How to avoid ridiculous roaming fees - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all! I am curious if anyone has some suggestions on how one could say take an american at&t phone to scotland and not get rapped by roaming fees?
I' ve read something about a secondary prepaid SIM as a solution but my greatest concern is data if I am away from a wifi source.
Thanks in advance!

Unlock your phone, and use a prepaid local simcard.

Sounds easy enough. Thank you

If you call AT&T and bug them, telling them you are going overseas, they will give you the unlock code. BTW...............I haven't been home to Scotland for about 13 years, so please drink a couple of Tennents or McEwens for me!

Help AT&T Atrix on Tmobile

I just bought the prepaid 4G prepaid plan using my atrix and I'm only getting 2G speed. I read that it has to do with the frequency. I can't afford to buy a new phone, so I'm hoping to be able to change the phone frequency or hear any other solution that someone has already tried to get 4G speed. Thanks!

Hey, sorry I dont have a solution to your question but a question myself lol. I'm looking to switch to t-mobile pre-paid or month to month also. What all did you have to do to make the switch? Pretty simple?
someone already asked about using their atrix on the T-Mobile network.
search for it. I'm sure you'll find the answer with about 15 or less of search time.
----
and I found it already. took me like 5-7 minutes. and it's only because I read a few different threads as well.
so yeah. search. quite easily found.
Frequency=radio=hardware
Get to soldering and hacking drivers if you want to change the freq.

Its impossible to change the frequency of a device. There's a reason these things have to go through the FCC before they hit the market. Enjoy your EDGE. I recommend checking out Opera Mini, if you can live with some weird looking pages it'll speed up your web browsing quite a bit.
Not possible by software. Sorry.

[Q] Can I hack this phone and use it with other networks in my conutry?

Hi guys, im wondering is it posible for me to use this phone with other network carriers in my country. And also what do i need to do if i can? Thanks
Unlocking the phone will allow you to use any carrier that you want. An unlock code is required, Google unlocking cell phone there is tons of information to read about unlocked phone's.
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA
You'll be able to use the voice but not the data. Because the phone is specifically designed for AT&T, it has radios for specific AT&T bandwidths. Basically, you'll be able to make calls and get 2g data but you'll never be able to get 3g or HSPA+ on any other carrier's network.

Samsung Galaxy SII ETF??
hey people i own a samsung galaxy s ii for about 2 months now and i wanted to unlock the phone
i wanted to ask you guys do i need to pay the ETF fee to the AT&T
i will also be leaving usa and then i would living in india
please help me and tell me whether i need to do something
i also wanted to buy a new iphone and take it to india for my brother
are there any legal issues of etf problems for the phone
I have the same AT&T galaxy S2 and I live outside the US. When you unlock your phone you can use it outside the US with any carrier, now the tricky part is if your phone is GSM then you may use a SIM card if its not then you need to go directly to the company and set up the phone with a number. Some companies out side the US rely only on SIM card for internet use, this does not mean your phone will not work as a phone. Figure out first if your phone is GSM, if not find out where your moving if they offer internet use for phones that don't accept SIM cards.
You can take any phone where every you want, it's YOUR PHONE. Now if the phone has a bad ESN (stolen, debt or w/e reason) then no, it's not a good idea.
My phone is a GSM
i just wanted to know whether is have to pay a Early Termination Fee to the people at AT&T
will unlocking be an issue
thank you for any help

I live in Venezuela and i get full 3g/h+ signal and download rates. Yes this phone comes with at&t frequencies, but they aren't exclusives to that carrier. Most carriers in the world use the exact same frequencies.

Not necessarily correct. 3G and H+ is possible worldwide.
The AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777 fully supports:
quad-band for 2G (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and
tri-band for 3G (850/1900/2100 MHz).
It is only missing the 900 MHz band for 3G. But much of the world uses 2100 MHz for 3G anyways, so after you unlock this phone, you'll be all set to receive 3G or H+.

