[Q] no phone in QPST / CDMAworkshop - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

after I accidently did EFS on ODIN, I cannot get the phone to go into the DM mode. I tried to flash again using atlas v2.2.pit and EB01 Stock rom, but no luck yet.
I have the phone flashed to metro, so I need to update PRL on it.
Could somebody direct me into the right direction?
Right now on QPST, it's saying no phone,
and in CDMA workshop, I can connect to the port, but cannot read from it.
It's keep on searching for the phone in DM mode which I had put it in with **usbui.
Thank you in advance.

the meid is stil intact, I did manual programming for MDN, MIN, but since PRL is from verizon, I have to flash metro's. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I tried:
EB01 - **usbui
Eclair - Dial up networking
no luck so far..

Bump. Anybody?

You Might be able to re odin in PDA, always pda never anywhere else. if not your gonna need to heimdall it back. dont worry your phone IS recoverable from this, i know i've done it one on accident, and a few times on purpose just to see if the Fascinate was as impossible to truly brick as i've heard. Turns out the damn thing is pretty much brickproof as a phone can get. if you need files or help either post here or pm me and i will walk you thru it.

thank you.
I am just keep on trying to odin the different PDAs right now without the pit or the EFS checked, but I've tried DI01, DL09, EB01 and still no luck..

still no luck in QPST / CDMA workshop.
I've flashed using the pit files with it, and so on..
wow this is really getting onto me.

Ok so your gomma have to use heimdall to get it back. I will be back home in 30 mins where i have access to my computer and i can send you the files you need wirh a walk thru. Be patient we will get you back up and running.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App

Ok so i don't know how to change it to metro pcs but it sounds like you already know how to and have successfully done that before. I am not trying to insult anyone's intelligence but this walk-through will be step by step so follow along, although i don't think it is possible to completely brick this phone short of actually smashing it, lets not take unnecessary chances. First go here http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?0zpydb4mt5o8vo3, unzip this and open the folder. In this folder you will find another folder labeled Drivers, open it and you will see a program called zadig. Now put your Phone into download mode, that is take out the battery and plug it into your PC with the cable that came with the phone when you got it, then press and hold the down volume button till a yellow triangle and droid digging show up, now you are in download mode. Next double click zadig and when it opens, click on options and click list all devices. Now drop the usb dropdown box and you will find an option for samsung usb driver, select it then click install drivers. the usual install stuff from windows about do you want to install this, yes you do. Now If the warning about publisher could not be verified, whatever, install anyway. You are almost ready to get your phone working again. Now you need the files for this program to install, so go Here http://www.multiupload.com/I9HBT8MXN1 and get them. Then here http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?26xbh796jmwvwqb for the pit file. After download is complete unzip the .tar.md5 file winzip/7zip/jzip, whatever zip file program you use, extract to a file, mine is named EB01heimdall, so i know when i need it again. Now back into the heimdall file you opened earlier and click the application called heimdall-frontend. here is where you can go wrong so i will do this side by side with heimdall names and eb01 file names.
heimdallon this side of =eb01 file names on this side.
In Repartition:
PIT=atlas_v2.2.pit
In PDA/Code:
FactoryFS=factoryfs.frs
Kernel(zImage)=zImage
Param.lfs=param.lfs
Primary Bootloader=boot.bin
Secondary Bootloader=slb.bin
In CSC:
Cache=cache.rfs
Database Data=dbdata.rfs
In Other:
Modem=modem.bin
Recovery=recovery.bin
Now you are ready to run heimdall, but you say you have a file in eb01 left called movinand.bin? why, yes you are correct and since there are no places left in heimdall to put it, now what? Nothing it wont be used in this program and yes your phone will still work. So after a simple answer of data, i went looking for more info, movinand.bin is a flash program to access data storage at less cost than using soldered in hardware, REALLY, see herehttp://www.letsgodigital.org/en/13819/samsung_8gb_movinand/. Now that we have all the files loaded into the correct spots, the necessary drivers installed, and our phone in download mode, the start button will be able to be clicked, not shaded outlines like before, did you even notice that? If everything was fallowed step by step in this tutorial than go ahead and click the START button and get your brick back to being a Fascinate. After heimdall finishes reboot your working VWZ stock, bing bloated, working Fascinate. after this is completed successfully you use odin again.
Why was this necessary, as far as i can find out, through research, and the five yes that's right i said 5, times i have HAD to do this because my phone would not recover through odin, it seems to be, dbdata, can not mount. This has happened to me because I didn't remove voodoo, or flashed a pre edify rom after accidently putting clockwork orange, which is for edify, on a non edify rom. So moral of the story is twofold, yes it is very likely it can be fixed, and remove voodoo before going to nonvoodoo, and unless you are on an edify rom stay away from clockwork orange.

