[Q] What Kernel is the best? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, this is my problem: I have a Samsung t959 Vibrant Galaxy S with Boinix-V1.3.1 Voodoo, i changed the kernel, i was using Dragon 3.2 without OverClock but it has a lot of bugs (it reboots like 4 times in one day, it breaks for a few minutes and then when it came back it reboots, some times it reboots into the "safe mode" and i can't use all the apps in the phone, etc.). Then I changed to Drgaon 3.2 with OC, the same, but with one more bug, it breaks on screen off. I changed to Dragon 5.2 with OC!!! Beautiful !!! the colors, the sound, everything, but it has the bug of the screen off. I need my cellphone ON, all the day for any call, what kernel can give me all of the Dragon 5.2 without that screen off bug?
Thanks !!

It's down for personnel preference but you got two choices left, either Overstock or Tigersblood. They're both great but very rom Dependant and like I said down to personnel preference and use.
I had the best battery life and overall performance on Overstock though.

Try the non over clocked version of overstock first and see how you like it. If you do you can try out the other versions. I've been running the under volted version for a few weeks and its been great. There's also a overclocked version to play with to.
Trigger 2.9.2

it's personal preference try all them out. I like overstock kernel it works very well for me but my friend had problems do he uses tigers blood........ just depends on the phone when it was built, how you got it set up, like I said personal preference........

My opinion its the newest overstock. Thats been my preference.

Ok, i'm trying the Tiger Blood 3.22, it looks good, but when i use the voltage control it breaks, i have to see what voltages are the correct, i'm using the ones posted on the thread but them doesn't work. After this i'm going to try overstock ! i'll tell you how is it going

Minutes latter after try Tiger Bloods i decide to change the kernel to one Overstock, it is the 2.4.1 and it is the best i have tried today, if i find some bug like the screen off i'll tell you. If someone knows other kernel better than this, pleas recommend it to me

Yea. My experience on TB was it would just shut off. I even tried not changing the voltage but still happened. Have had no probs with overstock 2.2.1, 2.41 just came out & I've been using it since its release. No probs yet.

Kernel panic/Upload Mode message after installing Voodoo lagfix 3.0

OMG, I think I bricked my phone...
I have just intalled Voodoo-lagfix-3.0-SGH-T959-update.zip with Clockwork Recovery and after rebooting my phone is stuck at Kernel Panic/Upload Mode message. That happens after hearing some crazy robot voice talking something about ext4.
I was running a stable Bionic 1.3.1 before having this crazy idea.
I cant get my phone to recovery mode by pressin vol up, vol down a power buttons.
I have searched all the day for something in the xda forums and google but im not able to find any answer.
Is there any way to recover my phone? I dont care for any data.
Please help i'm desperate
Does it hurt to be that stupid? do a search for Odin and learn to use it. You'll have your phone back to normal in no time at all.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Thanks for the fast reply, vinnydakid
I have already used Odin to install Darky Rom in a Galaxy I9000 and Modafoca in a Galaxy I5000.
I have all the roms, ipt, adb file im my PC for Galaxy 959 (Vibrant) but I am little confused. I am a nobbie and I all know is to follow tutorials.
Can you give me a hand?

Thank you jneal9 !
It is working like a charm now! I though I had bricked my phone for a while but the problem was how to start the phone in download mode.
Sdobron, I downloaded the last lagfix available in voodoo website for Vibrant but didnt realize this was too old.
Thanks everybody. I am going to read more before flashing something.
BTW, wich custom rom do you guys recommend? I am looging for speed and battery saving...
The best roms out now are trigger and bionix for 2.2. I'd recommend trying those with bali kernel (the UV version, if your phone can handle it).
Also, make sure you're converted back to ext4 partitions from voodoo.

No problem. Thanks really go to s15274n for the fantastic guide though.
As for good roms. I like to try them all but seem to keep coming back to Bi-Winning V2 combined with the Bali kernel. It has given me the best battery life of any rom I've used and it's just as fast as any other. Good luck.

