Hey Guys,
I just have a small question:
Since the Motorola Defy has a slightly different resolution, can you still play and use apps like Angry Birds? I heard that some apps don't work on non-conformant resolutions...
Thanks in advance,
Wouternet
PS: How Bulky is it?
I have yet to find an app that doesn't work on the defy.
All the apps I've tried have worked fine, including Angry Birds (both the normal version and Seasons, I've tried 'em!)
It's actually quite slim but I've added a gel case onto mine which makes it slightly bulkier. I completely forgot its actual size - you can imagine my surprise when I took the cover off for cleaning
I am going to buy also the Otterbox Commuter, but maybe it will be a bit to much.
I'm going to put on the otterbox only when i know i'm going to be outside. Hunting, going to the beach etc
Just to be sure,
Anybody uses WhatsApp on the Defy??
i use whatsapp all the time...why?
the defy has paratically the same resolution as samsung galaxy s
(only 4 extra pixels on length)
i've never encountered a problem in an app due to resolution
WhatsApp and skype working flawlessly
There are not only 4 but 54 extra pixels i think.
Every games and apps are running great, there are no problems in resolution (no blank spaces)

defy has exactly the same resolution of the new xperia play, and of almost all the android moto too (droid, milestone etc etc...)
Believe it or not the Defy (along with the other phones that have the same resolution) actually has the correct widescreen ratio at 16:9. All the other ones (Desire HD for example) are 16:10, so if anything the other phone's resolutions would make their display not show correctly as long as programers do it right, and program for correct 16:9 resolution.

Hi there,
I've come from a Touch HD to a TP2 to this HTC Hero and just noticed the screen resolution.
Just a question for people using these already, how sharp is the picture quality? Is it a good quality, clear and precise screen? Any feedback on it? Example pictures of it etc?

Cheers mate, but these aren't real pictures of the phone, just computer generated ones by HTC. Ones I am looking for are actual pictures of users screens to see the clarity
You gotta realize something: The diamond / Touch Pro / Touch HD and _STILL_ the Touch Pro2 and Diamond2 are leading the pack when it comes to dot-pitch (amount of pixels cramped into an inch ).
3.2" with a 320x480 resolution is still 'normal to pretty good' these days.
That HTC managed to put 640x480 into 2.6" a year ago is still pretty much unmatched.
Just compare it to any G1 / Magic / iPhone around you. A lot of people have no complaints about it as far as I know. And the smaller resolution means the UI will probably be a bit more responsive / more smooth.
But yes, if you're used to the sharpness of HTC latest high-end WinMo devices (or the Xperia) this will be a step back. But I didn't even think twice about the resolution. I've often thought 640x480 was huge overkill on the screen of the Diamond.
for me the only issue is going from 3.8 to 3.2, resolution not so much
there's a 7 part hands on with Hero on youtube and i'm impressed, gotta have it as soon as possible :/

yeah i saw a preproduction model boot up (wasnt allowed to see anything else ) but it looked nice. It's very iphone-esque in screen quality...i'd say the palm pre tops them all just, the colours were sooo vibrant!
Coming from Diamond (480x640) to a G1, I am a bit disappointed in the resolution for pics and vids (pr0n viewing). But for the normal usage, there is no problem at all, because things aren't as tiny & busy in Android as WinMo anyway, so the user interface itself doesn't need a lot of pixels.
Love the atrix. bought the doc and its all high quality stuff..
issue: when i plug in the dock it seems like my monitors must be old or something because on my main 42" lcd, it can't display the correct resoluion, and on the other computer monitors it can only display the 'wrong' resolution meaning my 1920x1200 monitor can do the 720 tall, and the other 1080p monitor gets forced on the 768 tall res..
is there a way to set the resolution so it matches natively with one of our monitors resoluion standards? i plan on makin this phone my media center but its all outa wack on aspect ratio and blurry as hell due to the re-scaling. can't seem to find the resolution setup anywhere. when you first hook up a new monitor, it gives you the option (maybe 2 mabye 6 different res to choose from) but none of those work except the bad stretched out ones.. and hell yo ucan't get back to that screen ever again!
Nope. It really only works well with a big television or a really small LCD monitor. In which case, why not just get a PC? Im finding it difficult to use this dock for anything really. It isnt good at any single thing.