There is always a ETF if you plan to cancel your wireless plan during contract. To Permanently Unlock your phone, I found the best way is to call AT&T and request an unlock code. If you don't want to deal with AT&T, you can always go to ebay and buy an unlock code.

vibrant on virgin mobile?

so i hard bricked my vibrant and im sending it to mobile tech videos next friday and i wanted to know if its unlocked if it would work on virgin mobiles network because i currently have them. either way im un bricking it but they offer unlock services so i was gonna pay the 10$ extra to do it cause i love the phone. if not ill use it as a play phone for games
Edited: I gave the wrong advice. I was thinking Straight Talk. You were asking about VM. I believe below poster is correct, and since VM in the USA uses a CDMA network, then it would effectively be impossible to use your Vibrant with their service.
Virgin mobile in the US is a cdma network so you cant use a vibrant with it unfortunately.

Your options for service other than T-Mobile are at&t, straight talk(uses tmo and at&t but its cheaper) simple wireless and depending on where you live there might be other providers . Make sure its GSM and it will work but that doesn't guarantee 3g service. That depends on which frequency bands the service provided uses for 3g services. I have a captivate (at&t sgs1) unlocked and use my second tmo line, I don't get 3g on it because they don't share the same 3g frequency bands.

[Q] Possible to use Note i717 without data plan?

At&t has me buying a mandatory data plan(3gb) when I use about 300mb a month and that is because I purposely shut off wifi so I dont feel like a jackass for paying for something I do not use...
I have no need at all for data,I am always near a wifi spot,is there a way to make it seem like my smartphone is a dumbphone?
I have a bunch of att branded flip-phones laying around,is there a way to take the imei from of these and put it on the Note i717?
I'm sure if it is possible,it is complicated.Just wondering.
Thanks.
Buy a sim card for a dumbphone and put it in your smartphone

I tried to do something similar.
I called At&t and told them that I wanted to use a flip phone and gave them the IMEI and everything,I used it for a few days and after I put it in an Atrix 2 I have. After 3 days I got a text saying they added a data plan for $20 to my account lol.
They can read the IMEI of the phone,if you call customer service, they can even tell you what sim is in what phone at that very moment.

I don't think that will work. I had that argument with at&t about not needing the data add-on for my sister-in-law's phone. She wanted the large screen for SMS and doesn't know the internet exists. I put an old 64k sim in the phone, and within the day the phone was cut off. After a call to at&t, they told me I need a data plan with the phone. They detect the type of phone.
Don't bring up the topic of phone cloning - its illegal and banned on xda, as it should be.
So it is "phone cloning"?
didnt know, thanks for the heads up.
I can understand making data mandatory on a subsidized phone but on one bought off contract,it is unfair.

Believe me, brother, I'm in 100% agreement with you, but it's at&t's tune we dance to.
I think i am just going to sell this Note i717 and get a Nexus 7 for my tablet needs and pick up a tmobile branded galaxy s or something else cheap.
Pick up a Roger's I717R Note if you want to stay with this phone. ATT can't recognize the phone and won't put you on a data plan.

That doesn't make sense. Sprint phones are CDMA not GSM. Sprint network doesn't use a sim card to register. In other words, no sprint phone on at&t network.

I've been using AT&T prepaid plan for a few years now, the GNote is my third phone with prepaid plan ($50/mo: unlimited calling, text, data{only for non-smart phones}) but I'm cool with that. So I don't see why you can't do the same.

To add to this comment. At&t will also know if you are using any smartphone from any network or assume its a smart phone I guess. My wife uses a galaxy s 4g exclusive to t-mobile for about 4 months now. Last week she was hit with the 3 gig addition as well. They dont even know what type of phone it is. All she did was turn on the data to download an sms and bam a day later she got the the email.

Traveling to Greece

Hey guys,
I'm traveling to Greece for our honeymoon and want to be able to use my cell phone without paying Verizon's crazy international rates. I'm running Scott's CleanRom on Verizon. Can I simply buy a Vodafone prepaid Sim, pop it in, click add APN, add all the appropriate info for the access point, and then all good to go? I read imnuts post regarding this but am a little confused. Hopefully someone can help! Thanks in advance.

That is correct. I recently did this with a Telus prepaid SIM, and worked just fine. Granted, I was using Beans18, but your method should still be correct.

I'm using my-q which apparently is now owned by wind. I'm not sure if they do. But with my particular prepaid service you can add Internet bundles online so technically you could just use the money you put on your sim to replenish your data instead of adding more minutes.
