Possible fix 4 Mic design flaw? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yeah where the hell do I complain? HTC.com? This is so unacceptable. Why did I buy hp's w/ a Mic if no one can hear me?n don't get me started on the phone not supporting sufficiently loud vol. Levels 4 high resistance( higher end headphones-above 16 ohms generally) or the placement of the charging input or the phone not recognizing all media tags for media files it does play... orrr the back button flaw in the stock media player...n of coarse the abysmal battery life... I returned my iPhone4 for this? So far as far as a media player the iPhone is superior - tho I still wouldn't trade it - please HTC ...fix this mess!!
[I still love this this phone- but extremely frustrated]
Sent from my Rooted-HTC Thunderbolt using XDA App

Ok, there are like 50 threads with this same complaint. USE THE SEARCH BUTTON! Stop making useless threads that have this crap covered already! Stop. Hit "Search," if you need help locating that, it is at the top of the page next to where it says "Device by OS or Manufacturer." Ok, now type in that box "microphone" or hell, even "mic issue" and read the results. Read again. Reread. Then stop and think if a new thread is needed.
Oh, also, feel free to go back to iOS. No one is holding a gun to your head. And as a side note, this phone isn't even a month old yet. There will be a fix at some point. Unfortunately, some people, like me, don't hold it that high up on the list of issues.

thnks i feel sufficiently stupid n inferior but i will try to be more resourceful i appreciate ur patience n tolerance w/ my "newbie" ignorance

well i asked about the fix cuz i didn't know if it was the type off design faw that could be fixed remotely but i just took those suggestions and was helped immensley, tho it took some time cuz my PC's so slow now-now i just need help locating all my redundent posts in one place so i'll wait 4 ur reply...but seriousely, to all the tolerant people; sorry but ill get the hang of it soon.
...now if i could just locate those redundent post of mine.

Contacts Picture Quality

Right then, who else has noticed this? I'm presuming its an issue with the sync?
My contacts are stored with Googlemail and are set to sync, which is good as it saves me manually doing it and I usually change business contacts details so its nice that it updates on its own.
I link the contacts to facebook, pictures come over, look perfect (well, alright).
Later on, the pictures look awful and I'm presuming its because they are sent to Google and then sent back to the phone in a lower quality.
There were similar issues with the Touch HD syncing with Outlook and nobody found a way around it, anyone got any suggestions?
Nobody else noticing that their contacts pictures are really poor quality? Is it just me having this issue?

Me too...
No you are not alone.
Not alone
You are not alone, I presume that there is some kind of loss in the sync to make it work faster, I havnt seen any setting to make it lossless.
When I saved a picture from facebook and added it manually the was no loss in quality.
So until there is some kind of app out I guess you will just have to manually add the pictures if you cant live with the quality.
I sync with Outlook and its the same.
I do remember when i had a HTC Touch Diamond that was the same. The way you cured the problem was to take a photo with your phone to use as a contact picture and then it was full quality. To be honest not tried it with the Hero yet maybe a task for today for me..
Same problem here.
Hope they solve it in a future update.
Its the same with me, on my Diamond I created small high quality pics for my contacts & even with these the quality is crap.
On a side note is anybody else thinking that XDA Developers isn't the place for us & our hero handsets? I'm feeling a little bit unloved

People are only just getting their Hero's so this will get going soon. Its the same when any new devices come out, just takes time.
We have root already, TP2 doesn't have HardSPL yet and thats been out months.

haha, ok...
Root gives you access to all of your phone and should allow you to flash new roms onto your phone.
HardSPL is used on phones and if you have hardspl, again, you can flash new roms.
TP2 is the Touch Pro 2, just another phone.
Basically I was trying to say the phone is new out, and usually when they are it takes a while for people to come over to them, but they do eventually. When more and more people come on board, there will be a lot more support.

You know what I think I need to make a retaction & clarify how I feel about the XDA Developers site & the hero. Both the comments of nicelad_uk & liamhere are totally spot on & it was silly of me to expect the amount of expert knowledge on the hero that I enjoyed with my previous winmo devices.
I realise now that this could be my time to shine & put something back into this community instead of just taking like I was accustomed to before. Now obviously its been established that my knowledge is a bit lax on the software but where I can help I will & hopefully the increase traffic & hel will bring more people to this part of the forum.

