So radios, despite common belief, does not improve signal strength (hardly at all). I don't want to buy the new Verizon signal booster for a big $250, and I'm not gunna sauder together coffee cans and antenna adapters yada yada. Is there any ways (besides those ^ and *22899 or *228) to boost service. I'm curious if anyone here has any techniques or know how on this. Thanks in advance, everyone here has been a great help so far

Don't know much about it, but I sometimes get better service when my internet is off. Also, strangely I get terrible service in my house (1 bar currently) when I'm sitting right next to a window, and I get great service at school (3+ bars) in rooms with no windows. Its all just hit and miss for me.

I think I remember reading that people in some areas were receiving better coverage by adding APNs for Alltel towers. I guess they are now part of the Verizon network now, but the stock APNs do not use them.

Truly is hit or miss. 1 bar at my house, go to another state and have 4, drive around have 3-4. I live in New London county, CT, and don't understand how I cant have good service living so close to two cities lol. I know there's plenty of towers down here

Nvm lol. Did a simple search and found it. Unfortunately, the only Alltel towers in CT (suprised there are any haha) are 3 counties north west so no help with service there. Thank you tho.

Guys I've had my Evo since its release. I love it. Had the hero before it. Loved that. I've had sprint for about 6 years. I love it. Id absolutely love to have the Evolution 3D. I got the money for it. So I was set on getting it. But yesterday I go to a local river...btw I live in san antonio. My bro who has verizon...had good signal on his blackberry. My cousin who has at&t...had good signal on his iphone. Me with my super amazing Evo...had no signal whatsoever. At work I can barely get a signal inside the building also. Like I said I love sprint and my evo. The Evo 3D is by far the phone I want the most. But it seems like people who have at&t and verizon have signal no matter what. I just wanna be able to watch videos and stuff but it seems like with sprint I can't do that. Maybe its just how sprint covers the san antonio area. Can someone help a guy out? What would you guys do if u were me? Its a tough call to make

You can flash a verizon prl to it, I'm currently doing that with my hero and I am getting great signals. You still get 3g but it forces the phone into preferred roaming , so only do that if your plan allows roaming.
Here is a thread with the prl i'm using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1089786
I think it is the latest and it will work on your Evo if you want to test how the signal is.

Well Sprint is still cheaper and if your signal is that bad I think it would be worth investing in. I mean if you really want verizon than go ahead, but I feel that the prl works perfectly and there is no need to make a switch in my opinion,
Well commingle from T-Mobile you will hate Verizon when they throttle you..
I'd say call sprint and tell them you have a network problem with slow speeds.. they will check your coverage
Prolly issue a trouble ticket and then give you a credit or something
Or they may just say f u...
Call before you switch if u do decide to go to Verizon I'm sure sprint will do what they can to keep you as a customer
And as for this nexus s
I don't like it anyways so I'm taking it back
Plus it has know data signal problems

Oh I forgot to add that you don't loose any features either. I can still use Sprint tv. I have the other sprint apps removed, but I thought it was worth adding. So pretty much you get a big increase in 3g speed with no drawbacks....If only I could add a lte chip to my phone to use 4g...
Hmmm sounds cool to me. Oh yeah and I read on engadget that san antonio is one of the first 6 cities that at&t will deploy their lte network this summer. Their headquarters use to be here before it moved to dallas. So I would expect the signal to be very good in texas

My cousin has AT&T and my other one has Verizon. Verizon hardly ever drops calls (same w/ Sprint). AT&T on the other hand...STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!! They're crazy and lock down their devices more than any other carrier. The amazon Market doesn't even work on the AT&T devices.
IF you switch, go to Verizon, but I still suggest staying with Sprint just because they're the cheapest. Try contacting them and see if you can get some type of discount on your plan for crappy service.
EDIT: Within my 10 mile radius @ my house, I have one dead spot. lol! (Jacksonville Florida)
I know this won't help you when your out and about but..since you are a six year customer if you call Sprint and tell them your signal blows they will probrably give you an airwave device..I got one no prob..and now I have great signal for about 100 yards in any direction from the device..its free u just need cable internet..only drawback is that it blocks other cdma devices besides Sprint from getting signal within range of it..I think you can fix that in most phones roaming settings tho
Yeah at&t is a last resort. I read up more on the verizon prls. I don't really feel comfortable doing that. I would consider calling sprint. But the thing is I get good signal at home. Just not anywhere else...lol. at work it sux...at our other house 45 mind away it sux. Its hard to figure out

Hey, I'm new to Jacksonville. Is it worth getting 4g service here? I want to be able to tether the 4g onto my laptop in my apartment. What do you think of the service in the area?????
sprints network in san antonio is pure **** right now. they gave me a date of 6/17 when they will have the towers fixed in my area, culebra/1604 area. but whether that is true i doubt it since this will be about the 4th date they have given for when the towers will be fixed.

