[Q] Modem panic when using 3G + outgoing call - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I received my Atrix 2 days ago, and I like it a lot, but I have one major issue. I live in Belgium (Mobistar), and imported the phone from the US (AT&T). It was sim-unlocked using a code I bought online. Incoming calls, data (3G, H+), wireless work fine, but when I try to make an outgoing call, the phone just reboots
This is with a fully stock (1.2.6), non-rooted Atrix, default set to use GSM/CDMA auto (PRL). I've found out that I can use the *#*#4636#*#* menu to force the data-connection to use EDGE (GSM only). When I do this, everything works fine, including outgoing calls, I just don't have 3G
I've checked with logcat what happens when I try an outgoing call + 3G, and I see these errors:
Code:
04-09 15:52:20.301 1374 1416 E RDS : RdsReadSvrMsg: READ HEADER FAIL 0

I've tried reflashing 1.2.6 from the leaked SBF (after doing a restore to factory settings), but this did not result in any different behaviour. I then tried to upgrade to 1.5.7 using the official Moto upgrade procedure, but again, same issue on the outgoing calls.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could debug/fix this? One test I intend to do is using a different operator's SIM, to determine if its related to Mobistar's UMTS implementation, or if its a generic problem with my phone. I was also suggested to do a "fastboot erase kpanic", but as I'm unsure what the kpanic partition is for, and whether or not it's safe to erase it, I have not tried it.
I can use the phone on EDGE for now, but I hope this issue can be solved, so I can enjoy my Atrix to the full extent!
Thanks in advance for any help,
unknown

Just tried using a different operator's sim (Mobile Vikings):
the phone does not reboot/crash on outgoing calls, and they work correctly. I did notice that it cuts the 3G connection during the call, and restores it after call completes. That shouldn't be necessary I think, but it's still far more desirable behavior than what I'm seeing with Mobistar!
My company pays for & decides the operator though, so this is not something I can easily switch..
unknown

tried playing a bit with the ril.modem.mode and the the ril.hsxpa settings, but did not find anything useful.
Also made a motorola support ticket, got the expected bs response:
"I do apologize but the Motorola ATRIX from AT&T is not completely compatible with the data connection of other Service Providers. The ATRIX is configured to work with AT&T's data network only. That is why it is not available for sale outside the United States. I'm so sorry for that inconvenience."
I guess I'm stuck on 2G until more people start to have this problem, or until a new radio firmware is released

FIXED!
Hooray! Fixed flashing the radio from the Telstra SBF, see this thread for more information:

Will give it a shot
UPDATE: This worked!!!!! UTMS and voice calls..NO MORE REBOOTS...HORAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Can I use another ISP other than my carriers GPRS network?

I have a Siemens SX56 using AT&T Wireless as a carrier.
The phone is running the following:
ROM Verison: 3.14.03 ENG
ROM Date: 09/27/02
Radio Version: 6.12
Protocol Version: 324e4
My question is:
I would like to connect to a traditional ISP. I have talked to AT&T and they said when I go to the internet, I have to connect using their GPRS network. They said that if I used another ISP I would not have to pay them to use the internet. DUH! this is what I want to do. Any advice would be appreciated...
Thanks!!!
Bob
You can connect to the Internet using GPRS. This, in essence, would make AT&T your Internet Provider. You can choose to get your mail at your existing provider (but you must use AT&T's server for outbound mail). Other than that, your 'normal' ISP has nothing to do with you once you connect through AT&T using GPRS.
You could, theoretically, also connect using the GSM as an ordinary modem, by dialing your old ISP, making what's called a 'GSM data call'. This would however limit throughput to roughly 9600 bps, and it would not have the nice 'always on' property of GPRS. It would be cheaper per bit (in most cases) for large downloads though. Go figure.
i want to make a gsm data call
I do want to make a GSM data call. at&t charges an arm and a leg for data access, that usimg my regular ISP even at 9600 baud would be great.
when I try to set up anything other than GPRS, it says "there is no answer". I called siemens and the said at&t disabled anything other than GPRS.
what I want to know is can I enable that ability which I know the phone can do?
Thanks
Bob
GSM data calls can be made from most phones, but AT&T may have disabled this call type for anyone but those paying for a 'data subscription'. With most providers a data subscription just means you get a seperate phone number in order to be able to receive incoming calls from analogue modems.
GSM providers are weird. For instance O2 in The Netherlands blocks fax calls for some unknown reason, but passes GSM data calls.
I must not be clear...
OK... I must not be clear, so I will try to be more clear in my question.
First a little background:
I have AT&T wireless with a data subscription. My current subscription is for 8 Megabytes per month. I would like to use the web, but with only an 8 Megabyte limit (which is AT&T's highest data level subscription that you can buy) I can not do much on the Internet.
I know that a GSM data call is slower. I know that it is not always on like GPRS. Because of the data limit of my current AT&T data subscription I want to make a data call from my phone to my ISP.
I have setup a ISP connection profile in the connections area on the phone. When I dial the ISP the phone responds with a message that says "the number you dialed is not answering" this is a text based message, not a voice message. I know the phone is answering because I can call it from my home pc or just dial it from the cell phone and it answers. I was told by siemens that AT&T turned the GSM Data portion of the phone off. I am hoping they turned it off with software and its a setting or something I can change in the registry to enable it again.
So in summary:
I do pay for a GPRS data subscription ($25.00 for 8 Megabytes / month)
I would really like to also use GSM data as an option for getting to the Internet when I do not want to use up my 8 Megabyte limit on GPRS.
I really have appreciated your comments and your help. I hope I am being more clear in my question now.
Thanks,
Bob
I'll try to be more clear as well then...
Try calling your provider and see whether they support GSM data calls from 'normal' subscriptions. And with normal subscription, I'm not talking about whether or not the subscription has GPRS, but I mean any subscription that doesn't get you a special phone number for incoming data calls.
There's plenty of providers that do not provide normal data calls, even to subscribers that pay extra to get GPRS. Most of this practice did end when WAP was believed to become big, but some may have limited data calls to their own WAP access numbers.
Should your provider still offer separate numbers for analogue and ISDN, try calling both types to see what happens, and do play around with both call types (analogue & ISDN) from your XDA. (Under 'Settings' / 'Connections' / 'CSD Line Type' in modern ROMs)
Good Luck...
Similar issues
I am trying to do the same thing with my 02 XDA, and i get the same message saying it is not answering. However, i can dial my ISP using a GSM connection, as i have done this using my nokia 7650 connected via IRDA to my PC, and useing it as a modem. However i cannot get the same connection to work using my XDA. Very strange, so if anyone can help.

