[Q] Galaxy S over Droid X? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What one should I get for a replacement....DX crashed.

Fascinate. Bar none.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

Well if you want lots of ROMs and developer support, go with a Droid phone.
If you want no support from the manufacturer and little developer support with very few fully working ROMs- the devs we have are great though- go with a Fascinate.
Hate to say it. But it's true.

Forget to mention superior hardware on the galaxy s.... but other than that, spot on.

Droid X has a locked bootloader and hardware that's not as good as the Fascinate's. Get the Fascinate. Really, I'd recommend the Fascinate just for the SAMOLED alone, it's hard to go back to another phone's screen after you've experienced it.

I am testing both phones for work, and all in all the Droid X BLOWS as a work smartphone. The battery dies in about 6 hours for a full charge, and the Corporate Email Sync is non-existent. The only plus that I see with the Droid X is the fact that it has Froyo on it. Other that that, it blows.

Both are great phones, and I'm sure you'd be happy with either one.
However, if you're buying the phone -- not just being given one through Asurion -- it would be really silly to buy either the X or the Fascinate right now when you can get the Thunderbolt for the same price (or even slightly less -- 174.99/2yr on Amazon).

i owned a DX
the fascinate is a better phone with the correct ROM & kernel installed
the deplay is second to none on this phone

Guess what!
I have the Galaxy S now!!! Any advice to give me?

Make sure your GPS works. If it doesn't exchange it.
When you have one with a GPS that works, Odin to EB01, then install the latest Super Clean with the latest open source kernel.

Yeah, don't expect updates. Ever.

Have you used the Fascinate? I had the DX since release then used the Fascinate once and felt like I was screwed. The screen is reason enough.

If you want a phone that has horrible GPS, bad battery life, Bing search, crashes all the time, and still on 2.1 with no hope for 2.2, then go with the Fascinate.
If you want a phone that works righ out of the box, then get the Droid X.
The Droid X won't have any AOSP ROMs because of the locked Bootloader.
The Fascinate have been out for 9 - 10 months and still doesn't have any fully working AOSP ROMs because of lack of source and bad samsung programing.
I sold my Fascinate and I'm on a Droid X running Gingerbread. I couldn't be happier.
Did I mention the Fascinate is still running 2.1!!!

True, the fascinate has a lot of modifications that need to be done out of the box and the Droid X has a locked bootloader, however, Vanilla Froyo is a fully functional AOSP ROM for the fascinate on 2.2. The Fascinate has superior hardware. It runs great when compared to a Droid X IMO (as soon as you get rid of verizon and samsung shoddy programming). I don't know a whole lot about the Droid X community, which it could be an awesome community, however I will say that the Fascinate Dev community is fantastic and I wouldn't trade them in for any other group out there.

Plus, the Droid X is one ugly ass phone.

Go into the Dev community and read a lot about the ROMs and the differences between the ROMs. I'm not an official developer, but I like to tinker myself with the codes. If I were you, try Superclean with Voodoo, Vanilla Froyo with Voodoo (I think it only comes with voodoo), and Miui (which only comes with Voodoo). If you are adventerous try Cyanogen Mod 7 test build (Gingerbread). I myself run the 4/4 Miui Test ROM from the IRC channel and love it.

My GPS works fine. My battery life is standard for a smart phone, 1-2 days between charges, depending on use, and from what I've heard, the DX is worse on battery. Bing isn't an issue and can be replaced. My phone doesn't crash unless I do something that causes it (testing a kernel for example), and I've been on 2.2 since January.

At least the Fascinate users have an option to use an AOSP rom, regardless of how functional it is. I'm guessing that AOSP will be fully functional at some point, though it could still be a few months.

Lastly, I like how you're comparing a STOCK Fascinate to a non-stock DX. Apples and oranges much?

I've used a Fascinate and a Droid X myself (as well as some other phones including other droids, iphones, and winmo phones), and while each of them had certain characteristics I did not care for, I still like the Fascinate the best.. Especially running a rom such as SC on it!
I was thinking I might go get myself a TB when reading about them before they were available,, but then after playing around with one in a store I actually decided I still like the Fascinate better (TB was just too thick of a device for my preference).
Like everyone else, I hate the fact that it seems the Fascinate is one of the worse phones to have if you desire factory updates,, but hey with a dev community like we have to fill that one shortcoming,, I am one happy camper!