Thank you. I'm at work right now so I cannot read it throughly, but I'll make sure to try your method. Hopefully this will get me back on to the network.
Thanks!

sorry, but while I am at it, do you have links to where I can download the softwares mentioned above? Thank you

Updated OP above, fixed links.

ok. I still haven't been able to connect it to the computer..
and I did heimdall for 7 times but no luck.
What could be the problem?

I found something strange..
when I go into system selection, and choose home only, I lose the signal.
But when I use the Automatic, it goes into Roaming mode.
When I go into about phone, choose status, the network is unknown.

Hmmm, no idea?? Since the Mod wont let us post questions in the Development section and none of our resident geniuses have found your post yet, i will PM the link to a few and ask if they can help you out, this is above me, Sorry.

thank you very much. I'll be keep on trying to figure out what is what..
I am wondering if I should do something with odin and try to see if it brings back anything..

seems like something is messed up in the /efs.
The MEID is still intact, but the QPST is not recognizing the phone..
Funny thing is, it creates a port for the diagnosis WDM so I can connect to it without a problem. The only thing is it's not connecting it to the DM mode..
does anybody have a backup of /efs? seems like the guys in Captivate forums backup their efs but I haven't came across a single one in our forum..

ok... so I checked my /efs
and it's empty!!!
is there any way to recover /efs ?
I think this is the only reason it's not connecting to the QPST

So i found this thread today and thought it might be helpful to you. Also the Devs that have been able to get back to me don't really know anything useful about QTSP. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850233
Also links to get some generic use Samsung drivers, maybe they will let you connect. http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?6uol6mb2pcwiuxc and http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?tixlaab9iiokk9q
Let me know whether this helps you or not, if not I will look more for some info on it and post here for you as I find anything that might be useful.

Thank you for looking after me. I really appreciate it.
Those were the instructions given to flash it to Metro.
The thing is, I cannot get it to enter DM mode.
I guess I'll be comparing my epic's /efs and see if that does anything..
If I had access to another Fascinate, I think I can compare what's different, but I guess I'll have to start with epic for now..

Try google for Verizon Samsung Fascinate efs, maybe someone has a post out there with the info you need. i was looking into that last night but without being able to see exactly what your missing I can't be certain anything i found would have helped.

[Q] Need help badly.....