got a super cheat dynex 1080p tv that supports the phone webtop application perfectly. nice and clear. now my main issues are as follows:
1. upnp - mkv's wont play
2. hulu is a bit sluggish but does play smoothly when it gets moving.
3. samba working great but again, need way to play mkv's on android
4. netflix states that the browser version is not compatible! sucks.
works great for a back room media server and the cool factor is tops.
Convert the mkvs to WMVs. That seems to work the best for me and keeps original quality. I had to convert my 1920x1080 movies to 1920x1020 because the webtop seems to zoom every move on my plasma and I cant do anything about it. So by reducing the height of the video, it now fits perfectly on a 50 inch plasma.
Hi there. I might be upgrading my Google N1 and buying myself a Samsung Galaxy s2. However I dont really see the point in it. Besides the Obvious Hardware differences, 5MP Camera - 8mp Camera, 1GHz Processor - 1.2GHz Processor etc etc I dont see the point in buying it. Im enjoy gaming, so I guess being able to play for graphics heavy games would be something the N1 couldnt do.
Im not into rooting/flashing or anything like that so all that doesnt bother me.
I guess im basically looking for some selling points, sell me the device
Btw, im not trolling, sorry if it comes out that way.
Thanks for the help
I got my SGS2 because I renewed my contract, it's a nice phone, I even think Touchwiz is better than stock Android(though it's no match for Sense) but I wouldnt have bought it since I only bought my Desire less than one year ago.
The phone is fast, very fast and links are easier to hit but I miss my optical trackpad (I think the difference between the Desire and N1 is the optical trackpad vs trackball). I think my SLCD screen on the desire was better than the samoled+ but coming from amoled it will be a big upgrade in screen quality. Another fgood thing is that it's really light yet feels very sturdy
ok what makes it soo special
well its like an iphone
when ur using a normal android phone even with a custom rom ie cm7 u notice these small lags when scrolling
ie scrolling lag when browsing the internet and the menu etc
its super fast (1080p flash with no lag while scrolling )
responsive
amazing screen
VERY thin
super lite
physical home button
VERY sturdy ( u cant bend it + doesn't make any creaking sounds)
all of this in one phone
AKA the perfect android phone
for me those small lags irritate the hell out of me
and the SG2 is the only android phone that doesn't have these to my knowledge
there is no lag on this phone-ever.

Strange because my S2 lags just like any other phone.
Home screen scrolling stutter and random "reloading" of apps.
Worst browser checker boxing I have ever seen.
2-3 second lock screen lag.
4 hour battery life when browsing over wifi.
Sorry but it certainly does not seem to be the best phone out there, not that much better than my HTC Desire tbh.
You can completely balls up and brick the phone and still recover 99.9% of the time .