Droid X has a larger screen, that's about it. And more RAM.
Other than that. The Fascinate out performs the X in just about everything. (Even on 2.1 and honestly, if you don't care for flash, 2.2 isn't too big a deal)
Benchmark nerds, need not apply.
The screen alone, as someone pointed out already, is amazing.
And I feel my fascinate is far more "hackable" than the X will ever dream of being.
I used to own the X and I was looking desperately anywhere to find someone dumb enough to buy it. Sure enough, someone broke their original droid and bought my X for $200. Thank god, hated that thing.

Ok when I was on the phone odering it they said everything was good to go but I didnt have a credit card with me at the time and I had to call back and they said they can only give me a Droid x since it was for replacement and we talked for 2 more hours! So now I have a Droid X for trade....Any tips for when someone offers to trade me their phone?

[Q] Fascinate or Incredible?

Which Phone to keep, Which Phone to sell. I have a fascinate and also a Droid Incredible I have noticed that there is very little roms for the Fascinate but dont want to give up hope yet. The Incredible has a ton of roms out there but has terrible battery life so its really a toss up of what phone I want to keep and what one I want to sell. Any suggestions?
Ill buy the incredible from you. And on roms the fascinate will get many more when 2.2 source code is released
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Definitely sell the Incredible if the only reason you're thinking about ditching the Fassy is lack of ROMs. As said, they'll be aplenty when the source code is released.

This.
I'd be curious as to what the people on the Droid Incredible forum might recommend though .
Though updates sometimes seem to come at a glacial pace, they're slowly starting to pick up speed now. It's a good time to have a Fascinate.
So which phone are you saying has crappy hardware? 2.2 roms and source code are the ever going questions of when? We do have a couple customs roms available to us at the present time but until the source code comes out thats all we can do it wait. We've heard anything from 2.2 to completely skipping 2.2 to 2.3...Guess we will just have to wait and see.
As for the Incredible I have an extended 1750 battery, stock battery, case (maybe another case but need to locate the top peice), 2 screen protectors, wall charger, car charger and the original box for it. If anyone wants it send me a pm.
sell whichever one you want. Personally I HAD an incredible, so you know my choice.
It is going to depend on how you use it.
For me:
Pro Incredible....
I'm pretty sure I would prefer HTC Sense (or whatever it is called) over Touch Wiz.
The Fascinate max charge rate is about 650ma., so using it as a GPS on my motorcycle at high brightness while charging runs the battery dead. (Having used HTC WinMo devices, I suspect that is not an issue / less an issue on the Incredible)
Pro Fascinate...
Love the screen indoors.
Slightly larger battery capacity.
Has a normal flat case backside. (not a real issue, but odd)
I don't play with roms much, so I'm good with the Fascinate as is.
you're making an assumption about htc sense. I know having used htc sense, I prefer touchwiz. I've used my fascinate as a gps in my car with the screen on maximum brightness while playing music and/or being used as a phone (at the same time as being a gps), and the phone charges in my car. so I don't know why it wouldn't on a motorcycle.
I prefer the fascinate for many reasons. the battery life is great, the phone works great, especially on froyo, the screen is better, no funky case, ect...

As for Sense, from when I used it on the WinMo devices, I prefered it. But I have only used Sense for a short time on an Incredible before I returned it for the Fascinate. So yes, long term, TouchWiz may be a bit better.
On the car charging, high brightness thing, it is right at the 'edge'. If I am streaming maps in a weak signal area, the battery will discharge and the phone gets hot. In a strong signal area, the battery may actually charge some. That is at the highest charge rate that the phone can use of 650ma. But that doesn't say that the Incredible is any better, just that other HTC hardware was.

The Fascinate (and other SGS phones) have the best hardware on the market for a single core Android phone.
I am loosing hope that any great ROMs will ever be out for fascinate.
Toss MIUI on the Incredible and keep that!

