. Superuser FCs and Rom Manager FCs when I try to restore to previous backups. And I can't install from SD card in bootloader, as there is not that option. I saw this happen to another person, but my question is. Can I just do a factory reset and go back to Stock S-ON and then re-root. I have a filling I need to push an .img to the SD card or something. Any help would be great. I'm new at this, but trying to learn. Basically I just want to return to Stock, but I'm not sure how to since I can't flash or install.

Factory Reset won't help you, it only clears user data and the cache. You should try flashing the SU Fix, let me see if I can find the link for you before you go back to stock and start over.

Thanks Magentic. I saw this fix yesterday and I tried to flash it. But when I go into Rom Manager and select Reboot into Recover, I get the error message "Sorry!, The application Superuser (process com.noshufou.android.su) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" it does this over and over. Is there another way to flash the SU fix with out Superuser being involved?

Power off the device. Press and hold the volume down then hold the power until the hboot screen comes on. Then select 'recovery' then proceed. Then choose install .zip from sdcard. The browse to the file and press power, then confirm your selection through the warning screen.
**make sure you dont dont have a pg05img.zip on your sdcard before doing this or it will auto try to flash it.

Hot damn! Thanks magnetic. I tried that same thing yesterday, I must have missed a step or something and couldn't quite get it to work. Things seem to working fine now. RM has SU permissions now and I can use it.

Custom recovery, stuck on a step.

Okay, im trying to flash custom recovery on my Optimus one [Stock 2.2] Rooted with Z4root [permanent].
First step is to donload 3 files
Kernel and the 2 files from this thread.
http://androidforums.com/getitnowma...ry-optimus-one-p500-thunderg.html#post1896517
I've unzipped flash_image.zip and recovery-RA-GNM-thunderg-1.1.0.img.zip at the root of my SDcard [empty one, 2GB] And put there the kernel.zip [as it was!]
I opened a terminal on my Optimus one and writed down the commands from the topic i've found above.
Now im stuck at
Code:
mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.bak
after typing this command i get a message over and over again that says "cannot read from location" or ""no such file or directory"" or something like that.
Anyone can guide me step by step ? I dont get it how the whole procedure must be done :/
That step is not required,it has something to do with "sticking" the recovery so it won't revert to the original. You can safely continue on to the next step
So i just ignore it, right?
Is there a risk on bricking my phone on flashing as far as i know.
Except my mistake, on what else does it depend that?
I did all theese steps and my phone restarted on Stock Rom settings with everything wiped out :S
[i have a backup of apps with titanium backup and vcf contacts etc etc..]
... but... WTF! :S
any help?
Please tell us in more detail what steps you have done.
Also, if you only want to install custom recovery, what do you need a "kernel.zip" for?
Which kernel is it, where did you get it from?

Ι did exactly the steps from this topic
http://androidforums.com/getitnowma...ry-optimus-one-p500-thunderg.html#post1896517
i ignoring as i said on my first post the message "no such file or directory"
after typing a command as NikolaMK told me to just ignore that.
After typing EXACTLY theese commands, phone restarted as i expected but with fresh stock rom!
[the kernel is the one with the cpu on touch fix.]
It restarted, but were you able to enter the custom recovery? When the phone is off, press vol down + home + power until you see the LG Splash screen.
Copy the flashimage.zip and extracted flashimage both to sd and do the steps again.
Also do the same with thunder zip.

