[Q] Not just files disappeared but also folders - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I received my new gTablet Tuesday and had lots of fun with it for a few days, adding apps, getting frustrated because some places sent them to my phone and not letting me download to the gTab, loading media files, etc. Life was good. Then I added an external 32GB mSD and, just as many other people found out, files started disappearing. For me, though, they didn't just disappear from the media players but from the file system. Not only that but the folders began to disappear, too, and now I'm missing several folders from my file system: Video, Pictures, Music, Downloads, and many more that don't come to mind, plus all of their contents.
I was hoping that a reflash (using Roebeet's excellent sticky thread) would help but everything is still missing. Is there a way to recover or reflash the contents of the /sdcard? Even reloading the stock image would be acceptable as I would at least have a base to work from.
And, since my readings hint that this is all a result of the .nomedia issue, just where should that particular file be stored so that the media scanner doesn't delete thing or is my problem greater than that? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am not sure, but I wonder if anundelete utility on your pc might recover files on the sd card?
As for the no media file, I have mine on the root directory as well as the media directories. This is bad though, because Very few programs will find files on the sd card. You have to use a file manager program.

[Q] Gallery deleting images on SD card

When I put in a microSD card with images on it, Gallery indexes them. When I reboot those files are deleted, never to be found again.
With a fair amount of research, I found out about the ".nomedia" file "fix".
But this causes Gallery to Completely skip the files in the folder.
I WANT them to display in Gallery, so I can view my folders and flip through them, not completely skipped.
I'm having a hard time finding anything here or elsewhere, hoping for some input.
cheers!
That's a known issue with VEGAn and possibly some other ROM's. Never had that probelm with TnTLite or the stock ROM.

[Q] VEGAn deleting videos

On my g tab running any version of VEGAn Tab, even the newest gingerbread one consistantly deletes video files from my sd card. Neither cyanogen and TnT lite do this. Is this a known issue or just me?
I had the same problem. Someone stated that it was a known issue. The solution was somewhere in the Vegan forum. Create a ".nomedia" file and save it to the folder you keep your movie files in. It seems to have worked for me since I did it a week ago.
Thanks, I'll try it, but I don't have any videos after they got deleted while I am on vacation. How do you create a file with no extention? Is there a file manager app? Im pretty sure you can't create an extentionless file with windows.
you can create extensionless files in windows.
Just make a note pad file that is blank and save it as .nomedia
Its a known issue and only effects some people. The why is not known but the fix is pretty simple. It just tells the os not to try and load video and pics on the card into the gallery app automatically.

[Q] Problem with .nomedia and deleted files in ext_sd

Hi all,
I have been having a weird problem with my HTC flyer (unrooted, original GB rom) where from time to time it will create .nomedia file on the main directory of my sd card (ext_sd) so the files that i put in there do not get shown in picture gallery or media players. Usually i manually delete the file and do unmount - remount, which sometimes do the trick before the .nomedia re-appear.
On top of that, i just noticed as well, the files inside the directory in ext_sd start to go missing! The folders are still in tact, but my files inside the folders are missing..
Anyone can advise me how to troubleshoot this? Thanks!

that's weird...my guess would be a dodgy app you've installed...i would do a factory reset and not install anything other than 'official' apps from known sources, like google apps or official dropbox, for 2 or 3 days to see if it keeps happening
you could also try to format your sd card
Bump! Similar Problem; playlist files disappear after media scanner completes

I've had similar problems; I'm trying to transfer playlist files to an ext_sd. I can see the files transferred to a ext_sd directory. But as the "Media scanner running" completes I literally see the files disappear!
I've reformatted the SD card several times. This has only started to happen in the past few month but I can't see any new apps that I've installed. If anything I've uninstalled apps.
Sorry but this is on a Galaxy S Wifi media player (yes I know this is the Flyer, etc thread but it's the same problem so I'm trying to avoid splitting any information that might be found...)
Any help gratefully accepted.

Moving to Q&A
hi,
i know i have different device, which is samsung galaxy note 10.1
but the funny thing is, i have the same issue as well.
although i run it on official 4.1.2 unrooted.
i think, the problem is one of our apk installed. but didnt find it yet. tried to uninstalling one by one, but still no clue.
if someone had solved this problem, i'd really appreciate to hear that

[Q] What's wrong with the file system?

Let me start by saying that I've had experience with Android phones and rooting/flashing ROMs, but this is my first Android tablet and first device with ICS.
Now onto the issue : Almost NOTHING works with the file system when hooked up to my computer through USB, mainly copy/paste. I can't add movies, pictures, or MP3s unless I create a seperate folder i.e. Movies1. The default folders let me do absolutely nothing, including delete the **** Asus throws in there. But that's not that big of an issue to me. The big problem I'm having is I can't transfer my TitaniumBackup folder onto my computer. I always keep a backup of my apps on my computer, but nothing can get them off this damn tablet. I guess I have to go through Dropbox but that's kind of a pain. If anyone knows a way around this, help would be appreciated!
For the record, I've tried ES Fileexplorer, Root Explorer, AntTek Explorer, and Astro to delete the files in Movies and Music. Nothing works, and nothing even gives me the option of changing permissions.
EDIT- Apparently I can copy my CWM backups just fine, but nothing happening with TiBu. Edited title for less rage as well
I'm not sure why you are having file transfer issues via usb but I have had good success with Airdroid for transferring files to and from my PC to the tablet.

Where did my folders and files go?

All the files and folders on my Galaxy Note 3's internal and external storage have reverted to what appears to be the defaults, all the photos (DCIM folder), videos, downloaded files, apk's, setup files, language files and who knows what else are gone, just vanished, not visible in Windows nor in Solid File Explorer, some apps are missing their language files or data files.
The phone was plugged in to USB on a WIN7 PC and the explorer window seemed to freeze, eventually I had to unplug the phone and now when I reconnect or look with a file explorer there must be >40 folders and thousands of files missing.
So what happened? Where are all the files? Are they recoverable?

This can be a files coruption, most of thing can cause data losage, like some tweaks, boosting apps, also hardware problems.
I know one LG bello user which changed few sdcards because of the rom. That was a bug which destroy sd.
Files are not recoverable, also I suggest not only to you, upload your files(pics, videos, other data) to cloud services because you never knows what can happens with the device you can drop it into water or to throw it in a deep abyss
Always keep files on safe place.
MEGA, Google drive, mediafire, or any other.

This just happened again, luckily my photos are backed up to the cloud but how does this keep happening? Has anyone else had this happen?
I'm kinda amazed that it actually happened again and wasn't a glitch and that no-one else seems to have reported something similar. I'm sure now I can cause it to happen on command.
(I'm using MTP on 5.1.1 Resurrection Remix Rom.)
Maybe you can open your files via cardrider?