I have both phones, and same as you I prefer the Fascinate.
Love the gorilla glass on the fascinate.
I may have the opportunity to trade my Fascinate for an Incredible (found a post on craigslist and just waiting for his response) and I am trying to decide if I should do this or not. What are some pros and cons of the Incredible as opposed to the Fascinate?
Also, I am slightly reluctant based on the facts that I DO really like my Fascinate, and I have already invested so much time and energy into it that I feel like it might be kind of a shame to part with it. However, I know there are a lot more options for the Incredible.
Just looking for some insight that's all.

I just made the transition last week. We are spoiled with the amound of ROMs and devs over at Incredible forum.
But good thing about this phone is the 4" screen, which is just nice for my liking, as I've grown to dislike 3.7". Super AMOLED also looks slightly better than AMOLED.
However, I'm hoping there will be more ROMs soon for the Fascinate. It will have a lot of catch up to do as Froyo source is not even out yet while Dinc is already bracing for more GB ROMs.

[Q] X2 vs TB

Hello forum,
I've read about 9 hrs worth of info on here in 2 days. I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. I will try and keep this short, I might fail.
I came from an org d1 with cm7, great phone. Its old hardware and I was due for an upgrade.
I just got the HTC Thunderbolt 2 days ago. I'm not very impressed with it AT ALL. I realllllly hate the HTC SENSE gui. I've never liked HTC to begin with. But the TB had 4g (which I just found out I wont get untill 2013) and a FF Camera. I don't really care about 4G anymore, any good crap I do over WiFi anyways. As far as the FF Camera, it was fun, im over it.
I have 14 days (12) to change my mind and was told I can switch phones. I really wanted the X2 in the first place, but I went with the TB. What I really want is just a beast phone that can last 2 years with upcoming tech. Everyone I hear talking about the dual core stuff says its over rated because no OS or APPs use it yet. I've been watching some Videos on the X2 and Im liking it more.
What I wonder is if its going to have any development? The HTC TB already has tons of custom ROMs and CM7 is about there. Do you guys think the X2 will get any attention? Will there be custom ROMs? I really dont like MOTOBLUR but I would be able to put up with it for 6 months over the sense.
How is the battery? Without 4G even turned on I cant even get a full day off this TB.
Is it pretty smooth and fast? I'm a little worried about the RAM .... 512 vs 768? I mean coming from the D1 512 should be fine..... but does it feel smooth?
Are there ways right now (I know you can root) to debloat it and take off MOTOBLUR ? I really just want a clean AOSP, but I'm very willing to wait for development. I just wonder if the X2 will get any attention.
Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Sorry so long.
If you want custom roms then stick with the Thunderbolt. Until the Motorola bootloader gets unlocked you won't be able to fully flash a custom rom.
Also the X2 does not have MOTOBLUR on it. And yes it is possible to root using gingerbreak and remove any bloatware.
I just got my X2 yesterday and the UI seems to be a lot smoother with the dual core processor compared to my old X. If you don't get 4G coverage then I would definitely go with the X2. Also in my experience Motorola phones tend to have better battery life over HTC.
The X2 does have MOTOBLUR but it is the updated version they use normally with gingerbread which is not as bad as the version they had before.
As for development like the previous poster said, until Motorola unlocks the bootloader and an sbf is found/created. ROMs are out of the question at the moment..
Personally I came from the TB and although the TB had all the custom ROMs th X2 has made me happy with the smooth UI, after some tweaking, and the battery life is alot better.
It's going to be a trade-off. If you like to root/ mod you're going to have to wait on the X2 for a while. I read they just cracked the Droid X for CM 7, so there's hope but no idea on when we might have a full range of option for the X2.
On the other hand, the DX2 works great out of the box and my only major complaint is no Gingerbread yet. I've used both and, given the TB's battery life sucks and I'm not around a 4G area at work or home and won't be for a while, the X2 is the better option in my opinion. The TB is not a bad phone over all, but without the 4G it's not a compelling device to need right now IMO.
I'd recommend you go with the X2 and wait until 4G LTE is both widespread and all the bugs are worked out in the system.
I've tried all of Verizon's 4G phones within my 14 day return period. (I'm paying full price, so I didn't just want to settle with playing with a floor model for a few minutes to make a decision.) Anyway, it was something about each one that made me not want to keep them. (Although I saw the Charge received an update that made the phone 2-3 times better from what I'm reading from users across different forms.) But I settled with the DX2. Far better signal than any of the others I had. Much better battery life. Better build quality by far. As smooth as the Thunderbolt, even with 512 of RAM. And it has the Dual Core processors, which will eventually be beneficial once more phones get them and more developers start working around them, software and app wise. I get 4G in my area in 2 months and I still choose to go with a 3G phone, because a page loading a few seconds faster on 4G than mine does on 3G, has absolutely no importance in my life. I think ffc's are kind of overrated right now, but will be the norm in the future when almost everyone has a phone with a camera on it. We can only hope Motorola will unlock the bootloader. I doubt Verizon would approve of that, but still, the original Droid X received some pretty good attention from dev's. As you can see, it was thought of enough that someone worked hard to get CM7 on there. So the dev attention will be there.
Thanks for all your help guys..... still a tough choice...
But since the X2 has a "locked bootloader" that means there will never be custom ROMs untill MOTO themselfs release an update to unlock it or what? Did the ORG droid X have a locked bootloader? Wasnt there custom roms on it?
I had a thunderbolt but the battery life was just to bad for me to keep it when i was near stl and had 4g it went from 100% to 25 in no time flat so i couldnt handle that. the droid x2 with all the bloat ware ran decently fast but once u take off bloat ware its great phone with much better battery but if you want 4g id say go with lg revolution it seems to be better i only played with in store but i liked it also

