Problem with Apps on SD Card - Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini

Hi. I've a strange problem. When I install any app to SD Card, after reboot, the app disappears from launcher. But it is still there in the list of installed apps. If I move it to phone, then it reappears.
I am using the native apps2sd, not the ext2 partition one. It is strange because it was working previously without any issue. I have experienced this both with the MiniCM RC1 and xCyanogenMini. I am therefore considering to revert back to stock eclair firmware. Because App2SD was the only reason I wanted to upgrade. I don't want to partition my SD Card.

Is it 'native Apps2SD'? SE has never issued an offical Apps2SD, different Apps2SD scripts may vary from each other.
It's a kinda bug I experienced, and crashed my 2 MiniCM ROMs, and bricked my phones.
I had to make use of SEUS to flash these phones back into 2.1 stock ROMs, and started flashing other ROMs later on.
Luckily, I backed those applications with Slax (a live CD) before those failed experiments. Reformated those Ext3 partitions in WinXP to bypass adding root permission to it, ran again the Apps2SD scripts, put apps back into /system/sd/app directory (or /sd-ext/app directory in MiniCM ROMs)... and the nightmare was over.
You may try to see if it works for you then.
You may also shift into another launcher to see if it solves your problem, and may also save your time.
And don't forget to tell us your final finding on this problem ;-)

App2SD: Duplicate SD Card

Hi,
I am running Cyanogen 6.1 with APP2SD running, and have an 8GB SD Card with apps installed on it. I recently bought a new 16GB SD Card and was wondering how I duplicate the contents of my 8GB SD Card to the 16GB SD Card.
Any ideas would be VERY helpful.
I never tried, but I think it should be enough if you copy contents from the old one to the new one using a computer.
Sent from my HTC Hero
Unless you are using the native Froyo Apps-to-SD and not the old solution, then you can't just copy the files on a computer. Using the old system the apps are stored on a completely separated partition to what is shown when you mount your SD Card.
You can probably access that partition if you are using Linux, but having never used the old Apps2SD I can't check it myself.
I thought that might be the case. Linux laptop here I come!!
I recently bought a 16GB card and my Hero started to lag and restart SENSE randomly
Please reply to know if you have this issue
Hi,
I haven't put the 16GB in yet, as I have Apps installed to my 8GB SD Card and didn't know what to do (good job I have a linux based laptop really).
Sadly (not for me, but you know what I mean...) my ROM doesn't have SENSE. I am running CyanogenMOD 6.1.0.
What ROM are you running, I may know what the issue is?

I am running the villainrom12 with sense and i have overclocked it to 352/652
I'm such a dumbass... what "class" is the SD Card? And which elements of the ROM are laggy?

I have a class4 memory card, and when i am launching some apps htc sense just force closes and the app i wanted to open just quits, after it is happened several times, htc senses starts to force close again and again until phone starts to lag and then hangs up.
From what I understand, VillainROM12 is a SENSE 2.1 ROM. I can't understand why this would lag, other than the implementation of SENSE isn't the patched version with the LAG fix. Early versions of SENSE were terrible and HTC had to release a patch to fix the lag issues.
The force close issue could either be down to the app timing out or something isn't installed properly. I can't really tell without installing VillainROM on my phone (I have CyanogenMOD 6.1 which, in my opinion, is flawless). My ROM isn't sense orientated, it uses apps like Launcher Pro plus (I think it comes with ADW.Launcher by default) instead of sense. ADW does have a theme pack to make it look like HTCs SENSE app.
I would suggest a couple of things;
Check available RAM
Back up your SD Card and reformat it as follows;
EXT2 = 512MB (You can use more, but you shouldn't need to)
(DO NOT use EXT3 or EXT4, these partition types are kernel dependent, and will lower the life of your card, they are intended for large partitions of like 50GB upwards)
SWAP = 0MB
FAT = The rest
I use AmonRA Recovery 1.7.0.1 which has a very useful partition SD card feature, better than ClockworkMods anyway (Evertime I partitioned a card in ClockworkMOD the phone refused to boot). Unfortunately if you have any apps installed to the SD card you may lose them unless you move them back to the phone (If you go Settings > Applications then click on "On SD Card" this will give you a list of "moved" apps).
Again, if you HAVEN'T got any apps on the SD card this could be the problem, as you are using ALL your phones RAM to store apps in, so like a PC running low on memory, no RAM means poor performance.
Try checking available resources before re-partitioning your SD Card. If you can't see what memory is available to you, try an app ion the market place called App 2 SD Free by Sam Lu, it's free, and gives you a readout of exactly what memory is being used (it also gives you a list of apps you CAN move to the SD card). I'd use it for diagnostics for now, as I don't know if VillainROM12 comes with APP2SD installed by default.
Try these out and let me know how you get on. PLEASE make a nandroid backup first, this CAN restore your SDCARD if the partition goes wrong.
Please be advised that I take no responsibility for any issues that may occur. I have performed all these tasks on my HTC Hero with no problems though.
I have tried these things but nothing helped. I have done everything the same with same type 8GB card and there was no problem, i think that HERO just cant handle 16GB but HTC says that it can support up to 32GB.

