[Q] need help about firmwares - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

im new to android, very familer with flashing nokia phones but this seems a whole new ball game..
id like to root my galaxy s2 and also flash a generic firmware removing all the t mobile start screens and crap, maybe i could just do that with root access maybe?
anyway, im completly lost, ive read through loads of posts here, and im lost when XXWXW or what ever is mentioned, and im to download the in secure version.. here is what i got :>
wth?? wont let me post image hosted at imageshack, is just a screenshot of my about page on me phone..
wow, no way to post the image atall
i have to write all the versions and stuff tomrow, im going bed now.. would be easier if allow me to post a simple image lol..
any help on which firmware files i need would be great..
i got the odin flasher, just need to know what firmware i need, or what files i need to root my phone, as i dont see anything that matches to any official generic firmwares on here, neither can i find the insecure file i need..
thanx in advance

First of all, welcome to android, and like you I came from the world of symbian too. I must say, it can be a bit confusing, all these new terms to get used to but here we go, ill try and clear it up for you with just what applies to the sgs2 for simplicity.
First of all get Odin 1.85, which you said you got anyway.
Now, go to SamFirmware.com, sign up, then navigate to the android firmwares, select the sgs2 from the list, scroll down to XXKH3 (latest and in my opinion the best stock firmware), and download it.
You also need to find an app called superoneclick, I use v1.65, its not the latest, but always works for me, search the forumss or Google it, you should find it easily.
Once all is downloaded and extracted to a folder assumingly on your desktop your ready to go.
First off, switch your phone off and boot it into download mode by holding volume down, home button and power on. You should arrive on a black screen with some writing on and a yellow triangle. Press the up button once, you are now in download.
Connect your phone to PC, and let it install any drivers, I can't reneger at this point if I needed to provide specific drivers as it was a long time ago, but you may need to search for some or look for another "how to" if you have problems.
Start Odin, and without altering any checkboxes, press the PDA button and navigate to your folder where you unzipped/rar'd the firmware and select the one with "code" in the title. Then press phone and select the file with "modem" in the title. Lastly press csc and select one of the two files with "csc " in the title. Make sure you have the correct files and forget about the ones left for now. When sure, press "start".
When complete, your phone will restart and you should have a brand new copy of XXKH3 on your phone, which will now be wiped by the way, so back up and stuff you have first.
Now, you need to find the thread on here that provides "insecure kernels " download and flash any insecure kernel using the method described above except only using the "PDA" button, this step enables you to do the rooting bit next.
Once booted back up again, ensure that "USB debugging" is enabled, and open up and run superoneclick, just press the "root" button and let it do its thing. Reboot back into download mode.
Now, last step is to flash back the stock secure kernel. Start up Odin again, and press "PDA" then select the file with "kernel" in the name from the original download from SamFirmware. Flash it, and once rebooted, you now have stock latest unbranded firmware with root.
If your unclear about anything, ask and ill try and help, please do be careful, as is always the way with these things, you can brick it.

hi, thanx for reply
good to talk to an ex symbian user, i used to admin symbian freak forum lol, think i still might have the highest post count lol, anyway, symbian is a dead os, but was much simpler to debrand and flash, specially when nokia brought out there online update tool, was just a case of changing product code to debrand,, before that i used jaf, still got my jaf flasher somewhere, and pkey..
anyway, back on topic. im still a little lost.. ive signed up at samfirmware but cant find any XXKH3, is this the one i need :>

is it the .pit file?
"Galaxy S II */*.PIT File:*DOWNLOAD (EXT4)"

ok well if u sscroll down or press ctrl + f and type xxkh3 it will take u there .. but i am also guna update my firmware for first time and heres the link for firmware in case.
hotfile.co m/dl/127188601/47c712c/I9100XXKH3.rar.html << as i am new member it would let me put link properly

Yes, that's the one, the file named I9100XXKH3, it'll most likely be zipped or rar'd. When you extract it it will be several tar.md5 files
I used to spend ages on symbian freak, I must say I think android is easier, only pain is you need different binaries for windows for all different oem's that run android to flash. It can get complicated if you flit from one brand to another like I do a lot.
It's a shame symbian didn't keep up, as I liked it, very functional, just cumbersome to use. Although I must say that belle looks nice, although very Android like.