Haha, trust me, if you asked my girlfriend, she would say the opposite!
I started putting back into the community with my Touch Pro 2, recreating a theme which I loved on my Diamond but wasn't available, it was a good feeling.
Now I'm making apps for Android, nothing big, just getting used to it and trying different things.
And no problem with the help, we all try to help and its good to see a mod using these devices too, other people will follow shortly, when they see the light
Contacts Image quality
I have the same bad images quality in contact also. Even when i had my Touch HD. I sync with Outlook and even set the contact photo from the phone but when a call comes in or is made to the contact its all blurry. Any ideas?

That warms my cockles, does that! I feel just the same so I'm trying to help where I can (Not totally altruistic, just its summer break and I have time on my hands)
On the point of poor quality pics in the call window, I think what is happening is that the fone is grabbing the little Thumbnail created for the contacts, not the original pic. The thumbnail then looks like Sh** in the big call window.
Not a solution but could be a reason.

This issue is usually to do with the Sync, its been a common problem with Syncing with Outlook and google from Windows Mobile Devices. I posted a comment about poor picture quality on Google's forums and one of their development team said they would look into it, that was nearly 3 months ago though.
Can't think of anyway round it! Very annoying though. Auto Sync off for me I think.
I think everyone should go to the google forums and reply to this thread...

Anyone found a fix for this problem???

[Q][REQ] Local Social Networking? NetSend for android?

