[Q] why do you LIKE sense vs other UI software? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

as it relates to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1014003, i'm now asking the opposite. which features/apps/overall experiences do you like about sense?
i didn't wanna take the other thread too off topic and debate why one specific app sucks and start to argue over it. i'd like purely positive feedback about which aspects of sense you like directly vs any other UI you've used (blur, touchwiz, vanilla, etc)
i'm not doing any research for any particular company or anything like that, just my personal curiosity.

Well lets start off with where I came from. My first Android phone was the Droid 2. I don't know if anyone has seen but the Droid 2 has a rediculous Motoblur UI. The one thing I noticed right off the bat was how "Laggy" it was. The first chance I had I rooted it and installed the first ROM I could that stripped all the Motoblur and the phone ran much, much better. Not to mention that most of the blur crap was completely useless (Yes cause I need a widget that lets me post to facebook, wait theres an app for that? <.<).
Ok so you know my feelings on Motoblur so first chance I had I jumped ship to an HTC phone which was luckily the Thunderbolt. The second I booted the phone I saw all the sense stuff and I was like oh here we go again, but I decided I would try it out for a bit. And well, suprisingly, I loved it! The sense widgets are actually useful (Calender, Music, FM radio) and the phone runs extremely smooth with the sense. I actually took my time and waited for a good rooting method since other than the bloatware the phone was basically perfect.
Okay well I know that wasn't what you were asking but I have been dieing to get that off my chest ever since I bought this phone. So now to the things I like.
Notification bar looks pretty good.
Messaging and phone apps are pretty decent.
You can change themes (Somewhat) by just switching skins which is built into the phone.
Lock screen has plenty of use.
It runs smooth as butter, no real modifications needed.
Thats all I can think of for now but on the contrary there is no real reason I have for leaving Sense, I use Das BAMF which adds the features I want with sense integrated. I think its perfect.... For me.

I've always liked sense, even when I was on Windows Mobile.
It runs smooth, its well polished, has pretty decent support from HTC. I think the interface is one of the best, and can be customized to my taste pretty nicely.
I've used other launchers, SPB Shell, etc. But I always come back to Sense

1. Sense calendar app is much better than touchwiz. You can actually click a phone number in a conference call meeting request and have the phone dial.
2. The exchange integration is also quite a bit better. Meeting requests show full details and give you a heads up if you are already booked for a given time slot.
3. Flip for speaker phone and ringer silence is pretty awesome.
4. Scenes/skins are okay, i don't use them too much, but it's nice to be able to ditch all the work related widgets/apps on the weekends.
5. I personally like recent apps in the notification shade, but i know some people hate it.
6. Calendar/messaging/clock widgets are really nice, love the live weather.
7. auto increase of ringtone volume when the phone is in a pocket is pretty awesome.
8. lock screen message preview is cool as are the stock lock screen music controls
9. dark notification bar (hate the old school ASOP)

[Q] Sense-like ROM?

noob question...
Will someone develop a Sense-like ROM, once development gets underway for the Photon? I really liked Sense, but did not like the 3vo's sound/speaker quality. I would love a sense ROM on the Photon.
Is it possible to strip the sense interface from 3vo and stick it on the Photon? Will this only be possible if bootloader is cracked or would it be possible with root only?
Sorry if the question is redundant or too simplistic for this forum.
Thanks.

it can be done but why? it's like a beautiful woman with a snaggletooth she's perfect till she smiles and ruins everything...
I honestly don't understand why everyone raves about sense. Yeah, its pretty, but never really added any functionality for me. I had an evo, and had a Evo Shift and the first chance I had to dump sense, I did.
I loved touchwiz on my epic, because it was basically just stock, tweaked a little.
To me HTC Sense is bloated and unnecessary. When you can't do certain things in sense that you can in stock android, it seems pointless.
Also, I don't know why everyone hates on blur. I know the old blur sucked, but whatever Ninja or Ghost blur the photon is running I absolutely LOVE.
@randomrobbi - "When you can't do certain things in sense that you can in stock android, it seems pointless"...maybe I missed something...what can't you do with sense that you can with stock?
The thing I miss most about sense is the widgets, especially the email one. It would show unread push email from several accounts including an exchange account and gmail. I liked that it would show the unread count immediately like photon does for voicemail.
I also liked the unlock screen where you could drag the slider circle to one of 4 apps that you want to use immediately.
And, yes, it was pretty. Couldn't a sense ROM have the bloatware stripped from it so that wouldn't be an issue?