Just go to this thread for firmwares and guide on how to flash the device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278

How to flash: Read the instructions that you find on various threads carefully! take your time, don't jump into it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVwiiSStuSQ
In case you mess up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvdC2Exxm0M
This guide here shows how to install clockwork mod on your device:
http://www.inspiredgeek.com/2011/06...cwm-recovery-for-samsung-galaxy-s2-ii-how-to/
And these instructions tell you how to install via Clockworkmod:
BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!
Download the rom zip (don’t rename it!)
Put the downloaded zip file on your internal sdcard
Reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery (don’t do this from rom manager, it won’t work)
Select Install zip from sdcard
Select Browse for zip on sdcard
Select the zip file you put on your sdcard above
(Let if flash)
Reboot, Enjoy!

yea, nokia made mistake with symbian.. it was a great os back in the day when it was open, like 2nd edition symbian where all system files could be accessed, then if i remember correctly the n80 was the first 3rd edition symbian device, which had a whole load of stupid security features stopping us power users / modders having access to system files.. this was the downfall of symbian i belive, but it was hacked eventually, but then the touch screen revoloution came about, and symbian just simply isnt an os that is usable on a touch only input device, like 5800 for example..
the whole theme that originated symbian to how it was, was the fact it could be very easily used in one hand, but touch screens killed that, and they tried to addapt but failed misserably imo.. now i hear nokia are going with windows 7 mobile, i dont know why they dont use android, well i do, cus its based on linux and easiliy hackable and moddable which for some reason nokia hates.. not sure what happened with the meegoo, or meamo os on the n900, i gave up on nokia after the 5800 and n8.. 5800 was a total failure, worst phone ive ever had, the n8 wasnt so bad, but so sluggish annd everything was so long winded, like simple tasks like changing ring tones had to go through 9000 menu pages, but thats symbian for you lol.. the camera on the n8 i still belive the best camera on any phone to date, just a shame the os the phone has..
one final question before i flash.. whats differnce beetween

So I need the one that wipes right? Id like a fresh install. completely fresh debranded firmware with nothing else. all my contacts and calendar are most important to me but there all on my Google account.
thanx for help. just need to be tottaly sure before I flash.
Also. I have bricked several Nokia symbian devices in my time. but was able to do a dead flash via usb. or if this failed then I would have to dead flash the device using jaf with fbus cable. now if something did go wrong and brick my s2 is it possible to revive via a usb dead flash as I don't have fbus cable for this device or know if such a thing even exists. I've been out the phone modding game for a long long time due to illness. still in recovery now. just wonder what options I have if something was bad to happen. as we all know flashing any device has some amount of risk.
thanx again guys. much appreciate the prompt replies.
Marty

One thing to be wary of, that is a certain death situation if you lose it, is to back up your /efs folder. It contains important information such as imei and more. Flashing normally doesn't touch that folder but it has been heard of for it to go corrupt when flashing. It's rare, but can happen. I have flashed mine dozens of times with no ill effects. There are instructions on this forum of how to do it, unfortunately I think you have to be rooted first in order to do it.

Yes, it will be a fresh install.
You can also wipe it manually by booting in recovery mode (vol. up + home + power).