I got Trigger 3.2 final with [email protected] #3 kernel according to my phone settings. I will look for this bali kernel and if my phone can handle it.

OM, think I am lost again.. So many files and I dont know what to pick:
Current:
Bali v1.8.5 uncapped
Bali v1.8.5 capped
Bali v1.8.5UV uncapped
Archives:
Bali v1.8.4 [FPS uncapped]
Bali v1.8.4 [FPS capped]
Bali v1.8.3 [FPS uncapped]
Bali v1.8.3 [FPS capped]
Bali v1.8.2
Will try learning on the search button...
Maybe start out with the 1.8.5 uncapped or UV. The uncapped one removes the FPS cap, but some phones get flickery screens when uncapped. If you don't, you're set. If you get flickery screen, switch to the capped or the UV. The UV one has lower CPU voltages and although the battery on the capped and uncapped are still great, it should give a bit better battery life.

I ve finished installing Biwinning v2 and Bali 1.8.5 uncapped because of your comments
Everything went fine and there is no flicks in the screen at the moment.
The only thing I dislike about this rom is that keyboard feedback was a lot faster before in Triger rom, almost instantaneous. Any mod for that?

Did some tweaks in swype settings: No auto spacing, no box suggesting words, fast speed and no precision.
It`s not as fast as Triger default keyboard but 60-70% better.
Hope anyone knows something else.

[Q] Bali 1.8.8 UV vs. Non UV

Hey guys,
I was going to actually post this under the Bali thread in Vibrant Developments but as I'm a noob on this and haven't posted anything, it wouldn't let me.
So explaining my situation, I installed Bali 1.8.8 UV on my samsung mythic two nights ago. It seems to have a lot of good reviews but due to the timespan used, I have not seen any improvements as of yet over the stock kernel that came with Bionix V 1.3.1. Anyways, from time to time, I find the phone freezes up (creating an event on the calendar, texting, scrolling contacts...) just during basic use as I don't play any games or plan on it.
I understand the concept behind the UV as I have looked it up and it makes perfect sense. So getting to my question, is it expected to freeze from time to time? Or if it does, I should just go to the non UV version?
Thank you for your time guys!
Bali has been smooth sailing for me since I started using it around the 1.8.6 phase. My guess is your problem is unrelated to the kernel. Flash any new modems or roms lately?
You haven't seen a difference in battery life? Did you calibrate after flashing it?
With the instability, I'd just start over from stock, flash Bionix, flash Bali, and see if that doesn't help. If you still get the instability, it probably wouldn't hurt to try the non-UV.
To be fair, Bionix 1.3.1 w/ Bali UV was rock solid for me when I used it. Something might have happened in the flash. It happens.
some phones cant run UV as well as others can they ?? just like overclocking, some phones cant go as high as others
so might be just that your phone doesnt like UV

No I didn't. Actually afterward, I reflashed Bionix V, fully recharged the battery and calibrated it, and had over 3 days of battery life and on the second recharge, the battery life dropped...
Anyways, yes I did calibrate after flashing the kernel as well as the ROM.
Ok, I have a question with regards to your suggestion of going back to stock. I do have a nandroid backup of that, but is that the procedure I would have to follow? I have only read about odin and have never attempted it if thats what I would have to do, but also I am afraid of losing my data (as titanium backup and mybackup root wouldn't work under stock correct?) or it does not have to be unrooted?
If you could please just give me an overview of what I would have to do to go through your suggestion, it would be appreciated, thanks!

most economical rom?