4G is available roughly about 20% of the time near me. It's not @ my house, but it is VERY strong outside my neighborhood. (lol).
When I do have it, I get from 1 mbps to 10 mbps. It's really quick for a phone, especially anything over 2 mbps.
EDIT: You can look up Clear's network coverage and see if you're covered. The map literally shows a dead area about a 20 foot radius around my house. LOL
So I searched and didn't really see anything relevant to this. Sorry if I'm re-posting. I recently upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S Showcase from CSpire from my old HTC Hero. What I was wondering is how close these phones are to the Fascinate. I flashed Cyanogenmod onto the phone and only after it has been working flawlessly I realized I flashed the Fascinate version instead of the Showcase version. Are there any problems with this. As of now I woudn't think so as it has been ~30 hours and is working awesome!

yes the showcase/fascinate/mesmerize are all very similar. The difference is the showcase/mes are gsm and the fascinate is cdma. Usually flashing anything fascinate related on the showcase will break data and vice versa... but if cm7 is working for you then dont mess with it lol. Fyi for future reference check out rootzwiki.com for showcase/mes support.
Well, I'm glad it worked then! Ha. I'm actually not a total noob, just didn't think about it and when I saw the phone that looked like mine I flashed it. Never really thought about the fact that there were so many Galaxy S types out there!
I have not flashed CM7 with there being so many people reporting it faulty. However, I have only been looking at the "stable" cm7 for showcase.
These are the reported issues from the Showcase release.
No Sms/Mms
No Data or voice/forced roaming
Faulty Wifi functionality
Have you noticed and of these issues?
If I can safely flash CM7 for fascinate on my Cspire Showcase, I would be ecstatic.
Thanks in advance

I'm pretty sure the Mezmerize and Showcase are CDMA as well not GSM. Cspire and US Cellular are CDMA systems.

The Samsung Mesmerize, Showcase, and Fascinate are all CDMA technology phones.
I was able to flash the Verizon Fascinate CM7 to the CSpire Showcase successfully. The only concern is it shows Verizon network connection. This might cause major data charges for anyone without an unlimited plan.
Just be aware that CSpire's user agreement states, "If Customer's usage of the Services (including voice and data and regardless of Service plan) on other carrier's networks (roaming or off-network usage) exceeds Customer's off-network usage allowance, C Spire may at its option terminate Customer's Service or access Service, deny Customer's continued use of other carriers' coverage, change Customer's plan to one imposing usage charges for roaming usage, or change Customer's plan as necessary in the discretion of C Spire."
Hopefully the Cyanogen Mod team will repair the broken Showcase CM7 soon, so we do not have to worry about these issues.
On the positive side, everything seems to be functioning properly with the Fascinate CM7. Only complaint is the soft keys sometimes stay lit when the screen times out.

I don't think the phone saying Verizon Wireless actually means you are using Verizon's network. As long as your modem and PRL are the same you should still be using CSpire's towers. The first stock GB ROM we had was a Mezmerise/Showcase ported to the Fascinate. It always said "Digital Roaming" yet it still was using Verizon's network. If this isn't accurate someone please correct me.

You are probably right, my PRL and modem (S:i500.05 K.EI20) are the same as from the original C Spire rom. My concern comes from C Spire having a roaming agreement with Verizon, meaning the PRL and modem are allowed to use Verizon's network with no restrictions.
How did you determine that you were using Verizon and not roaming?
The only way I can think of to test this is to be in an area with no Verizon coverage. Given, I may be wrong and you might have another solution.

Well I am a VZ user and they have a roaming agreement with Nex-Tech Wireless where I live. The way I tell that I'm on a Nex-Tech tower is my phone says "Extended Network" when it switches to one. I don't know if you're will say it or not but you can find out like you said by going to an area where you only get VZ coverage and no CSpire coverage and see what it says.

yes you are correct...my mistake!
First off phone is awesome! I do have a pre order for an s3 from best buy though, so I will be running stock for at least 29 days and putting the phone through its paces. I came from Verizon and the service was overpriced for what I was getting but data speeds were great most of the time. I can deal with this on sprint by using WiFi more which is in abundance on long island. I know sprint is upgrading service, but did I make a mistake leaving Verizon?
If you have access to wifi at home and work you should be good. This is a great phone

No... I'm skeptical about these changes to the network, but I think Sprint is doing the right thing.