If you don't like the colors, the issue is not the display, but the images on the screen. If you don't like the default, you can simply set the "Background effect" in the "Display" settings to "Movie" to sort of match an LCD screen.
By the looks of it, the Movie mode matches the sRGB color space (which is what JPEG images are made for), while the "Standard" mode matches the aRGB color space. A standard phone LCD screen (like that from, say, iPhone 4) doesn't even match the full sRGB color space, which makes images look washed out.
So if you want to see the display in all its splendor, you have to shoot some RAW photos, convert them to aRGB and see them on the phone's display. I can tell you that on mine they look mind boggling. Colors are similar to those from my hardware-calibrated professional display, but the black level (which changes the perception of colors) and the sharpness (due to the very small pixels) are to die for.
As for subpixels, I can't even see individual pixels...
Here is my experience with it (bottom line - I love it):
(Keep in mind that I'm coming from a 3 years old HTC Polaris.)
Remarks:
* Size: no problems; the size of the display is awesome
* Screen: absolutely gorgeous with no problems whatsoever; I have looked at a photo (taken with a DSLR and converted from RAW to the aRGB color space), side by side with an iPhone 4 - the iPhone's display is simply non-existent in terms of black level, gamut and sharpness (despite it's higher resolution)
* WiFi: fine; the network that I use gives me 650 KB/s for downloads
* TouchWiz: fine (I deleted all the predefined panels and made my own panels)
* Notifications: no led like HTC, but the NoLed application is great
* Battery: using it like the old HTC (meaning just having the 3G connection on and looking at the time a few times a day), I get 11% consumption per day (with the HTC I had about 12...14%); using it heavily, I can drain the entire battery in one day, so it depends on what you're doing with it, and you will really want to play with it (note that the drain may not be linear, so it may take less than 9 days to drain the entire battery on light use)
* GPS (without network connection and old aGPS data): 3-4 minutes to acquire the first lock (if I have half the sky in view - I'm at a window), then 20 seconds if I close and restart the GPS test application; indoors, no chance of getting a lock unless you're in a wood house or something (its performance is acceptable); the accuracy is around 30 meters (might be better with the full sky visible and more than 4 locked satellites)
* The sound through normal headphones is awesome (virtually on par with that from my notebook, with the same headphones; the maximum volume is fine for someone who isn't trying to get deaf)
* Phone call clarity is great
* Phone signal is really difficult to decrease; it stubbornly clings on 4 bars (I have to put my fingers around the bottom AND be somewhere deep inside a concrete building in order to get only 3 bars)
* The internal memory has a write speed of about 9.5 MB/s (for large files); a class 10 micro SDHC card that I bought has about 8.5 MB/s; for small files (about 150 KB each), the speed is about 140 KB/s for both memories
What I dislike (the software issues are not necessarily faults of SGS2):
* Difficult to grab from a table; the sides of the case are slippery, and the low thickness doesn't help either
* Takes about 1.5 seconds to come out from standby (from the moment I press the power button); this is annoying when I just what to check the time
* Heats up significantly around the back camera (when playing an HD movie, it actually becomes hot in that area)
* Only 16 GB of internal memory (I think 64 GB is more on my taste)
* Can't copy files bigger than 4GB on either the internal memory or on the SDHC card
* Doesn't have an included firewall (and installing one requires rooting)
* The alarm application doesn't increase the sound volume in time (like from 0% to full in, say, 20 seconds)
* The ringer volume doesn't increase the sound volume in time
* The included movie player doesn't play FLVs and DTS sound (MoboPlayer knows DTS but doesn't decode the MKVs in hardware, so they have a bad framerate, while VPlayer doesn't use 24 bit graphics even in high quality native mode - it shows either banding or a grid pattern)

Well im just on stock UK orange firmware and performance is not what I expected from the hype, like I said in my post its pretty bad.
As for wifi browsing, my 18 month old compaq mini 311c netbook manages 5+ hours easy and my AWm11x even longer.
I am however getting confused a little, some people state the browser does get checker boarding and others state it should not and i should return my unit.

There has been a lot of discussion about whether a 1080P screen on a 5 inch device really makes that much of a difference. There will probably be a hit in terms of battery life and responsiveness so is the higher resolution worth it?
Since some people here have already seen the phone, I wanted their opinion. How much of a difference is there between the screen on the DNA versus say the One X ? In what activities does 1080P make the biggest difference: reading, video, games ?

I cannot see any pixelation on my OneX and even my 267 ppi Note2 with very small text.
It is still more like a gimmick than a real deal. I can see many people get crazy about it, but the user experience is not very different from my old OneX, even identical.
I thinl in terms of smoothness, speed and screen, Android high end phones and iPhones has reached the limit. Now software and battery life are more important.
. That's why i will keep my Note2 for quite a long time.
In a game with good lighting graphics, etc it might make a difference. Not sure if the s4pro will be able to handle games that look good enough to make a noticeable difference, if there is any. Games theoretically could be made to look smoother without AA with a really high ppi too.

In my opinion ppi is more relevant in rading text than playing games.
And there is no game support 1920x1080 pixels resolution yet.

And the best part is a game with 1080p graphics will be about 3 or 4 gigs and the device only has about 8 usable so you wont be able to play any games that are made for the resolution anyway, lol.
Yeah 1080P games and video will eat up that 11gb pretty quickly. I suspect that we will have to wait for the Galaxy S4 for a 1080P phone to be done right, with a microSD slot and a big battery.
Still web reading is probably my no.1 use on my phone and that doesn't require storage. If 1080P significantly improves the reading experience, that alone would be worth it for me.

well Batman Returns is not even a 1080 game and its 2.25 gigs, so I kindly dis agree with you Sir.
The size will depending on length and style of the game. If you made wind waker 1080p then it wouldn't have to be as bad as something that's supposed to look real.
I do think that the rom is going to feel small in a year or so for anyone who likes to play a lot of 3D exploring games though. You'll probably only be able to keep a couple installed at a time, maybe 3 if you don't keep much music stored. But most people tend to play 1 or 2 games at a time so it actually might be an annoyance but not a deal breaker..