No, Yes and Yes. The bootloader on the original X is still locked. That just means that you don't have complete control over the kernel. Custom roms can certainly still be added once root is established. Also, if anybody's been watching the blogs, CM7 has been release for the original X. It's a bit of backwards magic of loading overtop and after the original kernel, but it's reported to be working great.
Indeed, I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that CM7 on the DX means we're in line for it on the X2!

Haha, me and you are both in the same place
I'm leaning towards returning the X2 and getting the Tbolt, but the extra $135 I'll have to pay is making me unsure..since I have no income.
The good thing is, is that I read earlier today that the new Nexus phone is supposed to have a LTE radio. (Verizon maybe?!) Either that or the Galaxy S 2..both seem like good choices.

Besides, the Charge is still a single core phone.
OMG ! Some of you people are so picky! If I could have my X2's babies I would! I love this phone and I'm in the same situation as the OP. I won't get 4G til around until 2013 and I'll be eligible for an upgrade in January 2013. By then, I'm hoping to get whatever new multi-core, 4G, 3D display, FFC phone they have because I'm sure all of that will be more of a standard *AND* hopefully there will be better battery life for those kinds of features. Until then, gogo Droid X2!
FFC isn't all that great without 4G anyway and even if it was great on 3G, I still don't see myself using it until video calling becomes much more popular. I don't even know anyone else with an FFC for video calling, so how useful is that?? You gotta ask yourself: Who do I know with FFCs? and: Are we really gonna video chat a lot? Unless you're a hardcore SKYPEr or you are on business trips away from your wife and kids a lot, why not just stick to the casual video chatting you may or may not do on your PC?
Minus the custom ROM this is still a great phone and handsdown a top choice if you're gonna be outside the 4G bubbles for a while! Just sayin'.
You won't see any custom development until both an SBF file and the first update to the phone release. For the record, I'm quite surprised neither have leaked yet. Usually the SBF leaks in the first week or two and there is an update within the first couple weeks to fix stability issues. The X2 has so many stability issues that I think they're just going to push GB to the device rather than try to fix all the Froyo problems. That being said, it could still be a while before we see GB. I also wouldn't own this phone without being willing to root it. Too unstable without being able to fix the memory allocation problems.

That's a good point. Now that I think about it, a single core phone isnt worth $300 dollars , even if it has 4G... I just rooted my X2, and now I going to try to uninstall the bloat, but it already feels faster.

I'll second the comment that nearly all the VZW phones involve compromises of some sort. The compromises on the X2 are the lack of 4G, the not-quite-top-tier screen, and the fact that we might not see custom ROMs for a very long time.
That said, my phone is my lifeline, and the X2 meets my need for good build quality, good reception, a loud speaker (I'm a little hard at hearing), and that can get me into and out of my work-related apps quickly.
I feel like I got a good PHONE that's solid, loud, reliable, and pretty quick. Good enough for me for now. If I get Cryogen on it, then all the better, but it won't kill it for me.
Chris
I had the TB and it was a POS. Bad gps, light leaks, horrible battery, terrible speaker, kickstand started peeling after a month. I'm not saying my DX2 is perfect, but it kicks the TB's ass. Love my dual core monster.