Hey guys I love all these custom ROM's but honestly the battery gets drained so fast it takes the fun out of it. I was wondering if there was any specific ROMs that were easier on the battery>?? The only feature I truly use on these things is the wifi tether, other than that I don't care if the phone is a litte slower etc, i just want to be able to make it a day on 1 battery..TIA
I can easily make it a full day with the PowerWashed 2.0b3. Yet I also have Juice Defender Ultimate installed.
Ill be quite honest, gingerbread is not what its cracked up to be imo... I have found that powerwashed 1.2 ed05 froyo w/ pbj 0808 kernal is one of the most stable roms out there. Im getting between 1.5-2% percent battery drain per hr. That means I go 2 days without charging the phone with normal use. Heavy use such as browsing the internet for a couple hrs and sending dozens of texts usually equates to charging the battery once a day or slightly better. The only issue is not all fascinates play nice with the -100 undervolt that the pbj kernal has built in. If thats the case, then just run the otb fusion kernal that come with pw 1.2...battery life is still good(2.5% per hr) and you can overclock with that kernal, but truthfully overclocking does not really improve much imo.
Wow thanks guys! Yea I am on MIUI and its horrible.. I will look into the ROMs you guys suggested..thanks!
vanilla gb is insane. running with the glitch 9/15 kernel, undervolted, smartass, noop and usas tweak applied, simply the fastest rom i've ever used battery is also holding up really well, but I have the naztech 2400 installed just yesterday, so battery should only get better with more charges. pwgb is also really good, but the file system is still samsung rfs, which is really slow. Pw froyo is probably the better choice for most people with pbjt kernel which has voodoo. Ill stick with vgb and see how battery does and if it doest yield me 6hrs of screen on time ill switch back to pw froyo and see how it does.

Ok sweet! Yea, everything seems to be good, only issue I am having is in BLN it says the Biblight isnt working or something like that..Voodoo control is g2g, just the BLN. I'll have to look into it
I had the same problem with bln not working on this kernel. What worked for me was to flash the older 0531 kernel first, then flash the 0808 kernel. Bln works fine after that.

Actually pwgb beta 3 with adrenaline shot mod is yielding some crazy results for me. Screenshots to follow when battery decides its held on long enough.
Only my 2nd day on ED05 powerwashed w/ pbj0808, but man I must be doing something wrong. At BEST my battery is draining roughly 5% an hour and thats with practically little to no use. NO clue how you guys are getting such good battery life...

What kind of programs do you have open/on, on a daily basis? I found that twitter absolutely destroyed my battery. I actually turned notifications off unless its a DM or @ me, otherwise I just open Plume and refresh to read the timelines.
Its doing A LOT better since then. I haven't used the phone much, but its only at 75% and Its 140pm, been off the charger since 6am
I am gonna see how it is this weekend when I am actually using it more
@Droidstyle: I was thinkin of trying out for starters the rom you recommended "powerwash 1.2 ed05 froyo w/ pbj 0808 kernal" but when i did a search for powerwash 1.2 the thread mentioned that it was outdated and to try gingerbread...just a little confused since i'm still new at this: considering my samsungs fascinate uses this base band (this is the general info of my phone Model : SCH-I500
Firmware Version 2.2.2
Baseband Version: S:I500.04 V.ED05
Kernel: Version 2.6.32.9 )
i will have to use a rom that supports ED05? or am i okay to try out any of these roms? did a lot of reasearch today, just trying to narrow it down as to which rom will be the most apt for me (meaning which one will i get the best use out of) and what will i be able to do after that? do i apply themes from the themes section, or i can only do that if they correspond to that specific rom? to anyone in the room please enlighten me, i've spent almost all of today researching this and would greatly appreciate help from the experienced...

Im not sure why he did that... Its a very functional rom and is up to date as much as it needs to be. Read my guide, uses that rom for an example on how to install a froyo rom. You are not limited to what your base band shows, you can flash 2.3.4 gingerbread roms if u like,, but they still have a few minor bugs. Actually 2.2.2 pw 1.2 ed05 is the most functional rom up to date imo... everything lse still has minor bugs to work out.
@DroidStyle thanks man, your guide to flashing power wash is pretty direct, but i'm a little lost here...Isn't the Rom mgr. program you install for the market used for flashin the Roms so that you don't have to odin the rom to the fascinate? also, can I apply whatever themes? ...ie: are those used to customize ur GUI?