I know I'll be the millionth idiot who asked this question, but I've never come across this before. I am running Bionix 1.9 with Jac's OCUV kernal. I tried flashing a newer kernal to help battery life, but found the phone froze up alot and after playing around with some different settings, I realized I should have just been happy with what I had. Long story short, I tried flashing a stock JI6 kernal and then found myself stuck at the boot screen. I've tried to work with ODIN, but am not very familiar with it, and I think i've just found a new brick for the front of the house. I tried running ODIN and now there is a logo of a computer and a phone with a yellow triangle in between. I've tried to boot into download mode, but it just flashes once and then back to the phone and computer logo. I am seriously scared I bricked this thing and I just wish I'd left things alone. I have read various forums and most of what it sounds like I need to do is over my head. Sure I shouldn't have done this, but it really didn't sound too difficult and I've done similar things before....any help would be greatly appreciated. I wonder if there is anyone on the forums in the Syracuse or central New York region who might be able to help in person if possible. HEEEEEEELLLLLLPPPPP!!!!
This is fixable. I've had this issue and fixed it before. It requires odin though. Odin interacts with the phone through download mode, so if you aren't in download mode while you are ODINing, it won't work. How are you trying to get into download mode? I usually plug it into USB as I'm holding both the volume buttons and it always works for me. Once you get it into download mode its simple, you just need to go to the Vibrant Bible and get the Stock JFD and flash that with repartition checked in Odin.
Follow this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475
Also, to get into download mode I:
1. Pull, then re-insert battery (to make sure it is completely off)
2. Hold both volume up and down buttons
3. Plug into computer (while still holding the buttons down)
I'm gonna try this when I get home since alot of download sites are blocked here at work. I just tried your method to get into download mode and it at least I got the yellow triangle with the digging android. So far, so good. My next question really is more procedural. I am wondering where exactly the .pit and .tar files go and exactly what do I do with the drivers I downloaded? I apologize in advance if the thread contains this, but since I'm at work now, I can't really open more than a browser window or else the badnwidth police comiong storming into my office. Thanks in advance and I will post update later. Thanks again for your help so far, you've at least given me hope!!!!
Seems I'm able to get a few files to download. I have looked at the other forum posts, but my question is when I do get stock JFD, in what window of ODIN do I put it in? I am running ODIN3 v1.3. Also, I cannot get my phone to show up in a com window on ODIN either. I am using a USB hub, not sure if that's interfering or not.
Pit file goes in the PIT section, JFD tar file goes in PDA.
I would ditch the USB hub.
Have Odin opened before you put your phone into download mode. When it's in download mode Odin should recognize the phone. It'll recognize the COM port it's plugged into. If it doesn't you don't have the drivers installed properly or there's a problem with the USB connection. Try plugging it into other USB ports. Always remember to close Odin and pull your battery and start fresh if you are attempting to reconnect the phone to the computer.
OK i plugged into the back of the computer and ditched the hub. Got ODIN to recognize the device. Unfortunately I didn't load the .pit file as the first reply didn't mention it (not upset, not complaining, I should have known better). ODIN reads file analysis for over 10 minutes now. Not sure if I should unplug and restart the process with the .pit file or am I going to permanently brick the phone?
edit: unplugged and restarted process. Now the pit file will not come up in the ODIN screen when I search for it with the pit button.......I've tried every download I can, but it doesn't see the file. I've tried to extract it, but nothing happens. What am i doing wrong, beside being over my head?
Download the 512 pit file from here. It's compressed in RAR format so you will need to unRAR it. The pit file should end in .pit
When you click the PIT button in Odin it will allow you to browse to the *.pit file
Ok, now I'm back up to stock and it seems as though everything is working ok. Have a new problem trying to root. Will research and start a new thread if needed.
For the life of me I couldn't get the pit file to populate the ODIN box for the file. In the end I reverted to the original post and just dropped in the JFD. I did not click on repartition and left the pit file blank. Everything came back up fine without the pit file. I am trying to re-root the phone, but when I boot the update.zip file in recovery it says something about e:/sdcard/update.zip not being valid and I have to reboot..but everything comes back fine in stock. I am happy the phone is back, but I would love to re-root it and get back to where it was or maybe flash a 2.2 rom. Thanks again for all of your guys' help. Definitely saved me from being at T-Mo looking at a new phone......
You may have to put the root file back on. I have had to odin hundreds of times and sometimes the file on my cell somehow gets lost. Even of it still says it is there.

Try this update.zip file. It's from one of the early root methods for JFD.

That's because when you install ROM Manager, it replaces the root "Update.zip" with a ClockworkMod "Update.zip". So when Odin back to stock you need to replace the ClockworkMod "Update.zip" with the root "Update.zip".
Thanks again for the help. I am having a hard time even getting into recovery mode. Can't seem to get it right. Is this problem I'm having possibly related the fact that I didn't repartition the sd card? Just wondering. Also an earlier post said that I needed to replace the root update.zip instead of having the clockwork update.zip. How would I go about replacing this file? Getting closer to the end of the road.....

[Q] Soft bricked my friends vibrant:(

I apologize in advanced.
A friend handed me her vibrant and asked me to flash it so she could have the wi-fi hot spot ability.
I rooted it, then foolishly put one of the ROM's and now the phone is soft bricked... meaning I can get into recovery mode with the volume keys and power, but that's it.
I've tried to install a different rom from the external sdcard through recovery and it failed. (That is the only way I can get access a new update.zip file on the phone)
Can someone tell me exactly what to do to get a froyo rom on this phone working? I'd really really appreciate it.
P.S. I am on a mac, so I'm really looking for a solution that requires installing something from the external sd card. Is that even possible?

Well you can go back to stock with Odin and try again...but since you're on a Mac....i think the Odin alternate is called Heimdall or something
EDIT: Found it....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834195
I'm sure it works just like Odin.....get the files needed to go back to stock here

this is good loool when can we expect to see i bricked my moms friend friends moms her sons phone
I'm glad someone is getting a kick out of this. I just downloaded Heimdall. I need to reboot and see if this can fix the problem. More to come...
I have to download something called qt which is a gig. Sucking internet from my epic at work... not going to happen today.
Note to self: NO MORE FLASHING FOR FRIENDS.