I guess I misspoke about that. It's just harder to carry out some actions in sense, as compared to stock android. Like hitting dialer, and being able to easily access your starred contacts. I just felt like Sense added alot of extra steps to simple actions. I guess i'm just biased, but the first android I owned was an HTC Hero, which I never rooted or put a rom on. I didnt keep it long and went back to my blackberry. I've just always been more a fan of AOSP Android.

kimmie...try out THIS lockscreen. Same as the Sense one Agile Lock Screen
Also...I miss the Sense 3.0 Notification bar. Effin amazing. Has tons of toggles, quick access to apps, etc. Was so convenient & slick.
I'm sure I'm also in the minority but I happen to really like Sense, both visually and from an ease of use standpoint when setting up new devices. That said, I often turn a lot of those things off, or flip back and forth between various launchers but I still miss it sometimes. DEFINITELY agree about the Notifications, those are just the way I'd like them to be.
I'd love to see an installable Sense but it seems pretty deeply entangled in the rest of the system, just like Blur, so I dont know how well it'd work as a standalone.

Im coming out of the closet too. I love the build and accessories of the Photon but im so damn used to Sense. Its like driving home from work, sure there are many ways but after awhile you find and get used to the fastest and easiest way home. Vogue, TP, TP2, Evo 4G and Evo 3D...currently Photon. Some days I forget how to get home.
Oh how about a touchwiz 4.0 like rom I really do miss my quick panel in the notification bar it was really handy :/
With the HTC Sense api recently available, i am sure that someone will start creating widgets and icons etc for other non-sense devices.
hmmm that didn't sound right, oh well, hope you guys know what I mean. lol

Ifeel the same, I love the Motorola Photon... better speaker, better signal strength, call quality is better also... It just seems to be a little stronger over all.... But I miss the Sense 3.0. Sense is fluid with no lag.
The Motorola Blur has a slight delay when switching back and forth between home screens. I used to miss the graphical HTC widgets, but i have beautiful widgets for that so i am not realy missing anything. I just miss the speed and fluidness of Sense technology.

The Delay can be removed with the super charger script, my buddy's Photon is now just about as smooth/quick as my Syngery Evo
The delay can be removed by adding launcher pro, turning off screen animations and putting all speed at 10... fastest phone out there then, faster and smoother than evo 3d.. i know because ive owned both lol
Edit: i know a lot of people prefer adw or GO but i dig LauncherPro.. also dont care about the updates as much because cool thing about blur is that you can use the widgets still once the overlay is installed, unlike sense.

What the hell are you doing back here? According to your thread in the 3d forums, this phone is a piece of ****. However your info about launcher pro and the settings is correct.
I don't understand the hate for the M.A.P. launcher I actually dig it

Try Launcher Pro as the launcher, register it for the senselike social widget, and get Weather & Toggle Widgets and tbe weather widget forecast addon for your flip clock. This makes for a NICE senselike alternative.

I think any phone with ClockworkMod Recovery can flash TW 4.0. It said that on the homepage awhile ago. Go to the Galaxy S i9000 forums in the Themes and Apps section and one of them is flashable I think and works on any device.