It restarted but i didnt keep them off as far as i remember or didnt hold them for so long as it needed.
So in conclusion, if i dont keep them pressed, i lose chance on going onto custom recovery? Or not?
by the way, for safety i had zips extracted [except the one having the kernel i wanted to flash afterwards.]
Need as simple instructions as you can guys, im very conservative this time because i just have 1 week my phone right after repaired from last bricking.
I find it strange that your phone had the settings wiped after flashing the custom recovery.
I flashed it myself last Saturday, and all went well. Here's what I did:
Root phone using z4root
Install Terminal Emulator
Copy flash_image and recovery-RA-GNM-thunderg-1.1.0.img to SD
Perform the steps in the androidforums thread.
Now, I also expected the phone to boot into the recovery when issuing the command "reboot recovery", but it didn't. It booted normally, but there was no wipe, all my settings were still there. On we go:
Turn off phone
Press Vol-Down, Home and Power at the same time and don't let go until the recovery has booted. If you've done that and only thing happening was the settings wipe, something has gone wrong while flashing the custom recovery, and you're still on stock recovery.
Maybe you should MD5 check the recovery.zip you downloaded and try flashing it again.
Try placing flashimage.zip, extracted folder of flashimage.zip, and also contents from extracted folder, all on to the sd along with thunderg zip and start typing the commands on terminal emulator.
Also make sure u have rooted the phone first.
This should do the trick.
There is a video on YouTube showing the steps.I've never seen the whole video before, but I think it will be of much help Try it!
1) Phone is z4root-rooted.
2) i have all needed combination of files on my SD Card meaning: Folder contents of zip, root of card zips, unzipped on root, etc etc... so the commands can "See" the files no matter what.
3) it rebooted without custom recovery installed.
If i press the button combo without having installed custom recovery, what do i get?
I'd like to see the video AsherChua mentioned above.
I had a similar problem as you, I had to use the custom recovery from here
NOTE: THIS IS WHAT I USED, IT MAY OR MAY NOT WORK FOR YOUR PHONE

I believe you're supposed to go to the recovery for default android.. I went to it once possibly by accident and never figured out how to 'enter' while I was in it. up/down is still the volume key but I didn't know how to use confirmation.
Let's suppose im doing the same steps again as on my 1st post
BUT ....
after phone freezes and right as soon as it gets black screen, i push the button combo, it will work, right?
Was my fault for not pushing theese keys after the reboot message of terminal?
Is it obligated to do this?
I think what you get when you press the 3-button combo without having custom recovery installed, is a memory wipe/factory reset/whatever you wanna call it.
My guess, that's what happened to you.
If you have sucessfully installed custom recovery you can enter it WHENEVER YOU WANT! Just turn the phone off, when it's off press the 3 buttons and keep them pressed. Works for me. If it doesnt for you, my only explanation would be that for some reason you didnt succeed in flashing the custom recovery and are still on stock one.
When you entered the line "flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-GNM-thunderg-1.1.0.img", did it take a while before the cursor reappeard so you could enter the next line?
i dont remember if it took a while for the cursor or it was instant.
If i press the key combo vol_down + home + power while turned off without custom recovery, nothing happens, right?
I dont want to risk for 3rd time of a wipe :/
It's boring to install again tbackup and restoring everything from scratch! :/
If you press it without Custom Recovery it will wipe again !

[Q] stuck in boot animation

folks,
I was running sky-raider zeus rom on my HTC Thunderbolt. I went into Rom Manager and decided i wanted to try out the Cynagenmod rom. I down loaded it. Chose to do a full wipe and download google apps. Since then it rebooted after and has been stuck in the Boot animation.
I tried to go into recovery and it asks me if i want to proceed with update. I choose yes. Unzips files and reboots into the boot animation and remains stuck.
Please Help.
Describe in as much details how you flashed this Rom, what did you name the file if you changed it at all? Did you flash in Rom manager or recovery? Did you clear data/cache/davlik? What version of recovery are you using? How did you flash in recovery, did you go to select zip file from SD card?
If I helped you in any way please use the thank you button
Delete double post
I used Rom Manager and I had the latest version. I'm not sure what the # was. I chose to wipe all options and download google apps. After that I did not touch the phone and it went into reboot and has been stuck in the boot animation since.
Thanks for your help in advance
So you flashed the Rom from CWM app?
If I helped you in any way please use the thank you button
Ok this is what you do never ever flash a Rom from Rom manager, you are going to want to select reboot to recovery and do it from there. Here are steps to save your night.
1. take battery out and put back in and hold down on volume and hold power button at same time. this will boot into Hboot.
2. Select recovery (god I hope you don't have a radio sitting there) or that will load instead of recovery. If this is the case you will want to remove your SD card and use a computer to remove the radio from ur card.
3. Once you are in recovery select clear data/cache and then under advanced clear davlik. And select install file from SD card and it should say select file and just pick last Rom you loaded I always keep a few on mine just in case.
4. This will install the Rom the correct way, after it is done reboot and all should be well.
If I helped you in any way please use the thank you button
Grnlantern79,
Thank you so much for your help. I do have something sitting there. I"m not sure if it is a radio though i think it is. It reads
Parsing...[SD ZIP]
[1] MDM9K
[2] Radio_V2
Do you want to update?
What should i do?
Yes it is a radio and No don't update, and hopfully it will allow you get to recovery if not get on computer and remove the pg05img file off SD card.
If I helped you in any way please use the thank you button
thanks for your help.
When i get home from work i will try to get to my own computer to get the file out. Thanks
nevermind found it