Seems Like an Odd Replacement To Me...

Long story short Verizon is replacing my Eris due to trackball issues. What I found odd is they want to replace it now with a Samsung Fascinate unless I want to wait for a refurb Eris to show up. I know almost nothing about the Fascinate. Anyone have any input or thoughts?.......actually now my choices have expanded .....wait for another refurb Eris, or get a Fascinate or Incredible 1 now....any of em is a free option.
I'd go with the fascinate. They just went end of life but Id like the bigger screen.

It was very much a toss-up but I went with the Incredible especially since I am getting a free extended life battery with it.

I say good choice. I love my inc and even got my hands on a second one for my wife so I can have my Eris back to be able to work on stuff here a little easier lol.

Personally, I'd take the DInc. It's like the Eris on steroids.
I love the new TouchWiz 4.0 on the Galaxy S II devices, but Samsung Fascinate runs on TW 3.0, which is a little iffy.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think a lot of HTC Desire and TBolt ROMs, mods, etc. can be easily ported to the DInc (as opposed to the amount of work it take to port something to the Eris), so you'll have more options.
I would also vote for the Incredible. I worked on rooting one for a friend, and it's a nice phone. It will be a lot like the Eris, only much faster. Also Verizon is getting ready to push Gingerbread to the Incredible. It has already been pushed to some phones.
There's currently no root method for the Incredible on Gingerbread, if that's a factor.

Uhh.. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt since you were a former HTC user, so I won't rank on ya but unfortunately, our Motorola devices are still currently locked in terms of their boot-loaders. You'll notice threads in this forum such as Operation MOSH (Make OurSelves Heard) and other various complaints and such about the boot-loader being locked down.
Now with that said, a locked boot-loader isn't necessary a bad thing, especially on the RAZR MAXX. It all depends upon what type of user you are. If you are a deep enthusiast or developer who likes the freedom to flash fully-customizable ROMs, then if you choose a Motorola product, you'll have to wait until Motorola finally gives in. We're hoping to eventually get Motorola to unlock their bootloaders as they promised that they would try to by the end of 2011.
However, just recently a "Developer Edition" of the Motorola RAZR has been released in the EU. This device has an unlockable bootloader, but at the expense of no warranty and full-price cost.
Aside from the locked bootloader, I love my RAZR MAXX. It's the best phone out there amongst the other RAZRs with its extended battery life, solid build, and fluid UI.
Despite the locked bootloader, there are a few ROMs in development for the RAZR, including Hashcode's ICS port that he is working on (Soon to come). The downside is we're stuck with the kernel we have locked down until a solution can be found.
Nevertheless, its all based on personal preference really. I touted between the HTC Rezound and MAXX for a while, until I decided that the MAXX was a better fit for me.
thanks for the info. I am no too worried about roms so much as free wifi and bluetooth tethering to my xoom. might just check it out in the store to see if it is possible. This helps alot though! Hopefully they are releasing the dev version to test a free patch to the devices.
EDIT:: seems there is bluetooth tether, and root access.
I also wonder if the Razr is worth picking up. I am currently an owner of an Motorola Xoom and I love that device its pure awesomness. But I heard many people had issue's with the screen, the sim-card is disconnecting with the device, faulty headphone jack etc. Is that something common`? I have previously owned: SGS, ZTE Blade and HTC Desire Z. All 3 had terrible built quality.
I currently own the razr and I got to say this is the first moto phone that I actually love. Besides the obvious downsides like the locked boot loader and battery its a great device. It is extremely thin, light, fast, and durable you wouldn't think that moto made it. I previuosly owned the moto bionic which was the worst phone I ever owned and I also owned an HTC Dinc, best phone I ever owned, to bad the usb port gave way. I would say the the razr is almost a cross between the two... sorta.
Is ICS promised to get released official for Razr?