I used to be a sense guy too.. I mean.. compared to stock android... it blows it out of the water... After getting the Evo I got my wife a Samsung Moment... I upgraded it to 2.2 but I never saw stock android before... I thought it was still 1.5 or something because I couldn't believe stock android looked that bad...
Stock android is ugly as sin.. and the widgets are less than ****.
But then I found Launcher Pro and its "almost-like-sense" widgets for calendar and facebook and I've never looked back. I loved Evo Deck on my Evo and Evo Shift Deck on my wifes phone because it is CM7 with ADW Craplauncher removed and LP added... a much better choice I must say.
LP's widgets are the only thing close to Sense's widgets so until another launcher starts pushing good widgets... I'll never leave.
So to answer the OP... Launcher Pro is the only Sense-like option you have... combined with Fancy Widgets for the flip clock (its the only one that does auto-update of weather based on GPS.)

I already miss honeycomb..

I got my Transformer Prime earlier today (about 2:00pm to be exact) and I've been screwing with it all day. I love the way it feels and it made me very happy. The whole day I had also been postponing the update...
but I did it. I already miss the looks and feel that honeycomb offered. Yes, the ICS update may bring out the hardware a little more, but why did they "downgrade" some of the niceness of the GUI? The thing I liked about HC was that it felt different. It was a unique tablet OS that wasn't like anything else. Now that it has ICS, it feels like a bigger version of the ICS phone version. Long pressing home screens no longer brings up that convenient, pretty menu, but now just asks for the wallpaper location. The app drawer is no longer transparent and doesn't have that "fade" animation anymore, which I really liked. The home screens now have an unnecessary "dot counter" at the top and the default clock isn't the pretty blue one that I liked anymore. I feel like my first experience with the tablet is now history.
To top it off, the camera feels uglier and takes longer to snap photos. The flash is also messed up, because now when I take photos with the flash they are extremely bright and too white. Before, they would simply be brightened up a little bit.
I know some of this stuff can be fixed with app installs and stuff, but I really loved honeycomb and now I feel like the tablet isn't the same.
I agree whole-heartedly. I never expected to be saying it because I had been convinced by all the hype of how awesome ICS would be. Unfortunately, now that I've updated, I'm realizing that its no upgrade- lots of games/apps no longer work and the UI is only a shadow of its former self (see previous post). Hopefully someone will find a way to get these features to us, before we have to seek the next tablet.
SCOTT
I'm just hoping when the bootloader gets unlocked that someone makes an optimized honeycomb ROM. I know I'll be installing that for sure..
I think Asus rushed ICS on to the Prime. All the lock ups, freezes etc. Other than that I'm a fan of ICS. Honeycomb is an eyesore compared to it.
Well on top of that, all of the other stock apps seem to be downgraded as well. The calendar no longer has the nice coloring that it had before, the camera is now an ugly gray gradient color and is slow to take pictures, the lock screen no longer "ripples" and doesn't have the sleek animation that it had before, the homescreens now require more distance to swipe through (which is bad for me since I like swiping the corners a lot), the settings screen is all jumbled up, the clock is ugly, the gallery is now 2D and not as "nice" as the old one...need I go on?
ICS is such a downgrade for me. As soon as that bootloader gets unlocked I'm reverting to honeycomb right away.
I find the changes to UI in Android 4.0 as the best thing Android could have done. Native apps look sleek and modern, the sci-fi'ish/TRON coloring of UI itself is perfect for the culture it represents without being a bother for regular users.
I really, really love it.
But people are different, so it's interesting to hear some still prefer Honeycomb.
I love the style of ICS as well; the light blue / gray coloring is awesome. I'm just saying I really loved the black / blue honeycomb a whole lot more. It felt so much less cluttered and it felt "cooler" to me. Now I can't go back for at least a few more weeks
IcS OS the best thing to happen to Prime. Plus it was built for it anyways. People forgetting device was supposed to originally with ICS anyways. Yeah the long press feature on-screen of HC is missed but ill be OK..lol. too many people wanted ICS. ICS did fix alot of issues and speed things up nicely. If we would still be stuck on HC everyone would be crying about it. Plus ICS is the universal version. So phone version supposed to look similar. More n more benefits of ICS will show itself as more updates come. Probably with next update due anyday now.
I know what you mean and I agree with you. ICS definitely is a step forward and it was made to unify the platform and make everything better. My point is that I loved the way honeycomb felt and this is a little less nice in my opinion. Also to be honest I feel like it's slower now..but maybe I'm doing something wrong.
EDIT: Forgot to turn on "Force GPU Rendering" in development settings. It's super smooth now..like really smooth.
I'm glad I disabled my update. I was seeing all the problems people were having with updating to ICS. I think I'll wait until the bootloader is unlocked and we have a working CWM so I can do a nandroid backup before flashing any upgrades.
I'm so glad I've seen this, I thought I was the only one who preferred honeycomb on the prime.
Ics on my sensation = pure awesomeness

