[Q] Problem with .nomedia and deleted files in ext_sd - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

Hi all,
I have been having a weird problem with my HTC flyer (unrooted, original GB rom) where from time to time it will create .nomedia file on the main directory of my sd card (ext_sd) so the files that i put in there do not get shown in picture gallery or media players. Usually i manually delete the file and do unmount - remount, which sometimes do the trick before the .nomedia re-appear.
On top of that, i just noticed as well, the files inside the directory in ext_sd start to go missing! The folders are still in tact, but my files inside the folders are missing..
Anyone can advise me how to troubleshoot this? Thanks!

that's weird...my guess would be a dodgy app you've installed...i would do a factory reset and not install anything other than 'official' apps from known sources, like google apps or official dropbox, for 2 or 3 days to see if it keeps happening
you could also try to format your sd card

Bump! Similar Problem; playlist files disappear after media scanner completes

I've had similar problems; I'm trying to transfer playlist files to an ext_sd. I can see the files transferred to a ext_sd directory. But as the "Media scanner running" completes I literally see the files disappear!
I've reformatted the SD card several times. This has only started to happen in the past few month but I can't see any new apps that I've installed. If anything I've uninstalled apps.
Sorry but this is on a Galaxy S Wifi media player (yes I know this is the Flyer, etc thread but it's the same problem so I'm trying to avoid splitting any information that might be found...)
Any help gratefully accepted.

[Q] Not just files disappeared but also folders

I received my new gTablet Tuesday and had lots of fun with it for a few days, adding apps, getting frustrated because some places sent them to my phone and not letting me download to the gTab, loading media files, etc. Life was good. Then I added an external 32GB mSD and, just as many other people found out, files started disappearing. For me, though, they didn't just disappear from the media players but from the file system. Not only that but the folders began to disappear, too, and now I'm missing several folders from my file system: Video, Pictures, Music, Downloads, and many more that don't come to mind, plus all of their contents.
I was hoping that a reflash (using Roebeet's excellent sticky thread) would help but everything is still missing. Is there a way to recover or reflash the contents of the /sdcard? Even reloading the stock image would be acceptable as I would at least have a base to work from.
And, since my readings hint that this is all a result of the .nomedia issue, just where should that particular file be stored so that the media scanner doesn't delete thing or is my problem greater than that? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I am not sure, but I wonder if anundelete utility on your pc might recover files on the sd card?
As for the no media file, I have mine on the root directory as well as the media directories. This is bad though, because Very few programs will find files on the sd card. You have to use a file manager program.

[Q] Media apps can't find files

Hey Guys,
My English is not perfect, sorry about that. I think you could help me to solve this problem.
I have cyanogen 6 the final version on my mini pro and my media apps (like gallery 3d, or MIUI music) can't find any pictures or music from sd card. But these files are in the sd card - I can open it from my computer or Es File Explorer. One gallery app said that it can't find any photos from sd, because I have to get access for it, or something like that. I think this is because of the superuser app.
Thanks for the answers.
I had the same issue initially. A reinstall of the ROM fixed it though.
I tried this. First Gallery 3d was ok, but laiter it started showing ,,there are no items in your collection. I think the files in sd card are protected or something like that. But thank you Sideromelane for your trying to help. Any more idea?
Hey check if you have a file/folder named 'nomedia.' in your sd card. If yes delete it.
Worked for me.

Make sure you look for it with your PC, as it's a hidden android file and some android explorers won't show it, it's a file called .nomedia
check whether its excluded from media scan...
Yeah! I found the file with name .nomedia and deleted it. Now it works perfect!
Thank you guys for your help!

[FIX][CM9][CM10]Music files NOT appearing in Music Players

WARNING: you need root for this!
A common problem with ICS and JB Stock as well as ROMs is that the music isn't appearing in the music player.
This is caused due to presence of a file ".nomedia" in your music player folders.
Up until now, you either had to use inbuilt music player ES File Explorer or search and delete all .nomedia files and hope that you get lucky.
But searching your entire phone AND sdcard can take hours, especially if you've got a big (16/32 GB) sd-card.
Also, thousands of .nomedia files could turn up if you've got lots of media files (hello manga addicts ). I have Mango installed and had nearly 3 GB of manga on my phone (), thus the search (using SolidExplorer) hadn't finished even after 3 hours.
Well, don't worry!
I've got the quickest solution to your problem:
Connect phone to computer via USB cable, or better yet use sd-card reader to directly connect the sd-card.
Use your computer to search and delete all ".nomedia" files. It's much faster .
Re-mount sd-card on your phone.
Now use Root Explorer or any other file explorer with root access.
navigate to <root directory>/data/
delete the ".nomedia" file present over there.
Enjoy your music!
Press the THANKS button, I need it.
The problem isn't quite so simple. I don't have have .nomedia files anywhere in my music folders, and yet it doesn't scan them.
I too dont have .nomedia file anywhere ! I think the problem is in libs ?
Try this.
If you have the patience, install mixzing player. reboot your phone. then open mixzing first. go into folders, then the folder where you store your music, then wait. The names of the songs should change from filenames to the id3 information. Repeat for each folder, scrolling so that the info appears for each track; all while not actually playing anything. Now open your stock player, the tracks should have appeared. If they haven't, force stop the media scanner and try again.
Hit thanks if it helps !