I can't really comment until I format my 16GB car and put it in (should be arriving this morning). Have you thought about another ROM? SENSE is notorious for causing lag. The guys at VillainROM also make FroydVillain (I think the latest version is 1.7.2). This doesn't have SENSE though, and you will need to backup your setting/messages/apps/and everything else first.
Backing up settings is slightly different to a nandroid. I recommend Backup Everything, as you can select what you want to back up. The only problem is you usually need to re-download the app on your new ROM to restore stuff, even if you backup apps too.
Update: Take a look at this thread for other ROMs

[Q] can't move apps to sd card

juts updated to tazz v28 and cannot move any apps to the sd card - any ideas?
Did you enable app moving in the CM settings? I don't have a CM ROM flashed currently (back to xtrSENSE) so I can't tell you exactly where but I think it's one of the first menus in the CM settings.
yes, i have that selected, and it doesn't matter which app i try to move, even w/ app2sd. when i touch the "move to sd card" button, i get the "failed to move application" error message. any help is greatly appreciated. thank you.
You can always do it again, wipe data+dalvik 3x, reflash. Make sure you do a nand backup before you do any flashing !!!!!
You can also go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=733897 Scroll down to post #2 (FAQ)
-This is due to your sdcard being partitioned more than likely. You can either format the entire card on a pc to fat32 or use recovery to unpartition. FROYO won't recognize the ext partitions on your card. App2Sd on FROYO stores all the apps in the same partition as everything else, just in a separate folder that it creates on its own. ***CAUTION***
(YOU WILL LOOSE ANY DATA ON CARD AS IT WILL BE FORMATED SO BACK UP YOUR CARD FIRST!)
-Boot to recovery.
-partition sdcard.
-0 swap
-0 ext2 for apps2sd.
-this will make one whole fat32 partition.
Resolved or no ?????
i've done everything listed w/ no change. the only thing i haven't done is start over and i was hoping to avoid that. everything else is working well, just running out of space. any other suggestions or thoughts? thank you - it is appreciated.

Sadly I think that starting over is about your only choice, if nothing else has fixed it. You could also always buy a new sd card and use that new one, then one by one start copying files onto the new card from your old one. Check the space available every time you copy a file over to see if it is 1 file causing this problem. Not really sure what else to do about it but what I posted should help. Try that out and let me know what happens.

What exactly do you mean? Make a difference to what? Your Apps2SD problem or starting over?
No to either one, in this case.
i meant my app2sd card issue. didn't know if anyone else had this build on this phone and was experiencing a similar problem.
Hi,
I am having the same issue with this ROM, Apps move to SD is failing. I just posted a comment in tazz froyo 2.2.1 build, v28 forum. anyone else having this problem ???
I am having this same problem on my dInc after flashing Kingdom Gengersense 3.0, I have yet to try and reformat my sd card. Hoping that will work
Just formatted the card and did not work. Still won't let me move my apps to SD