Not sure if your reference to the "29 Days" is to the trial period of the phone before committing to it. On Sprint, it has been reduced to 14 Days.... just thought I would throw that out there if you thought you had 30 days to decided if you wanted to keep the phone or not.
I'm referring to best buys policy on the phone not the service
You made the right choice - unlimited data; cheaper prices; network vision upgrade in progress.
The key is wifi. If you have access to it then you be fine. Sprints customer service is by far better then Verizon. By the way, sprints data isnt as bad as most make it out to be. I wont use it for things like downloading roms or watching videos on netflixs or YouTube. But for radio apps and normal emailing and web browsing i think you'll be fine, i know i am.

The only thing I am concerned about is their quickness to implement the changes. Once all the tower get the software upgrade, it will be legit. They went this route because had they stuck with wimax it would have meant building a LOT more towers... LTE means updating the existing ones, getting 3 or 4 times the range, and maybe building a few more in necessary areas.
Their initial plan was just simply to be the first to have true 4G... which they did successfully. But in my opinion it nipped them in the ass because as soon as everybody got their LTE implemented, it blew the balls off sprint's low range, high spectrum network, and made their "4G" look like a joke.
They are fools, but so is anybody who outrightly decides to go with them knowing their history and then complains about it. Jeez i get so sick of reading threads "o ma you'll never guess what sprint did to me!!!!" .... like stfu and blame yourself for signing the contract.
anyways, little bit of a rant, but once they get LTE up and running it will be nice, and they will. every single place there is a 4g tower, there will be LTE. and in the mean time, more towers will go up.
Service seems good so far been streaming Pandora with no buffering but Sirius xm buffers like a sob
Well, its a sad day. Returned the evo lte due to constant roaming and data drops and weak signal, For a photon. huge downgrade, but at least the photon gets constant data at a respectful speed for me. Im really disappointed about this situation and hope my galaxy s3 pre order comes in right away so I could give it a shot, if not ill go back to the evo lte and hope radio updates help it. Never been this disappointed before over a phone because i really was enjoying the other aspects of it. Photon will at least get wimax in my area. are the data drops and lack of signal reception due to hardware issues with the lte?

Just wondering if you do, what prl you may be using or radio. I just got mine yesterday and put it on Verizon and I love the phone. I lose 3G at my house sometimes but for some reason Verizon has always been that spotty for me so there may be no cure....Sprint isn't the best either at my house. The best believe it or not is AT&T. Everywhere else though usually Verizon has the best service around my town. I live in Virginia. Input would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys,
Quick thought and a question:
1. I have the LTE rocking on Page Plus, also a Verizon service. For those considering the Verizon network over Sprint's, consider Page Plus over Verizon PP for two reasons:
A. Avoid illegality of ESN cloning
B. Being kicked off the network for data abuse, cause they know those tiny, dumbphones aren't capable of such data usage
2. For those rocking these LTEs on VZW networks, even with the right MMS settings, can you guys confirm that when you get an MMS, you have to MANUALLY hit the download button to download the images? Instead of the phone automatically engaging the data to download the image, and then shutting the data off, much like all the native Verizon phones like the Rezound, for example?
Thanks for your help!

Not trying to be a smarta$$ at all here, bud, but Google is your friend on that one . So much you can find out about it, if you Google it.
But simply stated, it's an MVNO that runs on the Verizon network... Decent support, and service for reasonable price...
can i flash it to metro? if so how
VZW prepay on a 4g?
I keep hearing how some ppl have their Verizon 4g phone on the Verizon prepaid service and I need to know how I get that to happen for me. I have a droid bionic with a 4g sim but I use the VZW prepay bc I don't use my cell but about 1/2 the month (dead area for cell phone coverage in the sticks where I live) so I don't want contract pricing. I've been using one of the Verizon prepay phones but they just aren't up to par for me and I love the droids. Somebody please tell me how I get this to work?!?! I've tried transferring my service myself online to the 4g sim but of course that doesn't work and you can't even get a Verizon rep to even discuss it. Is it a matter of getting a different kind of sim for the phone, i.e. a 3g sim if they even exist in the VZW world. Is there such a thing as a prepaid sim versus a contract sim? I'm lost!