Anw, it's about personal opinion, and I think everyone agree that both phones are good devics. For you guys, high physical resolution maybe very important, while I prefer longer battery usage (normally 7 -10 hours screen on time) and interesting features (s pen, true multi- tasking with split windows).

i heard that Samsung had to turn the brightness down on the s3 because of the battery
In the real world we generally don't hold our phone right against our eyes, because it would be out of focal range for us. Which means that virtually nobody will notice the difference between this phones screen, the GS3, the iphone 5, or the GN II. If you do notice a difference your probably the person that also says they can feel the earth rotating.

You are completely right, it is about personal opinion. For me personally the dealbreaker on the Note II was the phones size (mostly width) and slippery plastic (i sure as hell wouldnt add a case to make it wider), and had nothing to do with the screen resolution. The note II does have nice battery and storage, but that doesnt change how huge it feels in my hand. I also care about how a phone looks, and the first impression I get on a Note II is that its ridiculous looking especially when holding one up to your head for phone calls.
I preordered mine. I've watched countless reviews and between the wireless charging back, s4 processor, 2GB Ram, the performance with near identical hardware outperforms the Nexus 4 in almost every synthetic test.

Yes, but why should you have to? It appears that the usage model HTC has gone forward with is to carry two devices, one phone and one external memory device. Thats two power cords and two devices where ever you go. That is a terrible usage model to be designing a device around. How can anyone expect that model to succeed in today's world of 64 gig + phones?
They should move to a one device usage model, where your device has enough memory to have at least ten apps, and take pictures and videos, and still utilize the cloud. A minimum of 32 gigs is needed with the new features (photo sphere) and 1080p recording.......

Wouldn't it be better to just have 1920x1200, I think pushing that many pixels put a burden on the battery and cpu for little advantage, With the battery size the nexus have it would have lasted as long as the ipad. I haven't received mine but I don't think it will make much of a difference compared to a full hd display. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think it's great.
But don't we have like 20 threads for this topic already...
It's an A15. I mean A9 quadcore and duo core krait pushes 1920X1200 just fine, so you might as well if the chip supports it. Otherwise the A15 is superfluous. I rather the screen be superfluous rather than the CPU/GPU.
You can never have too many pixels, the reason it might look superfluous is because it's so crystal clear, but try reading xda in your browser in overview mode and the tiny text is still crystal, then try it on an mdpi tablet or similar.
I'm just trying my best right now with experimentation to git pixel perfect wallpapers.

I noticed the difference between the ipad 3 and the infinty/Acer. The Acer one actually has a nicer screen than the infinity btw which was surprsing. The Acer one had a super nice screen,
If there was a common resolution between 1920x1200 and 2560x1600 then I would say yes 2560x1600 is a bit overkill. However, there isn't a common resolution in use between the two and having owned a 1920x1200 tablet I can say that there is a noticeable difference between it and the iPad retina display in terms of text clarity.
All that said, I've not seen the Nexus 10 struggle to push 2560x1600. The only real issue it has with smoothness is with Chrome and this is a widespread issue. Chrome hasn't been updated since version 18 which was released back in March. Since then the Chrome for Android team has been working to get the Android port open sourced and upstream. There are already several bug fixes for responsiveness in Chrome 23+ but we'll have to wait until they make an Android release.
it's lame that you made this thread while you haven't received it...
I have gotten mine.. and have played with it for about 4 hours now.. and have lost about 10% battery.... 9000MAH is ALOT.. hasn't been a issue here..
I'd say that if your main use of a tablet involves text (as does mine, between ebook reading, browsing, RSS reading, etc.), then you simply can't have enough pixels. Other things matter, like color gamut and contrast and reflectivity and such (which is why the iPad 3 screen is so excellent even beyond the resolution), but for reading, I'll take every pixel I can get.
If you're mainly looking to game and watch video and such, then any true HD screen would likely be sufficient (and the higher the pixel count, the worse for gaming). So, pick your poison, I suppose.