Thats weird... I dont even think Odin is more then 1MB, find it hard to believe that the Mac's alternate is so big. If you can find any windows machine it would be very easy to direct you on how to get her phone back up and running.
QT, which seems to be an environment like Java, is nearly a gig, and is necessary to run Heimdall on my mac.
The instructions for Odin says...
1. Open Odin3_v1.0
2. Load .512 into the PIT placeholder
(In this case s1_odin_20100512)
3. Load *FILE.tar* into PDA placeholder
(In this case Eugene_2E_JK2_Froyo.tar.md5)
4. Make sure COM port has a number in it
This means your phone is connected, if your phone is not connected make sure you have the correct drivers)
5. Press Start!

Using the image I've attached of Heimdall, which PDA/Code should I load the .md5 file under?
Thank you Odin, thank you Samsung USB drivers (which I had to google to find) and thank you mom's PC. I got my friend's phone working, unfortunately all her contacts were on the phone and not synced to google, and I didn't back her up. Whoops. Why would T-mobile transfer numbers from a black berry to an Android phone and not have it sync with google?
Heimdall was a waste of time and memory. I'm sure the developers worked very hard on it, but it totally didn't work for my mac book pro complicating a tense situation.
Problem solved.

[Q] need help about firmwares

im new to android, very familer with flashing nokia phones but this seems a whole new ball game..
id like to root my galaxy s2 and also flash a generic firmware removing all the t mobile start screens and crap, maybe i could just do that with root access maybe?
anyway, im completly lost, ive read through loads of posts here, and im lost when XXWXW or what ever is mentioned, and im to download the in secure version.. here is what i got :>
wth?? wont let me post image hosted at imageshack, is just a screenshot of my about page on me phone..
wow, no way to post the image atall
i have to write all the versions and stuff tomrow, im going bed now.. would be easier if allow me to post a simple image lol..
any help on which firmware files i need would be great..
i got the odin flasher, just need to know what firmware i need, or what files i need to root my phone, as i dont see anything that matches to any official generic firmwares on here, neither can i find the insecure file i need..
thanx in advance
First of all, welcome to android, and like you I came from the world of symbian too. I must say, it can be a bit confusing, all these new terms to get used to but here we go, ill try and clear it up for you with just what applies to the sgs2 for simplicity.
First of all get Odin 1.85, which you said you got anyway.
Now, go to SamFirmware.com, sign up, then navigate to the android firmwares, select the sgs2 from the list, scroll down to XXKH3 (latest and in my opinion the best stock firmware), and download it.
You also need to find an app called superoneclick, I use v1.65, its not the latest, but always works for me, search the forumss or Google it, you should find it easily.
Once all is downloaded and extracted to a folder assumingly on your desktop your ready to go.
First off, switch your phone off and boot it into download mode by holding volume down, home button and power on. You should arrive on a black screen with some writing on and a yellow triangle. Press the up button once, you are now in download.
Connect your phone to PC, and let it install any drivers, I can't reneger at this point if I needed to provide specific drivers as it was a long time ago, but you may need to search for some or look for another "how to" if you have problems.
Start Odin, and without altering any checkboxes, press the PDA button and navigate to your folder where you unzipped/rar'd the firmware and select the one with "code" in the title. Then press phone and select the file with "modem" in the title. Lastly press csc and select one of the two files with "csc " in the title. Make sure you have the correct files and forget about the ones left for now. When sure, press "start".
When complete, your phone will restart and you should have a brand new copy of XXKH3 on your phone, which will now be wiped by the way, so back up and stuff you have first.
Now, you need to find the thread on here that provides "insecure kernels " download and flash any insecure kernel using the method described above except only using the "PDA" button, this step enables you to do the rooting bit next.
Once booted back up again, ensure that "USB debugging" is enabled, and open up and run superoneclick, just press the "root" button and let it do its thing. Reboot back into download mode.
Now, last step is to flash back the stock secure kernel. Start up Odin again, and press "PDA" then select the file with "kernel" in the name from the original download from SamFirmware. Flash it, and once rebooted, you now have stock latest unbranded firmware with root.
If your unclear about anything, ask and ill try and help, please do be careful, as is always the way with these things, you can brick it.
hi, thanx for reply
good to talk to an ex symbian user, i used to admin symbian freak forum lol, think i still might have the highest post count lol, anyway, symbian is a dead os, but was much simpler to debrand and flash, specially when nokia brought out there online update tool, was just a case of changing product code to debrand,, before that i used jaf, still got my jaf flasher somewhere, and pkey..
anyway, back on topic. im still a little lost.. ive signed up at samfirmware but cant find any XXKH3, is this the one i need :>

ok well if u sscroll down or press ctrl + f and type xxkh3 it will take u there .. but i am also guna update my firmware for first time and heres the link for firmware in case.