I can report no problems with my MAXX that others have reported with their RAZR. Build quality is on the Motorola is superb. I have owned several DROID devices by Motorola, and that is certainly something they did right to say the least.
The Razr is definitely worth buying. I've had mine for about a month and it's been flawless. I've got it rooted, installed a cwm recovery and Shady's Arctic themed rom. Runs great.
And you don't have to be rooted to enjoy tethering with PDAnet.

Is 475€ good price for the Razr? (633$) without contract ofc.
Really like mine so far

DROID 4

Who's gonna pony up for the D4 tomorrow?

Physical keyboard? No thanks.

Meh. Spec wise it's nice, but it's really just a RAZR with a keyboard. Battery isn't that impressive, around 1800 mAh IIRC (Dx2 stock is 1500), and with 4G LTE this'll be another charge in the morning, charge in the evening type phone (if you last till the evening) AND the battery isn't even removable!
Plus there's always that bootloader issue and the fact it isn't running ICS, which means it'll be getting that after the razr, xoom and bionic.
No thanks. I'm good on Moto devices for a while anyway.

Who cares, just another locked down phone imo
The X2 is my final Motorola device ever. Motorola ticked me off with their broken promises and blatant disregard for the X2. They drop support on their phones faster than flies on crap.

Razr with a keyboard is exactly what I want. Plus 4g.

Honestly if any newer phone, I'd go with RAZR MAXX hands down. That battery let alone is worth it, and I'd love to see every newer phone have that size. That battery on the X2 is ridiculously big.

QFT!
I've got about 6 months left on this phone and then I'm done with Moto if they haven't changed their ways (which I don't see happening).
The x2 will also be my last Motorola phone. I miss being able to mod my phone. I have cm7 now but the lack of roms really makes me want to switch.

There's not a lack of ROMs. In fact, we have a lot of ROMs:
Liberty - although it appears development has stopped
Molten - Magma is supposedly on the horizon
CM7 - another release is forthcoming in a few days per DZK
MIUI - still a work in progress
CM9 - not released yet, but DZK is working on it
Eclipse - Nitro is constantly working on this. 2.0.4 was just released.
So, lack of ROMs isn't an issue with this phone. I'd say we have quite a lot to choose from.
What has us upset is apparently, no ICS and no unlocked bootloader. The latter is a big issue because they promised they would start unlocking bootloaders. To this date, there is just ONE phone that has a bootloader unlocked and it hasn't been released yet - the Droid RAZR Developer Edition and who's to say whether or not Verizon will release this phone onto their network. My feeling is no AND I don't want to purchase ANOTHER Motorola phone just to get my bootloader unlocked.
That is really the ONLY reason I'm not going with Moto anymore. I'm also looking into getting off of Verizon. Problem is, I really need the coverage and no other carrier has the coverage I need in the areas I go to and I must have my coverage, period. So, I'm probably stuck with Verizon, so I just need to see if I can find a phone on Verizon that has the bootloader unlocked. Supposedly, HTC has been allowed to unlock some of their bootloaders on Verizon, so I'll probably go that route.

When I first got my phone I had a choice between the Droid X2 or the Droid 3. I've never had an android phone before so I didnt know what the differences were as far as ROMs and such. So the only reason I didnt get the Droid 3 is because of the slide out keyboard. Not that I had a problem with a slide out physical keyboard (I DID have a Pre Plus before this), I would just never use it. I dont like using my phone in portrait mode. I dont know why. It just doesnt seem comfortable to me. So I wouldnt get a phone with a portrait slide out keyboard, which means I will probably never get a phone from the Droid series. Im fairly happy with my DX2. But then again, with this being my first android phone, I dont know what its like to have an unlocked bootloader. My next phone will probably not be Motorola just to see what other phones can do.

Ummm hell yes, it does! WasabiWa83 has a Rezound (previous Droid X2 owner) and raves about it. It is quite possibly one of the most amazing phones I have ever seen. Unless something better comes out in the next few months, my next phone will be a Rezound.
P.S. - WasabiWa83 also does custom signatures, wallpapers, posters, etc for phones/computers if anyone is interested! I've had him do some for me (he actually created my sig, my phone's homescreen wallpaper, and my computer's desktop wallpaper), and his work is amazing, whether you want something big or small.