Cool. so there is a Rom (read only memory) partition that can't be access only via recovery mode? and if something was to go wrong you can always boot into recovery mode and re install the stock factory firmware? if something was to go wrong. am I understanding you correctly? bit like the recovery options from a windows pc for example.
or am I completely off key here lol.
another quick question is about sp lock. I pretty sure my sgs2 is locked to t-mobile and if anything like symbian devices flashing firmware does nothing to the sp lock. is this the same with android devices. or more specifically the sgs2? I remember the Nokia bb5 phones was unlockable for many many years. as Im sure some of you remember the great dejan keljavic found a way to unlock bb5. that was years ago so Im guessing there is most likely even stronger algorithms for sp unlock? But that was Nokia and this is Samsung. so is sp unlock a possibility? not that its super important to me as Im on contract anyway but is nice to know if possible. is pointless Google unlock sgs2 as every website in the world claim they can do it via calculating code from imei lol. which are all scams.
thanx again for helping a droid noob lol. anything anyone need to know about symbian Im happy to help. more so on 2nd. 3rd and 5th edition symbian os. not so much on symbian^3 but still got n8 which runs this os so happy to help if an occasion should arise. which is doughtfull as I think android is the future.
Marty

You use CWM to create a nandroid backup, then anytime you want to restore your default system, just restore it.
To flash .tar files you use Odin for Windows.

Actually its very simple, there is an app you can download from the market that will find the code for you, called sgs2 unlock. You do need root first tho.

hello again, still havent got round to messing around with my phone yet lol.. but im going to do it tomroow, i know some time has passed now, and im currently downloading I9100XWKK5 from samfirmware as its 2.3.6.. making the latest stock unbranded firmware for my device right?
thanx again guys
marty

can anyone confirm before i flash

I can tell you that mine is on XXKK5 in the UK, bought from phones4u about a week ago. Never modified in any way.

XXKK5 is that not a branded firmware? cant find it on samfirmware at all..
also, could i download a 4.0.3 android version and flash it to my sgs2? I9100XXLP6 for example??

Nope, generic unlocked.
Edit: Just noticed I was being a complete plum and looking at the baseband version, you are correct, XXKKA. Apologies.

ROM/FIRMWARE Upgrade

Ok I'm sorry i feel i might get flamed for making this post. I have tried to understand this process but am unable to. What are the best Firmwares out there? the custom rom? what does decrypted rom mean exactly? and am i able to put the Custom rom on a x10a?
I have read a round, but it seems the threads are very sloppy due to people posting some dumb remarks. Any how i found it to be quite confusing. I am also unable to find omnious.
Thank you to all the devs. I have been following these forums for around 4 weeks, keeping quite and out of the way |
Thank You again,
Brock
you can now flash through
1.
SEUS and change rom/debrand phone
those rom are in specific SEUS format
2.
you can flash decrypted rom using our flash tool
(decrypted toms are extracted from seus and you can dump them using android tools)
3.
we have custom roms ready but you will not be able to flash them untill root is available
how to check?
I search many times but cannot find any clear answer.
How do I check/know my x10 is branded/debranded/unbranded?
Pls help me getting a simple clear answer!
Thank you all

an branded phone is usualy sold by phone carriers
they add customisation and junk apps to those phones
an generic phone has only the junk from SE
it does not have anything to do with network lock
I found omnious, but it only recognizes my x10 for the first 2 - 3 min then it doesnt anymore, i have tried the battery pull, holding the back button.
i have registered at both locations.
I am installing the rom with no SE apps, is it possible on a X10a, or do i need to rebrand my phone to X10i.
You say the decrpted roms allow dumping does that mean faster performance?
Are any of those roms the new smaller update? i have read around DoCoMo has gooten the update already.
Thank You

1. Have your x10i screen in lock mode and lit up..
2. Enter Menu Back Back Menu Back Menu Menu Back
3. Click Service Info
4. Click Model Info
5. Under the heading Brand you will find whether it is branded by your carrier.
I.E if it says Orange then it means its branded by Orange, etc

If you install the custom rom you will no doubt brick your phone!
The custom rom(s) are for Root for when it comes.
As for your earlier problem i think you may have to activate your account via an activation email, check your spam folders etc. If that isnt the case then the most likely problem is that you are trying to flash a custom rom!
Ok, first off i would like to thank everyone for quick responses.
I havent even been able to get to the flashing because it ownt recognize my phone. I have uninstalled PC Campanion not to sure what SEUS is, I am logged into Omnious, its sees my phone while i am holdibng the back button then the SE shows up on my X10 and bom no devices connected.
Which rom is best for me to flash my phone with. I have seen post of people saying getting better reception. Are any of those roms the smaller update that is due next week?
I am getting fustrated lol, I am by no means a Dev but i am tech smart somewhat and am trying to learn as i enjoy this tyoe of thing
Thanks