Yes, that's the one, the file named I9100XXKH3, it'll most likely be zipped or rar'd. When you extract it it will be several tar.md5 files
I used to spend ages on symbian freak, I must say I think android is easier, only pain is you need different binaries for windows for all different oem's that run android to flash. It can get complicated if you flit from one brand to another like I do a lot.
It's a shame symbian didn't keep up, as I liked it, very functional, just cumbersome to use. Although I must say that belle looks nice, although very Android like.
Just go to this thread for firmwares and guide on how to flash the device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278

How to flash: Read the instructions that you find on various threads carefully! take your time, don't jump into it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVwiiSStuSQ
In case you mess up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvdC2Exxm0M
This guide here shows how to install clockwork mod on your device:
http://www.inspiredgeek.com/2011/06...cwm-recovery-for-samsung-galaxy-s2-ii-how-to/
And these instructions tell you how to install via Clockworkmod:
BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!
Download the rom zip (don’t rename it!)
Put the downloaded zip file on your internal sdcard
Reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery (don’t do this from rom manager, it won’t work)
Select Install zip from sdcard
Select Browse for zip on sdcard
Select the zip file you put on your sdcard above
(Let if flash)
Reboot, Enjoy!
yea, nokia made mistake with symbian.. it was a great os back in the day when it was open, like 2nd edition symbian where all system files could be accessed, then if i remember correctly the n80 was the first 3rd edition symbian device, which had a whole load of stupid security features stopping us power users / modders having access to system files.. this was the downfall of symbian i belive, but it was hacked eventually, but then the touch screen revoloution came about, and symbian just simply isnt an os that is usable on a touch only input device, like 5800 for example..
the whole theme that originated symbian to how it was, was the fact it could be very easily used in one hand, but touch screens killed that, and they tried to addapt but failed misserably imo.. now i hear nokia are going with windows 7 mobile, i dont know why they dont use android, well i do, cus its based on linux and easiliy hackable and moddable which for some reason nokia hates.. not sure what happened with the meegoo, or meamo os on the n900, i gave up on nokia after the 5800 and n8.. 5800 was a total failure, worst phone ive ever had, the n8 wasnt so bad, but so sluggish annd everything was so long winded, like simple tasks like changing ring tones had to go through 9000 menu pages, but thats symbian for you lol.. the camera on the n8 i still belive the best camera on any phone to date, just a shame the os the phone has..
one final question before i flash.. whats differnce beetween

So I need the one that wipes right? Id like a fresh install. completely fresh debranded firmware with nothing else. all my contacts and calendar are most important to me but there all on my Google account.
thanx for help. just need to be tottaly sure before I flash.
Also. I have bricked several Nokia symbian devices in my time. but was able to do a dead flash via usb. or if this failed then I would have to dead flash the device using jaf with fbus cable. now if something did go wrong and brick my s2 is it possible to revive via a usb dead flash as I don't have fbus cable for this device or know if such a thing even exists. I've been out the phone modding game for a long long time due to illness. still in recovery now. just wonder what options I have if something was bad to happen. as we all know flashing any device has some amount of risk.
thanx again guys. much appreciate the prompt replies.
Marty
One thing to be wary of, that is a certain death situation if you lose it, is to back up your /efs folder. It contains important information such as imei and more. Flashing normally doesn't touch that folder but it has been heard of for it to go corrupt when flashing. It's rare, but can happen. I have flashed mine dozens of times with no ill effects. There are instructions on this forum of how to do it, unfortunately I think you have to be rooted first in order to do it.