I like it better (ICS) but where did Riptide go?
All I know is that when I pick up my original Transformer and use it for a few minutes, I'm missing the Prime pretty immediately--and ICS is one of the reasons. I just don't like Honeycomb...

I bet the Asus engineers scrambling to figure out the ICS lockup issue and hundreds of Primes owners with $500 paperweights would disagree with this.
Is it possible some of those pretty things in Honeycomb were Asus additions and with them trying to rush ICS out they didn't add those things? I agree, that I thought Honeycomb felt much more refined. I don't dislike ICS though.

Yup, ditto.
Just experienced my first lockup/freeze on ICS in the car today. Was testing the IPS+ brightness boost and when I turned it on, the device became unresponsive and rebooted after a few seconds.
There had better be a firmware update quickly, or the unlocked bootloader at least.
EDIT: The camera also now has a flash issue. If you use the flash to take a picture up close to something, the flash will make the picture extremely bright instead of just illuminating the photo; honeycomb did not have this issue. Former macro shots now look like flashbangs.
The only thing that sucks in ICS versus HC, at least in my opinion, is the garbage Gallery app in ICS. In HC, the folders were alphabetically ordered, and you could toggle between viewing only photos or videos. In ICS, the folders a completely random mess that cannot be properly ordered, and the video/photos toggle is gone. This is more on Google than Asus, as the gallery is equally crappy in ICS on my Galaxy Nexus, but it's annoying nonetheless.

Exactly. I know ICS is a great step forward, but it destroyed most of what I liked about honeycomb in the first place.
EDIT: Second lockup just occurred a little while ago while I was looking for an app on the Market. Ugh..
EDIT 2: Another lockup, literally 10 minutes after I turned my device on in the morning..went to select the camera from the lockscreen and bam. THEN, while it was rebooting, it locked up DURING THE BOOT and went back to the splash screen. This is kinda messed up.
Just had two lockups in a row within a 20 minute period. One in the music player, the other in the market (that makes two or three lockups I've had in the market alone so far).
I know everyone is having this issue but jeez..it's happening so frequently.
EDIT: Another lockup by loading up Barcode Scanner for the first time. Yes, I'm kinda using this thread as a way to keep track of my lockups, but maybe it'll help somehow.

Sense 4 Or Pure Google?

So I've come to a delimma.
Sooner or later, there will be an official port for CM9 or AOKP for the Evo LTE.
I had an OG evo for 2 years, and never really liked sense. Even when Sense 3.0 came out, I liked the ring lockscreen and the fact that you could drag a new message to the ring to open it etc... But I always found the sense 3.0 ports to the OG Evo to be half baked, or slow/laggy.
I stuck true to Evo Deck, and when he started developing the ICS deck, I kept up with it, as well as AOKP.
After using my Evo LTE for a week, I've grown to like sense 4. I really like the lockscreen features, specifically the dragging message feature. I find that sense 4.0, true to it's theory of development, is much less obtrusive than sense 3.0, but deep down I still have a yearning for pure google, the true ICS flavor (or at least AOKP, same flavor, but with sprinkles.)
I know that the lockscreen shortcuts can be emulated with a quad or octo lockscreen, but what about the sliding message feature?
What are your guys' thoughts on the matter?
Who's going to stick with HTC's sense when CM9 or AOKP (or even Kush's ROM if he's making it own, haven't kept up with it recently) come or, and who's going to jump ship to a non-sense rom and why?
I'm excited to hear what everyone else thinks!
Have you looked at go locker? Or widget locker? Those two have some nice features that emulate the sense lockscreen and are nice when you run aosp and aokp.