Now we all know that social networking has become a big thing in the past few years. Even more so now that there are apps all over the place that all do the same exact thing. Which is connect you with other people around the world, but what if you want to talk with someone a bit closer?
Everywhere you look there are people on their cell phones, whether it be android based or not. However what if your little people shy and want to strike up a conversation with someone? Especially if their tied up on their phone it makes it tough to bring up a random conversation. What if there was a way to kind of interrupt them and impress them at the same time?
For instance what if your friends dragged you to a bar, bars aren't your thing and you'd rather be at home playing games on your computer or just tearing apart the latest gizmo that you got. Well you happen to notice a girl on the other side of the bar that seems rather nerdy herself that got dragged by her friends and would rather pay more attention to her phone than the drunk guys trying to hit on her.. Obviously going over and saying hi isn't really an option as she'd likely just ignore you like she's done to the rest of the guys, cause your just another drunken idiot that wants to get in her pants (at least thats whats she'd think)..
Wouldn't it be a bit more interesting to say send a message to her phone even tho you don't know her, don't know her number, and know nothing about her.. However it'd get her attention if she got a popup that said "Hi, I can't help but notice your bored.. Me too."
Now this may or may not be possible, as I don't know a damn thing about the android nor hacking it. However I remember back in the day of high school me and a few friends during certain times of the day would go to the same computers in school, and since we knew the IP's of those computers we could send messages back and forth between each other cause they either A didn't disable windows messaging, or we had to turn it on.. We'd screw around with others in the library by sending a mass net send to all computers saying "Your computer has been infected!" then shutting them all down remotely..
Would there be a way to do such a proposal? If so anyone up to the challenge? Cause really how amazing would it be to just open up a new way to talk to those around you.
iOS had something I saw that almost kinda does this (at least I think) called sonar.me yet I don't know if android does..
Anyone?
I was thinking that if there was a way to utilize the push notifications.. Tho the question would be how to detect said device.. If they were on the same wifi as you that'd be easier.. Even through bluetooth, tho does bluetooth still transmit even when your not allowing it to be seen?
What about the possibility of just through the phone airways.. I mean they could be sitting there online with their phone anyway to intercept that..
Anyone at all?
Hey man, already thing this is a great idea. Although your scenario doesn't quite mesh with me as I am just as "geeky" in the world of pick-up as what I am in Android nerdi-ology haha (what I mean is I would have no issues going over there and sparking up conversation if shes geeky or not...although geeky would make it easier - bar easy!). Anyway I think that is a great idea. It would be ok if it was an app. Not just you sending a notification to their phone.
I was using message in a bottle for a while. Random and cool. But did not narrow to close proximity nor anything like your proposing.
I think there maybe privacy issues for push notifications being intrusive, but if someone elected for use via an app then they agree to accept notifications I think this would be ok.
I have wanted to have this sort of thing when I was on the train travelling home. I have even caught the eye of some random hottie down the isle and wanted to see if I could somehow contact her. I have scanned bluetooth and even tried to push a picture to someone thinking it could be her *thinks to self "hmm she kinda looks like a Jessica and she has a Nokia N95...bugger it send image to Jessica's N95" caching haha. So yeah I get what you mean .....walking up to someone on a train the environment (although sometimes is expected there is a level of acceptable human behavior there in) is not the place to be attempting to pick-up in dead silence with ears in close proximity eves dropping like all hell in comparison to say a night club/bar/outside area where people are sparse and/or conversation is not easily over heard. *NB: I have attempted (and passing the fear if she is confident and there has been an acceptable level of "eye-sex" or "eye-flirting" with smiles before hand) I won't get flagged off easy. If she is not confident....your pick-up interjection and sudden realisation of overh-hearing ears (eves droppers) can land even the best pick-up artist in a pickle and the shut-down is an even bigger tumble to say the least.
It's ok to get shut down in a bar where people can't hear very well, try getting shut down on a deadly silent train haha being snappy fast whitty and able to promptly deliver a negate to her clear cutting shut down is another subject all together. Being able to do it in a funny way may win you more laughs than her shut down too (geeeze I am going waaaaay off track from Android Nerd to Pick-nerd aren't I? wow I diversed big time! haha ) Aside from that I have been successful in picking up chicks on the train without this technology....but this sort of technology would only leverage a man's capability even more so.
Damn it! If this is made....I need to get a job out of town and get back on the god damned train again. I entered the world of Android to wear my geek hat so I wouldn't become obsessed pick-up dude again and here you are a forum member causing two worlds to collide! Thanks....NOT!
PM for more discussion or clarification of my ramblings haha
Well see thats the thing, sometimes girls just don't to be bothered, so how would you get their attention even for a small chat? If the girl was tech suave it could lead to an interesting topic of discussion on "How did you do that?". They have tons of chat apps that allow you to talk to complete strangers, but these people often are all over the world..
I like the things like the Nintendo DS, or even a Cybiko (if you even know what that is.. =D ) were it has a wireless chat feature where the room is just there and anyone in the area with the same device can just join in. The problem with the Nintendo DS is how often are you in a bar with one? Even the Cybiko (which is super old and was like a young tech kid's playtoy from like 2000) is that no one had it so its not like you could go out to a public area and have people join in on those chat channels.
I've seen apps that claim to do this, but they really don't, as its still over the internet instead of your local area..
Hell the closest thing that would almost be like this scenario would be hosting a open wireless connection that anyone could connect to, hosting an irc server on that network and having people connect to that server, which is quite a hastle for any one person to do just for an interesting way to chat..
Tho I agree with the whole privacy issue thing, I knew that'd probably be the case.. What if there was an app that your an that whenever someone came within your vicinity it would pop up saying "So and So has entered your area" and allowed you to click on their name and start saying hi..
Like I said in my first post there was sonar.me for ios, that kinda synced all the social networking sites to see who was in the same place you are. Supposedly it also allowed you to chat with the people that were also in your area. That would be kinda interesting..

massive phone in to motorola...

So after much thought about the issues we face from poor customer support at both verizon and moto and thinking of other instances in which the individual customer's voices fall on deaf ears... It comes to my thought, 'why don't we the customers, not just dx2, but all moto customers on xda that are tired, fed up and sick of all the ignorance up there rise up!' Not that we could actually go to the offices of moto and verizon. (though if people have the time, location, and desire go for it) But similar to bus boycotts of years past, or sit-ins at restaurants. What if we were to pass the word around, and then on a specific date, say the 16th of May, we all do whatever we can to talk to moto and verizon, ie: call customer service any moment we have, chat online when we're not to busy, email anyone we know there as often as we can. Just to talk about unlocking the bootloaders. Maybe after a day of taking all our complaints and seeing the numbers we actually represent, not to mention how this will bog down their infrastructure... Maybe they will hear us... After all there's nothing illegal about it and it has been proven an effective means to an end.
I Like It . I Like It Alot.