Ok.. remove your battery from your phone and wait atleast 5-10secs and whilst waiting press and hold the power button for atleast 3-5secs.
1. When ready insert the usb cable into your phone, only the phone end and
2. fire up omnius and make sure you have your username/password entered in settings.
3. Select x10 from the drop down list of handsets
4. Click on flash and select the App/Sw for the 1st entry (approx 16Mb) and FSP Customised file for the second entry (approx 112Mb)
5. Hit OK and hold down the back button on your x10i and at the same time insert the USB cable into your PC/Laptop
The most current ROM is R1FB001.
Hope that helps.

[Q] Soft bricked my friends vibrant:(

I apologize in advanced.
A friend handed me her vibrant and asked me to flash it so she could have the wi-fi hot spot ability.
I rooted it, then foolishly put one of the ROM's and now the phone is soft bricked... meaning I can get into recovery mode with the volume keys and power, but that's it.
I've tried to install a different rom from the external sdcard through recovery and it failed. (That is the only way I can get access a new update.zip file on the phone)
Can someone tell me exactly what to do to get a froyo rom on this phone working? I'd really really appreciate it.
P.S. I am on a mac, so I'm really looking for a solution that requires installing something from the external sd card. Is that even possible?

Well you can go back to stock with Odin and try again...but since you're on a Mac....i think the Odin alternate is called Heimdall or something
EDIT: Found it....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834195
I'm sure it works just like Odin.....get the files needed to go back to stock here

I'm glad someone is getting a kick out of this. I just downloaded Heimdall. I need to reboot and see if this can fix the problem. More to come...
I have to download something called qt which is a gig. Sucking internet from my epic at work... not going to happen today.
Note to self: NO MORE FLASHING FOR FRIENDS.

Thats weird... I dont even think Odin is more then 1MB, find it hard to believe that the Mac's alternate is so big. If you can find any windows machine it would be very easy to direct you on how to get her phone back up and running.
QT, which seems to be an environment like Java, is nearly a gig, and is necessary to run Heimdall on my mac.
The instructions for Odin says...
1. Open Odin3_v1.0
2. Load .512 into the PIT placeholder
(In this case s1_odin_20100512)
3. Load *FILE.tar* into PDA placeholder
(In this case Eugene_2E_JK2_Froyo.tar.md5)
4. Make sure COM port has a number in it
This means your phone is connected, if your phone is not connected make sure you have the correct drivers)
5. Press Start!

Using the image I've attached of Heimdall, which PDA/Code should I load the .md5 file under?
Thank you Odin, thank you Samsung USB drivers (which I had to google to find) and thank you mom's PC. I got my friend's phone working, unfortunately all her contacts were on the phone and not synced to google, and I didn't back her up. Whoops. Why would T-mobile transfer numbers from a black berry to an Android phone and not have it sync with google?
Heimdall was a waste of time and memory. I'm sure the developers worked very hard on it, but it totally didn't work for my mac book pro complicating a tense situation.
Problem solved.

[Q] Windows 7 will not pick up SGSII in USB Debugging Mode (Will not root as well)