Hmm, I don't generally like using third party lockscreens, in my experience they're pretty buggy and don't mesh well with the os, a lot of blinking out when you unlock lag, re-locks etc

I tried setting up Google Wallet today just for the hell of it and it just wouldn't work. I think it's because I have 2-step verification enabled on my account. Doesn't matter, I never really planned on using it anyway except maybe to spend the $10 they give you for signing up. There are about 4 different mobile payment methods that are all supported by different companies (almost none of which support Google Wallet) I have a feeling it's not going to survive very long anyway. Even the GNex on Verizon doesn't have it installed because Verizon supports a different payment method.
As for Sense, it was useful on earlier versions of Android to make things a little prettier and more user friendly. Matias Duarte and his team have done a great job to address that and now I just feel it gets in the way. Think of what you have to go through just to change the wallpaper. On stock ICS you long press on the screen and choose change wallpaper. On this you pull down the notification tray>settings>personalize>wallpaper. It's just not intuitive and simple like it should be.
Another thing that bothers me is the recent apps. It seems like they changed some stuff just for the sake of changing it and have a worse implementation of it.
I personally have always preferred Sense or Sense based ROMs. Could never get into the vanilla experience on a phone it just looks so "8 bit" to me. I'll definitely be keeping Sense 4, love the look and functionality.

There in lies the beauty of Android, everyone can have exactly what they like. Take for instance the roms for the OG EVO by MagnusRagnarok, I always felt they were way over the top but there are a lot of people who liked them. I personally always defaulted to either CM7 or Fresh roms. I do feel that ICS is quite beautiful in it's elegance though, much more so than earlier versions of Android. It's not handicapped like iOS but still very intuitive.

I will stick with sense as I have not had the issues others have had. (Multitask, lag, etc..) Sense seems to run fine for me, hell it's a phone..
Also I have rooted my phone and google wallet works just fine. It did take me many attempts to get my 10$ credit but it seems to wkr fine. the issue I have is I never take my phone with me into stores, etc... so I haven't tested it yet...
I am going to get some (already ordered) some NFC tags so I can play with that seems kewl..

Also I really love the camera on this phone and all the functions. It's pretty awesome!
I will hang on to sense for a while until CM9 is fully vetted...and seems stable then I will probably try it...
So far so good... my friends are jealous!
For anyone who hasn't tried it yet the sense 4 car dock is arguably the best car dock I've used.

Sense
Thanks for the good discussion! I'm still on the OG EVO, running SOS ROM. Swagstr has done wonders to make Sense 1.0 run as it should but what I'm hearing regarding sense 4.0 just bugs me. Multitasking is something I use a lot of and sense restarts have always plagued me. I love the scenes in sense, use one for home and one for work and generally like the polish it brings. Hate the laggy aspects as well.
I love the new EVO hardware and while I was tempted to go with the GNex, it's just too dated now. If it wasn't for the multitasking screw up, I'd be picking one up today. In the meantime, I'm reading reviews and seeing what the Devs have in store.
A couple of questions:
What are the opinions on multitasking? I switch from Touchdown to Enhanced Email, to Voice, Pulse, Handcent almost constantly during the day. This sounds like a hair pulling situation in Sense 4.
Sense restarts? I know it's a sure thing to restart if too many browser tabs are open, but I also get it if I switch from Pulse to browser or another app a few too many times. Are people seeing frequent restarts?
Thanks again!
I haven't used sense in over a year. I use widget locker for the lockscreen, nova launcher for the launcher, beautiful widgets for the time/weather on the home screen. Even use a different dialer - dialer one, which allows way more customization than the stock.
IMO, sense does nothing more than dumb down the phone. If you want a dumb phone, go iphone
The pic below with the clock at the top is my home screen. Clock at the bottom is the lock screen. Everything right where I need it.
I've always liked sense best because I didn't really like the look of stock android, but now ICS went better on the UI side. I still think I like sense 4 better though.
I actually liked Sense as well. Even though I rooted my OG EVO to get superuser stuff and wi-fi tether, I stuck with sense.
Sense 4 looked very nice BUT it was reloading constantly. Every time i exited an app.
There are several root-required tweeks I have seen that are supposed to help this, but I'm not sure how much you can do as much memory as Sense is taking up.
For now problem solved with Nova Launcher, which I think I will keep even after I decide to Root & ROM - Very interested in what is going on with Viper's custom ROM myself.
Also, if you want to try a different phone dialer, check out aTakephone, just like my old Treo!