Yea once you flash a radio either move it off the root of SD card or rename it so you can use it at a later time in case a future radio does not work as well. It's always good practice to keep the root of SD card clear of files named pg05img.zip or update.zip

[Q] HELP!!! flashed CWM to my 2.3.5 Fascinate, now i cant get out of recovery

used oden to flash CWM. now i cant boot into android, it just keeps kicking me into CWM recovery.
anyone see this? any suggestions? would a wipe fix it?
did you flash a rom if so which one?
no ROMs, simply just tried flashing CWM via Odin
may i ask why 2.3.5?
what were you trying to do?
i am still able to get into Download mode to flash files via Odin, so i dont think all is lost. but, still just stuck in recovery. when i try to reboot it just takes me right back into recovery. i may have flashed an incorrect version of CWM which could be the cause of this problem. if that was the case, any ideas as to how i can get back into a proper boot?

I was trying to flash CWM so i could flash a custom ROM. Had this phone forever and was just looking to try out some ROMs out there.
As long as you odin cwm none of your os is really touched.
try the cwm 4 fixed for cm7. http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...2&d=1311907538
Now when you reboot your device the stock kernel will over right the cwm.
also make sure you put the odin file in the PDA section.
So basically flash the new cwm and try booting into normal that should get you back where you started from. 100% stock.
that link didnt work. tried searching for the thread without any luck
for some reason it truncated the link with a '...' and it thinks that is part of the hyperlink
dl.dropbox.com/u/14764513/cwm4_fixed_for_cm7-ODIN.tar <- cwm 4 fixed for cm7
thanks.. so i flashed this via odin. same problem. i start the phone. the samsung logo comes up. it disappears for a second. then it comes back up and kicks me into recovery.
weird right? any suggestions
ok then what is your endgame?
Now before you said you flashed just the CWM, may i ask why...if you did not intend to flash a rom? were you going to flash a Kernel or obtain root?
Perhaps you should try this
Download this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278838
It is a custom kernel.
Now Flash CWM with odin
Put battery back in [dont touch power button yet]
Hold down BOTH volume and Power all at once * Dont let go until you see Samsung Logo.
[should still be plugged into pc via usb]
You will boot into CWM
using the volume up and down-Scroll down to Mounts and storage [select it by hitting the power button]
Then scroll to Mout USB storage
~now you should be able to see your SDCard as storage on your PC, put the Kernel some where on your SD Card~
[back on your phone Then Select Unmount
Scroll to ****Go bacK***** [select]
Scroll to install zip from sd card [select]
Select choose zip from sdcard
Navigate to where you have the zip
Select it
Scroll down to Yes-Flash........
Let the phone do its thing!
Good luck!
Your bootlooped...if you can get into cwm wipe all three and flash a rom thats compatible with the version of cwm you have installed. Or odin back to stock and start over...

[Q] I just rooted my phone. Now what do I do?

I successfully performed Unknownforce's hboot downgrade and rooted using Revolutionary. I want to start trying out ROMs but a friend told me I should back some stuff up first.
My first problem is I wanted to take a screenshot of my apps menu just in case I lost them but I wasn't able to do it like I used to with the POWER + HOME buttons.
My second problem is Titanium Backup. Apparently I have to run this in root, but I thought my phone was rooted already? Do I have to run it in a rooted ROM? If so, what's the best way to backup my current ROM and configuration?
I'm so lost. Can someone post a quick and dirty guide to doing these things? It might be easier if I understand the concept and flow of what I should be doing.
Thanks.