It won't let you move any? Some apps don't officially support being moved, but you can force move everything (except you'll not want to move keyboards and widgets because then they won't operate correctly) with Titanium Backup or some other apps out there.
Its Super user is bugged for gingerbread since the update im trying to find the fix

[Solved] Memory shortage

Hi,
I am new here and did my best searching but couldn;t find a conclusive answer so i just need some suggestions about a way forward.
So far using Froyo's move to SD implementation I have managed to gain some space on the phone for more apps but i am still running out. I also have to use the slow Apps 2 SD application.
So my problem is I want more space for apps. Using adb, setting the install location to SD card helps provide some more but i have hit that limit too.
So, from what i've read so far, there is another symbolic link based method, that creates a partition on the SD card and then the phone appears to think its still on the phone.
I have a stock ROM and would prefer not having a custom ROM for now. What would be the suggested way of getting Apps2sdext functionality? I mean like installing a package after rooting.
I have read about rooting, and apps2sdext also seems to need root. But i'd really appreciate if somebody could drop some links as to what I could do. Here are my thoughts of what they might be:
Root phone
Format SD card with partitions
Install a2sd
Another question: is there no way of using Gparted, etc to resize partitions and create the ext4 partition on pc? As in before taking it to the phone? that way no need to reinstall some apps.
Ok so for now I see I can use Z4Root to root my phone. So i've sorted that part out.
I also saw on DarkTremor apps2sd page that stock roms need a custom init.rc. Where are the instructions for that?

I'm not quite sure. I'm not an A2SD user. But, here are my hunches/ideas/opinions:
I suggest you partition with the partitioner in the recovery image. A2SD may have trouble finding the ext partition when the layout is quite different from what it expects, though I'm not quite sure.
As for not having to reinstall apps, this is what I did prior to installing A2SD:
Move all apps to phone memory
Backup
Partition SD
Flash A2SD
Install A2SD (yes, I had to manually launch a2sd scripts --')
Done
Works as intended, but I've found that there wasn't a significant increase in free phone memory storage, but I'm very sure a2sd was applied.
So I went back to native A2SD.
Which leads me to say: I suggest flashing a custom ROM with A2SD integrated
Idk, maybe I just didn't give A2SD some time. Just try it out.
Hmmm interesting! Still digging up more info as i go along...
Ok so far I installed, z4root and it installs fine and does the whole root and restart thing.
Now when i browse from adb shell i still get the $ prompt and not the # prompt. But when i go into z4root it provides options for re-root and un-root...
UPDATE: well i found out that once the shell opens as $, you type su. When you do that look at your phone and accept the superuser request, otherwise permission denied appears on the pc screen. now i have the # prompt!!!
UPDATE: Got Clockworkmod running now! and exploring a2sd... i give up. cannot find a concise thing that says here's the script that you use after doing the clockworkmod. what do i do???
Hi,I came from megatron rom and is using CM7 rom now.Not sure partitioning of sd card work on stock rom but you can try.
Disclaimer: I'm not responsible for anything that happens to your phone! Below is what I did.
Instructions: Download DarkTremor Apps2sd.zip file.
Then,Backup all your sd card contents on your PC.You MUST backup as partitioning of sd card will wipe the whole sd card.
Reboot in recovery and select partition sd card > Partition sd card again> Swap Size:Choose 0 (I'm not sure what the other numbers will do.) > Then 512mb for the next option. Then it will start partitioning. > After you're done, upgrade ext.2 to ext.3 > Then upgrade ext.3 to ext.4 > After that, connect usb or take out sd card and put DarkTremor apps2sd.zip file in the root of your sd card and then flash it!
DONE AND PROFIT!
Your internal storage should decrease very slowly because your apps are now 'tricked' into being installed on your sd card Hope this helps!
Sorted my problem out!!
Gonna post details asap! So excited