I just bought my new Galaxy SII for a penny. Great deal, and spectacular phone. Happens to be my first android phone as well (been waiting for one for years). The only problem i am having is when I put the phone in USB debugging the computer won't pick it up in explorer. If I enable USB mode I can copy files, but I cannot root (Trying the Xperia X10 Easy Rooting Toolkit, spits out crap about "cannot find the path specified", no matter what I do). Kies also seems to not work with the phone... I have tried both my Self Built Windows 7 HP 64 Bit Desktop and Windows 7 HP 32 Bit netbook and both have the same problem. Windows Devices and Printers reads the device but says that the driver has not been installed, when in fact it has...
Any and all help to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Haha thanks, got it working. Rooted and everything, sorta excited-kid in a candy store .
OK. So if you couldn't tell, I'm a complete newb with android, wanted it for forever, but circumstances didn't allow me to until now, and now I feel a little over my head. Sooo:
1.) Could you (or someone) maybe post links to some threads or sites that would be good to ease me into the world of android?
2.) With my Samsung Galaxy SII, if I am installing ROM's and taking them off, and installing new ones, what are the chances of bricking my device?
3.) Since I rooted it, I went over to CyanogenMod and downloaded the ZIP to the latest stable ROM. I then dropped it into my SD card, and went into a app I downloaded called ROM Manager. When I went to install from SD card, and it rebooted, it gave me an error and popped back out, seemed like I did it wrong. So how do I install ROM's (CM7 in particular).
4.) How would I go about removing that ROM after its been installed and im tired of it ?
I hate feeling like a newb, and would be very thankful for any help people would be willing to give to get me started!
Ok, two more questions .
1.) Is there a good app to backup my current apps before doing a wipe(I have a ton of them...)?
2.) I read that ROM's cannot include google apps, so how would I get them on? Would I download the APK and then sideload them?
Thanks again!
The ROMs that I downloaded were all in ZIP folders and I couldn't figure out what I should link to odin as ZIP folders aren't compatable to flash . And then my phone wont reboot into recovery or download mode (can't remember which one I need to be in for Odin). I tried with debugging on and off and it just boots right back into android. This is very frustrating, as I know I must be doing something wrong...
Thanks for all your help

Wow you need to slow before you do something stupid. Take the time to read and just as important, if not more important, take the time to search the internet for your questions.
Learning what steps needed to do something to your phone is not the goal. Learning what you are doing and why, should be the goal, and learning how to do each step is a sidepoint that you learn as a by-product.
Most important thing to learn why and how to check for is to make sure what you're flashing does not contain bootloaders. If you mess with bootloaders and the smallest thing goes wrong, you end up owning an extremely expensive paper weight, i.e. a brick.
In general flashing what the majority flash here on xda is safe. But that's not a guarantee as any garbage can be uploaded. So read the entire thread. Some are long. If you can't be bothered to read the longer ones, at the minimum use the search tool to look for particular words to your question. Search before you post. It will be evident by what you ask that you've spent the time researching, and will attract a higher level of help.
I'm not trying to be mean or come down on you. You're already starting to do what's right by asking when you're not sure.
A NOTE TO YOU AND EVERY NOOB ON XDA:
One of the biggest reasons people's questions receive no response for a day or more, is because their question could be easily solved by using the search tool in xda or one google search.
In the wise words of tom cruise, "Help me, help you. Help me, help you!"
And yeah, he can fly.

Yea. I goofed and I flashed an international ROM onto it. I was able to find a unrooted stack tar to flash. I plan to do a lot of reading before I do this again . If anyone has any ideas on where to start that would be great.
And no problem, I understand as I am a heavy user of tomshardware forums. It frustrates me when people ask for advice a two second search would pull up.
Again thanks everyone! XDA is awesome!