[Q] Vibrant i9000m 3g Connectivity Issue. List of what I have tried so far...

I am having a problem connecting to my 3G (HSDPA) with my Vibrant. My phone company is using 850 and 1900 (Bell Mobility). I have been at this problem for days now and am running out of places to look so I thought I would write down a list of what I have tried and see if anyone out there can suggest other things to check/fix. The first problem is that I am not sure when I lost my 3g as I was using WiFi as default in my home while rooting with the SuperOneClick. After rooting I installed the voodoo lagfix with a little bit of trouble so that may be where the problem lies. However, since then this is what I have done....
-Factory reset and wipe cache (didn't fix problem)
-Check APN Settings
APN - pda.bell.ca
Proxy - web.wireless.bell.ca
Port - 80
MMSC - h t t p : / / m m s . b e l l . c a / m m s / w a p e n c (spaced only because I cant post links yet)
MMS Port - 80
MCC 302
MNC 602
APN Type - Internet + mms
All others set to none or blank
-Check Flight Mode (disabled)
-Check Data Network Mode (on long power button press) (Enabled)
-Thought to try other roms, installed Darky's Ressurection 9.2, still no 3G
-Installed seeArms v0.4 with JL2 modem as that was what mine was stock. No 3g
-Entered *#0011* in Dialer to access Service mode

WCDMA Switches between 850 Band 5 and 1900 Band 2??
-Under Settings --> About Phone i have the following
Network - Bell
Signal Strength - -85 dBm 15 asu
Mobile Network Type - HSDPA
Service State - In Service
Roaming - not roaming
Mobile Network State - DISCONNECTED
IMEI - 35328504~.....it matches my product box
IMEI SV - 06
I dont know what other pertainent information would be needed but if your willing to help and need other info I will gladly look it up. Thanks in advance!
are you sure that you have a 3G coverage in your are?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I am sure. I live in an urban area and have had no problems with nexus one before the vibrant.
I actually resolved the problem. I went into the bell mobility store and they put in a new sim card and refreshed my data package and everything was fine. No idea why this happened but it's all good now.
Thanks for your interest in helping!
Did you ever have 3g on your vibrant?? If you are not on the tmo network you will not get 3g only edge. Just like you can't use an unlocked iphone on tmo with 3g. Just like any phone really. Except you can use tmo vibrant on ATT with 3g. But can't use the ATT captivate on tmo 3g.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I did have 3g for the first day I had my Vibrant until I started modding it. Like I mentioned though, 3g has been restored after a new SIM card and a refresh to my data package from Bell Mobility.
I will say though, that the 3g service I am getting is by far superior to what I had on my Nexus one with any radio I tried using. I am working in a very remote location in northern Alberta now and still get 3g
Now if only we had a stable and complete version of CM7!

Anyone using an airvana or airave with mopho 4g?