The Evo LTE isn't dissapointing, its HTC Sense.

I've noticed a few petty complaints about the phone, and they are all pointing fingers in the wrong direction. The phone itself is great. It's the software.
The software is crashing my phone more than my og Evo. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. This phone has double the ram of the OG EVO so, it's definitely not the hardware.
Also, Sense has to be the culprit for killing multitasking. There's some ROMS out there that can be flashed on the Evo LTE, that eliminate this problem. Another Sense disappointment.
And last but not least. The look and feel of sense is beginning to look and feel very dated. This is why people are going crazy over dev support, right now.
I'm not a HTC Sense hater, but they definitely need to change it up asap. If I were them I would just put out a, high end pure Google Android device and start from scratch.
Maybe, put a scrolling setting tool bar, that scroll left to right on top of the screen, instead of a drag down bar. Change the flip clock its old and boring now. I had that on my HTC Mogul! It's time to change the game up. And I think it's about that time
Certainly wish it was a bit more polished. Wasn't there something floating around awhile back that they only had 4 months to make sense 4 with ICS?

i have to agree. sense is not bad, just not as smooth and fast as vanilla android. infact its quite slow so such amazing hardware. i check the forum a few times a day for a working version of cm9 or 10 only to be disapointed everytime.

That may be true. I think I can recall seeing a article about that.
I'm running sense 4 on my 3d, and I have to say that sense 4 is amazing. If you want a change then go with a different phone. I'm not saying that sense doesn't have minor bugs, because it does. But if you're looking for a different look and feel then change it up a bit.
But I like my Sense 4.
I love Sense, although I'm hoping Jelly Bean will make performance and stability improvements, of course. It does crash and restart for me, but rarely. It might be the ROM and apps you've loaded that are causing these issues, along with flashed mods, and so forth. Every time these things are done, increases the chances of destabilizing the platform. This is a part of the game that should be embraced.

That's definitely not out the question. Once you've been loyal to a company since the HTC Mogul, then you may find it just a little bit harder to leave from a hardware standpoint. Like I said Sense isn't bad. It's just buggy and dated.
If Sense is the same during my next upgrade, I'm definitely jumping to another phone. Sad to say.
And yes thanks to this XDA I can change it up a bit. This site has a hand in what a lot of the consumers buy, believe it or not, just because of the hard work of these Devs do to bring longevity to our phones. They spoiled us.
My reasoning now is for the users who don't root. It's a struggle right now.

Yeah, hopefully jelly bean iron some things out.
As far as the crashes, im pretty positive its sense. I have no widgets beside the sense clock and power setting widget. Everything else is minor apps that control some of nothing. My only questionable app is Facebook. That app is so horrible. It does too much and hogs data like crazy. I'm always, clearing my cache on that app. And I won't decide to root, until maybe October.

I happen to love Sense and I am not rooted and never plan to. I like the iconic flip clock and believe it sets HTC apart from all the other androids out there. I do get bored with the "look" of my screens from time to time and change things up with Beautiful Widgets, themes, keyboards and the like. I wish the continuous scroll of the home screens remained (not the carousel) however. At least with Android these phones can be totally customized, which is why I could never be an iPhone user.