Stay away from rom manager!!!! It only works for the mtd based roms such as cm7, miui, aosp... even then odin is a much more reliable way to work with the fascinate. imo just get use to the fact that your going to have to use odin most of the time when flashing.

How to diagnose cause of extreme UI lag?

What I'm running:
Latest NEAK kernel + AOKP build 36.
Issue also occurred in Phonebricker + NEAK (sammy version).
My issue:
Occasionally the OS will get extremely slow, like you would expect if the phone were running at 100mhz or something. Everything continues to work, just reeaaallly slow. For instance, music playback gets very electronic-y as sounds are stretched out, tapping one of the capacitive buttons takes 5-10 seconds before vibration/feedback, and another 5-10 seconds before a menu pops up. I managed to get the NEAK configurator open and scrolled to the CPU tab, and it claimed I was at 1200mhz - though the phone didn't even get warm so I'm skeptical.
I'm guessing since I've done a full wipe between phone bricker + NEAK and AOKP + NEAK, the only thing in common are my apps and the NEAK kernel, so it stands to reason it would be one or the other causing this. My wife's GS2 is running AOKP + NEAK as well though and we haven't experienced this problem on it yet (but it's intermittent so it might be there, just hasn't happened yet). I'm currently running conservative governor + SIO, but it has also happened on conservative + NOOP.
While I could just change a bunch of sh!t and hope it goes away, I'm more interested in figuring out what's causing it, and fixing it properly. How can I figure out what's going on? What will log this kind of thing? What do you guys recommend?
Thanks!
this is really easy/simple. flash a different kernel. all devices are not created equally so you need to just try everything that we have and see which best fits your device.
if you had this issue on 2 different roms with the same kernel then you've answered this question in your post for yourself. it wasnt even necessary to post this dude. change kernels. done.
some phone like neak kernel, some phones dont. some phones like siyah, some phones dont. you cant "fix" that unless you get a different phone and try neak again. but even then it my not "fix" this issue because nothing is broken.
Well, what if it's something as simple as the governor I'm using or an undervolt setting? I'll probably flash back to your kernel though, but again it'd be nice if I could figure out exactly what the phone is doing when it's "super-lagging".

If you're undervolting when this issue is happening, change it back to regular voltage.
I can attest to the slow downs and the screen lock ups. I have been using Tasks kernel for the past week and a half. Going back to try NEAK one last time. If it gives the same results I'll have to give up on it. I don't under volt hardly at all by the way. Like maybe -25 per step so it isn't that, and when I first experienced the issue I tried Evey possible io scheduler / governor combo under the sun. All yielded same darn results.

Stock & Siyah. My issue with it wasn't major; it just isn't as polished as GB. The difference is noticeable.

When mine gets laggy, I usually pull out the battery and put it back after 10 min or so. If you are leaving the phone on more than 2-3 days at a time, that could really hurt the memory and phone performance. The phone usually runs on 300 mb but it will run about 700mb ram after 3 days (even force closing everything).
It is not mentioned so I just wanted to cover all bases
After posting about giving NEAK another try, I did. And within 10 minutes got an extreme lag slow down while typing. Didn't touch any settings kernel side. So I flashed siyah kernel and so far no problems. Sux too. I liked NEAK.

I have been running Siyah with Task's AOKP and have had zero lag and great battery. No UV or OC.

Posted this in NEAK thread but also posting it here:
I just installed the new AOKP, used kernel clean script and installed NEAK 2.0.5x, then went into the NEAK Pro config and changed my governor to Conservative and sched to SIO. Rebooted, opened Scramble with Friends and immediately got superlag.
Turning off the screen and waiting 20-30 seconds fixes it (long enough for the phone to go to sleep), but nothing else short of a reboot will help. I can leave it like that for an hour (if I don't let it sleep) and it'll still be uberslow.