[Q] Unroot - Recovery Mode- Download mode

Ok
Trying to Unroot.
But today I have this giantic issue.
My recovery mode just doesnt appear anything like before.
I have tried unrooting using a Root_Remover.zip file. But I can't find at all the "install zip" menu in recovery mode I had when I had to root it first ! Now it just wont appear at all. I only have :
Reboot system Now
Apply update from external Storage
Wipe Data/Factory REset
Wipe Cache Partition
and nothing more. I even tried the second menu (apply update from ext.stor.) but im not using any external storage.
I thought "all right, Ill get through it with ODIN >>> WRONG !!!!!! No download mode ...
So right now I'm completely screwed since theres no way I can perform an unroot under such conditions.
Please someone help me out with this, sorry for being a bit too straightfoward but after 72h spent on that @#%? I find it pretty unrelevant that this ****ing menu wont show the hell up. Even though I guess Im just doing something wrong, I need help.
EDIT : All right. So I figured out most tutorials are written by incompetent people whom mostly release pseudo tutorials that are just here to show the world that they can perform this or that, but in fact, can't take a single second to make a point where you don't get access to DOWNLOAD MODE the same way on a Tab2 than with a S2 -_-. We don't enter DOWNLOAD mode the same way ... geez ... so I figured out that using the Up volume button instead of the down volume button would eventually get me there. Which it did. Come on ... how is it possible that after 15 tutorials, not ONE did mention that ?
Also, ODIN doesn't want to do @#%? right now. I browsed the right firmware, plugged my tab to my laptop ... hit START and it ends in 5 seconds after "all thread completed (0 succeed/0 failed)
I've tried multiple stock firmwares (all the same but form different locations or mirrors) and ... nothing. So ...
First, please clarify these couple of questions. What device do you have? What version of recovery do you have? And one more out of curiosity. Where did you get that root remover zip?

Most of the tutorials are written for the GT-P75xx. Being that it's also the device for the section you posted this rant in, I can see why the tutorials were not what you needed. Just my two cents but condemning the authors of the tutorials will most likely get you very little help. Not to mention this section isn't for your device.

All the threads I read were for Tab2 p51xx or SII.
As explained in first reply (which disappeared), I had and have my damn good reason to condemn people who spam the net with their useless blogs. Won't waste time explaining again a reason which won't certainly arent interested in. But it was costy in term of $.
That said I then realized XDA still exists so I launched a quick google search and fell on this subboard. Reading "Samsung Tab 10.1", unfortunatly didn't mean to me it is a seperated sub forum from the Samsung tab2 10.1. My bad ... do I have to get this thread transfered to the right place or admins will find it useless ?
_____________
My ROM is none. I unrooted but didn't install any ROM. After that I simply figured out I don't need one. But today I need to upgrade to anything above 4.0.4 after the very bad experience I had late friday eve which is quite costy.
I have one more minor trouble I didn't speak of in my first post :
I bought my tablet in September 2012 in the Netherlands GT P5110, ICS 4.0.4. So after checking on the XDA page where all of the stock firmwares are listed, I realized there is no "perfect" match. The only firmware for the Netherlands and for P5110 is from April 2012 and ICS 4.0.3, not 4.0.4 ; yet it is the one I downloaded. Should I get another one ?
About the Root remover, I uploaded to my tab one I downloaded from a website which I can't recall or find on google right now because I downloaded two from two different websites and only remember this one : www techbloggerzone com/2012/09/how-to-unroot-galaxy-tab-2-101-gt html [dots for WWW | COM and HTML were removed since I'm not allowed to post external links yet]
I think there's nothing else missing, but tell me if there is.
IMPORTANT EDIT : I just realized the factory usb plug I have for the Samsung must be damaged. It charges on sector, but isn't identified properly on my laptop and thus won't let me connect it by wire. Didn't figure this out earlier as I did all transfers by Kies wifi. Damn ... but it only explains why Odin can't upload anything to my tab, not why I can't use find the zip install option in Recovery mode for the root_remover.zip
As already stated you're in the wrong place but we all try to help each other here...but no more rants or you might find a stoney silence will be your only reply....
Problem with Odin is more likely laptop drivers and/or windows version and not your cable...
Samfirmware has many 4.0.4 roms for your "area", they have a 4.1.2 version for Netherlands and 4.0.4 for Belgium, Luxembourg etc. As long as you find an XX version it will have Dutch language option.
The recovery you described when you eventually got into it sounded like stock recovery so you wouldn't be able to choose and flash zip from there
Calm down, take a deep breath, get your laptop and drivers sorted first or you'll not get anywhere... Did you have a yellow indication with com port number in the Odin window, if not it is surely drivers. Does windows in any way recognise the tab when connected? (warning tone, does device manager show anything?)