I'd have to agree. I got the OG EVO on release day and absolutely loved it. Then came Gingerbread and all the sense reboots. I was hoping with this phone the sense reboots would go away, unfortunately I was wrong. It amazes me with the amount of RAM this phone has, that with very little apps installed, I only have about 200 MBs free. I ended up rooting and flashing CleanROM DE and love this EVO all over again. I just wish I wouldn't have had to root to avoid the HTC Sense reboots. I did try APEX Launcher for a bit, but noticed it would restart as well, though not quite as bad.

I wish I wasn't scared to root as of now. I know there would probably be at least two more updates from HTC are gonna come and I'll wait until then. I was gonna try Apex but thanks for the heads up. I don't use widgets and my apps are all basic, that's why the reboots are kinda bothering me.
The best phone I've ever had or used nonetheless.
I have yet to run into any problems with Sense at all. It's elegant, slimmer than before, and adds features that people from the Windows Mobile days would consider to be basic. (Hello? It's 2012, Google. Where the hell is my T9 dialing?)

This. I haven't had any lockups or freezes yet, and Sense runs better than I've ever seen it run on a phone before. Everything is smooth and aesthetically pleasing.

I was stock the entire time I had my first Evo LTE. That was for about a month and a half and I didn't have any problems. Got my new Evo yesterday (I had a radio issue that required a replacement) and rooted it because I had to start from scratch anyway. No issues rooted either.
Actually HTC Sense this year looks nice IMO. I really like the way the dock looks. One thing i dont like is the locksceen, as i fee the stock one looks best. There are some thing i wish google would incorporate into the next OS. The way HTC handles adding things to your home screens is MUCH faster than stock aosp. In stock, you have to do it one by one, or at least slowly. On sense, you do it much faster and can even add multiple widgets. Also, if u run out of space sense automatically makes a new homescreen for you. I also like the quicksettings menu (even though HTC took it off i think).
I haven't had one problem since I got the phone on launch day. With sense or anything else.
Love this device!

I like Sense 4.0 a lot; I believe it's the best UI skin out there as far as what comes from the manufacturers. I like the widgets and the unified look and functionality of everything. It's all very polished and professional.
The only problem I have with Sense is in the way it handles multitasking. I would love to be able to pause a game to answer a text or email, and come back to where I was without the game fully reloading. Or keep 2 or 3 browser tabs open without everything reloading when I come back to it from something else. Running Nova and using less widgets helps somewhat, but you lose all the "good stuff" about Sense when you go that route. So I'm patiently waiting for a good ROM that fully addresses the memory management issues while letting Sense run to it's full potential.
I have absolutely no problems with my EVO 4G LTE. If you think Sense is the same thing it's always been, try going back and using a Sense 3 phone, like the EVO 3D. Then you'll see a difference. It's just the luster of a new product has worn off for most people. Really, most of the complaints are over petty stuff. In the end, it's a phone. It plays games well, but if you want something to do more, buy a PS3/XBOX. It plays great quality movies, but if you want something to do more, buy an HDTV. Web browsing is great on this device, but if it's still not your style, buy a laptop. Sure there's a convenience of having it all there, but really, it's time to stop being petty about the small things.

Newly unlocked: prefer Sense or Viper

I know alot of folks here have recently JTAG'd or just aquired an s-off dna. so now that you've have a chance to look at the scene... what do you prefer?
The Viper team won't do Sense 5 and the Sense 5 ROMS are basically stock. So from what i can tell, Sense 5 ROMS look like the same as the DNA unrooted but with the currents/blinkfeed widget.
I haven't tried the Viper ROMS yet, but will this week. I'm just curious on what people are settling on.

I prefer Sense 5. I've tried both. Sense 5 is definitely not Sense 4 with a Blinkfeed widget...
Won't touch a sense 4 rom anymore. You can't make me.
Sense 5 is gorgeous IMHO.

Same story here.
And I honestly can't wait(even though I know I'll be waiting for a while) for viper on sense 5.
But @op, the only sense 5 rom you can call stock is joelzs stock one. All of the others are pretty customized.