So you did my method or what?
Nope actually not. Found a simpler method that's easier for noobs.
So here goes in very short since I don't have links
1. Split memory card into two partitions. I used 1GB. I did the partitioning on Ubuntu as it was much easier to just resize the partition using gparted. I am not sure what file systems are supported for the apps but i used ext3 for the 1GB. Backup should not be necessary but you are welcome to be careful
2. Root phone with z4root, very straightforward process
3. Install Link2SD from Android Market.
4. Once its installed, it'll prob ask for root permissions. Grant them.
5. Open Link2SD and in the list, one by one for each app you'd like to move, select and it opens a page with some details. Just click on create link, and in the next page an option for moving cache also shows. Select that too. Then the app gets moved in the background and slowly your space starts increasing.
6. I did not move any preinstalled apps that came with the phone. Just moving the apps I installed gave me plenty of space not to worry with App 2 SD (froyo method) or anything. Also with this method, mounting for USB Mass Storage also gets quicker.
What's there not to line?
Always do a nandroid backup! I didn't as i didn't think much of an app.. my phone went into continued android logo loop. After several tries of battery pull,I managed to get into the phone but many of my apps went missing.. sighz...

Just curious, on a scale of 10 how hard is it to get cm7 onto your optimistic? And any clue whether existing settings are lost? Any other benefits? And features missing? It would be nice if we either got more battery life or better performance if not both

I use a stock ROM (2.2.1) and I have rooted and installed "Move2SD Enabler" from the market and moved all the apps to SD (except for widgets) in the plain simple old fashion. I currently have over 150 apps installed with about 90MBytes of internal memory free.

[Q] Newbie's problem with sd card partitioning

First of all I want to say hello
I've got some problems with partitioning sd card.
I'm owner of U20i, 8 GB ADATA class 10 card and I've got MiniCM7Pro v21 installed on my phone (through cwm v3.2.0.0-r5). Rom is working correctly.
I wanted to have more space for apps and more ram. I followed this tut:
tinyurl: l2kpno (I can't paste link because I'm new.)
Everything seems to be good but after reboot phone report card as not formatted. So I tried to partition card through cwm - this same effect. When I plug card into reader I can copy files etc. also I checked card surface - no read errors.
Am I doing something wrong Please help me.
Hi
I had the same problem with this rom, cant make it work.
But seems that titoms found a solution.
Check it here.
Hope this helps.
Thx for reply.
After deleting swap and resizing ext to free space phone recognize card and ext also works. But there is one problem: I wanted swap.
If it is problem only with this rom maybe I should try another one, original CM7 for example?
U r welcome.
Sure, there's a lot of roms for u to try. U should pick the one that fits ur needs.
I'm not an expert, but, why do u need swap?
I want to have more ram, for games.
EDIT:
Because installing original cm is quite complicated thing I decided to install GinTonic.SE by slade87.
So I did system, cache and data format; full wipe; cache wipe; dalvik cache wipe; battery stats wipe then I installed modules for gintonic and at the end gintonic.
After reboot phone freeze at Sony Ericsson text. Every time. Why? What should I do now?
EDIT2:
OK. I got back to stock se rom by flashing phone with seus. Then I rooted, installed cwm and made that 3 partitions on sdcard (fat32, ext2, linux-swap). After that I wiped all things (except sdcard and sd-ext), rebooted and installed gintonic. After reboot gintonic started but all time ADW is giving errors about force-closing and card is reported as blank. I installed modules but it didn't do anything. So this is not only with MiniCM7 (swap) problem.
Can I even have a swap partition? And why GinTonic is giving ADW errors (even without sdcard plugged into the phone)?
Ok.
I have GinTonic in my device. I also had that problem with partitions in this rom. After many attempts, I decided to create de partitions with Linux gparted (before i was using minitool partition magic). Then reflashed rom, and the problem was fixed. You should try that.
The only difference between me and u, is that I don't use a swap partition, just Fat32 and ext2. But for what I've read in the rom's thread many users have swap partition working with this rom.
For the adw problem, just install launcher pro and adw should start working. Why? I don't know XD. I installed go launcher and uninstalled the other 2 launchers.
Hope this helps.
Repartitioned through gparted and... "blank sd card".
I can't install launcher pro because adb is giving errors all time and I can't do anything.
I think I will **** this swap and go back to MiniCM.
Anyway thanks for answering.
U r welcome.
Roms unfortunately behave differently from one device to another.
If you want to save memory, I recommend using autokiller memory optimizer and autorun manager.