If you are rooted, you should have superuser, check your app drawer. Get titanium backup from the market and backup the apps you want or you can just do a full system backup with TWRP (team win recovery). There are many good roms out there. I'm partial to Meanrom. Head over to the EVO 3d developer thread and click on the roll up sticky thread for all the links that can guide you through this.

Super user is an app. It gives permission for other apps to have root privileges, such as titanium backup.
If you do not have superuser in your app drawer then most likely your not rooted. Flash this zip from recovery and you'll be rooted.http://db.tt/4MQNcpdb. Revolutionary does not give you root, it just gives you s-off. I am going to assume that you flashed a recovery during the revolutionary process so I will not go into that.
I am not responsible for anything you do to your phone. DISCLAIMER: If you choose to follow these direction and use the zip from above I am not at all responsible for anything that may happen to your phone or sdcard.
1. Go into menu/setting/power and make sure fastboot is unchecked. Fastboot will prevent your phone from booting into bootloader unless you do a battery pull.
2. Power phone off.
3. Boot into bootloader. Do this by holding volume down and power button until phone boots into bootloader. Make sure you hold volume down button first.
4. Once booted into bootloader select bootloader then select recovery. This will reboot phone into recovery. (Navigate bootloader and recovery by using volume buttons and make selection using power button)
5. Once in recovery select "install zip from sdcard"
6. The superuser zip will be in your download folder if you downloaded it directly from phone, select that folder then select the super user zip from the link I provided.
7. Select "yes install zip from sdcard"
8. Once the zip is flashed select "go back" then select "reboot phone".
9. Your phone will boot up like normal. Check in your app drawer for the super user app, if its there your golded. One more note, you can make a backup of your entire setup from recovery. Just select backup/restore and select backup.
ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE FLASHING ANY ROMS OR MODS.
After you have made your backup I would suggest that you update your firmware first then look into flashing what ever rom you choose. Go to this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443592 and look under other firmware bits and you will see xHausx latest everything. That will give you all the firmware, newest prl, radio, and other updates. It will look like this
Firmware w/o hBoot, System, Boot and Recovery partitions. (Must be S-OFF)
http://dev-host.org/svsae25h2v0n/PG86IMG-2.17.651.5_Firmware_Only.zip
MD5:25442C4C8EDDD628391FA6E3CD9924B0
Once you download it check the md5 and verify that it matches up with the one given under the zip file. IF IT DOES NOT MATCH UP DO NOT FLASH IT, COULD BRICK YOUR PHONE. Redownload it and check it again. If it matches up place it on the root of your sdcard and rename it PG86IMG.zip. make sure it is typed exactly like you see it or the bootloader wont see it. Once that is done boot back into bootloader and you might have to select bootloader. It will find the PG86IMG and ask you if you want to update it. You will have to press volume up to select yes. Once your updated make sure you either rename that zip file or place it into a folder so that the bootloader can't see and prompt to update again. You wont be able to get into recovery from bootloader if it still sees a zip file with the name of PG86IMG.

Thanks for all your help. I successfully performed all the steps you mentioned but when I boot up and check the 'Software number' it still says I am on 1.13.651.7. Is that how it's supposed to be?
Also, can anyone help me with the screenshot function? It seems I've lost the ability to take screenshots all of a sudden.
Yes you are still on the old software because of the hboot rollback. That is why it shows an older software number and also why you have lost the screenshot function. You only updated the radio and firmware at this point. You should now be able to use titanium backup to backup all you apps. If you want to save the positing of the app on your home screens use the desktop backup feature also in titanium.
Once that's done your ready to flash a rom. I suggest cleanrom to start out. Go here to find it http://www.scottsroms.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=98 this will be flashed from recovery. Once your apps are backed up make sure you sync your contacts with your Google account because flashing a rom the right way WILL erase all user data. It will not effect firmware or radio though.
1. Reboot into recovery
2. Wipe data/factory reset
3. Wipe cache
4. Go into advanced menu and wipe dalvich cache.
5. Install zip from sdcard. Should also be in your download folder if you downloaded it directly from phone. Choose the cleanrom zip or what ever one you chose and your good to go.
I don't remember if clean rom has titanium backup included in the rom or not. If not once your Google account is set back up just download it again and restore all the apps that you backed up.