Lemme list a set of issues I have told reps so far:
1. Music stutters like a ***** (Rephrase! Don't say ***** to the rep, especially if it is a lady! )
2. Battery bug
3. Many times the screen does NOT turn on after hanging up from a call. It isn't the case that the phone is turned off, I still here notifications for texts and emails. The screen doesn't wish to turn on. (I noticed this on CM7, so may be a CM7 issue, but still worth mentioning).
4. Screen automatically clicks icons even if I don't do anything. (Happened few times on CM7, but I think I observed this on stock as well.)
5. Lags like a ***** sometimes (rephrase!!!) So much so that it feels like a 300-600 MHz single core Windows Mobile 6 phone! !
6. Crappy/buggy video recording. Overall poor camera quality in low light! It is just pathetic, I say.
7. So far, on stock blur, I didn't find a trouble free, foolproof way to do voice recording. The voice recording ****s up when quitting the recorder app OR turning off the screen OR both. Even on CM7 I many apps fail. However, one app namely PCMRecorder works. But still it is too buggy to call as working well.
8. Many times, compass points in random/wrong directions when navigating using Maps (either transit, walking, biking or driving directions).
AND MANY MOOOOORREE...
Thanks litetaker,
I do think we ought to keep it to pre-leak stock problems. The screen blackout for example is a 2nd init only bug. Can we keep references to rooting & roms out?

Battery yes GAWD battery! How did I forget about that horrendous thing! Evernote does a wonderful job of keeping your voice recordings organized in the voice note section. The service has been invaluable to me as I have lots of ideas to keep track of and typing on a rocky bus is not easy
I've heard about the post call screen issues from more than a few people now, that should definitely be highlighted. It would scare me into not wanting take very many calls and I'd imagine the older, less-text messaging crowd would'nt lik it either.
A thought: I know many have contacted Moto or Verizon customer support and have been passed up the rep hierarchy time and again. To those who have, were you given any kind of extension to dial or the number of a particular department that could better answer your question? If we could all skip over general support somehow and concentrate on a more "effective" department, a critical mass of complaints could be reached and we would be passed further up the ladder; to a person(s) would could actually provide good, solid information.
Btw called Motorola support and heres how it went:
Me: expressing my concerns not really driving into the woman hard (please dont take that the wrong way lol)
Rep: Could you hold please?
Me: Sure :waits for 45 minutes: Hangs up phone
Didnt have time for that!!
May 16th and organizing
So I choose may 16th cause that's in about a month or so which should be plenty of time to notify all motorola users not just people on our phone but all the phones motorola claimed they'd unlock... Kinda like everyone uniting on a brute force of their customer service. As far as organization, it don't think it needs to be that elaborate. We tell everyone we can that owns a moto to call, im, email, or whatever to moto and verizon on that day as often as they can... If we can only get 5,000 people to participate and each of us makes 3 calls on that day for 3min. each that'd be 750 hrs of phone calls... That's got to raise some attention, not to mention cause a more then a few problems...

Yea that sounds like a great plan
I wasn't thinking there should be some big elaborate scheme to the whole thing
But some kind of organization to show Motorola that the customers WILL and CAN unite and become a force to be reckoned with.
Maybe include a start time at which point most people should really start their calls/emails.
Say maybe 7-9am(we will have to pick a timezone to base that on so everyone adjusts accordingly, my thoughts are to have it start between 7-9am where they are located.) That way pretty early in their work day all of a sudden within 15-30 minutes of the first few calls , their phone lines and emails suddenly explode into a furious action under "attack" causing them to wonder what the hell is going on, will frustrate them slightly and hopefully cause them to make a decision better suited to our wants/needs ...then continues all day long to rack up the total man hours spent on it. But I feel like an initiao BOOM of calls/emails to grab their attention would hopefully get them to realize the users have become completely fed up with the non existent customer relations
So when is it?

^^^ I say we listen to this guy! He seems to have some knowledge when it comes to pissing people off!

I'm in a world of pain. Please help.