Would have to throw in with the sense 5 guys. I hope the Viper team is reading and makes the call. I know they are considering it.
Minus BlinkFeed, Sense 5 is quite nice.
I run a Viper setup and a Sense 5 setup. I'm also running another sense 4+ setup that's oh so sweet. But typically speaking I keep a nandroid backup of each so I can just do a full wipe and restore what I want to run.
They both have their strong points, Viper offers the ultimate in customization.
But sense 5 has a lot of customizations and tweaks and performance improvements, especially Newt's rom. And there's a big update that should be dropping anytime now. Not as many different configuration options, but its still quite a bit improved and modified over stock.
Maybe it's because the JTAG guy have been stock so long, but I think only choosing one or the other is a big mistake. You should run one for a few days and then run the other for a few days.
Oh and blinkfeed isn't all bad, there was a lot of negative speculation pre release and still from people that haven't run it. I fully expected to hate it honestly. I'm not really a widget kind of person and I saw it as a permanent widget. But when I actually set it up and use it, I think it's pretty cool. However I don't do social networking like facebook. Generally speaking I don't even set blinkfeed up unless I'm going to be running that rom for a while. I'd like it removable but I'd MUCH rather have it there than not because I think it's good for HTC, it's something that wins over a lot of new to android type general consumers. And sales and the phones in peoples hands is better for all of us.

I like Blinkfeed. I have it set to show all the tech sites and the news I like. It does a pretty good job of summarizing the highlights. Way better than the google CURRENTS app. Although i didn't hate currents either.
I loaded viper but don't think i gave it a chance. Ive tried NOS and now on Hatka sense. Love the toggle bar and circle widgets and the built in personal hotspot.
But I'll giving Viper another go for sure. Normally I'd have about 4 to 5 restores, but with only 16 gig, i know i can't do that. I'll finishing searching for the best sense5, then back it up and go for Viper.

Currently still using Viper 1.1.3 with custom Kernel. Will update Viper soon though. I would try Sense 5 ROM but the connection in my location is just horrid.
Will NOT use Sense 5 until you can get rid of blinkfeed. Sense 4+ is good enough for me ViperDNA
lol. seems like most love Sense 5 but nobody loves blinkfeed.
I like it, it reminds me of a better 'CURRENTS'. But i'm gonna try VIPER soon,so i'm itching to see realworld customizations.

Had the Viper installed for the last few days. all i can say is wow. Not missing sense 5 one bit. The amount of customizations on this rom are just sick. But more importantly, the ease of changing these via the venom tweaks menu buttons are amazing. Can change the status bar in nearly unlimited fashion, can change fonts, can change icons, etc... All of these things can be done of course on any rom, but it's all built in with menus and buttons here. Everyday i can change my phone in so many ways without having to flash. I change my mind alot and in the past 3 days, i haven't been bored.

^^This. Precisely the reason I'm using Viper. I keep finding something new every time I go into venom tweaks
Has anyone noticed increased battery life with a custom ROM and/or kernel other than stock? I'll do my own testing when I get JTAG back, but if there's a general trend I'd be interested in hearing about it.

My battery was superb on stock rom. Lasted about 2 days of normal use.
My battery on sense 5 roms with Beastmode kernal was about 1.5 days of normal use.
I'd say Viper on it's stock kernal has been about 1.2 days of normal use. Although normal use has gone up since i have a fun menu to play with and reboot more often.
I'll be searching for the best kernal/rom combo along with battery saving tips without reducing performance over the next few days.
I personally like blink feed, but hate the Sense 5 app drawer. Everything else in Sense 5 is absolutely beautiful, and I'm generally an AOSP purist type. I'm currently running newtoroot's ROM at 320dpi with Nova launcher (because I hate the app drawer more than I like blink feed - though I wish I knew how to make it work with Nova).
Basically, Sense 5 > Viper >>>> Sense 4+
I prefer Sense compared to the custom Roms of Viper and CM10. I love sense 5
I am a fan of the very clean and very simple sense 5. I don't need all the customization that comes with Viper but it works well regardless. Just depends on what you want from your rom.