Yes, it will be a fresh install.
You can also wipe it manually by booting in recovery mode (vol. up + home + power).
Cool. so there is a Rom (read only memory) partition that can't be access only via recovery mode? and if something was to go wrong you can always boot into recovery mode and re install the stock factory firmware? if something was to go wrong. am I understanding you correctly? bit like the recovery options from a windows pc for example.
or am I completely off key here lol.
another quick question is about sp lock. I pretty sure my sgs2 is locked to t-mobile and if anything like symbian devices flashing firmware does nothing to the sp lock. is this the same with android devices. or more specifically the sgs2? I remember the Nokia bb5 phones was unlockable for many many years. as Im sure some of you remember the great dejan keljavic found a way to unlock bb5. that was years ago so Im guessing there is most likely even stronger algorithms for sp unlock? But that was Nokia and this is Samsung. so is sp unlock a possibility? not that its super important to me as Im on contract anyway but is nice to know if possible. is pointless Google unlock sgs2 as every website in the world claim they can do it via calculating code from imei lol. which are all scams.
thanx again for helping a droid noob lol. anything anyone need to know about symbian Im happy to help. more so on 2nd. 3rd and 5th edition symbian os. not so much on symbian^3 but still got n8 which runs this os so happy to help if an occasion should arise. which is doughtfull as I think android is the future.
Marty
You use CWM to create a nandroid backup, then anytime you want to restore your default system, just restore it.
To flash .tar files you use Odin for Windows.
Actually its very simple, there is an app you can download from the market that will find the code for you, called sgs2 unlock. You do need root first tho.
hello again, still havent got round to messing around with my phone yet lol.. but im going to do it tomroow, i know some time has passed now, and im currently downloading I9100XWKK5 from samfirmware as its 2.3.6.. making the latest stock unbranded firmware for my device right?
thanx again guys
marty
can anyone confirm before i flash
I can tell you that mine is on XXKK5 in the UK, bought from phones4u about a week ago. Never modified in any way.

XXKK5 is that not a branded firmware? cant find it on samfirmware at all..
also, could i download a 4.0.3 android version and flash it to my sgs2? I9100XXLP6 for example??
Nope, generic unlocked.
Edit: Just noticed I was being a complete plum and looking at the baseband version, you are correct, XXKKA. Apologies.

[Q] Galaxy s2 data recovery when panic upload screen

Greetings,
My son has a Galaxy s2 running stock 2.3 which he bought in Singapore over a year ago, I think. He states that it has not been rooted. Over the last several weeks he has been getting the 'kernal panic upload mode' screen when the battery was getting low. Last week it became permenant regardless of the battery level. Yesterday I was able to talk him through entering recovery mode. He wiped the partition cache and rebooted with no apparent effect. A picture of the recovery mode screen idicates that the system was unable to mount /data (unknown error: 0). But it did show media files were copied succesfully. ... I've attached a picture of the screen. The phone is no longer recognized in Win7.
My basic question. How might we rescue the pictures and some text from the phone before redoing the os?
TIA,
Kim
Kim, flash siyah v5 and try cwm.
Also drill your son on what is that he did exactly, cause he must have done something.
Sent from the little guy
I had thought that if all else failed I would have him use Odin to re-apply his existing os. My thinking was that the file and partition structure would be close enough to what's there to allow normal usb connection and to d/l his pics and what not. Then I'd get him to install something with a little more support for recovery and snooping about. Decent enhancements!!
I don't know what he did other than I think he might have overloaded the little beast with too many apps constantly calling home on an older os. But, that's just a guess. Thanks for the upgrade suggestions. I'm only starting to research that aspect. I suspect that going direct to the better burns will be the way we'll end up going.
Be well,
Kim
Siyah is a custom kernel, no danger regarding existing data.
By flashing it you'll be able to access a temp recovery called clockwork mode.

Greetings gastonw,
My son's getting the usb drivers from the Samsung site for the i9100. I found the tar Siyah-s2-v5.0.1.tar for Odin.
Odin3 version is 3.04. Don't know what else I need.
I'm going to be doing this long distance and I've not handled a smart phone personally so ...
1. Start the phone in download mode.
2. Connect phone to computer
3. Start Odin (making sure that Kies is not running), Odin should recognize the phone.
4. Load the tar in the pda section
5. check automatic reboot, and start.
6. I presume that I will know when it's done because odin will report success or finished, and the phone will boot.
To grab the data off this phone do we use the recovery mode or will it now be called clockwork mode?
At which point I presume we shut the phone down and do a normal start/boot.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks for your help. Reading the specs on the Siya work I'm almost tempted
to go get a phone for myself.
Be well,
Kim
Lol, that's awesome, your playing by the book
Custom recovery will become CWM instead of stock recovery.
And go ahead and get yourself a new phone, you're in for a hell of a ride.