Are you guys sure you checked the /data and /data/data files? Get your SD mounted on a pc and search for .nomedia files; include hidden files in your search.
Should work. Did for me AND a couple of my friends, all facing same problems and having different ROMs.
Just in case, tell me the names of the ROMs you people are using.
Will try to help.
Running a fresh install of PAC by nims11 and I have all my media visible. So no worries.
Did notice some corrupted jpgs , deleted them

Couldn't install on. USB storage or SD card

Is anyone here running into problems installing apps from the app store? I have been getting the following error message the past few days whenever I install certain apps, but not others: "Couldn't install on USB storage or SD card."
I researched this error message and discovered that deleting a temp file (smdl2tmp1) from the phone in one of two directories should fix it. However, that file doesn't exist anywhere on my phone.
I've gone as far as wipe my phone completely (after backing up) and reinstalling the ROM, but no good.
Still scratching my head.

I've got the same issue on MagioROM's latest version with all my paid apps. Very frustrating. I wonder if it's because of a firmware incompatability? I'm reading about S4 users with the same issue.

Hey, thanks for your reply. I actually do not have that folder on my root despite enabling hidden files. Otherwise I would have tried it out since it seems to be the common solution online...

Those hidden folders do not exist with this ROM.
I wound up just installing the Blackout Extreme 4.2.2 release. It doesn't have the issue with installing paid apps. However I did have to pull the Twitter and Instagram Blinkfeed APKs from another ROM as the Blackout Extreme ROM stripped them. The R2 MagioROM stripped Instagram for blinkfeed too (much to my annoyance).

Yeah, I spent a long while hooking my phone up to various computers and operating systems attempting to figure out if the folders were just hidden in Root Explorer or ES File Explorer, but it looks like those folders just don't appear anywhere. I guess I'm switching back to Elegancia, but man, how disappointing.

Another fix
Hi guys
Just posted this fix in other thread, and thought you might also find it useful.
Just encountered the same problem guys. Searched all over and only solutions I've found was (time-consuming) unmounting the SD Card or deleting the smdl2tmp1.asec file.
Since I can't be bothered to UNMOUNT the SD Card everytime I install the app and the mentioned file can not be found in my system (Note 3) I found 3rd solution which solved my problem.
It works only on phones which have external SD Card.
Here's what you need to do (instruction for dummies )
1. Connect your phone or SD Card to your PC
2. Copy most important folders and files to your hard drive - photos, music, videos, apk's etc. (basically do a backup of those files)
3. Disconnect the phone from your PC
4. Go to settings in your phone (Settings>Storage>SD Card)
5. Format your SD Card.
6. Copy back the folders and files you backed up on your PC.
It worked for me, so I thought I'd share it with those who don't find "unmounting" and deleting smdl2tmp1.asec file helpful.
Hope this helps.
Good luck!!

Samsung Voice Note

Hello,
I have a bunch of voice recordings that are in my sounds folder, (m4a and 3ga files) when using the Samsung Voice Note App. If I record a new one it shows up but once I move them between sound folders (internal or external) they dont show up within the app anymore. Is there a way to refresh or should I be using Root Explorer to push them somehow? I tried using the stock file manager app and Astro. Almost like its not refreshing...
Any help appreciated

Hello,
When you're copying it to the External Storage, where are you copying them to? Is there a file called ".nomedia" in the folder where these items are located (or in a high-level folder)? If that ".nomedia" file is present, apps won't notice anything in that folder (or it's subfolders) when they scan for media. This prevents apps like gallery from seeing the various thumbnails that are throughout the storage.
If you don't see them in your file explorer, you may need to turn on "Show Hidden Files" in the settings.
Hope this helps!

I didn't realize someone responded til today. I appreciate that! That did help because now I know why it wasn't working. Now my question is is there a workaround for removing that .nomedia file? Its not allowing me to do anything. Any suggestions?

I've never had issues deleting .nomedia files... Does your root explorer actually have root access?
Where are you trying to copy these files? Maybe you can create a new folder (sans .nomedia file) and stick them in there. Just remember, if there are any "parent" folders that have the .nomedia in them, it won't search the subfolders for media.

Your the man! Root explorer wouldn't delete it and I kept getting this message View attachment 2784852
so then I ended up deleting it from the stock file manager and it worked. I would of never figured that out without your help. I kept seeing the. nomedia. file but ignored it. I don't even know where it came from, just glad that worked.