[Q] darktremor a2sd on Cyanogenmod

Hi guys,
This question is bouncing on my mind for some time...
Many people state that they use darktremor a2sd on Cyanogenmod, and I'm wondering why?
Darktremor's objective is to move apps to SD, right?
Well, Cyanogenmod also allows us to do the same, right again?
Sooooo, why use darktremor on Cyanogenmod?
Thanks in advance
I'm also wondering about the difference if I was to use darktremor's script. I noticed the default Apps2SD would not completely transfer the app to the sd card (for example, if I transferred a 20mb game, it's reported that around 1mb is still left in the internal memory), hence the amount of apps I could install on my ace is very limited. Would using darktremor's script solve this?
Apps2SD (the one in Froyo and CM) moves most or some (depending one the application) data under /sdcard/.android_secure and /sdcard/Android/.
It'll leave behind some files in the internal memory.
A2SD (and S2E and Link2SD) moves the ENTIRE application (app files, data files, dalvik-cache) to a separate partition on the SD Card, then links the apks to the filesystem (linking is Linux term for making a shortcut).
Another advantage of this is the bugs present in native apps2sd -- such as widgets not appearing after a reboot -- are not present in a2sd method. This is because of a mount script executed during the booting process.
This post was sent from hell.
scripts like dt a2sd tricks/fools the android to use sd-ext partition as an internal memory...
that's why when you use apps2sd(one that you can use from the app info menu) just moves a little part of the app to sd card while scripts like a2sd moves the whole data to the ext partition..
But I have to create a partition before I flash dt or link2sd? Or it is a virtual partition that the program creates? Is it really worth to use dt or link2sd?
Sent from my GT-S5830 using Tapatalk
Yes, you need to create a partition on your SD card (512MB is more than enough). The easiest way is to just partition through CWM Recovery (under Advanced, I think). It'll automatically create an ext3 partition of your choice size (also swap, if you want swapspace).
Don't be deterred by ext3 because it's lower than ext4; it's actually much more stable.
Is it worth it? Very, if you know what you're doing. As long as you don't mess around with the partition, say when you plug in USB mass storage mode to the computer, it should be fine.
My ace never appears on my cpu as a drive. Dunno what is the prob.
Anyway... how do I format my sd after it is partioned? To delete the partition ..

Darktremor's a2sd and CM kernel...
I've had some damage to my phone. More details over at my post in General questions.
My damaged unit. SK17i My consideration for replacement. MK16i. From Xperia Mini Pro to Xperia Pro. (For the price difference, it seems for the hardware upgrade to get the bigger unit.)
My basic setup? Custom Kernel with root and a2sd.
Problem. There seems no Custom Kernel but one... bbooff's. (Waiting to here if it also will support the a2sd of darktremor.)
I came across CM being available already for the MK16i.
Problem. I just use root & a2sd. Suites my simple needs. I don't do Custom Roms at present. My need is for a stable communication device.
When I got my SK17i. I read that there was a clash between CM and a2sd. Has this then been cleared up? (Fully? For those CM users who may know. I'm a noob to Android.)
Is it possible, from instructions I read on getting CM on the MK16i there's a CM kernel that must be installed 1st, to just use the CM kernel and Stock Rom?
I am just thinking maybe there will be some clash here? Then maybe not? I know the forum instructions did clearly say stock Kernel is incompatible with CM. That may be about some features CM wants to use. Stock Rom simply may not access any 'bonus' features of CM Rom but will there be a problem otherwise?
Anyone who knows more about Android... maybe have an idea?
My setup and use is pretty basic, pretty simple and no, I do not want those apps2sd programs that don't use an Ext partition and don't 'fool' the system into thinking it's running the programs on the system partition.
Well, looking for information. I would rather get the MK16i. Nice bit of kit, but I also firmly want the same basic little setup I've got here but there seems at the moment to be few Custom Kernel's for this device and I am not even about to try to roll my own. Wouldn't know where to begin.