Thank!! My son called and said the usb still doesn't work. Hum .... I hope not, but I may be back to see if there's a way to transfer something from an sd card in order to save the data. On the flip side ...
Kim
Odin doesn't see his device or the pc calls it "unknown device"?
Can he get it to boot, he can use airdroid app or dropbox to transfer over wifi.
The custom kernel is just to get rid of that pabic message.

Mornin' gastonw,
Well, as of a couple of minutes ago, win7 did not recognize the phone. Hopefully with a reinstallation of the Samsung specific usb drivers win7 and/or Odin will recognize the phone.
Interesting. When he booted into download mode the top of the screen said something like, 'Odin download mode'. Does this indicate that it might be rooted? To the best of my knowledge he was unaware of the three button boot loader mode and hence would not have changed the phone from the basic generic non-branded phone that he bought. Just wondering. If it is rooted is there a way to manually do, via the recovery mode, what Odin will be doing? It seems to me that if recovery allows to d/l from the sd card there must be a destination to be designated. I have no idea what the drive and directory layout is, and I'm a tad rusty on linix shell commands, don't even know what shell android uses. But, if I knew where the package had to go ... .
I'll write again when I know more.
Thanks again,
Kim
Well the last I heard is that no USB *and* it's probably a win7 problem!!!! Good golly miss molly!
Anyway, snooping about I found a thread [howto] which indicated that putting a clock work mod zip on an sd and d/ling it thru the recovery mode would install the clock work mod recovery boot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1814801
Now I can not find a further reference to a zip with the name format used in this post. However at the modclockwork site I do find two
http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager. One is for 'touch'. I don't know the difference between the two. But, am I understanding correctly that I can put the appropriate zip on an sd from which I can d/l thru the standard recovery mode which on restart I presume will give me access to cmw recovery mode? Seems to easy. LOL!!!
Any help would be appreciated.
Kim
This is how you root & flash cwm via recovery: http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=7psIQU69h3M&desktop_uri=/watch?v=7psIQU69h3M&gl=MX
Tell him to try another PC to see if it sees the device.
Genuine s2 usb I assume?

[Q] p769 - softbricked by noob

i finally figured out how to get CWM installed and working, after a couple of months of fighting with it, off and on. so, i guessed that meant i have my bootloader unlocked - "wrong!".
i deleted some thing that wasn't supposed to be deleted, then the damned cell network and lan network stopped working (keeps saying com.android.phone has stopped). so i was going to put cyanogenmod on it, because i thought that i could, and just be done with the whole "missing apps" crap. it turns out "just because you CAN put CM on it doesn't mean you CAN put CM on it". i bricked it. i have NO options to "load" or "flash" or "boot" any thing when the phone is booting up. i would love some clarification as to what i CAN do from here.
i would rather install CM and be done with all of this, but i'll take any advice that gets rid of the problem. the biggest problem is understanding how to put CM on your phone, or to do any thing at all like that, when you cant get into any kind of recovery / boot menu, even though you ARE rooted... i don't care if i have to install cyanogenmod or some one else's CWM backup, i just don't know HOW to do it - especially with no windows (only linux). it's a rooted p769v20d (originally p769v10g).
thanks

i was going to try some stuff mentioned in other threads, but i don't have access to a windows computer - and i don't think i need to root my phone again any way, considering it is still rooted.

fwiw, regarding the mysterious deleted app:
i lose my internet signal as soon as it says "com.android.phone has stopped", then i get it back again right before it says that message again - it ALSO shows a cell-phone signal right before that message. this repeats over and over and over every few seconds - aggravating as hell...
here's the apps that i still have installed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45774770

Nice thread title. That is how I am feeling right now with this phone. I feel like calling tech care and yell at them for a bit to vent. Anyway, why not install fastboot for Linux and flash the ics u and x? I uploaded my u and x folder in the Unlock Bootloader for Noobs thread. Then, flash the 20h.....oh, dang.... sorry. Forgot.... no Windows. Maybe do the built-in restore by holding the volume down, home and power keys?

thanks, but i think i finally got it working. i never knew, after all this time, that after you do the l9recoveryinstaller, at the reboot, there are no cues to tell when when to hit some buttons, and it's not clear what buttons to hit. here's what i did, and, so far, its progress:
1: be rooted
2: install busy box, completely
3: install l9recoveryinstaller
4: reboot
5: after you see the LG logo, hold vol-down until you see the flashing lights (i thought you see the flashing lights and THEN you hit vol-down, but i was wrong).
still fighting to get a rooted rom installed ...
if i choose "install zip from external sdcard" is says:
"finding update ... opening update ... installing update ...installation aborted".
if i choose "restore" instead of "install" it will not let me select any thing, it just keeps saying file not found, when i try to select any further options, whether "restore" or "restore from external sdcard" or "advanced restore from external sdcard". and i already checked to make sure the sdcard was mounted...