Slow Vibrant

Please go easy on me, here. I know how to search forums, I just don't always understand what I read on here. My husband has always helped me with most of my Vibrant issues, but he has recently defected to his HTC One S.
My Vibrant is getting unbearably slow. I'd been running a Fishman rom on it, and it seemed very, very slow. We then decided on the Slim Ryder rom. The first day or so it was unbelievably fast. That, unfortunately didn't last.
I have only the minimum apps on there and only one updating widget (BeWeather time and weather. Used to use Beautiful Widgets but it began superimposing the time over itself so I couldn't read the time...).
I'm a realist, and I know that my Vibrant is old. I know it isn't as fast as The Hubs' new HTC. I'm only comparing it to itself. Here's where I've noticed the slow downs:
*when switching portrait/landscape (sometimes tries to show half a landscape screen in portrait mode)
*when touching a text field, it is very slow to bring up the keyboard...sometimes i have to tap multiple times
*when Swyping or using Swiftkey, it sometimes hangs on a letter
*it takes several seconds to bring up my text messages, dialer, call logs...basic phone functions.
*using the browser is unbearable.
I've done the old standard...Master Reset, cleared history, caches, cookies, etc. I have wiped call logs and clear out my texts every other day. I don't store music on my phone (Google Music) and have my photos upload to my Google+ account via wifi so I don't get a lot of that stored up. I do not use a live wallpaper.
I'm not eligible for an upgrade until November. I am absolutely open to trying other ROMs, but as a mama with little people and no landline, having the ability to reach 911 from my phone is non-negotiable. Can anyone offer me any ideas on how to limp through until my upgrade?
Thanks in advance.
My vibrant was pretty slow with 2.1~2.2 using almost any rom;gingerbread was a huge improvement and ice cream sandwich is just blazing fast. I would suggest flashing ICS passion http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362961 or another rom that supports 911. Right now, the developers are working on porting jelly bean to our phone, and when its stable, go grab it!
2.1 and 2.2 roms I heard are a lil slow so try to use an ics rom like passion chimera or zenwick

Try a kernel with voodoo lag-fix as iTz KeeFy mentioned and in the meantime disable any animations.

My Vibrant is getting unbearably slow. I'd been running a Fishman rom on it, and it seemed very, very slow. We then decided on the Slim Ryder rom. The first day or so it was unbelievably fast. That, unfortunately didn't last.
<snip>

Fellas, if she is using Slim_Ryder, then she is using a kernel that already has Voodoo included, IIRC.
To me, these symptoms sound like you may be getting bogged down on your low-end CPU frequencies. Maybe get something like SetCPU or CPUmaster from the market and up your lowest frequency to the next step. When I am on a 2.2 ROM, I use BaliX1.2 and I have mine overclocked to 1.2ghz but my lowest frequency is 400ghz and not the standard 100-200 that most use. I find that this bogs my system down a bit more than it should. So that is when I decided to test it out and up the lowest in step increments.
You can go to my Battery Guide and in the 3rd post, there is a link to get SetCPU for XDA users for Free. When you use this, you might also want to check the governors as well. Some 2.2 kernels do not play well with On-Demand (BaliX most definitley does not-proven a long time ago). I have mine set to conservative and no profiles set at all. My I/O is Deadline also.

Thank you very much. It was the Blue Frankenstein 2.2 ROM I switched from to go with Slim_Ryder. Both have been very laggy.
I will definitely try the steps you've outlined for me, Woodrube. I really appreciate it. I know I'm using a Bali Kernel. It says Bali v1.8.8UV.
I spoke with a second-level tech at Tmo this morning and he said I've done all the troubleshooting steps they could recommend. He said at this point it is a hardware issue.
I will try these steps today and research how I can test my 911 capabilities legally. If if can get over those obstacles, I will definitely try an ICS Rom. I just have to limp through until early November.
Thanks again for the help, guys!