Hi, just want to see if anyone is having issues with using either a 1st generation airave (samsung) or 2ng generation "airvana" with the photon 4g sprint.
1. issues so far (on stock OS with profile, PRL update : PRL Version : 51080
When connected to airvana (2nd generation) -
50% working : calls inbound, outbound - sms outbound/inbound
We tried power cycling photon, (battery in / out) leaving airvana coverage and re-entering, power cycling and reset-reprovisioning airvana (from network side). Also assigned my phone number to "whitelist" but still no success.
Still works 50% of time.
Next plan is to set and reassign old MAC and 1st generation airave.
................................. is what I am feeling now
In addition : tested with networks :
* Sprint Only
* Any CDMA
* Automatic
When disconnected from airavana - calls : inbound/outbound sms:inbound/outbound - work again...
What else can I have sprint airvana support do to pass the message on and troubleshoot?

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 pro (Kenzo) - No Service on both sims after drop

Hello all,
I have Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 pro and after a drop, I cannot get any cell signal to the phone, it states "No Service" on both sims.
Wifi and everything else is working without any problem. The phone can identify whether sim phone is inserted or not, it just seems that its impossible to enable radio. I tried to reboot phone, turn-on off airplane mode, reset to factory default but no change.
I opened the back lid and all connections are in place, no loose parts are visible. Removed the antenna part, re-seated it and still its not working.
Below you can see all details on the symptoms.
- Settings / About the phone / Status / SIM Status:
Netowrk: Unknown
Signal Strength :0
Cellular network type: Unknown
Service State: Radio off
Roaming :not roaming
Cellular Network state: Disconnected
- Settings / About the phone / Status /Status -> IMEI Information shows MEID, IMEI for both slots, but IMEI SV is 00 regardless the presence of sim card in the slots.
Settings / About the phone and pulse several times on internal memory I go to the Testing menu and then I can see:
- Phone information 1
- IMEI is populated ok
- Signal strength 0dBm, 99asu
- Location: LAC = unknown, CID=unknown
- DcRtInfo : mTime=9223372036854775807
mDCPowerState=2147483647
- Current network: off
- GSM service: Radio Off
- GPRS service: disconnected
- Network type: unknown
- There turn on radio, select the type of network do not work whatever I choose.
Do you know how I can repair this situation? Is there any other lower level tool that I can use to force enable the radio or to further debug the issue?
thank you

Hi, have you solved the issue? I have same issue, need solution!
Unfortunately not, I shipped the phone back to the store I bought it and they sent it to factory where they confirmed an issue with the motherboard that was caused by the drop. They asked for $125 to repair it - I dont think its worth it since you can find this new for as low as almost $150

Oh...
Yeah you're right. Many people are getting the same problem so i don't think everyone has dropped their phone and have motherboard problem. It's just Xiaomi wants to fix the phone by easy way and earn something.

Cellular network issue (StraightTalk, AT&T, Marshmallow, LePro3)

Background:
LeEco LePro3 (LEX727) bought a year ago and in service since that time.
Not rooted. (Nor do I wish to root, if that was even possible.)
Use Nova Launcher for better desktop experience
StraightTalk on AT&T network. Indoors, usually shows LTE with 2 bars.
"Fully patched". LeEco EUI version 5.8.021S. (No LeEco Android updates available since 1/2017 as they pulled out of the USA market.)
Android 6.0.1.
Android security patch level January 1, 2017.
Handset worked fine for many months.
There was no obvious change or trauma to the handset (no drops, skills, weather exposure, etc.)
Lately, there have been data issues when WiFi is disabled.
(Everything still works with a WiFi connection.)
Not all features work with the StraightTalk/AT&T data connection when WiFi is disabled.
StraightTalk/AT&T data function details:
SIM card status
Signal strength -110 dBm 27 asu
Cellular network type LTE
Service status Voice: In service / Data: In service
Cellular network state Connected
Phone works (can make & receive calls).
Simple text messaging works (can send & receive texts)
MMC messaging works (can send & receive MMC texts)
(Ookla) Speedtest App works with good speeds.
Google Chrome browsing does not work "ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE"
Firefox browsing does not work "Secure Connection Failed The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading."
Gmail does not download messages, sent messages are stuck in Outbox ("Queued")
Google Maps does not work "Can't connect to Maps".
Google Play does not work. When searching for Apps, "No internet connection. Make sure Wi-Fi or cellular data is turned on, then try again."
Troubleshooting steps taken:
Adjust AT&T APN settings used as per StraightTalk Tech Support.
Change out StraightTalk/AT&T SIM card with StraightTalk Tech Support assistance.
Factory/Hard Reset with reinstallation of all accounts & Apps.
Anyone know how to fix my web data issue? (Or know what further tests/observations to make?)