I think your phone bootloader is locked, you cannot flash any custom rom zip file. It will soft brick your phone.
Please restore P769 CWM back from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136204. Download backup file and unbzip it. Put extract files in your sdcard /clockworkmod/backup/2013-08-30.12.00.00 folder. Extract file should contain several .img, .tar, .a, .log and .md5

i don't have a windows computer. looks like i'm out a 350$ phone. lesson learned. never will cease to be amazed that so many mobile hackers are using windows... seems like they would be linux users too... that would be awesome, because then there are likely to be linux tools to do this with... and i don't have a windows img to load into a virtual machine... lucky lucky lucky...

Well correct me if I am wrong, but I guess you "only" deleted some system files, right? Do you remember which ones were the ones? Or at least the folder they were in? Then you only need to extract that stuff from a kdz/ the bin file and push them on your phone using adb or maybe even the dd command.
Maybe if someone is kind enough, he ll probably provide you with the files you need. And cmiiw, but I guess you deleted stuff from /system/app...

Lol, you are a Linux user, you should know how to get your hands on a windows.iso
However, i would recommend using a portable windows xp (bootable usb)
VR is not the best option IMO
You will need this program http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
&
Sorry I can't provide a link to the iso but do a google search for

It's depend on what method you use. You can flash kdz using offline method here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2085344
or use LG mobile support tools from LG website. If you choose this you don't need to download any kdz. It'll download kdz automatically from LG server then flash it on your phone. It take about an hour or two.

thats awesome - i wonder if i can get by with using that on wine on linux, instead of borrowing a windows computer... i'm gonna try it...
well, the verdict is in, on this one: i'm screwed. i've tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried, and i can NOT flash this damned phone. it's BRICKED.
i borrowed / hijacked my brother's computer (windows7), all day. i tried a few different things - i even tried the same way i flashed it to update it ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2356536 ), which was worthless to unbrick it.
the problem in every case was that every time the damned flasher got so far along it would "lose the connection to the phone". drivers installed, etc, etc, no difference. i suspect its because i couldnt connect it in all the various modes (mtp ptp etc), since the ONLY way it would connect is in "software upgrade mode".
i had to buy another phone, won't have it till tuesday. lesson learned: NEVER buy a phone that didn't come from samsung... you just can't do what you want with them, without a lot of time, patience, experience, and a windows computer.
thanks for all the help.

Did you try to recover your phone with LG mobile support tool. It can reinstall rom in almost any soft-brick case. Please try it if you haven't try it yet. Many people restore their phone by that software. The steps are
- Download LG mobile support tool from LG web site
- Boot you phone to S/W update mode
- Run Tool and select recover phone
- Wait about 1-2 hours to download and flash
If it's not hardware problem, this should solve your problem

i never found that on their website, and i looked quite a few times. however, i noticed when i used the b2clientsetup.exe that if i run it without running the shttp server first, that it downloads a support tool from the net, which does not work - keeps saying phone lost connection. not sure if its the same tool.

Yes that tool. In my region, it has download link but for P769 it has request repair service.
Download from http://tool.xcdn.gdms.lge.com/client/app/B2CAppSetup.exe
You must remove following lines from hosts file
127.0.0.1 csmg.lgmobile.com
127.0.0.1 csmgdl.lgmobile.com

yeah, that's exactly what i did, but it would keep "losing the connection to the phone". not sure why, but i suspect it was a driver issue - and i installed the latest drivers, which made no difference. i also went back and installed older drivers, which made no difference. i must just be lucky as hell, or some thing .

In my country (RO) there are some GSM Repair Centers. You should not give up and you should go to them. Par example, I flashed an HTC Mozart when the battery was dead and I bricked it (idiot, I know). I went to a shop like the ones mentioned above and I think he said that he has to flash the phone using a JTAG or something like that (I know that he has to open the phone to reach it's motherboard, solder some **** out there and... flash I guess). The whole thing was about ~20E. Anyway, keep digging, maybe you'll eventually find something that works for you. If not, go to someone who can "force flash" it and maybe you can save the device.