Boot into recovery and do a nand back up incase something go's wrong when that's done by now you should have titanium back up installed and back up any apps that you want to keep and then find a ROM that may like and flash it but for you flash the ROM read the post first to find out what's working and what's Knott working and base your desission off that and if you fell thats the right ROM for you try it out and before you flash any Rom's download a super wipe tool I highly recommend it and wipe every thing as normal factory reset wipe dalvic cache scroll down to advance click on it and scroll down to dalvic wipe battery star's wipe and then go back to your download folder and you will install the super wipe tool when thats done your ready to flash your new ROM go back to the download folder and flash the ROM don't install any them's until you've had a full boot and that way you will know what's working and what isn't working. Good luck

I have rooted my phone but...

Hello, I am new here and also new to using an android device. I followed instructions to root my phone and now I can access the command "su" in a local terminal. But when I go to download SuperUser it says my device is not rooted. Did I miss something? And if I did mess up and didn't install the right kernel, autoroot or whatever, how do I check my android's model number?

On the back either on the better cover when you peel it off or under the battery it should say something like G900T or G900V depending on your carrier and type of phone I'll help if I can just need to know which model you are actually you might be able to skip my instructions below and just go to install super su and that night work but if not just follow those instructions and you'll be golden if you got any questions pm me or just click the reply button and ask and I'll do my best to answer it
Download the rom you want and kernels that go with it depending on your phones settings such as oj4 OL1 it'll say under settings and about device those versions are the last 3 characters in the field (that confused me at first just a heads up) etc etc make sure theyre all the same also don't forget to download supersu (I can't remember where to find it just go on my topic and someone posted the link there
Put them onto your SD card
Download TWRP 2.8.whatever the newest one is on your computer
Download Odin and on the AP slot or PDA click it then find the TWRP file and click that then go under options on Odin and uncheck autoreboot
Turn your phone off and put it into download mode (press the volume down button and home button and power button at the same time) then the volume up button once the confirmation screen comes on
Then flash the TWRP and once it's done it'll Stat on that screen so you have to remove the battery then put it back in and boot into recovery mode (volume up home button and power button at same time)
Now go into the install button and navigate to your SD card and find the super su and click the install or flash button I can't remember which it is and slide the slider thing and hit reboot phone
When it asks to install super su before you reboot don't click install just reboot it since you've already installed it it'll work
Then go in and you'll have supersu and be rooted
Now boot back into recovery and install/flash the rom and kernel and ignore the supersu install thing again and you'll be good to go I also highly advise making a backup if you have the space for it
Ok I have done that, but now my phone is stuck on the T-Mobile logo...

Well I couldn't find that link but thanks for giving me it. I downloaded SuperSU from google play instead. But I started SuperSU and it wanted to rebuild the cache or something and it gave me the options to do it normally or with twrp so I chose twrp. It rebooted started twrp and started building it, then it started back up and was stuck on the T-Mobile screen. But I downloaded a new rom from sammobile.com and I couldn't get it to work then I renembered something about you have to use a secific Odin version, so I went from 3.10.7 to 3.09 and nothing changed, so then I cleared cache and nothing. So, I went to Odin3 3.07 and nothing so I went back up to 3.09 and it started to stop being soft bricked. And I just have to set everything back up, which will not take long, about 2 hours. So, I will download the SuperSU from that site and I will see if it works again.
Note to self: keep the stock rom, damn it's a huge file.

No problem I figured that's what had happened and I used Odin 3.10.6 I think it was and yeah if you do it with the TWRP one it ducks it up for some reason I think it's an old supersu version or some thing and it's not compatible but I'll also post a link to download the stock rooted rom for you to flash

Either or it really doesn't matter me personally I like deodex just because there's more customizability with it but both do the job also if you do the deodex one it'll take about 10-15minutes to come on after you flash/install it in twrp where as regular should just come on like a normal boot maybe 5 minutes
After about a month of making sure it works I have successfully rooted my phone! Thank you very much!