Trying to keep this brief and simple, circumstances have caused me to be spending the next month living at home with my mother and stepfather, neither of which I get on with. At all. Infact they've decided that as a sanction for me being an adult and refusing to blindly contribute a frankly extortionate amount of money to their bills for staying here for one month, they've decided to hit me where it hurts and take away the internet by unplugging the router alltogether. ****ing idiots.
I'm a techie. I'm a resourceful one too, I'm making use of a BT-Wifi hotspot that's being broadcast from a nearby neighbor (It's free to BT Internet customers!) by using my S2 as a tether, and my girlfriend is abroad at the moment so talking to her (especially over this ****ing month of horribleness) is exceptionally prioritised within my life. All's well and I'm able to use the internet (hence here I am typing this to you) however this signal is rather weak and is tending to drop out a lot.
I'm thinking if I place as much bare metal around my phone as I can it'll somehow help amplify or at least stabilise the signal (my rationale being when i was a kid, using an indoor tv aerial i used to get clearer picture by rigging up metal coathangers and ensuring they're in contact with the metal on the aerial)
Will this work? Any ideas on how I can keep this signal would be GREATLY appreciated!
The internet is an actual requirement for me, not an optional extra
Can anyone hear that sound... ?

World's tiniest violin?
Dude I don't need that. My brother just got stabbed. I need internet.
Thread Closed, let me include a few points also.
1. Dont post questions in development
2. This is a SGS2 forum, not a hardware mod forum
3. Please stop swearing, putting this *** in the middle of a word is still swearing.
Thanks

Recording Video

Dummy question.
I just recorded some video on my DNA.
Nice video! No audio!
Does that mean that I had accidentally turned down the volume rocker before recording and therefore no sound was recorded.
Or is the audio really there but I don't know how to access it?
I know.....but hey!
There are no dumb questions, right?
Dan:crying:
There is something I have been curious about relative to this site.
When a simple question is asked by a non expert like myself: the chance that it will be answered is slim at best.
1. The question is so basic and asinine that 99% of the members here dismiss it as to not want to be associated with it.
2. Those who read one of these basic queries really don't know the answer and don't want to offer a suggestion so as not to be thought "foolish" to the forum.
3. I am leaning toward number one.
To update:
The volume on my DNA is not muted and was instead ticked to full on.
The setting in the video recoring software is set to "record at stereo". It was not set to off.
I reshot another video today and for some very simple basic reason when I play the video back there is no audio.
If someone knows (and is not afraid to publicly admit) what I am doing wrong.....I would be very grateful.
It is true that the answer to this will be very embarrassing to me ....but so what.
Anyone care to help a total newbie?
Dan
I have't seen this issue before, so probably others are the same.
Usually if I don't know the answer to an issue, I don't reply. Which I think most do.
Otherwise the thread would be nothing more than a bunch of "I don't know" replies.
I would suggest to try an audio recording app to see if your mic works there. If it does, then it has something to do with your camera/rom.
If it doesn't work, then it could be your rom or a hardware issue.

I very much appreciate your quick response.
However, it did take a rather sarcastic and unfriendly reply from myself before someone (you) stepped up and offered some much needed advice.
I will say (as above) that this site for any new smartphone users who accidentally stumble upon it: this is basically a developer web site and is not meant to be inviting to those of us who are not at a very senior level of smartphone design and software development.
I was trying to sneak in here under the cloak of darkness ( the Devs might even smile on that turn of a phrase).
However that never works.
That is like knowing a little French and then going to a French restaurant and pretending that you really speak French.
In two minutes they will make you look like the fool you are. And you will be out in the street.
There are other web sites for inexperienced users of smartphone technology to search out where their newness will be more welcomed.
xdadevelopers (a wonderful place for the experts)........is not one of them for the uninitiated.

It isn't about people not wanting to help, or that your question was too basic for the "experts" to respond. You asked your question on a weekday night and expected it to be answered before the end of business day the next day.
You only had 85 views of this thread (as told by tapatalk) I bet dollars to donuts that 90% of those views were from people like me. And the remaining 10% is possibly from search engines from their daily bot to log for searches.
I just got off work, but check unread threads while at work when I have a quick minute. I can't go through all that troubleshooting while at work.
Now to the subject of OP:
What ROM are you running? Is it stock? Is it stock rooted or a custom ROM? All these are steps to find out why this happened. It could have been a bad flash, it could be a rogue app hogging the mic driver and camcorder couldn't access it. There is quite a few things it could be and you gave us nothing to work with.

Well. You won't be getting my two cents as I didn't see this thread until now due to being busy at the studio.
Go **** yourself.
The DNA's mic sucks for recording audio. In the past when i've recorded videos the audio is almost not even there it's so quiet. It's a shame that this phone (some, not all) have mad mics.
Faulty hardware. Replace device.
Also, being a **** after not getting your question answered fast enough isn't going to get your question answered usually.