I thought I had all my drivers updated (for the samsung tab, installed like two or three weeks ago), so if it's about drivers, then I don't get it . I checked that in the first place. The cable sometimes fails the connection to my laptop, but today it just won't work. :/. Windows recognizes the device as an external object which can't properly install and such connect (yellow pop up message in right corner, over the task bar). I do not exactly undersatnd what you mean by a yellow indication with "com port" number in the Odin window, but I don't think I had that ... in fact I'm pretty sure about it.
If it's just about drivers, where can I go to find the latest ?
Try looking in Samsung site for drivers here http://www.samsung.com/us/support/
What version of odin are you using? Would recommend 1.3 for the tab 2.
The indication of com port in odin is as in attached image, if you haven't got that then the computer is not recognising your tab, either because of drivers, or cable, but as we've said, you should start with the drivers, probably by downloading the latest from Samsung, deleting all drivers you have at the moment then re-installing.
If the tab is not recognized by the computer then programs like odin cannot do anything as they use the computers' usb bus...

Thank you very much !! I was using Odin 1.85 and Odin 3.7 (used 1.85 for rooting), I'll try a downgraded version.
Keep you in touch if problems are resolved or not after that. Thank you again.

[Q] p769 - softbricked by noob

i finally figured out how to get CWM installed and working, after a couple of months of fighting with it, off and on. so, i guessed that meant i have my bootloader unlocked - "wrong!".
i deleted some thing that wasn't supposed to be deleted, then the damned cell network and lan network stopped working (keeps saying com.android.phone has stopped). so i was going to put cyanogenmod on it, because i thought that i could, and just be done with the whole "missing apps" crap. it turns out "just because you CAN put CM on it doesn't mean you CAN put CM on it". i bricked it. i have NO options to "load" or "flash" or "boot" any thing when the phone is booting up. i would love some clarification as to what i CAN do from here.
i would rather install CM and be done with all of this, but i'll take any advice that gets rid of the problem. the biggest problem is understanding how to put CM on your phone, or to do any thing at all like that, when you cant get into any kind of recovery / boot menu, even though you ARE rooted... i don't care if i have to install cyanogenmod or some one else's CWM backup, i just don't know HOW to do it - especially with no windows (only linux). it's a rooted p769v20d (originally p769v10g).
thanks

i was going to try some stuff mentioned in other threads, but i don't have access to a windows computer - and i don't think i need to root my phone again any way, considering it is still rooted.

fwiw, regarding the mysterious deleted app:
i lose my internet signal as soon as it says "com.android.phone has stopped", then i get it back again right before it says that message again - it ALSO shows a cell-phone signal right before that message. this repeats over and over and over every few seconds - aggravating as hell...
here's the apps that i still have installed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45774770

Nice thread title. That is how I am feeling right now with this phone. I feel like calling tech care and yell at them for a bit to vent. Anyway, why not install fastboot for Linux and flash the ics u and x? I uploaded my u and x folder in the Unlock Bootloader for Noobs thread. Then, flash the 20h.....oh, dang.... sorry. Forgot.... no Windows. Maybe do the built-in restore by holding the volume down, home and power keys?

thanks, but i think i finally got it working. i never knew, after all this time, that after you do the l9recoveryinstaller, at the reboot, there are no cues to tell when when to hit some buttons, and it's not clear what buttons to hit. here's what i did, and, so far, its progress:
1: be rooted
2: install busy box, completely
3: install l9recoveryinstaller
4: reboot
5: after you see the LG logo, hold vol-down until you see the flashing lights (i thought you see the flashing lights and THEN you hit vol-down, but i was wrong).
still fighting to get a rooted rom installed ...
if i choose "install zip from external sdcard" is says:
"finding update ... opening update ... installing update ...installation aborted".
if i choose "restore" instead of "install" it will not let me select any thing, it just keeps saying file not found, when i try to select any further options, whether "restore" or "restore from external sdcard" or "advanced restore from external sdcard". and i already checked to make sure the sdcard was mounted...

I think your phone bootloader is locked, you cannot flash any custom rom zip file. It will soft brick your phone.
Please restore P769 CWM back from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136204. Download backup file and unbzip it. Put extract files in your sdcard /clockworkmod/backup/2013-08-30.12.00.00 folder. Extract file should contain several .img, .tar, .a, .log and .md5

i don't have a windows computer. looks like i'm out a 350$ phone. lesson learned. never will cease to be amazed that so many mobile hackers are using windows... seems like they would be linux users too... that would be awesome, because then there are likely to be linux tools to do this with... and i don't have a windows img to load into a virtual machine... lucky lucky lucky...
thanks any way...

Well correct me if I am wrong, but I guess you "only" deleted some system files, right? Do you remember which ones were the ones? Or at least the folder they were in? Then you only need to extract that stuff from a kdz/ the bin file and push them on your phone using adb or maybe even the dd command.
Maybe if someone is kind enough, he ll probably provide you with the files you need. And cmiiw, but I guess you deleted stuff from /system/app...

Lol, you are a Linux user, you should know how to get your hands on a windows.iso
However, i would recommend using a portable windows xp (bootable usb)
VR is not the best option IMO
You will need this program http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
&
Sorry I can't provide a link to the iso but do a google search for
portable windows xp bootable usb Osheraj

It's depend on what method you use. You can flash kdz using offline method here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2085344
or use LG mobile support tools from LG website. If you choose this you don't need to download any kdz. It'll download kdz automatically from LG server then flash it on your phone. It take about an hour or two.

thats awesome - i wonder if i can get by with using that on wine on linux, instead of borrowing a windows computer... i'm gonna try it...
well, the verdict is in, on this one: i'm screwed. i've tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried, and i can NOT flash this damned phone. it's BRICKED.
i borrowed / hijacked my brother's computer (windows7), all day. i tried a few different things - i even tried the same way i flashed it to update it ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2356536 ), which was worthless to unbrick it.
the problem in every case was that every time the damned flasher got so far along it would "lose the connection to the phone". drivers installed, etc, etc, no difference. i suspect its because i couldnt connect it in all the various modes (mtp ptp etc), since the ONLY way it would connect is in "software upgrade mode".
i had to buy another phone, won't have it till tuesday. lesson learned: NEVER buy a phone that didn't come from samsung... you just can't do what you want with them, without a lot of time, patience, experience, and a windows computer.
thanks for all the help.

Did you try to recover your phone with LG mobile support tool. It can reinstall rom in almost any soft-brick case. Please try it if you haven't try it yet. Many people restore their phone by that software. The steps are
- Download LG mobile support tool from LG web site
- Boot you phone to S/W update mode
- Run Tool and select recover phone
- Wait about 1-2 hours to download and flash
If it's not hardware problem, this should solve your problem

i never found that on their website, and i looked quite a few times. however, i noticed when i used the b2clientsetup.exe that if i run it without running the shttp server first, that it downloads a support tool from the net, which does not work - keeps saying phone lost connection. not sure if its the same tool.

Yes that tool. In my region, it has download link but for P769 it has request repair service.
Download from http://tool.xcdn.gdms.lge.com/client/app/B2CAppSetup.exe
You must remove following lines from hosts file
127.0.0.1 csmg.lgmobile.com
127.0.0.1 csmgdl.lgmobile.com
Then run it

yeah, that's exactly what i did, but it would keep "losing the connection to the phone". not sure why, but i suspect it was a driver issue - and i installed the latest drivers, which made no difference. i also went back and installed older drivers, which made no difference. i must just be lucky as hell, or some thing .

In my country (RO) there are some GSM Repair Centers. You should not give up and you should go to them. Par example, I flashed an HTC Mozart when the battery was dead and I bricked it (idiot, I know). I went to a shop like the ones mentioned above and I think he said that he has to flash the phone using a JTAG or something like that (I know that he has to open the phone to reach it's motherboard, solder some **** out there and... flash I guess). The whole thing was about ~20E. Anyway, keep digging, maybe you'll eventually find something that works for you. If not, go to someone who can "force flash" it and maybe you can save the device.
